FDK News for March 29-April 1, 2016

Happy Easter!  We wish you the best of the Easter season to you and your family.  We will begin to celebrate new life and new beginnings as we look for special signs around us.  It will be a short week at St Anthony Catholic.  We hope to get out more in our community for neighborhood walks as we look for signs of Spring!  We will also wake up our hibernating bears on Friday April 1st.
We will continue to read about Easter, Spring and new life.  We also continue our fire safety inquiry.  Please watch for a permission form this week as we prepare for our visit to the Fire Station #11 on Preston St.
Have a great week!  the FDK team!

Ms. Myers’ Grade One Class

Happy Easter! This is the greatest feast in our church and we will celebrate for 50 days! This week we will explore the Easter story, focusing on the joy of the Resurrection. Our Lenten journey has ended but we will continue to accept canned food donations until April 1st. Again, thank you for all your support! This Thursday we will enjoy a special theatre production at school called “Camping Royale.” It promises to be a “one of a kind” fairy tale incorporating both drama and dance. Remember to ask your child about it! In science we continue our learning about energy. We will use our school “Little Bits” kits to create mini circuits! Please ensure your child returns their March homework this week as we are heading (very quickly it seems!) into April! Have a great week!

Ms. Moga’s Grade 2 Class:

Happy Easter! I hope everyone enjoyed a great extra long weekend. Our Lenten Journey has come to an end as we celebrate the Easter season. In the classroom, the students finished the week by making Holy Week Wreaths which displayed the events of Holy Week and Easter.

This week in Language, we will be wrapping up our unit on procedural writing. The students will write one more procedural writing piece.

In Math, students will learn to estimate, measure and record perimeter and area using standard units. In Science, the students have learned about the properties of solids and liquids. This week the students will look at the properties of gases, including an experiment to further our understanding.

In Religion, we shift our focus to celebrating the resurrection of Jesus; we will discuss why we take part in mass and why symbols are important for helping us remember and celebrate Easter.

Lastly, we will take some time this week to focus on Health. We will be discussing how to live a “balanced life” (e.g. being active and moderating screen time) and the importance of this to one’s health.

Have a wonderful week!

Mrs. Rupnik’s Class

I hope you enjoyed the long Easter weekend with your family and friends.  This week in the Primary Language Class, we will review the concept of big deal/little deal as part of our Social Language activities.  This concept helps students distinguish what is important from what is not important so that they can be less anxious about situations of lesser importance and take seriously situations of greater importance.  A new book by Jeanie Ransom titled “Don’t Squeal Unless It’s A Big Deal” will be the read to the class throughout the week. Please remember that completed March homework calendars are due back at school on Wednesday, March 30, 2016. Please take some time this week to read our March class newsletter. New April homework calendars will be sent home on Friday, April 1, 2016.

Manzoli Stars this week…

he is risen

Welcome to the last week of March. Last week we journeyed through the last days of Jesus and had an opportunity to learn the sufferings he went through leading to his crucifixion.  We heard stories and journeyed through the stations of the cross to better understand such a Paschal Mystery.  As  we enter into the Easter season we continue to journey through the resurrection of Jesus and the new life he brings to us.  During Religion,  we will complete our story of “Benjamin’s Box”.

As we move forward this week we also continue to work on our narrative stories.  Students have been working diligently using the writing process to create their stories (Plan, first draft, revise, edit and publish).  We will be moving into procedural writing next.  We will also be having a word quiz on Friday.  Students should be practising these words during the week as part of their homework routines.  In Reading,  we work on comprehension of the text and fluency. Students continue to read to self every morning as part of their morning routines, continue to encourage your children that reading should be done on a regular basis at home too.

In Math last week we explored symmetry in shapes and figures.  This week we will explore how shapes and figures turn, flip and slide along a grid.  This will end our unit on geometry.  We will be moving into multiplication and division next.

In Science in Grade 3 students will begin their next unit on Structures and mechanisms, we will be building a structure made out of recycled material.  Students are asked to bring in material that can be recycled for this project.

We have begun our dance unit in gym, students are working in teams to create a 3-minute dance. On Thursday we will be able to experience a form of dance and drama in a performance called

“Camping Royale Theatre”

LEARNING GOAL

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the elements of dance and drama through critiquing a performance, engaging in curriculum-centred activities, and creating and performing themselvesdancers

I would like to wish all families a Happy Easter season!

Teacher Notes for the week

FDK News for March 21-March 24

Happy Spring!   Welcome back to school.  We hope you had a happy and safe. March Break with your family!  We will prepare for Holy Week as we continue on our Lenten Journey.  We will participate in the Stations of the Cross on Thursday morning at 9:00 am at St Anthony Church.  We will read some special stories for Holy Week to prepare for the upcoming Easter Season.
We will continue our theme of fire safety by reading more information in our booklets.  Students made fire hats, fire trucks and acted like firefighters.  Stay tuned for our walking field trip to our local Fire Station#11 in a few weeks!
Wishing you and your family a wonderful Easter weekend.  The FDK Team!

Ms. Myers Grade One Notes

I hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing March Break! We look forward to a short but busy week back at school! This week is “Holy Week”. It marks the last week of the Lenten season.  Each day we will spend some time thinking about the final events of Jesus’ life on earth. The children will work on a Holy Week banner that they will bring home and share. Thank you, again, for your generous support of our school Lenten project. We continue to collect canned goods for the Shepherds of Good Hope this week. In science we will continue our study of energy with a focus on electricity. This Tuesday our school will mark “Earth Hour.” We will work without using any electricity from 10:00-11:00 a.m. During this time we will brainstorm for ways we can conserve energy at home and school. In math we will focus on how we measure time – beginning with days, weeks, months, years, hours, and minutes. Real life opportunities to connect daily/monthly activities in your home with calendars and clocks help build your child’s sense and concept of time. The “Wonderful Ones” did a great job sharing their 3-D shape riddles with the kindergarten class. They set a terrific example for our younger students, sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm! Way to go!

Grade 2 News- Ms. Moga

Welcome back from March Break! I hope everyone had an enjoyable and restful week off. I can’t wait to read and hear about all the things the grade 2s did over the break.

In Language, we are continuing with procedural writing. On the last Friday, we made hot chocolate together and the students finished their graphic organizers for “How To Make Hot Chocolate”. This week, the students will work on editing and then writing their good copies.

In Math, we wrapped up nonstandard measurement and will be moving on to measuring with standard units (centimetres and metres). We have also been discussing the calendar and temperature during our morning meetings, which ties into the measurement unit.

In Science, we began the unit on Understanding Matter. We discussed what matter is and focused on the properties of solids. We will discuss liquids this week and possibly conduct an experiment to solidify our understanding.

It is Holy Week! Our Lenten Journey will be coming to an end as we move towards the celebration of Easter. We will further discuss the events of Holy Week and their significance. The grade 2s will be teaming up with the Kindergartens to present at our upcoming Easter Mass. More information on this will follow.

Have a great week!

Waste Audit March 2, 2016 Results and Report – a great report by the Green Team!

Assembly: Friday, March 11 @ 2:00 p.m.

Andrea: St. Anthony Catholic School collected garbage, compost, and paper recycling on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 for our second school wide waste audit.   On Wednesday, March 2, the Green Club weighed the bags of garbage, compost, and paper recycling. We also looked at what items were in each bag.

Mohamed: For the recycling paper audit, we found 99% of what we put in the black recycle bin is actually recyclable which is excellent.  Remember only paper and cardboard goes in the black recycle bins.

Anarrisa: For the compost bins, we found 100% of what we put into the compost bin goes in the compost bin. We found bananas, apples, paper towel, and tissue in these bins. This is FANTASTIC.

Justin: For the garbage, we found 60% of what we put in the garbage can is actually garbage.  That means that 40% of what we throw out should go somewhere else like the compost bin.  Only wrappers go into the garbage. All yogurt containers, juice boxes, plastic spoons or forks go back home- remember these are ‘boomerang ‘ items. All paper towel or tissues go into the compost bin too.  The staff room garbage really really needs improving.

Michael: So the next time, you decide to throw something out in the garbage- think again and again! Make sure it is truly garbage. If you are not sure, just ask a teacher or a friend.  We will continue to have weekly waste checks and audits until the end of the school year.

Mrs. Rupnik’s Class

Welcome back everyone! Easter vocabulary will be the focus this week in the Primary Language Class.   We will work on telling the story of Easter using simple pictures. We will also revisit ‘recount writing’ in our journals.  Remember to keep helping your child with the homework calendar. When you support your children’s homework routine, you help them do better at school.

March 21 – March 25

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

Welcome back!  I hope everyone enjoyed an enjoyable and rejuvenating March Break!

The storytelling was a wonderful success.  Some of our students were so proud of their hard work in preparing their stories that they volunteered to share their new found skills with other classes in our school.  Congratulations to all our students for their great efforts.

The Grade 4/5 students have been working on their procedural writing.  They have learned how important it is to edit their work and to make every effort to “Bump Up” their writing with colourful language and carefully placed punctuation. Their final drafts will be ready for display in the near future.

Our focus for this week will be Holy Week.  The students will be reading, writing and using google slides to learn and teach others about the important events that occur during this very important time in our Catholic Faith.  As a result, they will be fully prepared to celebrate the great joy of Easter.

Just a reminder that the students are very fortunate to have access to their own chromebooks.  They should be using them to access learning materials and sites which will help them in their everyday learning.  They also need to be coming to school daily, charged and ready to access for daily lessons.

Thank you for your ongoing support!!

Teacher Notes for the week

FDK News for March 7-11, 2016

What an eventful week at St. Anthony School.  We started the week with an amazing presentation from the Earth Rangers.  We were all amazed at the animals they brought to show us.  We really listened to the important messages about conservation and protection of many animals.  On Wednesday we joined our Reading Buddies in the Learning Commons for some excellent storytelling from two of our Grade 4/5 buddies.  We also had a visit from Ms. Lucy for our Rosary Program.  On Friday, we had our Winter Play Day!  Our FDK students enjoyed playing mini-stick hockey, searching for treasure, painting in the snow, scooping snow relay, an obstacle course, sleigh rides, and drinking hot chocolate and marshmallows.  A special thank you to our Grade 4/5 students who participated, led and encouraged our FDK students during the entire Play Day!  The Grade 4/5 truly displayed their kindness!  The FDK students caught the Grade 4/5 class caring!

This is the last week before March Break!  We will continue graphing in Math.  We will get out to enjoy some of the milder weather this week during our recess time.  We continue on our Lenten Journey by collecting cans for the Shepherds of Good Hope.  We will continue to focus on Dr. Seuss stories and rhyming words and word families.  We will visit the gym and the Learning Commons and we will be a part of our monthly assembly and pizza day on Friday!  Have a great week!  We wish all of our families a fun, happy and safe March Break!

Ms. Myers Grade One News

We enjoyed another busy week together! On Wednesday we joined classes across North America to virtually “meet” Peter Reynolds, a popular children’s author. Using our Discovery Education resource, we logged in and listened as Mr. Reynolds introduced his newest book Going Places. He talked about what  it’s like to be a writer and how he get his ideas. We hope to participate in another “virtual fieldtrip” in April for Earth Day! In math this week we will wrap up our exploration of 2-D and 3-D shapes so we will be ready to start our study of time when we return from March Break. Our vocabulary building activities include choosing “WOW” words from the story Harry the Dirty Dog. Ask your child about the new words we add to our “Wow Words” board! In religion we will focus on the story of the Prodigal Son as we explore the themes of forgiveness and making amends. Thank you for your continued support of our school Lenten project.  We will continue to collect cans this week as well as the week we return from March Break. I hope everyone has a chance to enjoy the March Break. Here’s hoping spring weather is on its way!

grade 1Ms. Moga’s Grade 2 Class:

The grade 2s had a great first week of March! Almost everyone had the chance to explain and share about their Simple Machine playground equipment. We had lots of slides, swings, see-saws, and even a couple zip-lines! Anyone who didn’t present yet will have a chance this week.

In Language, we will continue with our unit on procedural writing that we began last week.

In Math, we are continuing with Measurement; however, we will turn our focus to linear measurement (with nonstandard and standard units).

In Science, we will be beginning the unit on Matter. In grade 2, the focus is on Properties of Solids and Liquids.

Our Lenten journey is in the final stretch. We continue to have discussions on how we can be more like Jesus by serving others. This week, we will read the story of Lazarus and begin to look at the events of Holy Week and their significance.

Have a great week!

Ms. Moga

Grade 2-2grade 2

here are some of the tech tools we are using during math

Mrs. Rupnik’s Class

In the Primary Language Class this week, we will start looking at fiction and non-fiction stories with matching themes and topics. Students will listen to Mr. Egg, a fiction book, and later A Nest Full of Eggs, a non-fiction book filled with real facts. Then students will compare the two books and begin to identify distinguishing features of non-fiction books and fiction books.

Enjoy your week long March Break!  Remember repetition reinforces learning for your child.  Ten to fifteen minutes a day can really help, whether it’s reading a favourite book together, measuring ingredients in the kitchen, writing a shopping list, or playing a board game.

Happy March Break!

Manzoli stars this week…..

This will be our last week before March Break begins.  We all look forward to being able to spend some time to relax and enjoy some fun activities.  Time to rejuvenate and hoping that Spring is around the corner.

As we look at our week ahead we will be working on editing our Narrative stories and fine tune them before final draft.  The students are learning how important it is to make your writing:  Attract the reader, make sense by proof reading and look good with proper spelling, punctuation and spacing.  This week we will look at how to add dialogue into our stories.

In Math, we will move to looking at 3 dimensional shapes and explore the properties of these figures.  Some vocabulary words we will be using are: congruent, prisms, pyramids, vertices.

Last week we listened as we heard a talk from the Shepherds of Good Hope and how we are making a difference by providing the perishables we are collecting, we continue to talk about this season of lent and how giving to others is one way we prepare our hearts for the coming Holy Week.

Reminders:

  • Library book return on Monday
  • Homework due on Wednesday
  • Pizza Day On Friday

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

Congratulations to the Grade 4/5 Team for being the winners of the “Caught you Caring” trophy this week!!!  The students are consistently caught caring, however they were especially caring as they helped with the kindergarten winter playday.  They demonstrated great leadership skills as they guided the kinders through a variety of fun winter activities.  There were lots of smiles on one of the last beautiful winter days of the season. Good times!

The grade 4/5s had a wonderful in-service with a technology specialist, Mr. Moleski who taught us how to access many useful tools on the students laptops and Chromebooks.  His focus was on the Read and Write app that aids students with any reading or writing tasks.

We also learned how to summarize a news article.  As part of the students homework this week, the students are to complete summarizing the article and answer the questions related to the article. This activity complements our sequencing and procedural writing focus this month.

The students will be taking home their homework duotang on Monday to complete the newly added activities.  They must also complete the summarizing article, as well as work on Dreambox for 30 minutes to review multiplication and division. All work is to be completed and submitted by Friday.

We continue our Lenten Journey with discussions and Bible readings to help us relate better and become closer to Jesus and the life he lived.  We are doing our part by continuing to donate canned fruit and vegetables to the Shepherds of Good Hope.

We will return from the March Break just in time to observe Holy Week.

The students are encouraged to read each evening. If they are spending time on their chromebooks it should be on raz kids, dreambox, mathletics or accessing  lots of other educational resources available at their fingertips.

Have a wonderful March Break enjoying plenty of time in the great outdoors with family and friends!

Ms. Colaiacovo’s grade 5/6 class notes

March came in like a lion with a 15cm snow storm…..which means it should hopefully be going out like a lamb?! The students are reminded of the importance of dressing for the weather, which includes (until all the snow is gone) wearing snow pants, boots, hats and mitts.

It was a very busy week last week. Our school was fortunate to host an Earth Rangers Assembly on Tuesday last week and all students had the opportunity to see, up close, some of Canada’s endangered species. The 5/6 class participated in a workshop in the afternoon about global warming. The students enjoyed being farmers and planning for Eco-friendly ways to provide for their farms. The grade 6 students enjoyed a morning of “classes” at Notre Dame High School this past Thursday. The teachers and admin staff at Note Dame warmly welcomed them and gave them a taste of what to expect next year.
In the coming week (the last before the March Break!!) we will finish the measurement strand in math and begin working on strategies for persuasive writing. I wish all of you a safe and enjoyable break!
