Winter Walk Day

Winter Walk Day: #walktoschool

Students go out for first recess.  They eat snack and go to the washroom BEFORE going out.
After recess the students line up and we go for one lap around the playground with the kindergartens.
We then proceed out the gates onto Booth Street and walk to Dows Lake. I can lead with my class and maybe have the Grade 6 class bring up the back.
When we get to Dow’s lake we will take a walk around and see if there are any sculptures or sights to see.
Then we will head back up Booth street HOME!
When we return there will be cups with hot chocolate waiting in your classrooms.  Hot water will need to be added to the mix.  Then serve!
Students will eat their lunch and talk about the wonderful walk they just experienced!
Parent help is very welcome!!
That’s all!!!
Thanks Ms.Troccoli for putting this together!!

FDK News for Februaury 1-5, 2016
It’s February!  We are very excited to begin a new month of learning in Kindergarten and happy to say goodbye to January!  It was nice to see some new snow last week on the schoolyard to cover the ice and give us some great opportunities to roll snowballs and make shapes in the snow.  We also had a chance to participate in a school-wide reading buddies program for Family Literacy Day.  This Monday is Winter Walk Day.  Our FDK students will participate with the whole school to do a few laps of the school yard and to have Fizz the mascot join us!  We will also kick off this month with a new theme of “I Care”.  There will be a school-wide assembly on Friday!  Our FDK students are enjoying our “Caught You Caring” campaign and are doing random acts of kindness!  Ask your child if they have been caught caring!  We are focusing on using kind words, showing respect to others, sharing and caring!  We are off to a great start and it is great to see all students trying their best!  They are even catching each other caring and telling a teacher about the kind acts!  Way to go FDK!!

Ms. Myers’ Grade One class

Mrs. Manzoli’s class proved to be “Shining Stars” for the “Wonderful Ones” this past week! They shared their love of reading and books with us as we read together for Literacy Day and they also showed great leadership as they helped the grade ones navigate a new math website called “Mathletics.” Thanks so much to our Grade 3/4 buddies!  We begin this week with our “Winter Walk” on Monday. This is an Ottawa Public Health initiative to promote healthy, active lifestyles. Please check the weather forecast and ensure your child is dressed appropriately for our walk. In math, we continue working on our understanding of whole numbers.  In language we are focusing on adding detail to our sentences using describing words. Look for a new homework calendar and class newsletter that will be in your child’s agenda this week!

Ms. Moga’s Grade Two class

It’s hard to believe February is already here! We start the month with a busy week. On Monday, the grade 2s will participate in a Winter Walk with the whole school. We will be walking to Dow’s Lake and back, so please check the weather and dress accordingly.

On Friday, the grade 2s are presenting the next school virtue, which is “I Care”. Students will be bringing home their words to practice for Friday’s presentation.

In language, we’re wrapping up Asking Questions. The students are working towards understanding that asking questions deepens their comprehension. We will read a couple more intriguing texts and complete question webs to show our thinking.

In math, we are focused on geometry. The students are working on identifying and describing various polygons and sorting and classifying them by their geometric properties (number of sides, number of vertices).

In science, we are exploring the six types of simple machines.

Have a great week!

In Mrs. Manzoli’s Class this week…

Welcome to February!  We are at the halfway point to spring.  We will see what Willie the groundhog has to say on February 2nd, Groundhog Day.  We continue to enjoy our winter days by our winter walkathon on Monday.  We will be escorted by our mascot Phiz to Dow’s Lake.

In language this week we will wrap up our descriptive writing unit as we move into our narrative writing unit focusing on Adventure stories.  Our reading strategy will be asking good questions for meaning and determining the important ideas of a text.  Watch out for new words for the week in your child’s agenda.  We will be having our word quiz on Friday.

Last week in Math we focused on telling time.  This week we will be looking at measuring temperature and the important elements of the thermometer.   You can reinforce this skill at home with simple activities.

The students have been enjoying learning about music and this week we will be exploring with some instruments and maybe compose our own tunes.

Reminders:

  • Digital Citizen Project is due this Friday.  The students will be presenting their learning next week.
  • Library book due on Monday
  • Friends for Life on Thursday
  • Popcorn sale on Friday $1

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

We will begin this new month of February with a wonderful Winter Walk to Dow’s Lake.  The Grade 4/5 Class will lead the school on Monday at 10am under the initiative of the Ottawa Public Health to promote an active lifestyle.  With Winterlude in full swing we will see any attractions that may be awaiting for our viewing pleasure.  Parents are welcome to join us while we enjoy this breath of fresh air!

The students will be bringing home their work folder to share with you.  Please enjoy looking over the work with your child.  Students are asked to make any corrections on tests to ensure they are understanding the concepts.  Sign and return the work and folder with your child.

Ski permission forms have gone home with your child.  Please review the information and complete and sign all required areas before returning forms to school by this coming Friday. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact the school.  It is a wonderful winter outing that is always a highlight for the junior students.

The Grade 4/5 students are encouraged to continue to review math facts regularly to help with all concepts and strands taught in math.  Also, they should be enjoying quality time reading each evening to help with their vocabulary and comprehension in all areas of the curriculum.

Have a wonderful week!

 Nora 1Ms. Colaiacovo’s Grade 5-6 February Newsletter

The month of February will bring a flurry of activity to St. Anthony Catholic School and our Grade 5/6 class will be front and centre to this excitement. The students have been working hard during our first term of school and there has been a great emphasis on taking responsibility for organizing their work and using their time wisely to complete assignments to their full potential and ability. During the second half of the school year there will be even greater emphasis placed on accountability and independence, while setting goals to improve their work habits and learning skills. This is an essential skillset, especially for our grade 6 students who will be moving on to the Intermediate Panel next year.

Beginning on February 8th and continuing to the end of April, we welcome Ms. Parmiss Akbari to our class as a student teacher. Ms. Akbari is in her first year of the two-year Bachelor of Education program at the University of Ottawa. We look forward to capitalizing on her expertise in math and science! We have had the privilege of having Ms. Parmiss with us periodically throughout the first term and she has developed a comfortable, mutually respectful and friendly rapport with all the students in our class.

In Math, we will be working to understand the concepts of linear measurements, time, temperature (grade 5), and converting units of linear measurement, and developing/applying area relationships involving two and three dimensional shapes (grade 6). Using measurement is an important life skill that Grade 5 and 6 students are expected to master. Please practice these skills at home to reinforce the concepts that they learn at school. We will also continue working with and reviewing basic math skills on a regular basis. Multiplication facts and multidigit addition and subtraction will continue to be a focus throughout the coming months. These skills will be crucial when we begin our formal instruction on multi-digit multiplication and division. Here are some ways that you can support your child’s learning during this unit:

  •      estimate the length of objects at home and then measure the objects in decimeters or centimetres and compare the results
  •       using a ruler, your child could practice measuring and record findings using millimeters, centimeters, and decimeters and can estimate, then determine the surface area of objects, using the appropriate units of measurement
  •       look for opportunities to read clock faces to measure how long certain activities take to complete in hours and minutes, such as completing homework, watching a video, or getting ready for bed

In Language Arts, the students will focus their reading on determining importance in texts. This is an important concept for students to learn and practice so that they are able to provide detailed summaries of what they have read. Students will be asked to choose a favourite children’s picture book and will be asked to retell the story in a creative presentation in front of the class. We will also practice persuasive writing which will allow us to address curriculum expectations in reading, writing, oral communication and media literacy.

In grade 6 Science, we are finishing our  Biodiversity strand and, as the month progresses, we will  move on to the Electricity strand, which will be taught by Ms. Parmiss.  The students will evaluate the impact of the use of electricity on both the way we live and the environment, investigate the characteristics of static and current electricity, and construct simple circuits and demonstrate an understanding of the principles of electrical energy and its transformation into and from other forms of energy.

In Religion, we will observe the Lenten Season by engaging in prayer, participating in liturgies, finding ways to be more caring and kind to each other, and reaching out to those in need in our school community and our community at large. To that end, we hope to visit St. Luke’s Table to volunteer our services again during this most Holy Season.

In Gym, the students will have the opportunity to experience the joys of winter.  They will enjoy our wonderful downhill ski excursion to Mount Pakenham and participate in other outdoor activities such as snowshoeing during regular physical education classes. We encourage you to take advantage of this beautiful time of the year with your child and embrace our winter wonderland.

Things You Can Do At Home:

  •       Practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts daily.
  •       Set aside time each day for your child to complete his/her homework or to review concepts that have been learned in class.
  •       Have your child read each day for at least 30 minutes and then discuss the story with you (ask your child to summarize what he/she has just read!)

Important dates:

Monday, February 1 – School-wide Winter Walk Day to Dow’s Lake

Wednesday, February 10 – Ash Wednesday. Also,  the final due date for Ski forms and payment

Friday, February 12 – Opportunity to deliver Valentines to classmates

Monday, February 15 – Family Day – Statutory holiday, no school

Thursday, February 18 – Term One report cards will be sent home

Wednesday, February 24th – Junior division downhill ski day at Mount Pakenham

I thank you for your continued support and cooperation. If you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at the school.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Colaiacovo

As the grade 5/6 class winds down the first term and moves into the second term, we hope to continue to build momentum to cap off a successful year. These next few months will be packed with exciting learning and extracurricular activities, as well as preparation for EQAO testing, the Sacrament of Confirmation and transitioning to the intermediate panel for the grade 6 students. We have our work cut out for us!

February will be a very busy month with many noteworthy days such as Groundhog Day on the 2nd, AshWednesday on the 10th, St. Valentine’s Day on the 14th, Family Day on the 15th (statutory holiday), the junior ski day on the 24th (more details on this below), and recognition of the leap year on the 29th.

The students will be finishing up the data management strand of mathematics in the next couple of weeks and we will move into Term 2 with time spent on the measurement strand. The students have had two opportunities to present book talks in the months of December and January for the oral language strand of our language arts curriculum. It is imperative for the students to practice public speaking skills to attain a high level of competence, which will, in turn, also increase their confidence. There will be several other opportunities as we move through next term to demonstrate their knowledge in this area. In grade 6 science, students have been learning about the classification systems in the Five Kingdoms which help explain the concept of biodiversity. The afternoon grade 5/6 students have been participating enthusiastically and enjoying the drama warm-up activities that we have been doing during the month of January. Kimberley and Meaghan from the Somerset West Community Centre have been visiting our class each Thursday  to work with our students on the “Friends for Life” social skills program. We thank them for their continued spirited enthusiasm.

We are all very excited about the junior ski trip at Mount Pakenham ski resort which is scheduled for the24th of February. It is crucial that students return their completed ski forms as soon as possible, even if this means that the $25 participation fee follows at a later date. In addition, please ensure that the information is accurate, as this must be forwarded to the ski hill in order for them to properly prepare the rental equipment for each of the students.

Papa Jack popcorn sales will continue every second Friday (including this coming Friday, February 5th) to raise funds for the year-end grade 6 trip. Thank you for your continued support in this endeavor.

Please continue to support your child’s learning by ensuring that they are present at school, and on time and organized for learning. Please encourage them to set aside time each evening to complete homework assignments to the best of their ability. Thank you,

Teacher Notes for this week

FDK News Week of January 25-January 29, 2016

The FDK students had a great week despite some of the colder days.  If temperatures are below -25 degrees we keep all students indoors for their recess time and outdoor play.  Thank you for all your efforts to send in extra mitts and socks.  Please let our FDK team know if you require anything to keep your child warm throughout the winter months, extra snowsuits, mitts and hats are available at our school.

The FDK Groups participated in an excellent workshop from Hydro Ottawa on Thursday.  This interactive workshop had all students engaged and really emphasized  “safety first!”  Ask your child about ways they can stay safe.

We will continue to explore 2-dimensional shapes such as triangles, squares, circles and rectangles through free exploration using pattern and attribute blocks and shapes.  Students began building 3-dimensional structures using a variety of materials such as foam mats, marshmallows and toothpicks.  It is amazing to see what they create when we give them hands-on materials to explore and inquire!
We will have a school-wide Reading Buddy Day for Family Literacy Day on Wednesday, January 27th, 2016.  A special thank you to Mrs. Iverson, our amazing librarian, for coordinating this great initiative!  Feel free to join us at 10:30 am to snuggle up on a bean bag or comfy chair in our Learning Commons to read!
Looking forward to a snow-filled week of fun and learning!

The FDK Team

Ms. Myers’ Grade One Class

Congratulations to those students who led the morning announcements last week. A terrific job was done by all! Our school community was impressed with the “Wonderful Ones” confidence and ability! We are wrapping up our study of linear measurement this week and will investigate various ways whole numbers are composed (e.g. 5 is the same as 2+3, 4+1, 1+4, etc.) Seeing the parts that make up the whole number helps your child develop flexibility with numbers and build important addition and subtraction computation strategies. In science will begin to explore the needs of living things as we prepare for our trip to the Mill of Kintail Conservation Area, February 11th. Kindly return permission forms for this trip by Friday. This Wednesday is “Family Literacy Day.” We will celebrate here at school by reading with “buddies” in another class during our library time. Check out this link for ideas of things you can do as a family to promote and celebrate literacy:  http://abclifeliteracy.ca/family-literacy.Thank you for reminding your child to complete and return their January homework this week!

Grade Two Ms.  Moga

We had another busy and productive week in Grade 2. The students conducted a “Penny Slide” experiment in science. They glued different materials to the bottoms of pennies and measured how high they had to lift a cookie sheet to get the pennies to slide. After, we discussed the slope of the cookie sheet and thought about what effect the materials on the pennies had on their ability to slide.

In math, we will be wrapping up two-digit addition and subtraction. The students will be trying word problems where they have to decide which operation to use. Our next unit will be geometry.
In language, we will be refocusing on the reading comprehension strategy of asking questions, and wrapping up the good copies of the descriptive paragraphs.
Please return the permission form for our trip to The Mill of Kintail if you have not already done so.
Have a great week!

Mrs. Manzoli`s Stars……

Hard to believe that we are in the final week of January.  Where does the time go?

As we enter into this week we will be consolidating some of the learning that went on.

Homework was not handed out last week.  Instead the students will be assigned a project this week on the topic of being a ‘Good Digital Citizen’ and how to leave a positive digital footprint.  They will have the week to design how they will present the information to the class.

In Language, we continue at looking at descriptive writing using the hamburger model to write a paragraph.  Using adjectives to describe our nouns will be the focus.  In Reading, we focus on visualizing what we read in order to understand the main idea of the stories we read.  On Wednesday we mark Literacy Day and will be able to practice our reading abilities as we participate in a school-wide reading buddies.  Try to set aside some time to hear you children read to you 🙂 and check out  www.abclifeliteracy.ca  for further activities you can share at home.

In Math, we will move into our unit on measuring time, temperature and the value of money.  You can help in the learning with these sometimes difficult concepts by doing daily activities at home.  (Have your child tell you the time to the hour, half hour and quarter hour, watch the weather channel and record the weekly temperatures, count their coins in their piggy banks).

This week in the Primary Language Class, we will work on a new writing form called “procedural writing”.  The students were introduced to procedural writing last week when we created secret Valentine cards.  Procedural writing involves giving clear directions or steps on how to do something. Please note that the January homework calendar is due back on Wednesday, January 27, 2016. New February homework calendars arrive home next Monday. Please work with your child to complete these activities daily. The activities are short and require about 5 minutes to complete. Most activities are done orally and do not have a written component. In addition to the homework calendar activities, it is very beneficial to read to and with your child every night. Please note that our RAZ Kids account was removed because of a system error.  It is now reactivated and all students have access again.

Teacher Notes for the Week

Full Day Kindergarten News January 1822, 2016

Kindergarten Registration for the 2016-2017 school year takes place this week!!  Please share this news with any friends and neighbours wanting to register at St Anthony School!!

This will be a four-day week in Kindergarten.  There is a PD Day this Friday January 22, 2016.  The FDK 2 class enjoyed a morning of snowshoeing with Mrs. Rupnik’s PLC Class on Friday January 15th.  The students loved using our set of school snowshoes to walk around the schoolyard!  We were so happy they embraced this activity and plan to get FDK1 using the snowshoes this week!
We participated in many great learning centers this week!  We are always amazed to see what happens when we put out new learning materials for the students to discover.  They are very creative and love to use their imaginations!  Check out their self-portraits and some great pictures in our Kindergarten hallway!
We will continue to focus on our winter stories, “How Do You Know It’s Winter” , “Stranger in the Woods”, “Getting Ready” and “Snowball Soup” .  Students enjoy retelling stories in their own words, using the pictures to help them remember what happened in the text and following print from left and right.
Stay tuned for more great news for the FDK classes!  Winter Play Day, a visit from our local librarian and our first report cards all coming very soon!!

winter 010

Ms. Myers’ Class

The children really enjoyed exploring the story of The Mitten last week.  Everyone went home with their mitten story pieces last Friday, so hopefully they will have an opportunity to re-tell and share this well-loved winter folktale to someone at home!  In math we will continue our measurement study. The children are looking forward to comparing the heights of everyone in the class!  You can reinforce measuring concepts at home using everyday situations to compare and describe lengths and heights of objects. Ask questions such as “Will this box fit on the shelf?” “How can we put these books on the shelf in order of height?”  In reading we have been focusing on a decoding strategy called “Guess the Covered Word.” It encourages students to cross check initial letter sounds with what makes sense when they get “stuck” on a word. Ask your child to tell you about our “Guess the Covered Word” activity. This week the “Wonderful Ones” will be leading the Morning Announcements. If your child has been asked to say a prayer, please have them practice reading it aloud to you in preparation. Have a great week!

Grade 2 News- January 18- 22

Reminder: Friday, January 22, 2016– PD Day

We had a great week of learning last week. The students completed their science quiz on Movement and overall did quite well. They are ready to move on in the unit.

In Language, the students are working hard on their favourite toy descriptive writing paragraphs; we will continue to work on, and ideally finish, these this week.

In Math, we worked on different strategies to add two-digit numbers. This builds on the students learning from the place value unit. They used base-ten blocks, a 100’s chart, and finally practiced using standard written form. We will continue to work on this skill in math this week.

In Family Life, we are continuing our focus on living in a relationship and will discuss what love and caring can look like at home and school.

In art, we had a chance to play with some percussion instruments including maracas, bells, and cups used as drums. This week we will explore the other instrument families.

Finally, in gym we will be working on applying our ball manipulation skills to different basketball games.

Please return the permission form for our trip to The Mill of Kintail (February 11th) if you have not already done so.

I look forward to another great week of learning in grade 2!

Dear Community Activists,

We, at the Canadian Red Cross are committed to helping others.  Our organization is based on this idea.  We help in a variety of different ways from providing home care services and CPR, to sending money and supplies to countries that need it.  Just recently, our disaster management teams were in Newfoundland and Labrador assisting with the effects of Hurricane Igor.  Our volunteers in the Philippines continue to help with the aftermath of Typhoon Megi.   The Philippine Red Cross is rolling out its response after typhoon Megi battered the country with winds of more than 220kph and heavy rains. Emergency response teams and specialized volunteers have delivered supplies such as food and beddings to 2,000 families while assessment teams have been surveying the scale of the destruction.

These forces of nature cannot be prevented and they cause natural disasters that affect millions of individuals each year.  Because of this, we would like to call you to action to help your community!  We cannot predict how or when a natural disaster can happen. As of result, prepare your community’s access with your own disaster management team.  Design and create structures / bridges that can withstand these natural disasters.  You will need to do a design indicating the types of materials that will be needed, and then build the structure with materials representing the actual materials.

Your community needs you!

Sincerely yours,

Denis Chartrand

This upcoming week, we begin working on asking for help in our Social Language program. Through personal stories and role-playing, students will learn when and how to ask for help in the classroom. We will also continue to ask questions when reading and record our questions on post-it notes called thinkmarks (please see picture). Thinkmarks allow students to think about the story on a deeper level and promote better comprehension. Remember to keep helping your child with the homework calendar. When you support your children’s homework routine, you help them do better at school.

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

The Grade 4/5 Team enjoyed a wonderful story called “The Three Questions”.  The three questions were When is the best time to do things? Who is the most important one? and What is the right thing to do?

Ask your child the answer to these important questions that helped a young boy discover how he can be a good person.  We also took the following “WOW” words from our story: insecure, uncertain, priority, advance, drenching and injure.  Don’t be surprised if your child begins using these new words in their everyday conversations as their vocabulary continues to grow.

In Math, we will begin a unit on Multiplication and division.  We will create and solve multiplication problems using different strategies.  Your child will use a variety of calculation methods, such as estimation, mental math, modelling and diagrams, and calculators, as well as pencil and paper when solving problems. This will help your child develop flexibility in their thinking, which can lead to better recall of facts. The students should continue to practice their facts to 10 so that they can recall them quickly and be able to use them in their work and everyday life.

Many of the students presented their well rehearsed Book Talk.  They were well practiced and entertaining, which enticed others to want to read their book. We look forward to listening to the rest of the students present their book.

With the winter wonderland we are experiencing the students should continue to dress warmly so that they can enjoy their time spent outdoors.

The students are encouraged to continue to remain focussed and diligent in completing work on time and to the best of their ability.

A reminder that Friday is a PD day for teachers so there will be no school for students.

Have a wonderful week!

Teacher Notes for this week

Full Day Kindergarten News January 11-15, 2016

Our first week back to school in 2016 was a big success!  Our students enjoyed our new snow hills in the yard and settled back into routine very quickly!  Thank you for sending extra socks and mitts with your child.  Waterproof mitts are very helpful in keeping little hands warm and dry while playing in the snow!
We focused on numbers, recognizing numbers, estimating numbers, showing one-to-one correspondence and demonstrating how to make a number.  Students are enjoying the many hands-on activities to learn about these important math concepts.  Ask your child to show you by using dice or counting simple objects at home such as Cheerios and pointing out numbers in your neighbourhood!  We love numbers!
In preparation for our Epiphany Mass we discussed the importance of the bright star and the wise men that followed the star to a very special place.  We used our Nativity sets to act out the story and to truly understand the importance of the birth of Jesus.  Students took part in our Epiphany Mass at the church.  Our Rosary visit with Ms Lucy focused on the Year of Mercy and on Mary.  We love this time learning how to pray the rosary.
We will focus on winter stories and what happens first next, then and last in our stories.  We will focus on retelling a story to show our comprehension.  We will read Stranger in the Woods, Snow and Getting Ready this week!
We look forward to a great week of learning in FDK!
We love our Reading Buddies in the Grade4/5 class!

14

Ms. Myers Grade One

We had a great first week back together!  The “Wonderful Ones” seemed to have returned with confidence! They came up with some interesting New Year’s Resolutions – you can check out their ideas on our bulletin board in the hallway! Thanks to those students who prepared readings for our Epiphany Mass – all were very well done!  This week we will read the old Ukrainian folktale, The Mitten.  We will read different versions of this tale and practice re-telling the story. In math we will focus on measuring length. The children will use terms such as “longer”, “shorter”, and “taller” to describe objects and distances as well as use items such as paper clips and snap cubes to measure and compare lengths.  Mrs. Mullins, our reading volunteer, will return this week so everyone should have a Home Reading Book to bring home on Thursday. Have a great week everyone!

15

Ms Moga Grade Two Class

Welcome to January 2016! I hope everyone had a peaceful two weeks off. We had a productive week getting back into school mode and continuing with lots of learning. The past week culminated with a beautiful mass at St. Anthony’s Church to celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany.

This week, students are asked to bring in a toy or object from home that they can use for writing a descriptive paragraph in language. We’ve been focusing on describing what objects do, look like, smell like, taste like, feel like, sound like, and how they make us feel.

In reading, we are focusing on asking questions. The students know that good readers ask questions at the beginning, during reading, and after reading. We will continue to practice this skill and discover that sometimes the answers are not found in the text.

In math, we are wrapping up place value. This is an important concept to grasp before we move into addition and subtraction with two digit numbers. I encourage practicing at home by asking how many tens, or how many ones are in a number.

In science, we are continuing the unit on Movement. Your child should have brought home a paper to review for the quiz that will be on Thursday.

In art, we have begun a unit on music. We will continue to discuss the instrument families and begin to discuss beat and rhythm this week.

In Family Life, we are discussing families and living in a relationship. The students have been eager to share about the uniqueness of each of their families.

This week, we began a unit in Health; we are discussing the difference between prescription and non-prescription medication. In gym, we are beginning to work on our travelling skills; we have started dribbling and passing with basketballs.

Finally, please return the letter sent home on Friday indicating whether your child will be receiving his/her First Reconciliation and First Communion.

Your partner in education,

Ms. Moga

Mrs. Rupnik’s Class

While writing in our journals this week, we will revisit our writing goals we set early in September and make some adjustments if necessary. We will also focus on our new ‘thinkmark’ related to asking questions (for example: what, who, when, where, why, how). After reading a story, students will ask questions related to the text and record their questions. Please ensure you are working with your child to complete the homework activities daily as part of the nightly routines. I will resend the RAZ KIDS login information home this week. Look for it in the agenda. This week, we also welcome Shauna Chalifoux to our class. Please read her introductory note:

Hello, my name is Shauna Chalifoux! I am a speech-language pathology student at Dalhousie University, and I am honoured to be completing part of my final clinical placement at St. Anthony School. My hobbies include reading, painting, knitting, and hiking. I look forward to working with your child and the staff at St. Anthony School! Thanks, Shauna

Grade 3 /4 News for the week…

After what seemed a very long week last week the students have settled back into their school routines.  They were very excited that most of them had a new seating plan.  We ended our week with a beautiful Epiphany mass on Friday and the students did a wonderful job in their readings, we also had Christina and Tirza sing a solo during Communion, great job girls!

As we move forward into this week we will be looking at what is descriptive writing in language and read stories using descriptive vocabulary.   We will explore what adjectives are and how they help when describing something.  Last week we worked on contractions as part of our words of the week and will use them as part of our writing.

In math last week we had a chance to look at what “Data” is and how we collect information to create various kinds of graphs.  This week we will work on what makes a good survey questions to collect data and create graphs from our data.   We will also work through the modules in the mathletics website.

The Grade 3’s have begun their new unit in science “Forces and Movement” while the grade fours will be looking at “Structures and Mechanisms”.  We will be using Discovery Education to guide us through this unit.

Things to remember…….

  • Library on Monday
  • Pizza day on Friday
  • Homework due on Wednesday
  • Orkistra begins again this week

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

The Grade 4/5 team has returned from the holidays with a renewed spirit to continue with their strong work ethic and collaborative efforts.

We enjoyed reading the Epiphany story and celebrated the Epiphany mass with the school community. It  reminds us that we too want to follow the light and live our lives like Jesus.

We have begun Family Life, with our first unit Created and Loved by God. We will explore the Christian belief that we are made in God’s image, and that God knows and loves each one of us.  Because of this, we respect and value ourselves and others.

In Math, the students finished creating  their 2-D geometric house and described the shapes using attributes. The students will be given a test on Thursday to further demonstrate their understanding. The students can review by visiting Nelson Math on their Chromebooks.

In Language, we enjoyed a shared reading calledChendra’s Journal”.  We learned about one girl’s trip exploring the east coast of Canada.  Ask your child some of the interesting places and sites we learned about.  The students have begun writing a personal memoir about a meaningful event in their lives.  We look forward to sharing our stories.

Friday we begin our Book Talks.  Please have your child practice presenting their book talk so that they will be prepared to present it to the class.

Have a wonderful week!

 Mrs Colaiacovo’s class

Grade 5/6 students are settling well back into our routines. We are wrapping up the geometry strand in math with a unit test on Tuesday of this week. Students have been enjoying the Daily Five rotation for language arts as we establish the program and iron out the wrinkles. Your child should be finishing his/her novels and should be starting to practice his/her book talk presentations which will commence next Monday. Please take a few moments to listen to your child’s presentation and to offer feedback.
We enjoyed participating in the Epiphany Mass at Saint Anthony Church last Friday morning. The grade 5/6 class welcomes back Kimberly and Meghan from the Somerset West Community Health Centre for the Friends for Life program on Thursday this week during 3rd block. We are lucky to be able to benefit from this important program for the next 10 weeks. The girls’ badminton team will be attending their tournament on Wednesday, January 13 and the boys will go on January 20.
We have managed to profit from our Friday popcorn sales to raise funds for the year-end grade 6 trip. Thank you for your continued support for this initiative! Please note that the price of a bag of popcorn remains $1.00. Please also note that our next sale will take place on Thursday, January 21, due to the January 22 PD day.

Thank you for your continued support,

Full Day Kindergarten News for January 4-January 8, 2015

Welcome back everyone!  Happy New Year!  We hope you had a great Christmas holiday with your family!

We look forward to a great year in FDK in 2016!  We will welcome Mrs. Turner, our E.C.E. back to the FDK program as she returns from maternity leave.
The students had a great opportunity to thank Miss Dunn for all of her work with the students in the Kindergarten program.  They made a special video to let Miss Dunn know how much she was appreciated!
What a winter wonderland!  We will get to enjoy all the new fallen snow in our schoolyard during our recess time outside from 8:30-8:45, 11:35-12:15 and 2:40-2:55.  We spend about 70 minutes outside per day, please make sure your child is dressed warmly for the weather and extra mittens and socks in their bags are always a great idea!
We will have Ms Lucy visit on Wednesday for our Rosary Program and we will be preparing for our visit to St Anthony Church on Friday January 8th at 9:00am.  Everyone is welcome to join us for our Epiphany Mass.  We prepared our hearts for the coming of Jesus as students took a very active role in our three Advent liturgies in December by reading prayers, singing songs and listening to the gospel.  A special thank you to Par Par and Dawa for representing our classes for our Advent Outreach project.  They delivered many hand made cards to the patients of St Vincent’s Hospital, an amazing act of kindness that brought so much joy and happiness to others!  Thank you to all of our students for making beautiful Christmas cards.

Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday! This week we continue to celebrate the Christmas season as we explore the story of the Epiphany. We will read about how the Three Kings visited the Baby Jesus and will think about how we can spread the good news of the birth of Jesus, just as the Three Wise Men did. The Gr. 1’s are working with the Gr. 3 / 4 class to prepare our school Epiphany Mass. It will take place on Friday, January 8 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Anthony Church. You are welcome to join us!  If you child has been asked to prepare a reading for this Mass, please help them practice.  Look for a January newsletter and homework calendar in your child’s agenda on Monday.

The children will have an opportunity to share their holiday news in their journal writing this week. I look forward to reading their news! Have a great week!

Students should be preparing for their next book talk for language arts, which they will begin presenting on January 18. Our grade 6 confirmation preparation will continue as well.
