 Ecoschool Site Visit- AM

Site visits take 30-45 minutes and have two main parts:

  1. Conversation: Members of the Eco-Team will have a conversation guided by questions. Sample of question listed below.
  2. Walkabout: A short walkabout will take place to assess energy and waste practices. The assessor will ask to see specific areas of the school (e.g., garbage/recycling collection site, classrooms, cafeteria, computer lab etc.) and may ask about specific initiatives relating to the information found in the school’s application.

Points may be awarded or deducted based on the assessor’s observations.

Note: All schools will be submitting paperless portfolios in 2015. Online portfolio documents will be assessed prior to the assessor’s arrival at each school.

Finalization process: Assessors will review the site visit observations/notes and submit the assessed application to Ontario Eco-Schools staff for final review. Board representatives will be advised of the school’s standing when all the schools in the board have been assessed. This will take place before the end of the school year.

Teacher Notes for the Week of June 1 – 5

Ms Myers’ Class- Grade 1

Our trip to Gatineau Park was a great success!  The weather was perfect and the bugs stayed away!

Thanks to our parent volunteers who help make these experiences possible. In math this week we will be exploring probability – the likelihood that something will or won’t occur. On Tuesday we hope that Ms. Wilcox, our Public Health Nurse, will make it in for her visit with us to talk about active transportation and safety. A June newsletter will be going home on Monday. As well, the “Wonderful Ones” will be leading the Morning Announcements (their last time before they are in Grade 2!!). If your child has been asked to say a prayer, please have them practice reading it aloud to you in preparation. We look forward to another short but busy week – Friday, June 5 is a P.D. day!

Mr. Ryan’s Grade 1/2 class

Welcome June! Let’s pray for a beautiful last month to the school year! Homework calendars will be sent homeTuesday. I am still waiting for a few of the students to submit their May homework folders. Last week we had an amazing time at Gatineau Park on our field trip. The children learned a lot about animals, insects, plant life, and habitats. It was a very well organized day and a very big thank you to all of our parent volunteers that were able to accompany. Also, a very big thank you to Ms. Myers for organizing such a fun experience for our students! We did not have our class pic-nic last week and will have it this Wednesday. Again, everything will be provided. They students just need to bring their healthy appetites! In math this week we are learning about fractions. In Language, we are going to be doing word wall activities and working in our language stations. In science, we are learning about living things and plants. A reminder that this Friday is a PD Day and there is no school for students. Hoping everyone has a blessed week!

Ms. Rupnik’s PLC Class

June homework calendars come home on Monday, June 1, 2015. The Google short/long vowel books will be sent home on Monday as well. Please take some time to sit with your child and have him/her read it to you!  I hope you are as proud of their hard work as I am.  We will also continue our work on the play Chicken Little and begin to add gesture/actions to our words.  Have him/her practise with you at home daily.  Invitations will be sent home at the end of the week. We look forward to having you visit with us.

Depave Paradise

3

Depave Paradise is back!

Last year, we removed more than 100 square meters of asphalt from the Kitchissippi Church parking lot.

This year, with the help of the community, we’re going to do the same for St. Anthony Catholic School.

Depave Paradise addresses the proliferation of hard surfaces in modern urban environments through the primal act of ripping up unused pavement and replacing it with soil and vegetation. Volunteers “liberate the soil,” using hand tools to pry up the pavement. Native plants, bushes and trees are then planted to act as filters and sponges for polluted stormwater runoff. The events attract media and political attention, and raise awareness of the issues surrounding the urban water cycle, while making measurable environmental impacts, reducing runoff and contamination and increasing green space.

June 20th is depaving day – food, friends, activities and a handful of pry bars is all we need to have a good time and make Ottawa just that much greener.

If you’d like to get involved please see our volunteer sign-up page.

Teacher Notes for the week

Ms Rupnik’s Class

This week in the Primary Language Class, we will spend time observing and watering our little vegetable garden we started 2 last weeks ago with the Growing up Organic organization. We will also work on our play ‘Chicken Little’. In our Social Language program, we will continue to focus on using self-control at school and at home.

Ms Myers class

This Tuesday morning we will be going on our trip Gatineau Park. Please listen to the forecast for the day so that your child is prepared for the weather. Undoubtedly, there will be bugs!  Long sleeve shirts and long pants will help protect your child from unwanted bites.  As well, please pack a healthy lunch that includes water. We will be eating our lunch at the park following our hike. In math we have been practicing the strategies of “counting on” and “making ten” to help us add numbers efficiently. This week we will practice our “double facts” (2+2, 3+3, etc.). The grade ones and grade 4/5 class did a super job of introducing the next “St. Anthony Superstars” goal – “I Have a Voice” at last week’s assembly. Way to go!

Ms Myers – Grade 1

Hopefully everyone’s bean plant made it home safely last week! We have loved observing these amazing

beanstalks grow before our very eyes! If you are able to replant your child’s bean plant in a garden, it will

produce lovely scarlet flowers – and hopefully a few beans!! In math this week we will be working on

strategies that help us when we are adding (e.g. counting on from a larger number and knowing “double

facts” ). In Family Life we will begin our unit “Created Sexual: Male and Female.” A note will go home on

Tuesday with further information for families. The grade ones will also be exploring the Catholic Graduate

Expectation “I have a voice”. We will be considering things like: I speak, write, and listen as Jesus would

want me; I am honest; I think carefully before I react and speak. We look forward to a short but busy

week!

Ms Rupnik’s Class

This short week, we would like to share the activities we have worked on in our class over the past several weeks, for example our Google slide presentations with personal digital photographs, our Imagistory narratives in video format, the beginnings of our creative stories, etc. On Tuesday, May 19, I will be sending home your child’s Google account information. Take the time to sit with your child and login into his/her drive. Start by checking the Google slide presentations and the Imagistory narratives. You will be impressed! In our Social Language program, we will focus on using self-control. Students will have an opportunity to role-play some ‘cool-off’ situations.

Organic School Gardens

One of Growing Up Organic’s primary roles is to support schools in the establishment and continued activity of their organic school garden programs. To this end, we offer a number of services to schools across Ottawa. Click here for a map showing locations of schools we have partnered with throughout the years.

School Gardens

Our GUO program partners with individual schools to establish vegetable gardens on school grounds as the basis for experiential education at all grade levels.  We develop and deliver garden-based workshops that are linked to the Ontario curriculum. Interested in working with GUO to set up an organic garden at your school? Teacher Notes for the week

Ms Myers Grade One Class

This coming week we will explore how to measure the capacity of different containers. If you are cooking at home, include your child in measuring out ingredients, this will help them to see the real life application of skills we learn in mathematics. In language, the “Wonderful Ones” are busy writing their own narratives. We have some great story-tellers in the class! This week the children will bring home the “re-telling” bracelets they made. They have been using them to talk about the important parts of a story – the beginning (characters, setting), the middle (main events/problem) and the ending (how the problem was solved). Encourage your child to use their bracelet at home when talking about their library and home reading books. Permission forms for our Gatineau Park trip went home last week. Please ensure you sign and return this form to school so everyone will be included on May 26! Thank you!

Greening News!
After a very  long and cold winter, Spring has finally arrived!  With the warm sunny weather upon us, the Green Club has started Weeding Wednesdays sessions during lunch hour recess. Equipped with garden gloves and some tools, students in the Green Club remove weeds from the flower beds found inside the playground area once a week. This will encourage the daffodils, tulips, lilies and other plants to grow and blossom.  It’s also an important learning opportunity for the students.  When students work in gardens, they experience being in nature and learn to take care of living things.  Way to go, Green Club!

Teacher Notes for the Week

Ms Myers Class

This week we finished up our exploration of fractions. The students had a great time making their own pizza and dividing it into equal parts – before consuming it with great enthusiasm! Or visit from Bev Wilcox, our school public health nurse, was re-scheduled to this Monday. Ms. Wilcox will talk about active transportation and safety. A May newsletter and homework calendar will be going home on Monday as well as a permission form for an upcoming trip to Gatineau Park. Please look for these items in your child’s agenda. On Tuesday we will visit the Rosemount Library to learn about the wonderful opportunities they have on offer for children and families. Please join in some of our Catholic Education Week activities if you can. Coffee and treats will be available each morning before school – come and have your family portrait taken by Mr. McGuire!

Ms Rupnik’s Class

Welcome to Catholic Education Week! We have many special activities planned this week, starting with our Open House on Tuesday, May 5. This will be a time to welcome the new students who will be joining the Primary Language Class in the fall.  Please visit “St. Anthony Connects” blog for information on Catholic Education Week (stanthonyconnects.edublogs.org).  We will also move from telling stories to writing stories independently, using the special anchor chart we created 2 weeks ago.   Ask your child about the class story we created together titled ‘The Surprise Visitor’ (prompt: What story did you write with Mrs. Rupnik about a dragon in the tub?).

Mr Cook grade 1/2

Welcome to the 1st week of May! Mother Nature has been very kind to us so far and we will be praying for beautiful weather this week! The students have earned a reward for beating Mr. Cook 10 times at fixing our morning messages. They have requested a class pic-nic. They wrote a persuasive journal entry to try and convince me why they should have a pic-nic. I was definitely convinced! This will happen in the next couple of weeks. Great job boys and girls! This week, we will focus on patterning and algebra in math. We will be continuing our persuasive writing unit as well. The students wrote amazing pieces last week on why St. Anthony is the best! They will be posted on our bulletin board. Come by and read them! Don’t forget to have your child pack their library book in their bags for Monday. Homework calendars are going home this week. At St. Anthony this week we are celebrating Education Week. Parents are invited to visit the school at their convenience this week and see all of the great things we have been up to and that are going on. We wish our Grade 2 friends participating in their Reconciliation and First Communions this upcoming weekend the very best on this special occasion! Let’s have an extraordinary week!!
