St. Anthony Connects – The week of December 12 – 16

Special note to parents

Please do not park in the bus loading zone on Booth – this is causing lots of trouble for our vans who drop off and pick students up at the end of the day.  We will be putting up pylons on Monday to block the area.  If this does not work we will have to ticket cars in this area.

Thank-you for your cooperation

Kindergarten News for December 12-16, 2016

k1

There will be many opportunities to join the Kindergarten Groups this week at St Anthony School to take part in some fun adventures such as a field trip, an Advent liturgy, a neighbourhood walk to the mailbox to mail our Santa letters and Reading Buddies!

k2

What a great week!  There is much excitement as we wait in joyful hope during the Advent season.  We are singing songs, participating in class discussions and sharing our great ideas as we begin to understand The Christmas Story.  Our students are very engaged during our weekly Advent liturgies.  They sing “Stay Awake, Be Ready!”  and “Light the Advent Candle”.  They know it is a special time when we listen to the gospel and the prayers.  Please join us this week on Thursday December 15th, 2016 at 9:15 for our Third Week of Advent Liturgy in the gym.

k3
The Kinders attended our second Advent liturgy with the whole school on Thursday. This time some of the kinders got to participate by standing beside their older brother or sister as they read a prayer. Another student got to light the Advent candles.

k4

Monday we will visit Starr Gymnastics for the last time.  Our students absolutely loved this experience and we were so lucky to go three times!  A special thank you to all of our parent volunteers!  The bus will leave at 8:40-8:45 am.  Please hop on the bus with us if you can! We will return by 10:20 am.

Tuesday we will get our jingle bells and musical instruments out as we march through the neighbourhood singing Christmas songs along the way.  We will stop at the mailbox on Rochester Street to put our letters in the mail to Santa.  We can’t wait to hear back from Santa this year!  Please join us if you can on Tuesday at 10:00am for our Santa letter walk!

k5

Wednesday K1 has Reading Buddies with the Grade 4/5 class at 10:30 am.  We are reading lots of Christmas stories.  K2 visits the Learning Commons on Wednesday morning too!

On Friday we will say goodbye to Ms. Jasmine (ECE from Algonquin) and Ms. Henry (student teacher from Ottawa U). Our Kindergarten students were blessed to have such wonderful educators in training and as staff we were so fortunate to have these educators be a part of our Kindergarten Team.  We wish them continued success in their educational journey.  Ms Henry will be back in February 2017!

Thank you Ms. Jasmine and Ms. Henry!

Ms Myers’ grade one-two class

This week the children completed some amazing artwork in the style of Piet Mondrian, one of the founders of modern art. They used primary colours and simple lines to create versions of Mondrian’s “Composition in Red, Blue, and Yellow.” Come by our “gallery” in the hallway and take a look!

Week three of Advent is already upon us.  We have been focusing on a different part of the Christmas story each week.  The children continue to enjoy adding a piece to our Advent calendar each day and are experiencing the joy of giving each time they deliver a card to someone in our school community.  In the coming week we will read the story of the Legend of the Poinsettia. It is a Mexican folktale that emphasizes the importance of giving from the heart. Remember to ask your child about it!  In math we will continue to focus on collecting data. The children will have opportunities to generate questions for their classmates and practice using a tally mark system to organize the data they collect.  In reading we are working on a decoding strategy called “Guess the Covered Word.” It encourages students to cross check initial letter sounds with what makes sense when they get “stuck” on a word. Ask your child to tell you about our “Guess the Covered Word” activity. This week our class will be leading the Morning Announcements. If your child has been asked to say a prayer, please have them practice reading it aloud to you in preparation. Mrs. Mullins, our home reading volunteer, will return to the class this Wednesday. Please ensure your child returns their Home Reading book this week. It sounds like very cold weather is headed our way this week…please ensure your child comes to school warmly dressed and prepared for the brisk air!

Writing- The students are almost finished their descriptive reports on animals! Once, finished, the students will have a chance to present their reports to our class to share their learning.

moga

Reading- We began discussing visualizing last week! Many of the students realized they already use this strategy when reading. We will continue to read texts and practice describing the visualizations in our heads.

Math- We began our unit on addition and subtraction. This week we will investigate various strategies for adding (e.g. use doubles facts to find larger sums, bridge to 10 to solve addition problems).

Science- The grade 2s started the new unit on Movement. We brainstormed ways that many objects can move. We discovered that objects and people need a force (push or pull) in order to move. Next week, we will continue to discuss movement, as well as position.

Have a great week!

Mrs. Rupnik’s Primary Language Class

We have been talking about how preparing for Christmas is much more than buying and receiving gifts. It’s thinking about how we can be more like Christ and then doing something about it.  To help prepare for this festive season, the children have worked on various Advent activities from participating in Advent liturgies, learning songs like Away in the Manger and donating toiletries for St. Luke’s Table.

rupnik-1

This week, we will write letters and cards to special friends of St. Anthony Catholic School (for example: Father Felix, our van drivers, etc.). We will also complete a sequencing activity about the Nativity story. Then we will retell the story using our own words.

We have completed the descriptive writing assignment called “The Best Part of Me”. Have a look at some samples. They are so creative!

rupnik-2

Please return the Retelling Journal to school on Monday, December 12, 2016.

grade-3

December is flying by! The grade 3 students had another busy week working and preparing for the birth of our Saviour. Elfie has been very mischievous, hiding all over our classroom, but she helps us to remember to be kind to each other especially during the season of Advent. I am also very proud of the work that the grade 3’s have done in their French class with Mr. Girard. Their play was unbelievable and I know they worked really hard on it.
Coming up this week:
Math – This week we will be looking at the different types of graphs and how we can use them to demonstrate information.
Language – We will be exploring how there are “pebble” words and “rock” words and how we can use them to describe Christmas events!
Religion – This week marks the third week of Advent so we will continue on our exploration of the Advent season.
Reminders for the week:
1. Popcorn day on Thursday
2. Third Advent Liturgy on Thursday at 9 am

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

The third week of Advent is upon us with all its joy and anticipation.  The students have been summarizing an article on the significance of this important time of the year and all the symbols that go with this liturgical season where we wait to celebrate the birth of Jesus.  Ask your child all the interesting information we have discovered through our readings.

t1

The students will visit Starr Gymnastics once again on Monday morning.  They are to be reminded to dress comfortably to be able to participate in all the fun physical activities they will be engaged in.

In Language, the students are enjoying our Book Study “Hana’s Suitcase”.  Ask your child about the events that unfolded in Hana’s life during World War II.  The students will also be writing an explanatory story about how people celebrate Christmas in another country.  It will be interesting to learn about how the customs differ from how people celebrate this holiday in Canada.

In math, we will begin our next strand, Data Management.  Students will learn various ways to collect and organize data.  They will make pictographs and bar graphs.  The goals for your child are to learn to gather and organize information appropriately; to read and interpret tables, charts, and graphs correctly; and to understand and be able to explain how people use data.

Our next science unit is Rocks and Minerals.  The students will learn about the different types of rocks and minerals and how they are important to our Earth.

The homework duotang will be sent home on  Monday and must be returned on Friday completed with care and attention to detail.

The students continue to bring in items in support of St. Luke’s table. Thank you!!!  The Grade 4/5 team certainly is an example of “Good News”!

Have a great week!

Whoa! We are keeping a frantic pace, but enjoying every minute of learning and fun in grade 5/6!

col

The students presented their December book talks this week and I enjoyed their creativity and their insights. I am building a reading list for my Christmas holidays, based on their recommendations! We were lucky to have Mr. Moleski (a Board technology expert) visit the class on Wednesday morning to work with the students on a mini research project for  Advent on their ChromeBooks.

We began the data management strand in math and students have been revisiting the concepts of mean, median, mode and range; constructing bar graphs and pictographs; and collecting and interpreting data. Next week we will continue to examine and graph data as it relates directly to us here at Saint Anthony.

The grade 6 students have been working hard on the Earth and Space strand of science. Ask your child to tell you their mnemonic device they are using to remember the order of the planets in our galaxy! The students will have a mid-unit quiz on Tuesday to check in on what they have learned thus far.

We have also been working on the special grade 6 rendition of a popular Christmas song and invite parents to attend our big premiere at the monthly school assembly on Wednesday, December 21.

We enjoyed the second Advent celebration as we gathered as a school community this past Thursday and I hope that parents will join us next Thursday, December 15 at 9:15 a.m for our next liturgy.

On Monday during second block we will be attending our second and final Starr Gymnastics session with the grade 4/5 class. On Wednesday morning, we will be walking to St. Luke’s Table to assist in preparations for their Christmas meal. Please continue to support this community organization by sending in personal care items. Help us fill our Advent train!

Please continue to check in with your child to ensure that he/she is staying up to date with work assignments.

Green Club News November and December 2016

The Green Club continues to do work around the school to promote a green way of life. We are working on energy conservation and minimizing waste. Students continue to lead monthly assemblies for   Wastefree Wednesdays. We also welcomed Roberta LeBlanc, an Ontario Dairy Educator, to St. Anthony Catholic School. All the students learned how we get our milk and milk products from the ‘farm to the table’. They even made and tasted their own butter. Late November, our post-Halloween Pumpkin bird feeders attracted some birds for us. Thanks Ms. Myers for capturing these birds on your camera! We also had our first Waste Audit for the school year. Students worked with Green Club staff members to gather garbage, recycling, and compost materials for a 24 period. We then weighed the clear plastic garbage bags and filled in the worksheets for our Ontario EcoSchools application. Finally the students assessed the data and communicated results to the whole school community during an assembly. They even created a Google Slide presentation with reminders and reduction strategies. Keep on going!

Hatch prepares students (ages 7- 17) for the 21st century by teaching how to write computer code using JavaScript in a fun and engaging way. Hatch has built a proprietary educational platform that is designed around the principles of self-paced and mastery-based learning to encourage children to challenge themselves and build their own digital portfolio from their library of 600  projects including Minecraft, Star Wars, Games, Art, Design Apps and much more!

Hatch after school and lunch time programs are 8 to 12 weeks in length, and your preference of start dates & times are available for the winter of 2017. After school programs cost $21 per hour per student, and lunchtime programs are pro-rated at $16 for a 45-minute session.

In order for students to obtain as much hands-on coaching as possible, we strive to provide 1 instructor for each 6 students. As such, we can run a program for as few as 6 students, although most schools have over 15 students participate. Our programs are HST exempt due to a positive ruling from the government who believes in the educational value of Hatch programs.

Registration for January classes starts soon – we will be running a lunch-time program.  Subsidies are available

Kindergarten News for November 7-11

k1

We had an interesting fun-filled week in Kindergarten!  Starting our week with Halloween set the tone for many great things to happen!  The students enjoyed wearing their costumes and parading through the entire school, stopping in each classroom.  We listened to some fun Halloween songs, we ate oranges and raisins as a healthy orange and black snack!  The students decorated an orange slice and used raisins to make a face!
We have been busy writing our names and practicing some sight words in SK.  We are retelling our stories of “Polar Bear, Polar Bear What Do You Hear” and “Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See” using story props of the animals.  We made self-portraits, had a visit from Ms. Lucy from the Rosary Program, played with slime, and had many gym visits.  Check out the photos for the highlights of the week!!
This week we will prepare our students for the Remembrance Day Ceremony on Friday in the gym.  We will listen to stories about peace, we will make a wreath to share at the ceremony and use photos of peacekeepers to understand why this is such an important day in the lives of all Canadians.  We will have poppies available for each child to wear on Friday.

Before & After school Program

We had a very busy month in October.  The children actively participated in all of the indoor and outdoor activities.  It was great to see the children engaged and having fun with nature.  Hopefully, we can enjoy it as long as possible.

We made a beautiful ‘Thankful Tree’ on the wall outside room 27.  We realized we have so much to be thankful for.   We should appreciate what we have all the time, and not only during Thanksgiving.

The “Wonderful Ones” and “Terrific Twos” enjoyed their Halloween fun last Monday. We took the opportunity to create a class book based on one of our favourite Halloween stories. The children also put their estimating skills to the test trying to figure out how many candy corn treats were in our estimating jar! In the coming week our language work will include practicing strategies that good readers use when they encounter words they don’t know. In math, we will work on sorting and patterning. This Friday morning, November 11th, we will observe Remembrance Day as a school community. In the afternoon we look forward to seeing a matinee performance of “Slumberland,” sponsored by the NAC. Permission forms for this trip will go home on Monday. Please return the form as promptly as possible. Thank you to all those families who have returned their child’s report card envelope along with the signed portion of the progress report.  Our interviews will take place on Thursday, November 10th. I will send home a note confirming our meeting time on Tuesday.  If you are unable to keep your scheduled time, please don’t hesitate to contact me to make other arrangements. Looking forward to another busy week with the “Wonderful Ones” and “Terrific Twos!”

Reminders: Thursday evening- Parent/Teacher Interviews

Friday– Remembrance Day & Slumberland Performance

Writing-  This week, we’re discussing the features of a poster, which is part of the media literacy curriculum. Students will create their own Remembrance Day posters to be displayed around the school for Veterans Week leading up to Remembrance Day on Friday.

Reading- We continue to make connections to our class read-alouds. This week we will focus on text-to-world connections. This is when something we read reminds of us of something going on in the world. I have chosen some books that touch on environmental issues as I think this is a topic that most of the students are aware of and will be able to connect to.
Math- We are continuing our patterning unit. This week we will focus on extending growing patterns as well as using a pattern table or chart to help organize information to make growing patterns.
Science- This week we will discuss metamorphosis.
Religion- We will begin learning about the seven sacraments.
Art- We will make poppies to decorate the gym for our Remembrance Day assembly.

This upcoming week, we will focus on a new ‘thinkmark’ called connections. Students will read and make connections to better understand stories. An example of a text-to-self connection might be, “This story reminds me of a friend that I play with on the weekend. She is kind and nice to me.”  Parent-teacher interviews will take place on Thursday, November 10th. The interview is very important in that it allows us to review your child’s progress and talk about next steps. Please continue to support your child at home with the November homework calendar. When you support your children’s homework routine, you help them do better at school.

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

The Grade 4/5 Team continues to work together to reach new heights!

November is off to a wonderful start and the wonderful weather has given everyone an extra jump in their step!
In Math we continue working with larger numbers to solve real life inquiries using addition and subtraction calculations.  We have also been using money amounts in our calculations.  Have your child practice these concepts by calculating the cost of items you buy when shopping or the change you will receive after you pay. The students will be tested on these concepts on Monday.  Students should also continue to practice their multiplication facts which will help in all strands of the math curriculum.

In Language Arts, the students had our first visit of the year from Mr. Moleski.  He taught them all the tools available with the read and write app.  The students used Read and Write to practice summarizing an article from the Teaching Kids News website.  Ask your child about the unique frog they read about. This week we will focus on Remembrance Day. The students will have opportunities to read, write and create using this important day as our focus.

I look forward to meeting with parents during our interview evening of November 10 at your scheduled time. The students are reminded to continue to be diligent in completing work to the best of their ability – only their best will do!

We continue to strengthen our team as we learn together!

Have a great week!

With our week starting off on a Halloween sugar high, the grade 5/6 class continued a busy week of activities and learning. The students worked hard on completing assignments and tests in math and also continued the writing process for their Halloween stories. Grade 6 students researched information about invasive species in the Canadian context and we delighted to watch the final few monologue performances in drama.
The grade 6 students attended their third Y-Kids session and I am very proud to relay that other patrons at the YMCA commented on how polite and respectful our students are when they are there!   Inline image 2
We welcome Mr. Bannan back to the class full-time for his six-week practicum experience period. The students and I are excited to have him with us for an extended period of time and look forward to benefitting from his expertise.

Green Club News October 2016

The Green Club has continued to work hard this month. We have visited classrooms once every week to check if lights or Smartboard monitors have been left on when there is nobody in the classroom. This helps conserve energy in our school. We also continue with our weekly waste audits. We check compost bins, black recycle bins, and garbage cans for contamination. We indicate contamination with a “sad face” card or no contamination with a “happy face” card on the individual classroom pocket charts. If there was no contamination, a ‘Reducing Waste’ sign is posted on the door. This helps everyone to reduce waste.

This month we also started our student-led assemblies for Wastefree Wednesdays. As you may already know, school lunches and snacks are a major source of waste and our landfills are reaching capacity. Helping children to pack a wastefree lunch or snack is just one way to learn to reduce, reuse, and recycle.  Wastefree Wednesdays encourage students to use recyclable/reusable containers in their lunches and snacks.  Once a month, each class has a draw and one student per class receives a small prize at our assembly for his/her environmental efforts.  Please help your child to pack wastefree lunches and snacks.

Andrew Harvey, our Evergreen School Ground Design Consultant, spent 2 mornings working with Junior Green Club members to prepare our school grounds for the changing season. They mulched three new trees by the parking lot, one in the wooded area, and the Butter Nut tree by Willow Street. They also raked leaves from the new grass area, from the raised planter, as well as the paths through the wooded areas. Throughout the month of November, these students will continue to water the newly planted trees with Mr. Nixon and Mr. McGuire.

We ended the month with making some pumpkin bird feeders- the perfect activity for all those post trick-or-treat pumpkins. A big thanks to Mrs. Draper for those extra mini-pumpkins! What a great way to get more use out of our harvest Halloween pumpkins!!! Hopefully these pumpkin bird feeders will attract little birds for us!

St. Anthony Connects – The week of September 26 – 30

St. Anthony Superstars!
(Based on Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations)

Well done Kindergarten and Primary Language Class students! Your “I Care” assembly last week was fantastic! Through a short video and a storybook, these students identified concrete examples of caring (for example: sharing with friends, helping family members, caring for pets, donating cans of food, raising money and walking for an important cause like the Terry Fox annual school event, etc.).

Until the end of October, all students are encouraged to demonstrate acts of kindness and caring. Tokens will be given to students when caught caring. At the end of each week, Mr. McGuire will announce the class with the most tokens and this winning class will be named the St. Anthony Superstars and receive a trophy.

Kindergarten News for September 26-30, 2016

The Kindergarten students are settling into their routines very well.  They return their mailbags daily, they have their lunch kits ready with their water bottles and they come ready for learning!  A special thank you to our partners in education, our wonderful parents for making the transition to a full day learning very successful for our amazing group of students!  As always, we are available to discuss any concerns you may have once all students are safely dismissed at the end of the day, at 3:00pm.  The Kindergarten Team is always at the back door for dismissal and usually able to assist with finding a lost coat, water bottle or to touch base about the day!

We were part of many great school wide initiatives last week.  We attended and participated in our St Anthony Superstars assembly by launching a new Catholic Graduate expectation of “I care”.   The students in Kindergarten stood up in front of the whole school and challenged everyone by asking “What will you do?”

The SK’s also participated in a city wide event called ” Cleaning Up the Capital”. They picked up twigs and debris on the schoolyard.  A great example of caring for our environment.  They also attended a Terry Fox assembly to learn more about our true Canadian Hero.  Thank you for sending in Toonies for Terry!  We will have our Terry Fox Walk on Tuesday September 27th at 9:00 am.  We will start off in the gym with a great pep rally and meet our own special hero, a former student named Sam!  Sam will then lead us all around the school yard for our walk!  Parents feel free to join us!!
Monday is Picture Day at St Anthony School!  Bring your smile!

In the next couple of weeks, the students will be counting to 5 or 10. They will be asked to identify groups of numbers to 5 and 10. Please take some time to review counting to 5 or 10. Ask them to identify ‘How many in a group.’  Rolling dice is a great way to identify groups of numbers and to ask ‘How many..’  Thank you for your support.

Ms Myers Grade One – Two Class

Last week your child arrived home with a creatively decorated “Word Bag!” This is intended as a place where our weekly word wall words can be kept for regular practice. A note accompanied your child’s bag with suggestions for fun activities that can reinforce these sight words. The children were really excited to bring home their first five words!  As part of our health and physical education curriculum, we learned about the importance of proper hand washing. Using resources from Ottawa Public Health, the children reviewed the procedure for proper hand washing and the “Glitterbug” helped us find out if our hands are truly clean or not!  This is an essential habit for the children to practice, especially as we enter cold and flu season. This week we look forward to participating in our Terry Fox walk. It will take place on Tuesday, September 27. Keep those “toonies” coming in!! We have been adding them up each day and our class has raised almost $30.00!! Thank you, again, for your support of this worthwhile activity. A reminder that Monday, September 26 is photo day…hopefully everyone comes with big smiles!

Grade Two-Three Ms Moga’s Class

Fall is here! It’s hard to believe that it’s already the last week of September. Time flies when you’re learning and having fun. Please remember to dress appropriately for the weather.

Reminders– Homework due this Friday, September 30th.

Writing–  This past week the students wrote in their journals. They practiced using the word wall words and personal dictionaries when trying to spell words. We also began our first writing form- recounts! This is similar to a journal; students write about an event or experience giving details in order and include a personal comment at the end. This week I will model how to write a recount, and then we will write one as a class before the students begin their own.

Reading– Last week we discussed two fix-up strategies to help with figuring out words when reading: tap each word when you read, and check the picture. This week the students will see how to use a few more fix-up strategies when reading.
Math- Students have enjoyed playing various games and doing hands-on activities to help with learning place value. This week, we will continue our focus on numbers: we will practice counting by 1’s. 2’s, 5’s, 10’s, 25’s to 200, as well as backwards from 50 by 1’s using number lines and hundreds charts to help.

Science– This past week we discussed how baby animals look different from adult animals- we discovered that animals grow and change in many different ways. We realized that animals can be grouped based on various characteristics. We then began learning about one category- mammals. We will continue discussing mammals this week.

Religion– Last week we learned about the different families we are a part of (home, school, community, church) and how they can help us. This week, the students will be introduced to the Apostles’ Creed and learn how it describes what Christians believe.

Art– Last week, we continued another project using different kinds of lines. Students learned that there are five patterns often found in nature (spiral, meander, packing, branching, and explosion) and created their own “pop-art” pictures using these patterns. We will make a fall themed picture this week.

Have a great week!

Mrs. Manzoli’s Notes for this Week

Last week was a very busy week for  the Grade 3 class.  We had another successful day with our “Friends for Life” where we talked about things we like to do and things we do best at.  We listened to a cute story called “What I do best at”.  Students created posters and wrote the things they liked to do. We look forward to another great day with our friends on Tuesday.  We were inspired by listening to a member of the Terry Fox Foundation on Friday with more stories about who Terry Fox was and the struggles he endured.

grade-3-1

Please continue to bring in those toonies for Terry.  Our walk is scheduled for Tuesday followed by an assembly afterwards.  We hope to reach our goal of $375.  Mother nature was on our side while the Grade 3 class participated in cleaning the Capital Friday morning. The students worked as a team as we weeded our garden in our school yard. Our plants now have room to grow. We demonstrated that WE CARE, our new Superstar Theme for this term.

Learning Goals for this week…

In Language Arts we are on our way towards our third daily 5 station.  We have been working on what we do when ‘reading to self’ and ‘reading to someone’. Things we have been talking about are:  How do know when a book is Just Right?  How do we use our 5 finger rule? How can our reading buddy help with our Fix Up strategies?  This week the students will be introduced to ‘Listening to Reading’.  We continue to use ‘Raz Kids’  a web-based reading program.  Students may access this program through their student portal.  We will also begin looking at how to be a good writer by looking at proper sentence structures when we write.  How do you write a proper sentence?

In Math, we continue to work on number sense and place value of a number.  Students were able to show numbers in standard form and expanded form. This week we will use Mathletics to practice these concepts.  They will be given their usernames and passwords to be able to access this program at home.

In Science we have begun our first unit on Soils and the students were able gather different samples of soil and examine what soil is made of.

Reminders for this week…

  • Students borrowed their first book from the library last week. They need to return them by Wednesday in order to be able to borrow a new book.
  • It’s picture day on Monday, come to school with your smile. : )
  • Homework folders are due on Friday.

Mrs. Rupnik’s Class

This week in the Primary Language Class, we will focus on journal writing using new vocabulary for the season of Autumn. As they write, students will be encouraged to center on the individual writing goals set last week.

Some other important notes:

*  Picture day is on Monday, September 26

* Thank-you for sending a toonie for our annual Terry Fox walk. We will continue to collect toonies all week. The Terry Fox walk is scheduled for the morning of Tuesday, September 27th.

* Remember to return the September homework calendars signed on Wednesday, September 28, 2016.

* As our days get shorter and the weather cools, please remember to dress your child appropriately for recess.

* We are beginning Guest Reader sessions soon. One day each month, a Guest Reader will visit and read a story to the class. I will present the class with a riddle and together we will try to figure out who is coming. This is a great language activity because it involves vocabulary, logic reasoning, exclusion, listening to the main idea, etc.   If you are interested and have a small amount of time to spare, consider volunteering for one session (about 15 minutes). Please write me a note in the agenda and I will contact you to set up a specific day/time.  It’s a real good way to involve parents and demonstrate to students that adults like moms and dads read too!

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

Happy Fall!!!  I hope everyone brings their smiles for picture day on Monday! A great way to start the week – with lots of smiles!

The students enjoyed a powerful presentation on Friday from a representative from the Terry Fox Foundation. She was a wonderful motivator as we prepare for our 5th Annual Terry Fox Event on Tuesday.  You are welcome to join us on Tuesday morning as we walk the streets of our community, all in the name of Terry Fox and cancer research.

The students enjoyed our first “Text Talk” with the story of “ A Bad Case of the Stripes”.  Ask your child to retell the story and the wonderful message that it sent to the kids.  In short – Be yourself!!!

They have also learned our first 6 “WOW” words: contagious, distraction, altered, remedies, vanished and perplexed. Ask your child what they mean and to use them in a sentence for you.

We have begun our lessons on Digital Citizenship and will continue with these meaningful lessons this week.

Their homework duotangs will be sent home Monday with a special assignment. They will be preparing for their first Book Talk.  We will go over the expectations in class and they will bring home the outline to share with you.  They will be asked to choose a book, at their reading level, and to share the story and feelings about it orally to the class.

In math, we continue to work with numbers.  We have started estimating and rounding numbers to 10, 100, 1000, 10 000.  These are skills that can be practiced orally with any number that pops up in the environment. The students have also been signed up with Mathletics. This will be a valuable tool we will be using throughout the school year.  Assignments will be assigned at school and will also be assigned for homework at times.

Lots going on – it’s all good stuff!!

Reminders:  Money for pizza and milk is due by Friday, Sept. 30.

                   Library day is Wednesday.

Gym days are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday

Mrs Colaiacovo’s Grade five-six class

Another busy week was passed in the grade 5/6 class as the students participated in soccer tournaments (girls) and tryouts (boys), swimming lessons, assemblies, our first Papa Jack popcorn fundraising sale and still covered a whole lot of important curriculum in math, language arts, and science! We continue moving forward with number sense and numeration as students take what they have learned about place value and move into adding and subtracting whole and decimal numbers. We began our digital literacy unit last week during language arts and will continue this week. Our student teacher, Mr. Bannan returned on Wednesday and had the students investigating and plotting biodiversity in our school yard. He will be with us every Wednesday for the next 6 weeks, then return to the classroom every day until the Christmas break.

Our week begins with photo day on Monday, September 26, our 5th annual Terry Fox event on Tuesday, boys soccer tournament on Wednesday and on-going cross-country tryouts throughout the week. I am happy to report a 100% return rate of the students’ first homework assignment!!! This week, I will be sending the homework duo tang with mathematics only again. The students will also be getting their first book talk assignment of the year, but I will be sending this electronically and will ask students to do their preparation for the talk in a Google document.
A reminder that students need to be attending school consistently and on time each day. These routines are essential to their continued acadenic and social development. In addition, if you have not already done so, please send activity fees and forms to school as soon as possible. Some students are still not changing into indoor shoes. Please ensure that your son/daughter has a pair of running shoes designated for indoor use. Thank you for your continued support of your child’s learning.
