St. Anthony Connects – The week of December 12 – 16

Special note to parents

Please do not park in the bus loading zone on Booth – this is causing lots of trouble for our vans who drop off and pick students up at the end of the day.  We will be putting up pylons on Monday to block the area.  If this does not work we will have to ticket cars in this area.

Thank-you for your cooperation

Teacher Notes for this week

Kindergarten News for December 12-16, 2016

k1

There will be many opportunities to join the Kindergarten Groups this week at St Anthony School to take part in some fun adventures such as a field trip, an Advent liturgy, a neighbourhood walk to the mailbox to mail our Santa letters and Reading Buddies!

k2

What a great week!  There is much excitement as we wait in joyful hope during the Advent season.  We are singing songs, participating in class discussions and sharing our great ideas as we begin to understand The Christmas Story.  Our students are very engaged during our weekly Advent liturgies.  They sing “Stay Awake, Be Ready!”  and “Light the Advent Candle”.  They know it is a special time when we listen to the gospel and the prayers.  Please join us this week on Thursday December 15th, 2016 at 9:15 for our Third Week of Advent Liturgy in the gym.

k3
The Kinders attended our second Advent liturgy with the whole school on Thursday. This time some of the kinders got to participate by standing beside their older brother or sister as they read a prayer. Another student got to light the Advent candles.

k4

Monday we will visit Starr Gymnastics for the last time.  Our students absolutely loved this experience and we were so lucky to go three times!  A special thank you to all of our parent volunteers!  The bus will leave at 8:40-8:45 am.  Please hop on the bus with us if you can! We will return by 10:20 am.

Tuesday we will get our jingle bells and musical instruments out as we march through the neighbourhood singing Christmas songs along the way.  We will stop at the mailbox on Rochester Street to put our letters in the mail to Santa.  We can’t wait to hear back from Santa this year!  Please join us if you can on Tuesday at 10:00am for our Santa letter walk!

k5

Wednesday K1 has Reading Buddies with the Grade 4/5 class at 10:30 am.  We are reading lots of Christmas stories.  K2 visits the Learning Commons on Wednesday morning too!

On Friday we will say goodbye to Ms. Jasmine (ECE from Algonquin) and Ms. Henry (student teacher from Ottawa U). Our Kindergarten students were blessed to have such wonderful educators in training and as staff we were so fortunate to have these educators be a part of our Kindergarten Team.  We wish them continued success in their educational journey.  Ms Henry will be back in February 2017!

Thank you Ms. Jasmine and Ms. Henry!

Ms Myers’ grade one-two class

This week the children completed some amazing artwork in the style of Piet Mondrian, one of the founders of modern art. They used primary colours and simple lines to create versions of Mondrian’s “Composition in Red, Blue, and Yellow.” Come by our “gallery” in the hallway and take a look!

Week three of Advent is already upon us.  We have been focusing on a different part of the Christmas story each week.  The children continue to enjoy adding a piece to our Advent calendar each day and are experiencing the joy of giving each time they deliver a card to someone in our school community.  In the coming week we will read the story of the Legend of the Poinsettia. It is a Mexican folktale that emphasizes the importance of giving from the heart. Remember to ask your child about it!  In math we will continue to focus on collecting data. The children will have opportunities to generate questions for their classmates and practice using a tally mark system to organize the data they collect.  In reading we are working on a decoding strategy called “Guess the Covered Word.” It encourages students to cross check initial letter sounds with what makes sense when they get “stuck” on a word. Ask your child to tell you about our “Guess the Covered Word” activity. This week our class will be leading the Morning Announcements. If your child has been asked to say a prayer, please have them practice reading it aloud to you in preparation. Mrs. Mullins, our home reading volunteer, will return to the class this Wednesday. Please ensure your child returns their Home Reading book this week. It sounds like very cold weather is headed our way this week…please ensure your child comes to school warmly dressed and prepared for the brisk air!

Writing- The students are almost finished their descriptive reports on animals! Once, finished, the students will have a chance to present their reports to our class to share their learning.

moga

Reading- We began discussing visualizing last week! Many of the students realized they already use this strategy when reading. We will continue to read texts and practice describing the visualizations in our heads.

Math- We began our unit on addition and subtraction. This week we will investigate various strategies for adding (e.g. use doubles facts to find larger sums, bridge to 10 to solve addition problems).

Science- The grade 2s started the new unit on Movement. We brainstormed ways that many objects can move. We discovered that objects and people need a force (push or pull) in order to move. Next week, we will continue to discuss movement, as well as position.

Have a great week!
Ms. Moga

Mrs. Rupnik’s Primary Language Class

We have been talking about how preparing for Christmas is much more than buying and receiving gifts. It’s thinking about how we can be more like Christ and then doing something about it.  To help prepare for this festive season, the children have worked on various Advent activities from participating in Advent liturgies, learning songs like Away in the Manger and donating toiletries for St. Luke’s Table.

rupnik-1

This week, we will write letters and cards to special friends of St. Anthony Catholic School (for example: Father Felix, our van drivers, etc.). We will also complete a sequencing activity about the Nativity story. Then we will retell the story using our own words.

We have completed the descriptive writing assignment called “The Best Part of Me”. Have a look at some samples. They are so creative!

rupnik-2

Please return the Retelling Journal to school on Monday, December 12, 2016.

grade-3

December is flying by! The grade 3 students had another busy week working and preparing for the birth of our Saviour. Elfie has been very mischievous, hiding all over our classroom, but she helps us to remember to be kind to each other especially during the season of Advent. I am also very proud of the work that the grade 3’s have done in their French class with Mr. Girard. Their play was unbelievable and I know they worked really hard on it.
Coming up this week:
Math – This week we will be looking at the different types of graphs and how we can use them to demonstrate information.
Language – We will be exploring how there are “pebble” words and “rock” words and how we can use them to describe Christmas events!
Religion – This week marks the third week of Advent so we will continue on our exploration of the Advent season.
Reminders for the week:
1. Popcorn day on Thursday
2. Third Advent Liturgy on Thursday at 9 am

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

The third week of Advent is upon us with all its joy and anticipation.  The students have been summarizing an article on the significance of this important time of the year and all the symbols that go with this liturgical season where we wait to celebrate the birth of Jesus.  Ask your child all the interesting information we have discovered through our readings.

t1

The students will visit Starr Gymnastics once again on Monday morning.  They are to be reminded to dress comfortably to be able to participate in all the fun physical activities they will be engaged in.

In Language, the students are enjoying our Book Study “Hana’s Suitcase”.  Ask your child about the events that unfolded in Hana’s life during World War II.  The students will also be writing an explanatory story about how people celebrate Christmas in another country.  It will be interesting to learn about how the customs differ from how people celebrate this holiday in Canada.

In math, we will begin our next strand, Data Management.  Students will learn various ways to collect and organize data.  They will make pictographs and bar graphs.  The goals for your child are to learn to gather and organize information appropriately; to read and interpret tables, charts, and graphs correctly; and to understand and be able to explain how people use data.

Our next science unit is Rocks and Minerals.  The students will learn about the different types of rocks and minerals and how they are important to our Earth.

The homework duotang will be sent home on  Monday and must be returned on Friday completed with care and attention to detail.

The students continue to bring in items in support of St. Luke’s table. Thank you!!!  The Grade 4/5 team certainly is an example of “Good News”!

Have a great week!

Together Everyone Achieves More!

Mrs. Colaiacovo’s Grade five-six class

Whoa! We are keeping a frantic pace, but enjoying every minute of learning and fun in grade 5/6!

col

The students presented their December book talks this week and I enjoyed their creativity and their insights. I am building a reading list for my Christmas holidays, based on their recommendations! We were lucky to have Mr. Moleski (a Board technology expert) visit the class on Wednesday morning to work with the students on a mini research project for  Advent on their ChromeBooks.

We began the data management strand in math and students have been revisiting the concepts of mean, median, mode and range; constructing bar graphs and pictographs; and collecting and interpreting data. Next week we will continue to examine and graph data as it relates directly to us here at Saint Anthony.

The grade 6 students have been working hard on the Earth and Space strand of science. Ask your child to tell you their mnemonic device they are using to remember the order of the planets in our galaxy! The students will have a mid-unit quiz on Tuesday to check in on what they have learned thus far.

We have also been working on the special grade 6 rendition of a popular Christmas song and invite parents to attend our big premiere at the monthly school assembly on Wednesday, December 21.

We enjoyed the second Advent celebration as we gathered as a school community this past Thursday and I hope that parents will join us next Thursday, December 15 at 9:15 a.m for our next liturgy.

On Monday during second block we will be attending our second and final Starr Gymnastics session with the grade 4/5 class. On Wednesday morning, we will be walking to St. Luke’s Table to assist in preparations for their Christmas meal. Please continue to support this community organization by sending in personal care items. Help us fill our Advent train!

Please continue to check in with your child to ensure that he/she is staying up to date with work assignments.

Green Club News November and December 2016

green

The Green Club continues to do work around the school to promote a green way of life. We are working on energy conservation and minimizing waste. Students continue to lead monthly assemblies for   Wastefree Wednesdays. We also welcomed Roberta LeBlanc, an Ontario Dairy Educator, to St. Anthony Catholic School. All the students learned how we get our milk and milk products from the ‘farm to the table’. They even made and tasted their own butter. Late November, our post-Halloween Pumpkin bird feeders attracted some birds for us. Thanks Ms. Myers for capturing these birds on your camera! We also had our first Waste Audit for the school year. Students worked with Green Club staff members to gather garbage, recycling, and compost materials for a 24 period. We then weighed the clear plastic garbage bags and filled in the worksheets for our Ontario EcoSchools application. Finally the students assessed the data and communicated results to the whole school community during an assembly. They even created a Google Slide presentation with reminders and reduction strategies. Keep on going!

hatch-1

hatch-2

Hatch prepares students (ages 7- 17) for the 21st century by teaching how to write computer code using JavaScript in a fun and engaging way. Hatch has built a proprietary educational platform that is designed around the principles of self-paced and mastery-based learning to encourage children to challenge themselves and build their own digital portfolio from their library of 600  projects including Minecraft, Star Wars, Games, Art, Design Apps and much more!

Hatch after school and lunch time programs are 8 to 12 weeks in length, and your preference of start dates & times are available for the winter of 2017. After school programs cost $21 per hour per student, and lunchtime programs are pro-rated at $16 for a 45-minute session.

In order for students to obtain as much hands-on coaching as possible, we strive to provide 1 instructor for each 6 students. As such, we can run a program for as few as 6 students, although most schools have over 15 students participate. Our programs are HST exempt due to a positive ruling from the government who believes in the educational value of Hatch programs.

Registration for January classes starts soon – we will be running a lunch-time program.  Subsidies are available

St. Anthony Connects – special announcement

Hello everyone

This is a special blog post to let you all know that as of December 23, I will be retiring from the school board and St. Anthony.  The new principal is Ms. Cindy Aldrich-Braddon.  I have spoken with Ms. Aldrich-Braddon, and she is very exciting to be coming to our school.

I visited all the classes today and told the kids about this change.

I have truly enjoyed my time at St. Anthony School, it has certainly been the highlight of my 31 years of teaching.  There is no better way to go out than this.  I love what I do here at St. Anthony and I have learned so much.  This is a wonderful community to work in and we have amazing staff and students!

In the new year, I will be training to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro.  This has been a dream of mine and I will be raising money for Rec LINK, a group that does wonderful work for our community.  You can follow the climb to Kilimanjaro here.  I will try to document the climb so this can be shared with the students.

Thank-you for all your wonderful support over the past two and a half years, it has been a completely joyful experience!

Kindergarten News for November 21-25, 2016

kp-1

Get ready for the snow!  The first snowfall is always a magical day in Kindergarten!   We love to watch out the window as the snow blankets our schoolyard and then we can not wait to get outside!  We plan to spend time outdoors enjoying the snow!  Please come prepared with warm boots, snow pants, waterproof mitts, hat and a warm coat.  We do have a clothing room upstairs with warm clothes if needed!
In French, we will begin to look at the parts of the body. Some basic body parts in French are: la tête (head), les cheveux (hair), les yeux (eyes), la bouche (mouth), les bras (arms), les mains (hands), les pieds (feet), and les jambes (legs).  Je mange …. (I eat) will be the sentence structure of the week.
kp2
We planted fall bulbs (hyacinths) in both classes and we will review the life cycle of a plant as we watch the plants grow.

Madame S. and Mrs. Turner will be taking the other Kindergarten class (K2) to Starr Gymnastics Monday morning. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately in stretchy pants and a lose shirt as they will be jumping and moving on and through various gym equipment.
We will also have Dairy Presentations for both groups, K1 on Thursday and K2 on Friday of this week.  We look forward to learning about dairy farming from a real dairy farmer!  Please feel free to join us for this presentation at 1:15-2:00.
We will be reading more stories about Hibernation as we get ready for our Hibernation Day next week…..stay tuned as we prepare our bear dens, with leaves, and various materials to make a nice cozy den for a long winter’s nap!
In Math, we will start a new strategy called “Number Talks”.  We had a visit from our Math Consultant who kicked off the first successful lesson and we look forward to talking about numbers everyday in French and in English.
K1 first field trip to Starr Gymnastics!
Grade one-two news Ms Myers
grade-1-2
This week we continue our math unit on patterning. The “Wonderful Ones” will have opportunities to create, extend, represent, and record a variety of patterns and see how patterns help us make predictions and solve problems. We will discuss “attributes” of a pattern (things such as colour, shape, size, and design) and the “pattern core” (the part of the pattern that repeats).  In reading we will work on developing our understanding of a story by focusing on specific vocabulary.  At the end of the week, ask your child to tell you about our “WOW” words – those new words they have learned from our story Beware of the Bears!  In visual art we are exploring the element of colour. The children loved experimenting with the primary colours (yellow, blue, and red), to create the secondary colours (purple, orange, and green). We will continue to explore how artists use colour in their work. This Thursday we will participate in a presentation given by the Dairy Farmers of Ontario. We will learn about the different people and processes involved with getting milk from a cow to the supermarket. Monday is our second and final trip to Starr Gymnastics. Please ensure your child is dressed comfortably for the day.  A reminder that November homework is due this week. Have a great week!
Grade Two-Three Ms Moga

Art- We will discuss and begin to create a piece using different drawing techniques (e.g. foreground and background).

Have a great week!

Ms. Moga

Grade 3 Ms Solymar

grade-3

We had another great week in the Grade 3 classroom. It started off with a wonderful pizza party from our Friends for Life. In Math, we experienced our first number talks and in Science we made our very own paper windmills out of leaf rubbings from our school yard. In Gym we practiced how to bump, volley, and serve a volleyball and in Family Life we discussed the different feelings that we have and how we cannot be controlled by our feelings.
Coming up this week:
Math – We will continue to work on patterns, especially creating our own number patterns that grow or shrink.
Language – We are going to keep practicing our paragraph writing and look at using a ‘hamburger’ outline to help us.
Science – What are the different types of forces? I think Bill Nye might be able to help us figure it out!
Family Life – I think it is important for us to continue looking at how our feelings can control us and impact others. We will be playing another fun game that discusses the different types of emotions.
Art – With snow on its way this weekend, we will start looking at Christmas and winter crafts!
Reminders for this week:
1. Library books due on Wednesday
2. Scholastic book orders due on Friday, November 25
I am looking forward to the week ahead! See you all on Monday!

Mrs. Rupnik’s Class

This week in the Primary Language Class, we will continue our Social Language activities with Room 14, focusing on the theme of caring and sharing.

We will also begin to work on descriptive writing. This form of writing focuses on using details (adjectives) to describe events, people, or objects.   We will explore different oral language activities first like the game ‘Guess What’, which involves students secretly describing an object, as descriptively as possible, and then have other students try to guess the object.

What fun we had last Monday morning at our first Starr Gymnastic session. Students tried different equipment and explored different gymnastic movements while physically learning basic linguistic concepts like backwards/forwards, before/after, through/ between, behind, etc. We will return on Monday, November 21 for more fun and learning. Reminder: Students are encouraged to dress in comfortable clothing.

On Thursday, November 24 and Friday November 25, we welcome Roberta LeBlanc, a dairy educator, to St. Anthony Catholic School. She will deliver interactive presentations to our students related to dairy farming, milk’s role in healthy living, etc.  Ask your child about the presentation.

We had another fun week in grades 3, 4, 5, and 6!

Grade 3: Students loved singing and dancing to the “aller” (to go) and “avoir” (to have) verb songs in class in order to introduce them to how to conjugate these two verbs. We also created our own “assiettes des verbes” (verb plates) beginning with the verb “aller” as a craft project that students enjoyed making. These plates were also used as a tool for students to test each other’s knowledge of the verb conjugations in teams of 2 as part of in class and online digital verb games. Bon travail à tous et chacun!

Next week:

French Language: Students will work on in class activities related to the conjugation of the verb

aller (to go) and avoir (to have) and begin placing them within sentence structures.

Grade 4/5: Students loved singing the catchy French hymn’L’oiseau et l’enfant’. This song  follows a child whose desire to change the world is inspired by nature and imagination through the flight of a bird she sees in the sky.

We also created our own “assiettes des verbes” (verb plates) beginning with the verb “aller” as a craft project that students enjoyed. These plates later became a tool for students to test each other’s knowledge of the verb. Teams of 2-4 students participated in games to help recall their knowledge of how to use the verb in various sentence structures. For social studies, students began to conduct their own online research using suggested web links in class to describe daily life of “les civilisations anciennes” (ancient civilisations); in order to compare life in a past civilization to modern Canadian society. Super travail!

Next Week:

French Language: Students will work on in class activities related to the conjugation of the verb aller (to go) and avoir (to have) and apply them both within various sentence structures.

Social Studies: Students will continue their research on the subject of daily life in an ancient civilization, and finish writing and editing their findings to publish in their digital portfolios.

chris-2

Music: Students will continue practicing the lyrics of’L’oiseau et l’enfant’. Grade 5/6: Students loved singing the catchy French hymn ‘L’oiseau et l’enfant’. This song is a follows a child whose desire to change the world is inspired by nature and imagination through the flight of a bird she sees in the sky.

For social studies, students began to collect pictures and descriptions about the different ethnic, religious, and cultural communities found in Canada in order to create both a digital image and word collage of Canada’s diversity. Magnifique travail!

Next week:

French Language: Students will work on in class activities related to the conjugation of the verb aller (to go) and avoir (to have) and apply them both within various sentence structures.

Social Studies: Students will continue their research about Canada’s diverse communities, and finish creating their digital collages to publish in their digital portfolios.

Music: Students will continue practicing the lyrics of ‘oiseau et l’enfant’

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

The last full week of November! Wow! Let’s see how long this spring like weather can keep us company! Gotta love it!

The junior division enjoyed a great time at the Ottawa 67s hockey game! They were joined by 16,000 other students in cheering our team to victory against the Peterborough Pete’s hockey team. They also received some healthy tips as they watched the energy level the players needed to maintain as they competed at such a high level of sport.

img_2178-jpg-google-drive-clipular

In math, the students have begun exploring patterns.  They have been creating growing, shrinking and repeating patterns.  They will be challenged to look for patterns in more difficult inquiries while organizing their thinking in T-charts. Students should be looking for patterns in their environment so that they realize it is not limited to working with patterns in the classroom.

In language, we have added “Work on Writing” to our daily 5 centres.  We have been focussing on proofreading their written work so that ideas are clear and editing to catch errors in grammar and spelling.  We continue to use the read and write app on our chromebooks to help with this focus. We continue with our guided reading groups.  Students are encouraged to be active readers and ask themselves questions while reading to help them understand the text.

Students should be practicing for their booktalk and using the rubric included in their homework book to guide them in preparing for their presentation starting the week of November the 28th.

The student’s work folders will be coming home on Monday with work and assessments the students have completed over the past month.  Please review the work with your child, sign and return it to school.

We look forward to having Mr. Moleski back in our class on Wednesday to work on the skill of summarizing using the Read and Write app on the chromebooks.

Have a great week!

Mrs Colaiacovo’s Grade five-six news

Once again, grade 5/6  enjoyed a very busy and fun-filled week and we find ourselves almost at the end of November. How quickly time passes! During the past week the students worked to complete their Remembrance Day stories, wrote postcards to veterans and began journal entries about the Ottawa 67’s amazing victory over the Peterborough Petes that we were lucky enough to witness! Our new language focus in the coming week will be the December book talk assignment, for which the students will receive the outline on Monday.

The students continue to learn about patterning from Mr. Bannan and will be moving into algebra this coming week. The biodiversity unit will wrap early in the week and we will begin the Space unit in grade 6 science.

The boys volleyball team worked as a cohesive unit at Thursday’s tournament and proudly came up with a second place finish! Our next sports tournaments will be in the new year, so we are afforded a bit of a break for now.

We are looking forward to another great week of learning!

FDK News for June 27, 28 and 29

It is hard to believe that we are coming to the end of an amazing year in Kindergarten.  We would like to take this opportunity to thank our parent community for the support and commitment to making your child’s educational journey a positive experience.  We have enjoyed getting to know all of you and your children.  We have watched as your children have grown and blossomed into amazing individuals and who have made a huge contribution and impact at St Anthony Catholic School.  They arrive each day ready to learn and embrace all learning opportunities.  We have created lasting memories this year and we are so grateful for the opportunity to teach an amazing group of students!

We would also like to thank Mrs. Heagle for all of her hard work and dedication to the students.  We were truly blessed to have Mrs. Heagle on the FDK Team.  She arrived each day with a smile and a laugh and created an environment where each child felt a strong sense of belonging.  Her happiness and laughter was felt throughout the entire room.  She brings so much joy to all and this is evident as soon as you walk into the classroom.  Mrs. Heagle’s contribution to our school community will be felt for many years to come, from her contagious laughter throughout the class, to her amazing organizational skills, to creating a learning environment that fosters positive peer interactions, to bringing so many things for students such as crafts, toys and gifts, to bringing in plants for our school garden!!  We wish you continued success at your new school.

Reminder:  Walking Field Trip to Plant Bath Sprinkler Park!!  Tuesday June 28th, 2016.  Departure at 8:45 am, returning to St Anthony by 11:00 am.  Thank you to all of our volunteers!  Please apply sunscreen and wear bathing suits under clothes to school!  Please bring clothes to change into and a towel!  Sunhat and Sunscreen and a water bottle are also needed!

Looking forward to a wonderful last three days with our students!  Have a safe and happy summer!  See you in September!

Ms. Myers Grade One Class

Last Thursday, the “Wonderful Ones” bade farewell to the lovely little chicks!  It was certainly a fun and learning filled experience for everyone!  We were amazed at how much they grew in the short time we cared for them, with many chicks beginning to grow their feathers!  Farmers Tammy and Rene were pleased that the children responded so well, showing great care, concern, and respect for the little lives that were entrusted to the class.  Though it was sad to see them go, we all have to admit that our classroom now smells a whole lot better since the chicks departed…! In the few days we have left together we will spend some time going through the work we have accumulated throughout the year. On Monday, the children will bring home much of the work they have done this year. I encourage you to look through it with your child and discuss the gains they have made since September. Report cards will go home on Tuesday. The children are looking forward to “hosting” the upcoming grade 1 students and sharing with them some of the things that they can look forward to in September!  Thank you for all your support this year. I hope all families will enjoy a restful summer holiday.

Mrs. Rupnik’s Class

This week in the Primary Language Class, we will “pop” our way to the end of the school year. We will count the days left with an activity inside each balloon (for example: Monday– make a thank-you for the van drivers and celebrating summer birthdays, Tuesday– make a Tic-Tac-Toe game with mosaic tiles and enjoying freezies, Wednesday– games and free time!)

Thank-you for all your support and assistance this school year. As parents, you play a vital part in helping children meet success. Over the summer vacation, I strongly encourage you to read to your child daily and practise writing by using the word wall words that we have been working on all year. I have included a list of recommended activities on our last class newsletter.  Doing just one or two of these activities each day over the summer break will help to keep your child working and learning. I wish everyone a happy summer- may it be full of sunshine and lots of fun memories.

June News from the Green Club

It is with much joy and excitement that we announce our new GOLD status for our Ontario EcoSchools Certification. “Ontario EcoSchools is an environmental education and certification program for grades K-12 that helps school communities develop both ecological literacy and environmental practices to become environmentally responsible citizens and reduce the ecological footprint of schools.” Gold level status indicates that St. Anthony Catholic School has taken a comprehensive approach to implementing the EcoSchools program and has achieved significant results in each section of certification. Congratulations to all the boys and girls and staff members at St. Anthony Catholic School!!!! Here is our summary report.

Ontario EcoSchools Certification Application – Application Summary Report 2015-16

St. Anthony Feedback: St. Anthony, it was a pleasure to read through your application and learn about the many ways your EcoTeam is working together to make big changes at your school. Your Bright Light award motivates students to continue to improve their Energy Conservation efforts and is a great way to celebrate successes. You should be very proud of your weekly litterless lunches and your composting program, these are excellent Waste Minimization initiatives. Please be sure to include student names on your Walkabout Worksheets for full recognition in 2.10 and 3.10. Your Asphalt to Oasis project is an amazing School Ground Greening project, congratulations on receiving the AVIVA grant! We can’t wait to see how this project progresses. Please note, projects in the planning stages are not eligible for section 4.5. In Curriculum, your submissions show that you have a dedicated team of teachers who embed environmental learning into their teaching. Your Walk to School campaign is a great example of an Environmental Stewardship campaign that goes above and beyond while engaging the entire school community in environmental action and learning. The Electricity Safety presentation is excellent for increasing awareness of an environmental issue. Combine this rich learning experience with a whole school community environmental action for full recognition in 6.1. Congratulations on a fantastic year and keep up the great work St. Anthony!

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

Last blog of the school year…unbelievable!!!!

The students had a wonderful time exploring Maker Space on Friday.  A wonderful program that has been led by our Librarian Technician, Mrs. Iverson.  The students were able to try all the wonderful kits and created lots of things using gears, circuits, netbooks, knex, magnets, playdoh…. Hopefully many more students will get involved with this wonderful program next year right here at St. Anthony Catholic.

The students have been sent home with all their work to share with you and to review all they have learned and completed throughout the year.  It’s amazing all they have done and the growth we have seen over the year. Super!!!

We will begin the week with a picnic at Plouffe Park, located next to Plant Bath Recreation Centre.  We will walk over with the grade 5/6 class and enjoy the morning together. Your child was sent home a note telling about the morning we will spend together playing games, having lunch and maybe getting a little wet in the splash pad to cool off.  Students should come wearing sunscreen, a hat and comfortable shoes to be able to participate in the activities.  They must also bring a water bottle and their lunch. Looking forward to a fun morning!

It has been such a pleasure working with your child this school year.  The grade 4/5 team proved to be a hard working, determined group of students that worked together for the success of all.  I wish you all a wonderful summer spent with family and friends. I look forward to seeing everyone in the fall with a renewed energy.

Thank you for your continued support throughout the whole school year!

Have a wonderful summer!

FDK News for the week of June 20-24
Congratulations to all of our Senior Kindergarten class!  They participated in a beautiful celebration in the gym.  They sang songs, said a prayer, received their little diplomas, watched a slideshow and ate cake and watermelon!  Most importantly, the students celebrated with their families and they were so proud of themselves and the loved ones who came to show their support!  Thank you to all of our SK families!  Also a special thank you to Mr. McGuire, Ms. Ekick, Mrs. Rupnik, Mrs. Troccoli, EDP staff, the FDK team, our grade 2 helpers and the JK students for your support!

We had a special visit from a local paramedic named Brian.  He came to share some great safety tips and to explain the vital role that paramedics play in our community.  Students were very attentive and asked great questions!

We hope you enjoy the Father’s Day gift and you get to spend some quality family time together!  We have started to send many materials home, like blankets, extra clothes, student work, etc.  Please keep all items at home, now that we are approaching the end of the year, these items are no longer needed.
Thank you for returning all forms for our year-end field trip to the Sprinkler Park at Plant Bath on Tuesday June 28th, 2016.  We look forward to celebrating the end of the year with you!

Grade One Mrs. Myers Class

The “Wonderful Ones” welcomed 34 new “classmates” this week!!  Our chicks arrived!! It was all fast and furious!  They are certainly the “talk of the town!” We were fascinated as we watched them break out of their shell! We’ve enjoyed holding them, watching them, and most of all, listening to them!!  The children have been learning how to be good “hosts” as all the classes have come through to see our little “darlings!” It has been a great opportunity to share our learning (the grade ones feel they are “eggsperts!!”) – and also to share the joy of witnessing God’s amazing creation!  The chicks will remain for a few days this week and then we will bid farewell. Even though the chicks have taken over our classroom, we will do our best to keep up with all our other learning!  In math this week we will explore probability – predicting what might happen based on our experience. We will use words such as “possible,” “ sometimes,” “always,” and “never,” to describe things we see and do. On Monday, Jennifer Johnson from Rosemount Library will be visiting to tell us about the wonderful programming that the Ottawa Public Library provides through the summer months. We look forward to seeing families at our school B.B.Q. taking place on Thursday evening after school.  Have a great week!

Important Dates: Thursday, June 23, 2016— Awards Ceremony
Thursday, June 23, 2016–  Family BBQ (4:30- 7pm)

We had a great week in grade 2 last week! Welcome to the home stretch! Summer has arrived and it has brought the heat! Please remember to dress your child appropriately and send a reusable water bottle if possible.

Language- we are continuing with synthesizing while reading. The students are now beginning to share more of their thoughts as they grow and change during our read-alouds. In writing, we will discuss different styles of poetry and write some of our own poems.

Math- we are working on fact families (related addition and subtraction facts up to 18). Knowing fact families can help to reinforce the basic facts, as well as, teach the concept of equality.

Science- we are continuing our unit on Air and Water in the Environment. This week we will focus on environmental problems and solutions and what we can/should be doing to help.

Drama- each group’s presentation of “Moose’s Loose Tooth” have turned out great! We will practice some more this week, including with costumes. The students showed great interest in sharing the play with the rest of the school- performances will be scheduled for next week.

Mrs. Rupnik’s Class

It was wonderful to see so many family members at our performances of “The Little Red Hen” last week.  The children did a wonderful job memorizing their lines and performing their roles in front of different audiences. Bravo, boys and girls!  I can’t believe fast the school year is winding down.  Although it is getting a little harder to keep the children engaged in learning all day long, I can always count on keeping them hooked during our read-alouds.  They love listening to, discussing, and connecting with the characters in our stories. The “Last Day Blues” is the perfect way to end our year of read-alouds. In this story, the students are worried that Mrs. Hartwell is going to spend her entire summer missing them, but Mrs. Hartwell is secretly just as thrilled about summer as they are. For writing this week, we will work on summer vocabulary and finish our ‘bucket list’ for the summer.

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

Happy Father’s Day  to all the dad’s! Hope you enjoyed a wonderful weekend!

The last full week of the school year is full of activity.  On Tuesday many of the junior students will be participating in the board Track and Field meet. Wednesday is our year end school mass where all are welcome to join us in celebrating a wonderful school year. Thursday will be our awards assembly where many students will be recognized for their hard work throughout the year.

In language arts, we are using many of the comprehension strategies we have used throughout the year ie. predicting, analyzing, visualizing… as we enjoy read alouds through our text talk resource. We will also continue to look at different types of media and discuss the strategies used to attract their chosen audience.  The students will also be working on their Digital Passport – an online resource that allows the students to interact with different activities to teach the students how to be good digital citizens.  Very important lessons in this day and age!

In math, we have completed our 3-D city.  We have very creative architects in our grade 4/5 class.  We will be reviewing the concepts we have learned over the year with a focus on basic facts and multiplying and dividing larger numbers.

Looking forward to an exciting week!

Thank you for your continued support!

Have a wonderful week!

Thank you!! A great community effort!

ACF winners digital banner-600x300_EN

Hello everyone
First, please let me apologize for taking so long to thank-you for all your wonderful support during the Aviva Campaign.  We did remarkably well and won the competition in our area resulting in a cash prize of $100,000.00
This would not have been possible if were not for the great work you all did over the days of the campaign.  Whether you voted every day, passed our information on to your networks or put up one of our posters, all of your individual efforts allowed us to succeed.
Starting in the new year, we will begin to plan on how this infusion of financial resources will be translated into a new and wonderful yard for our community.
I will keep you updated through my blog so that you get to see the fruits of your very generous actions.
This has been a great achievement and you all get to share in this great accomplishment.  From the bottom of my heart, thank-you!

Teacher Notes for this week

Ms Myers Grade 1 class

This week a March newsletter and homework calendar will be going home in your child’s agenda. Please check to see if it’s there!  Just a reminder that both these items can be found on our school website under the teacher section.  Thanks to all parents who have returned their child’s report card envelope!  If you still have it at home, please send it in with your child to be used again in June.  We continue our work with 2-D shapes, linking them to objects we see in our environment. Take a “shape walk” with your child at home and see how many different things you can find!

This week’s word wall words are: BEST, COAT, KIND, YOUR, ZOO. In Math, we are moving onto subtraction with borrowing for grade 2, and subtraction facts from 20 for grade 1. In Language, we will learn about narratives, by reading stories and writing our own. We will continue to learn about structures in science and how they support an object. I will be away Thursday this week and will have a supply teacher in that day. Homework calendars will be sent home this week in the student’s agenda bags. Please make sure they are trying to complete their homework each night and have them look their work over when they are done. We will have a special visit this week from Julie Astier, my aunt and local author of LIbby Redribbon. This will happen Friday afternoon during last block. The kids are very excited about this! I hope everyone has a blessed week!

Ms Rupnik’s Language Class

This week in our Primary Language Class, we will work on a new ‘thinkmark’ dedicated to determining the important part of stories we read.  Finding the important part is a reading strategy that we use to distinguish between what information in a story is most important versus what information is interesting but not necessary for understanding.  March homework calendars arrive home on Monday, March 2, 2015.

Bell Time and Walk Zone Review – FINAL

In 2012, based on recommendations from the Ministry’s Efficiency and Effectiveness Review, OSTA began its transformation project to harmonize walk zone maps and re-align bell times throughout its system. The first step was to create new policies governing how these steps were to be undertaken, including the consultation and approval process for each part of the project. The result was the Bell Time Management Policy T19, an amendment to the Transportation Services T14 procedure for standardized hazard criteria and assessment methodology and the Consultation Policy G14. This past year, OSTA has conducted consultation with its internal and external stakeholders to get feedback on proposed bell time changes and new walk zone maps. Twenty-five consultation sessions were held at schools throughout the city to collect feedback from April to June 2014. An electronic survey was also made available on OSTA’s website along with information regarding OSTA’s transformation.OSTA took the feedback it received from school communities and revised its recommendations.

Individual concerns regarding safety were carefully evaluated and/or re-assessed, and numerous changes were made to walk zones as a result. In addition, some schools were removed from the bell time review due to various circumstances unique to those school communities. On November 10 2014, the OSTA Board of Directors approved bell time changes of 10 minutes and All changes to be implemented for September 2015 under. On January 27 2015, both the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board and the Ottawa Catholic School Board approved bell time changes of over 10 minutes. This was the final step in the approval process.

Please go to www.ottawaschoolbus.ca/policies/transformation for more information regarding this project.

A hard copy of the 800m (kindergarten) and/or 1.6km (grades 1-8) walk zone map(s) are available at the school for viewing.

After reviewing the feedback from the Public Consultation Sessions held last Spring, OSTA has identified areas where there are legitimate traffic safety hazards that present a barrier to children walking to school.  Listed below are the FINAL walk zone maps for each school, highlighted in red, which use the same distance measurement for both school boards, and which include a standardized set of walking hazards. A summary of the decision-making process can be found in blue, under selected school communities.

Further information about any changes made for the upcoming 2015-2016 school year will be sent to your child’s school months prior to the changes. Please keep an eye on our Transformation Project webpage for more updates.

 Teacher Notes for the week

Ms Myers:

We had a fabulous trip to the Mill of Kintail – perfect snowshoeing conditions! Many thanks to all theparents who were able to assist us. The grade ones now feel they are snowshoe “experts!”

Monday marks the 100th day of school! We will celebrate with a variety of math and language activitiesconnected to 100. As Valentine’s day approaches we will be sharing stories of friendship and renewing our commitment to our “Class Promise.” For those who wish to participate, we will exchange Valentines on Friday, February 13th. A list of classmates can be found on the back of the February newsletter sent home last week. The “Wonderful Ones” will be leading the Morning Announcements this week. If your child has been asked to say a prayer, please have them practice reading it aloud to you in preparation.

Ms Hubert:

This will be another busy and exciting week.  In Language Arts we will continue with our Procedural Writing, EQAO preparation and Literature Circles.  In Science we will continue to learn about flight and build on our knowledge of kites, learned last week. In Mathematics, we will be finishing Measurement shortly and beginning with Data Management and Probability.  On Friday morning we will be hosting a bake sale to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
Mr. Cook:
Homework calendars will be sent home Monday in the students agenda bags. Please make sure to try and work on the homework each night with your child. The activities should not take long to complete. After they finish, reading is always a nice thing they can do! Ask your child questions about the book and get them to tell you their favorite part! This week we will be celebrating Valentne’s Day. The students will be decorating paper bags and will trade Valentine’s cards on Friday. There are 18 friends in our class (10 girls, 8 boys), in case you wanted to know when purchasing Valentine’s cards. We will do a procedural writing activity after we make the bags.

We are going to be starting a new science unit on Materials, Objects, and Everyday Structures which will lead us into Movement. In Math, we will be reviewing some number sense and numeration concepts. The kids had a blast snowshoeing last week at the Mill of Kintail! Thanks to all the parents who volunteered with us that day! Let’s hope that this week will be just as blessed!

P.S. Report Cards go home Thursday.

This week in the Primary Language Class, we will continue our work on procedural writing. Last week, we completed two shared procedural writing activities together (how to eat an Oreo cookie and how to make a Valentine card).  This week we will move onto independent student practice. They will write or say how to get ready to play in the snow.  We will also read ‘There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Rose’ for Valentine’s Day and complete a sequencing activity.
