Teacher notes:

The Kindergarten classes:

The Kindergarten students are invited to wear their Halloween costumes to school on

Friday, October 31st. Please ensure your child is safe and comfortable in his/her

costume and that a bag be included in the knapsack to hold the costume. They will be

allowed to wear the costume until lunch time and then they will remove the costumes

and place them in the bag for the remainder of the day. Labelling props is

recommended to ensure all the parts of the costume return home with your child’s

costume.

We ask that plastic weapons (i.e. pitchforks, swords, and guns) stay at home.

download the free app if you are connecting from an iPad. If you have difficulties, please let me

know.

here is an excerpt from Michael Stashin’s website – Michael is the designer of the Fun2Run Program:

Michael is a running instructor (www.runeffortlessly.com) working with the Healthy Active Living and Obesity (HALO) research group through the CHEO Foundation to promote healthy active living among kids in the Ottawa region. Collaboratively Michael and HALO developed a Fun2Run non-competitive running program for elementary school children grades 4 through 6. Tracking a cohort - grade 6 school results

Tracking a cohort – grade 6 Board results

Tracking a cohort grade 6 - School results

Tracking a cohort grade 6 – School results

Continuing our series on EQAO – Tracking a cohort – Grade 6 our school compared to the OCSB Board.  Take a good look at these two charts.  In the areas of reading, writing and math, students at St. Anthony are compared with their fellow students across the school board.

The data is interesting – here are some points about St. Anthony and the school board:

Math 12% of St. Anthony students did not meet the standard in Grade 3 but met it in Grade 6

5% of OCSB students did not meet the standard in Grade 3 but met it in Grade 6

Writing  88% of St. Anthony students met the provincial standard in Grade 3 and Grade 6

74% of OCSB met the provincial standard in Grade 3 and Grade 6

Reading 67% of OCSB students met the provincial standard in Grade 3 and Grade 6;

18% of OCSB  did not meet the standard in Grade 3 but met it in Grade 6;

38% of St. Anthony students met the provincial standard in Grade 3 and Grade 6;

62% of St. Anthony Students did not meet the standard in Grade 3 but met it in Grade 6;

tracking a cohort - reading

These are amazing results!  in writing our students have made huge gains in reading (62%) better gains in math than the OCSB (12% to 5%)

and 88% of students met provincial standards in writing in grade 3 and 6 while 74% of OCSB students met the standard in grades 3 and 6.

One area of concern – in writing, 12% of our students made the standard in grade 3 but failed to make the standard in grade 6

EQAO Results

Over the next few posts, I am going to feature in graphic form the EQAO results from 2013 – 2014 for grade 3 and 6.  We can learn a tremendous amount about our school community by reviewing and discussing these results.

Today – parent engagement in the areas of reading, computer use, agendas and generally talking about school.

EQAO Results

I am continuing presenting a series of slides for staff and parents on last year’s EQAO results.  Today, I am featuring two slides on parent engagement – what percentage of parents are involved in their sons and daughters education?  The results are based on the student questionnaires taken during testing last year.  What do these results tell us?

Parent engagement - grade 6
Parent engagement – grade 3 2014

While 62% of grade 3 students say they talk about school with their parents, only 19% say they read with their parents and 38% use a computer together on a regular basis.  Is there anything we can do to improve these results?  Do these results have an impact on our students’ scores?

Parent engagement Grade 6 2014
Parent engagement Grade 6 2014

If we look at the grade 6 results, we can see that 9% of students read with their parents one to three times a week, O% of parents read to their children daily.  Only 9% of parents use the computer with their children daily.  Clearly this is a trend that we have to take seriously.  Is there anything we can do to encourage parents to become more engaged in the work of their children?

This is something we all need to work on together if we want to improve our results on EQAO testing.  How can we do this?

Tomorrow – student attitudes towards reading and writing.

St. Anthony Connects – the week of October 14 – 17

Thanks for everyone’s support. We estimate that currently we are in 8th or 9th place nationally in the Education Category. Round Two begins on Friday and we will continue to look for more community partners, parents, students and OCSB staff to support our bid for a new school ground!!

Teacher notes for the week of Oct 14-17

Developing self-regulation skills in Full Day Kindergarten.

Developing self-regulation skills in Full Day Kindergarten.

Ms. Myers Grade 1 class:

This week in Grade 1…..As part of health education, our school Public Health Nurse will be visiting our class to review the importance of proper hand washing. She will be bringing the “Glitterbug” in and students will have an opportunity to see how well they can wash away germs!  Remember to ask your child about the “Glitterbug” as we encourage healthy habits both at school and home!

Library book borrowing has begun!  Please encourage your child to take responsibility for his/her book by returning it each Wednesday ☺

Ms. Rupnik’s class: We will focus on ‘think-marks’ this week.  ‘Think-marks’ involves stopping while reading and thinking about the story on a deeper level. Students use post-it notes and record their thinking when reading with the assistance of myself and our wonderful volunteer.  This allows us to talk about our thinking and to better understand the stories we read. The morning class will also continue to practise for our Thanksgiving mass scheduled for Friday, October 17, 2014 at 9:00am.

September 30 newsletter for Ms. Rupnik’s class

Gr.4 Immersion:Structures langagières à utiliser durant un «montre et raconte» (show & tell).

EQAO at a Glance

For the next few days I will share with you some of the data available on EQAO – this is basically an extension of the work we did during the PD day.

Today – Tracking a Cohort in the School, Levels by Grade: In Same School for Grade 3 (2010–2011) and Grade 6 (2013–2014)

These graphs track a cohort – the grade 6 students from last year – and shows how they did in math, reading and writing in 2010-2011 and again in 2013-2014.  This is very good news for our students – in each category, the students have moved up with more students meeting or surpassing the provincial standard in all categories.  This is a really good sign that we as a school are heading in the right direct in all three areas.  The evidence shows that we believe in a growth mindset for our students!

PD Day

Teacher Notes for the week:

Ms. Rupnik:  What’s happening in the Primary Language Class next week?

While writing in our journals this week, we will revisit our writing goals we set early in September. In our Social Language program, we will role-play how to start and end conversations with our friends. You may want to practise this skill at home.

Ms. Myers:  This week in Grade One….

• Five more word wall words will be in your child’s agenda on Monday! Please have them read the words to you, cut them out and add them to their “Word Wizard Bags!” Practising these high-frequency words helps build your child’s confidence when reading.

• We will be talking about things that we are thankful for in our lives and making a special placemat that the children will take home for Thanksgiving.
