Pathways to French at the Ottawa Catholic School Board

Dear Parents/Guardians of students in Gr. 3,

In Kindergarten, we introduce students to French Immersion in a play based setting. Students spend 50% oftheir day in English and 50% of their day in French. The aim is to allow students to feel comfortable with the French language in a natural setting.

In Grades 1, 2 and 3, our Board offers a rich Extended French program (1/4 of the day is in French and 3⁄4of the day is in English). This is to ensure that students have a strong foundation in English (as their first language) and that they are ready for literacy and numeracy throughout the grades. It also provides enough FSL instruction to continue in the Immersion pathway as of Grade 4.

Your child is currently enrolled in the Extended French Program of 75 minutes per day (or 1⁄4 of the day). It is that time of year that we ask parents to select the FSL pathway that they feel would best meet their child’s needs in Grade 4.

As you may be aware, our School Board provides two French Second Language pathways in Grades 4 to 6. These are Extended French (1/4 day, the same as your child’s current program) or Immersion French (1/2 day). Both the Extended Pathway and the Immersion Pathways are programs of excellence and high expectations. Each program allows for students to excel in French Language acquisition to serve them at school and beyond.

Grade 3 parents complete the French program selection sheet and return it to the school by March 6, 2015.  This sheet will be found in the report card envelope.

Please click here to view a powerpoint presentation on FSL Pathways at the Ottawa Catholic School Board

For Parents/Guardians of Grade 6 students currently enrolled in the French Second Language Extended Program:

As your child has followed the French Second Language Extended Program Pathway in the junior grades, the Core French Second Language Pathway is the suggested next step at the intermediate level in Grade 7.  This is a program of excellence and high expectations. The program continues to promote the development of functional fluency in French.

At the secondary level, students following the Core Program Pathway continue to build French language acquisition, studying French at the Applied or Academic levels. Many Canadian post-secondary institutions also provide their students with Second Language learning opportunities to prepare our youth for the job market.

In preparation for the next school year, we ask that you please consider the Pathways to French chart on the reverse side. Please complete the French program selection sheet for your child and return it to your school by March 6th,  2015.

If you have any questions,  please contact the school and speak with your child’s teachers.

Thank you for your support and action on this necessary process to help us prepare for the appropriate French Second Language programming for your child.

Ms Myers Class Grade 1

Wednesday, February 18th is Ash Wednesday. This marks the beginning of the Lenten season. We will be focusing on how Lent is a time to pray, share, and love as Jesus taught. If you would like to help your child better understand this liturgical season and explore ways to journey through Lent as a family, resources can be found on the Loyola Press website: http://www.loyolapress.com/whats-with-the- ashes–.htm. It seems that this week is one of “beginnings” as many of the families in our community will celebrate Lunar New Year! As part of our language activities this week, we will read stories related to this tradition and make dragon puppets.

Ms Rupnik’s class (Primary Language)

Hope you enjoyed some family time this long weekend. Last week was very busy as we continued to focus on procedural writing.  The special surprise activity, ‘How to Make a Fruit Salad’ was enjoyed by all the students.  We then took the time to introduce Read & Write, a special app for Google Chrome that helps students with writing and reading tasks.  Please ask them about this program.  They all wrote a small procedural text about making fruit salad using Read & Write. This week we will finish with our last procedural task (how to get ready to play in the snow), using Read & Write.  Guest Readers come on Wednesday.   A big thank-you to you, all the parents, for checking and signing your child’s agenda and the All About My Day book daily.

Tracking a cohort - grade 6 school results

Tracking a cohort – grade 6 Board results

Tracking a cohort grade 6 - School results

Tracking a cohort grade 6 – School results

Continuing our series on EQAO – Tracking a cohort – Grade 6 our school compared to the OCSB Board.  Take a good look at these two charts.  In the areas of reading, writing and math, students at St. Anthony are compared with their fellow students across the school board.

The data is interesting – here are some points about St. Anthony and the school board:

Math 12% of St. Anthony students did not meet the standard in Grade 3 but met it in Grade 6

5% of OCSB students did not meet the standard in Grade 3 but met it in Grade 6

Writing  88% of St. Anthony students met the provincial standard in Grade 3 and Grade 6

74% of OCSB met the provincial standard in Grade 3 and Grade 6

Reading 67% of OCSB students met the provincial standard in Grade 3 and Grade 6;

18% of OCSB  did not meet the standard in Grade 3 but met it in Grade 6;

38% of St. Anthony students met the provincial standard in Grade 3 and Grade 6;

62% of St. Anthony Students did not meet the standard in Grade 3 but met it in Grade 6;

tracking a cohort - reading

These are amazing results!  in writing our students have made huge gains in reading (62%) better gains in math than the OCSB (12% to 5%)

and 88% of students met provincial standards in writing in grade 3 and 6 while 74% of OCSB students met the standard in grades 3 and 6.

One area of concern – in writing, 12% of our students made the standard in grade 3 but failed to make the standard in grade 6
