FDK News for February 16-19, 2016

What a busy week in Kindergarten!  We had a Parade around the school on Monday for Lunar New Year led by two grade six students that wore our dragon costume!  On Tuesday, Mrs. Turner made delicious pancakes with maple syrup for the whole group.  On Wednesday, we participated in a beautiful Ash Wednesday Liturgy.  On Thursday we prepared for Valentine’s Day and decorated the Learning Commons for the dance.  On Friday, we celebrated with a fun dance with a light show and gave out our Valentine’s card!  We also won the trophy for the “I Care” campaign at our school!  Our FDK students are continually getting caught caring for one another by using kind words and doing random acts of kindness!  Way to go FDK!
This will be a short 4 day week.  We will have a Starr Gymnastics session on Tuesday.  Your child’s first report card will be sent home on Thursday.  The Junior Kindergarten students receive comments this term.  The Senior Kindergarten students will have a mark with their comment in the different subject areas.  We will indicate with the report card if an interview is requested at this time.  Please feel free to contact us if you would like to schedule a phone interview or an interview at the school.  We would be happy to meet with you at your convenience.
We hope you enjoyed the Family Day long weekend despite the cold temperatures!

Ms Myers’ Class:

The grade ones enjoyed a busy week – despite the cancellation of our trip to the Mill of Kintail! We enjoyed making pancakes to celebrate “Pancake Tuesday.”  The children applied their measurement skills as they each made their individual pancake in “production line” fashion and had a good introduction on how to read a recipe. We will continue to focus on how we read and write instructions as we build our knowledge of procedural writing in the coming weeks.Tuesday marks our 100 day of school! We will celebrate with a variety of math and language activities connected to 100. Your child is welcome to bring in a collection of 100 small items (e.g. paper clips, rubber bands etc.) that we can use to practice counting by 1’s, 5’s and 10’s.  In religion we will be talking about how we can follow in the footsteps of Jesus as we journey through the season of Lent.  Our school Lenten project will be in support of The Shepherds of Good Hope. During the six weeks of Lent we will be collecting donations of canned fruits and vegetables.  As it is a short week, there will not be any new word wall words going home. Look for 5 new words the week of Feb. 22nd! Report cards will be going home this Thursday, February 18. Thank you, in advance, for taking the time to review your child’s report. Interviews will be scheduled on a needs basis. Have a great week!

Ms. Moga’s Grade 2 Class:

Happy Valentine’s Day! I hope everyone enjoyed their Family Day. Last week was full of learning and fun in Grade 2. We participated with the whole school in the Ash Wednesday liturgy; the students sang beautifully and received their ashes. We also made Lenten promises. We began handing out “Caught You Caring” tickets- this will continue for the next few weeks. Students are reminded to continue their simple kind and caring acts in the classroom and on the school yard. We of course ended the week exchanging Valentines!

In Religion, we will continue to discuss Lent and learn the story of Jesus’ experience in the wilderness.

In Math, we will be wrapping up 3D Geometry. Students should know the names of the figures, what a face, edge, and vertex are, ass well as how many of these each figure has (e.g. a cube has 6 faces, 8 vertices, and 12 edges). Our next unit will be measurement, specifically measuring time to the quarter hour on digital and analog clocks.

In Language, the students are off to a fantastic start on their explanatory writing. They each chose a “why” or “how” question about an animal and used nonfiction texts to help them find facts to answer (explain) their answers. We will continue this next week, moving onto our drafts, editing, and good copy (including an illustration and diagram).

In Science, we are nearing the end of our unit on Simple Machines. The students will be creating their own mechanism (something that has 2 or more simple machines). Ideally these will be made out of recycled material (e.g. paper towel rolls, boxes). A note will go home if they need to bring anything in to help with this.

Have a great week!

Pictures are of 3D Skeletons and of “Lent Pyramids” (each triangle had a picture of the parts of Lent- prayer, fasting, almsgiving).

Mrs.Rupnik’s Class

I hope you enjoyed family time this long weekend. Last week was very busy as we continued to focus on procedural writing.  We took the time to introduce Read & Write, a special application for Google Chrome that helps students with writing and reading tasks.  Please ask them about this program.  The Grade Two and Three students wrote a small procedural text about making ice-cream sandwiches and/or how to brush your teeth using Read & Write. This week we will work on another procedural task (how to wash your hands), using Read & Write.  In reading, we will focus on comprehension and begin to work on identifying the important part of stories we read.  Please check out the pictures below. With Mrs. Colaiacovo, Mrs. Manzoli, and Ms. Myers, the students enjoyed learning about the lives of early settlers using artifacts. The kit from the Nepean Museum was filled with special clothing, slate boards, toys, and much more! Lastly, a big thank-you to you, all the parents, for checking and signing your child’s agenda and the All About My Day book daily.

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful long weekend with family and friends.

The grade 4/5 class have begun our Lenten journey.  Each student has made a commitment to recognize this Lenten season by trying to be more like Jesus in their relationship with God, themselves and others.  We pray this journey helps them prepare for the wonderful celebration of Easter.

In Language, we began our sequencing reading strategy with a beautiful book, Water Dance.  While reading they are encouraged to recognize the order of events and to ask themselves, “What comes next?”, to help them understand the text more clearly.

The students should be practicing their Storytelling.  They have all chosen a book to share with the class in an entertaining way. Sequencing will be very important as they practice retelling the story. We will enjoy listening to the stories on February 25th.

In math, we continue to look at strategies when multiplying.  The students shared several strategies during a group inquiry that they will have the opportunity to put into practice this week. Keep practicing those math facts!

Look for your child’s report card to come home on Thursday.  As we begin the second term the students are reminded to continue their hard work.  They must take responsibility for completing any assigned work to the best of their ability.  Only their best will do!!

Thank you for your continued support!

February 28, 2015

Dear Parent,

My name is Chris Nihmey, an author and presenter who spoke to your child several months ago about the important connection between reading and

writing. On February 29th, I am returning to St. Anthony to speak to students about the extremelyimportant topic of mental health: what it is, how it affects us, how we can heal from it, and what stepsare needed, as a society, to fight against the stigma behind mental illness. I am an author of four books. If you are curious to see my publications, please check out my websiteat chrisnihmey.com

After two long years, the wait is over. Just in time for the holiday season, my latest book is finally here! Sally is my first fully-illustrated picture book for youth to adult, adorned

with beautiful imagery, and appropriate for any age. It is the heartwarming story of a teenage boy who befriends a homeless woman who is suffering from illness and isolation. It is a story proving that we can all make a difference, just by opening our hearts. Sally has many important themes such as respect, acceptance, and compassion for all. No matter the age of your child, I highly encourage you to read it first to elicit discussion as they read.

The day of my visit, I will be hosting an official book signing with students in the Learning Commons. I would love for your child to be a part of it. My book sells for a flat rate of $20. I will be

donating 25% of my total book sales profits back to your school for mental health initiatives. If your child is not purchasing a book, they will still be a part of our book signing. Autographs are free

of charge, as are smiles and laughter. Sally is a story about giving, even when you feel you have nothing to give. In 2005, fighting three mental disorders, I wrote this special story to emphasize the urgency for each of us to provide hope to those who have none.

Sincerely,

Chris Nihmey (chrisnihmey.com)

I give permission for my child to purchase the picture book, Sally, and will be reading it first.
