FDK news for April 25-29

Congratulations to FDK 1!  They are the winners of the Earth Day Challenge!  They designed an amazing castle made with all recycled materials!   Way to go FDK!

We had a great Earth Day!  We are sprouting seeds in Ziploc bags that are taped to our window so they get lots of sunshine.  We cleaned up our schoolyard on Friday!  We picked up many pieces of garbage on the yard which helped make our Earth a better place.  We also watched a little Earth Day movie with our friends from the PLC Class.
Get ready for another eventful week!  We will have three more Gymnastics sessions with Bubbles from Starr Gymnastics on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  We will also have a walking field trip to The Fire Station on Preston Street on Monday.  A special thank you to all of our parent volunteers and for returning all of the permission forms!  We look forward to meeting the firefighters in our community!

Ms. Myers’ Grade one Class:

We are gearing up for another learning filled week in Grade 1! On Tuesday Ms. Bev Wilcox, our school public health nurse, will visit us. Ms. Wilcox will talk about active transportation and safety. This is a particularly important topic now that walking and biking weather is upon us! In math we will begin working with fractions with an emphasis on equal parts of a whole. In language we will work on narrative writing, focusing on the essential parts of a story – beginning, middle, and end. To get us started with our writing efforts, the children are invited to bring a small stuffed animal to enjoy a “sleepover” at the school. We will write a class story about the adventures of our stuffed animals!  The stuffed animals can come to school on Wednesday and will return home on Thursday. The “Wonderful Ones” have been following the progress of their bean seeds with great interest and the seeds are sprouting with enthusiasm…turns out the “Wonderful Ones” have green thumbs!   A reminder that April homework is due this Wednesday. Enjoy your week!

grade 1

Ms. Moga’s Class

Another busy week full of learning has come and gone in grade 2! Last week, the students displayed some of the best collaboration I’ve seen all year in planning, constructing, and decorating our cardboard robot for The Earth Day Challenge. Thank you to those who were able to provide some recycled boxes. There was some stiff competition, including two other robots, and unfortunately we were not the winners. However, it was a great experience and learning opportunity!

Curriculum Highlights:

Math: we have wrapped up our unit on fractions. In grade 2, the emphasis is on using concrete materials and not so much standard notation. I encourage parents to continue practicing fractions at home with real-life examples (e.g. with food- equally sharing a pizza, cutting up fruit, splitting a chocolate bar). We are moving onto mass and capacity.  Grade 2’s are expected to estimate, measure, and record the capacity and/or mass of an object, using a variety of non-standard units (e.g.,“I used the pan balance and found that the stapler has the same mass as my pencil case.”). They will also be expected to compare and order a collection of objects by mass and/or capacity, using non-standard units (e.g.,“The coffee can holds more sand than the soup can, but the same amount as the small pail.”).

Language: in writing, we will wrap up persuasive letters. The students will each write one more persuasive letter this week.

In reading, we will wrap up making inferences. Students should be able to share inferences they make during a read-aloud or during independent reading.

Gym: STARR Gymnastics will be back again  Wednesday through Friday this week. We have approximately 1 hour on each of those days to learn some more gymnastics skills.

Finally, I will be away Wednesday to Friday at the Connect 2016 Conference. I will be attending presentations on various topics regarding technology in education. Ms. Solymar, a regular substitute who is familiar to the grade 2s and our classroom routine, will be covering for me.

Have a fantastic week!

Mrs. Rupnik’s Class

This week in the Primary Language Class, we will continue with our narrative writing unit.  We will use wordless picture books as a foundation for creative writing. Oftentimes students struggle with ideas and topics for narrative writing. Wordless picture books offers a visual platform for students, providing them with pictures to assist in developing story lines, setting development, character descriptions, sequencing of events, and much more.  The April homework calendars are due on Wednesday, April 27. Please remember that the Ottawa Catholic School Board provides students with access to digital educational resources to use at home. To access the student portal page, please navigate to St. Anthony Catholic School website page (http://san.ocsb.ca/) and access the student portal page from there.

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

Our week will begin with the oral presentations of our biographies.  The students have been working very hard researching and writing about a significant person in our world.  They finally get to share all the knowledge they have gained with their classmates.  They will also have a chance to present the digital poster they have created on google slides.  All very exciting!!

In math we have started exploring Fractions and Decimals.  The students will learn how to use them to describe wholes and parts, and to describe and create sets.  Your child can look around for things that come in sets.  Food is also a great medium to discuss fractions.  They can discuss food that is served in fraction pieces.  The students can visit mathK8.nelson.com to review concepts taught in class.

Our class worked cooperatively to create a totem pole using recycled materials for our school Earth Day challenge.  It was fun to see what teamwork can create!

In Religion we will be learning about the Doors of Mercy.  We will brainstorm how we can help make a positive impact in the lives of people who are less fortunate than ourselves or who are experiencing a difficult time in their lives.

In Family Life we have begun Unit 2, Living in Relationships. We have been discussing how important  our relationships within our family and with friends are. We have also been learning that these relationships are not always easy.  They require hard work and commitment, however, well worth the effort!

Thank you for ongoing support.

Have a wonderful week!

In oral:

We will review… J’aime, Je n’aime pas, J’adore, J’aime jouer, Je suis

during the first week.

In Social Studies, we are studying the benefits of tourism and how it

links us to the rest of the world. Students have chosen one city or park

and are creating a pamphlet which they will present next week.

We are also multiculturism and Canada. We are:

• assessing contributions to Canadian identity made by various

groups and by various features of Canadian communities and

regions.

• using the social studies inquiry process to investigate different

perspectives on the historical and/or contemporary experience of

two or more distinct communities in Canada.

• demonstrating an understanding of significant experiences of and

major changes and aspects of life in, various historical and

contemporary communities in Canada.

5th Grade Science (English)

In Science, we will complete the school year with Understanding Earth

and Space Systems. We will start with forms of energy and begin

Renewable and Non-Renewable sources of energy. The kids completed a

workshop on Wednesday on Renewable forms of energy. They build a

wind turbine and measured the energy it produced. We will study the

data from our measurements this week.

For a fifth straight year, Ottawa Public Health has partnered with sports retailers across Ottawa to bring residents a discount on helmets. Helmets prevent serious brain and head injuries by absorbing the force from a fall or hit to the head. Helmets are recommended for activities like skateboarding, rollerblading, biking, sledding, skating, skiing and snowboarding. In Ontario, it is mandatory for anyone under the age of 18 to wear a certified helmet while riding a bicycle (Highway Traffic Act).

The Retailer Helmet Discount Weekend is May 14 and 15, 2016.

FDK News for April 18-22

Spring is here finally!  We had a great week, featuring three excellent sessions with Starr Gymnastics instructor Bubbles!  The students loved the trampoline, balancing beams, bars, mats and amazing stations that were all set up in the gym!  Bubbles will return next week!
Thank you for returning the signed permission form for our visit to the Preston Street Fire Station #11.  We look forward to this field trip on Monday April 25th at 8:45 am!!
We will focus on Earth Day this week by making a structure made out of recyclable materials for the Earth Day Challenge.  Students are welcome to bring in any recyclable items they want to add to our structure!  We will find out many different ways we can help to make the Earth be a better place!  Enjoy the sunshine!  The FDK Team!

K1

Ms. Myers’ Grade One Class:

Our tissue paper flowers seem to have encouraged spring to come after all! The improved weather gave us an opportunity to test out our pinwheels!  We discovered that the wind is a great source of energy!!  Mrs. Mullins, our faithful home reading volunteer, assisted us in planting our scarlet runner bean seeds last week. We look forward to charting the changes we observe as they grow. This week we celebrate Earth Day by participating in our yard clean-up on Friday, April 22.  The “Wonderful Ones” worked hard to build a very creative structure using all the recycled materials sent into school. Thank you for your contributions. We are excited about our submission for the Earth Day challenge – and really hope we win the prize of an extra 15-minute recess!  As we enjoy the change in weather, please continue to check the forecast and ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather….extra socks can come in handy! Have a great week!

Ms. Moga’s Grade 2 class

It looks like spring is here! The students had a great experience with STARR Gymnastics this week. They enjoyed all the stations, which allowed them to run, jump, cartwheel, walk on stilts, and balance.

In Language, students began planning their persuasive letters on a topic of their choice. This week, we will write a letter as a class before students move onto their rough draft. In reading, we continue to read interesting texts that make us think deeply and make inferences.

In Math, we looked at fractions of a whole. This week, we will continue with fractions: students will be learning to regroup fractional parts into wholes, using concrete materials (e.g., combine nine fourths to form two wholes and one-fourth).

In Science, we will pick up our unit on Solids, Liquids, and Gases. We will conduct an experiment to see what factors can change water (a liquid) into a solid, and gas. We will conduct a second experiment to see what happens when a solid is heated.

In Health, we will be discussing standing up for ourselves. We will read the story “Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon” and write about some things that make us special.

Finally, Friday is Earth Day! Each class has been challenged to build a structure out of cardboard. Please send in 1-2 cardboard boxes (e.g. shoe box, toilet paper roll, empty tissue box etc) to help us make our creation!

Have a great week!

Mrs. Rupnik’s Class

We will introduce narrative writing this week in the Primary Language Class. Narrative writing gives students the opportunity to be creative and tell/write a story. We will begin this unit by looking at different stories and identifying components of a good narrative (for example: characters, settings, problems, sequence of events, solutions). Take the time this week to tell a story or two to your child about a moment or event that means a lot to you.  To mark International Earth Day (April 22), we will participate in the school’s annual “Spring Cleaning the Capital” event and continue working on our class sculpture made out of recycled items.

earth week

Happy Earth Week!  I hope everyone had a chance to enjoy the wonderful sunshine this weekend as we look forward to Earth Week.  Please encourage your children to explore all the wonders of our beautiful earth.  We will be discussing and participating in various activities around earth day which we celebrate on Friday April 22nd. The students worked hard on Friday with the grade 5 / 6

Class creating their structure with recycled material.  They will be completing their project to be ready for our school wide challenge that takes place on Friday.  We will also be participating in a Discovery Education live streaming event called “ A Deep Dive into the World’s Coral Reefs”. The students will learn a little about biodiversity and explore our ever-changing marine ecosystem.

This week we will be looking at inferring in language and how this strategy helps the reader better understand the text by digging deeper into what the author is writing.  We will be using a mentor text called “Fly away Home” by Eve Bunting.

The students will also be having their spelling quiz on Friday.  As we wrap up our words for this year our focus will be on reviewing some of those difficult words given this year.  In writing we continue with procedural writing.  The students have been practicing this writing form in their daily journal writing.  On Thursday we continue working with Mr. Moleski on summarizing an article on Nutrition and learn how to highlight the main points in a text using their google docs and read and write application.

You can view the great  work the students have been working on by logging into their OSCB account.

In math we continue to practice our multiplication facts up to 7.  This week will explore basic division and look at how multiplication plays a role in this.

Reminders:

  • Book report due tomorrow
  • Library book due tomorrow
  • Pizza day Friday

Have a great week!

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

It seems Spring has finally sprung!!!  I hope everyone enjoyed the wonderful weekend weather. The St. Anthony Students enjoyed being active with Star Gymnastics last week! The fun physical activity continues next week.  Ask your child what new moves they learned and what new ways they can move their bodies.

The grade 4/5 students have been working hard on their biographies in preparation for their oral presentations next Monday.  They have also been given the task to create a Digital Poster about their chosen person.  The poster must include a well-written paragraph that highlights the key information and interesting facts they have learned during their biography research.

The students work folder will be going home Monday with some of the work and test they have completed during our math unit on Multiplication and Division.  Students should share this work with you and make any corrections before returning the folder and work to school.  Students must continue to practice these important skills regularly.

We will be observing Earth Week as we create a structure using recycled material.  Please send in toilet paper rolls to be used in the creation of our structure.

The students’ homework this week will be to practice their oral biography presentation.  Please have them share their presentation with you prior to having to present to the class.  It is also a good idea for the students to practice in front of the mirror. The rubric for the oral presentation has been sent to each student where they can easily access it on their Chromebooks.  The students will also be responsible for completing the tasks in Mathletics under Multiplication and Division.  I will assign the online test early next week as another assessment of their learning in this strand.

Thank you for ongoing support.

Have a wonderful week!

Together Everyone Achieves More

Ms. Colaiacovo’s grade 5/6 class

Students in the grade 5/6 passed another busy week, which included special guest visits and wonderfully energetic activities!

We were very lucky to have Ottawa RedBlacks quarterback Henry Burris visiting Saint Anthony School on Monday, April 11 to speak to the grades three to six students about goal-setting and achieving dreams. Mr. Burris also informed the students about the All-Star Weekend event that he is coordinating with the Big Brothers and Sisters Ottawa Chapter, which will take place on Sunday, May 13. Students were given information to register on-line or by telephone for this special day. Spaces are limited, so hopefully the students who are interested have already registered.
Mr. “Bubbles” from Starr Gymnastics was in this week as well to work with all students. By all accounts, it was a resounding success and the students look forward to his return for three more days of gymnastics instruction during the last week of April.
Mr. Moleski returned to the grade 5/6 class to assist us in developing even more computer technology skills. Each of the students is currently researching a Catholic Saint in order to create a biography and a digital poster of “their” saint. He will return on Wednesdays for the next two weeks.
The junior girls basketball team strongly represented our school at the Board tournament on Thursday. Congratulations ladies! The boys’ tournament will take place on Thursday, April 21 at St. George School. Please feel free to come and cheer us on!
……And through all of this excitement, we manage to cover some important curriculum! Students demonstrated their knowledge of multiplying decimals and we have begun working on long division (3 by 1 digit for the grade 5’s, and 2 by 4 digit for the grade 6’s). Work continues on the persuasive writing and any work that is not completed in class will be required homework this coming week. There will be a health test on Thursday for my afternoon grade 5/6 class. Students will be provided with a review of our addictions unit and will be expected to study for this test. We will wrap up the Electricity strand in science this week with a workshop on Wednesday afternoon with a special guest presenter.
Please remember that it is absolutely essential that students attend school on time and regularly to give them the best chance to succeed. Thank you for your continued support of your child’s learning.

Teacher notes for the week of April 11 – 15

FDK News for April 11-15

Let’s hope for a week of Spring weather to melt away all the snow!  We are still searching for signs of Spring, which was a bit tricky last week after all of the new snow!   Thank you for sending warm clothes, snow pants, warm mitts and hats as we wait for the weather to warm up! We enjoyed our Easter Mass on Friday and we listened very attentively to all of the readers, Father Felix and our wonderful songs.  Some of our FDK students participated in the mass by offering the gifts and walking in our opening procession.  Our FDK students are always amazed at the beauty of St Anthony Church and how special they feel to be part of the community.
This is a short week of learning.  PD Day on Friday April 15, 2016.  We will have three gymnastics sessions this week, starting on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday led by qualified instructors from Starr Gymnastics.  Please dress your child in comfortable clothing and running shoes.  Have a great week!  The FDK Team!

Ms Myers’ Grade One Class

Our “Scientists in the Schools” workshop was a great success!  Thank you to the parents who volunteered their time to help facilitate our learning for the afternoon.  We will wrap up our unit on energy this week by planting scarlet runner bean seeds. This will give us an opportunity to observe, first hand, how the sun is our main source of energy. We will also try out the pin-wheels the children constructed….whenever the weather cooperates!!  As Earth Day approaches (April 22nd), we will focus on the importance of conserving energy in an effort to care for the earth. We are currently collecting materials for our school-wide “Earth Day” challenge – building a sculpture from recyclable materials. Our school’s “Green Team” will judge each class sculpture on Earth Day. In math, we continue our learning about money concepts. In language, we will focus on how punctuation marks are like “traffic lights” for readers and writers – giving us clues when to stop, sound excited, take a pause, or know when a question is being asked.  As you read with your child each night, draw attention to these written “traffic lights” to increase your child’s awareness of punctuation. A reminder that this Friday, April 15,  is a PD day. There is no school for students on this day. The “Wonderful Ones” are attempting to “encourage” spring by creating tissue paper flowers with spring messages…let’s hope it works! Have a good week!

grade 1

Ms. Moga’s Grade Two News

Last week, the Grade 2’s demonstrated the values of “I Care” throughout the week and therefore our class won the St. Anthony Superstars of the Week Award! Good work Grade 2’s!

We have a busy week ahead in grade 2. Along with patiently awaiting Spring’s arrival, here are a few things to remember:

April 12-14: Starr Gymnastics

April 14: Papa Jack Popcorn

April 15: PD Day (no school)

Homework: congratulations grade 2’s, we have now learned all the word wall words! The writing part of the homework for the rest of the year will be a review of all the words. You will continue to receive 1-2 sheets for math as well. If you are looking for more practice at home, I encourage students to complete 1 reading response a week. I will include a new copy of that paper at the front of each students’ homework book.

In Language, we will continue making inferences when reading. In writing, we will continue with persuasive writing. We brainstormed a list of topics we may want to write a persuasive letter about. This week we will write a class letter together and read texts to help further understanding of this writing form.

In Math, we will continue with fractions. In grade 2, students are required to understand which fractions is bigger (e.g. one-half of a square or one-fourth of a square); regroup fractional parts into wholes; and to compare fractions using concrete materials (e.g., use fraction pieces to show that three-fourths are bigger than one-half, but smaller than one whole). We will continue to use hands-on activities, iPads (on Mathletics), and whole-group discussion to deepen our understanding of these concepts.

Have a fantastic week!

In our Social Language program this week, we will role-play taking part in discussions appropriately (i.e., making eye contact, taking conversational turns, adding to what has already been said, etc.). You may want to practise this skill at home too. The children will also continue to create their very own pic collage on our class ipads with personal photographs and phrases (i.e., interests/hobbies, best school memories, accomplishments, goals, friendships, etc.). The collages will then be uploaded to the individual student e-portfolios. Please remember that St. Anthony Catholic School is closed this Friday, April 15for PD day.

This week in the Grade 3 / 4 class….

We ended our week last week with a beautiful Easter Mass on Friday.  The students did a fabulous job listening to the prayers and singing the song we have been learning over the past few weeks.  Well done boys and girls!!

This week the students look forward to another short week due to Fridays PD day.

As we look at this week’s activities we have some interesting visitors visiting our school.

Beginning with Monday, we have the opportunity to meet the startup quarterback from our Ottawa Redblacks Henry Burris who will come to speak to the students about a wonderful opportunity for them to participate in a football camp running for boys and girls ages 8 to 14.  We look forward to his presentation.  Starr Gymnastics is coming to St. Anthony’s on Tuesday.  The students will be learning various moves and jumps to promote daily physical activity.

Our learning this week….

In Language this week we begin looking at the elements of procedural writing and will be creating some examples of this type of writing.

The grade 3 students will also be looking at some EQAO writing questions and be able to use what they know in their practice booklets. EQAO dates are as follows:  May 25, 26, 27 and 31 June 1 and 2. A reminder that children are expected to be at school on these days.  Any missed days the students will need to complete their test upon their return to school.

Children were assigned a book report last week. They should be completing their reading in order to complete their reports by April the 15th.

In Mathematics we have begun with multiplication and have started practising our 2 and 3 times tables. It is very important that the students continue practicing this concept at home.  The goal for this week is to look at various strategies to remember our facts.  Reminder that students should be accessing their mathletics and prodigy accounts to further their practice in these skills.

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

The freshly fallen snow did not dampen our spirits as the St. Anthony School  Community celebrated a beautiful Easter Mass at St. Anthony Church this past Friday. The Easter season continues as we bask in the joys of this wonderful time of year.

In Math, we spent the week reviewing multiplication and division to make sure the students have mastered these very important skills. The students will be formally tested this coming Tuesday.

Students should continue to practice their math facts regularly to aid in all areas of the math curriculum.

The students were given plenty of class time to work on the outline for the book report they are completing on a biography.  The rough outline should be completed and now they need to organize their information in preparation for their oral book talk. They must be ready to present their book report by April 25th. There will also be a media component to the project where they will be creating a digital poster.

We were again fortunate to have Mr. Moleski, a technology specialist from the board, visit our classroom this past Wednesday.   He has been helping the students use the resources available on their Chromebooks, especially the Read and Write application.  He worked on the research tool available to help the students with their biography research. This coming Wednesday he will visit to help with the media component of their biography project. Ask your child to share all the interesting information they have learned about his/her chosen person.

A reminder that there is a PD day on Friday so there will be no school for the students.

Have a wonderful week!

Ms. Colaiacovo’s Grade 5/6 class:

The grade 5/6 class welcomed Mr. Moleski back this past Wednesday to further investigate ways in which we can put our class technology to its best use. The students have begun researching and developing arguments to defend their opinions on recent developments at the provincial and federal governments levels. This persuasive writing activity will continue into the coming week and I expect that we will hear some insightful and informed opinions from the students.

We continue our work on multiplication of whole numbers and will begin multiplying decimal numbers as well, before looking more closely at long division strategies.

Grade 6 students worked with Miss Parmiss to construct open and closed circuits during science lessons. This week, we will investigate ways in which electrical energy is produced and used, and will begin to examine ways to conserve electrical energy.

The school community celebrated a beautiful Easter mass together on Friday at St. Anthony’s Church and then reconvened in the evening to enjoy the screening of “Inside Out” in the gym, put on by the parent council. Many thanks to the student volunteers (Justin, Michael, Rachel, Anarissa, Dorian and Joshua) who returned to sell popcorn and drinks to the hungry movie-goers. We will sell Papa Jack popcorn again on Thursday, April 14 at lunch time in a continued effort to raise funds for the grade 6 graduation trip. Many thanks for your continued support towards this effort.

Miss Parmiss has taken her leave from us, for now. She is returning to classes at the University of Ottawa for a couple of weeks and will come back to us when she has finished there. We will look forward to her return!
Tomorrow, we will have a special visit from Ottawa Redblacks quarterback Henry Burris to speak to the students about a football camp that he is involved with. We are excited to welcome Mr. Burris to our school community!

Students are reminded to continue to dress for the (crazy!!!!) erratic weather conditions that we have been experiencing…..hopefully, Mother Nature will lighten up on us very soon! Parents and students are also reminded of the importance of attending school regularly and being on time. As we enter this very important final stretch of the school year, there is a lot of valuable information and curriculum to cover. Thanks for your support in this area as well.

Teacher Notes for the upcoming week

FDK News for the upcoming week

April is here!  We had a great time on April Fool’s Day.  Ask your child about some of the fun tricks the teachers played on Friday.  We walked through our neighbourhood in search of our bear cave.  We were going to wake up our hibernating bears however when we finally reached the cave we were all surprised to find out that the bears were gone!!  The FDK students searched everywhere in the school yard!  When we arrived back in class we found all of our bears in the classroom!  We had lots of laughs!
We have many events this week, a rosary visit by Ms. Lucy on Wednesday, along with Dental Screening by our dental hygienist.  On Friday we will celebrate our Easter Mass at 9:00am at St Anthony Church, please join us!  It is also Pizza Day this Friday!  All families are invited at 4:30 pm for our Movie Night!!  We will be showing Inside Out on a big screen in the gym!  Come in your pajamas!
We continue to discuss the changing seasons and look for signs of Spring, we will read many books about Spring and have many opportunities to get outside and explore.  We are focusing on Measurement in Math and students are beginning to use many different non-standard measuring devices to measure length such as hands, feet, books and string.  We are using measurement terms like shorter and longer.  We will prepare for our Easter Mass by completing our Alleluia crosses and discussing what the Easter season brings to us!
Have a great week!  The FDK Team!

Ms. Myers Grade One Class:

Easter continues! The children enjoyed a special “egg hunt” where they had to read the clues the Easter Bunny left for each of them in order to find their egg!  On Friday, April 8th, we will attend our school Easter Mass. A representative from the Shepherd’s of Good Hope will pick up our Lenten food drive donations at that time. Thanks to all of you who showed such generosity!  The children had a great time investigating mini-circuits with our school “Little Bits” kits. This week we look forward to our visit from the Scientists in Schools program. Wendy Decker, our scientist, will guide us through five learning centers where the students will explore different aspects of energy in our lives. April newsletters and homework calendars went home on April 1st. As mentioned in the newsletter, our class word wall is full!  The children will no longer be bringing home 5 words each Monday. We will work with our existing words, focusing on how they can help us read and spell new words. In math, we will finish up our work on telling time to the hour and half hour and move on to exploring coins and their value. To reinforce money concepts at home, provide your child with opportunities to count the change in your wallet, or perhaps a piggy bank…real-life experiences are so helpful!!  The “Wonderful Ones” will be leading the Morning Announcements this week. If your child has been asked to say a prayer, please have them practice reading it aloud to you in preparation. Have a great week!

Grade 1 this week

Ms. Moga’s Grade Two Class:

Welcome April! Hopefully warmer days are headed our way; however, in the meantime please ensure your child is dressed accordingly for outside.

In Math, we will continue to discuss area and perimeter. We will do some more hands-on activities to help us grasp these two concepts.

In Language, we are shifting our focus to inferring (when readers think about and search the text, and sometimes use personal knowledge to construct meaning beyond what is literally stated). We will also begin a unit on persuasive writing.

In Science, we will examine solids that dissolve in water and those that don’t. We will also investigate the three states of water and what conditions make it change states.

In gym, we continue to build our fitness through running games. We will also begin some gymnastics stations (e.g. rolling, jumping and landing in different ways).

I continue to share our learning via Twitter. You can follow me @MogaOttawa to see the grade 2 class in action!

grade 2 2

Mrs. Rupnik’s Primary Language Class

Through phonics and spelling lessons (for example: rhymes, chants, word patterns, songs, etc.), the children will be introduced to five new words that will be added to our word wall this week.  In order to read and write independently, children must learn to automatically recognize and spell high-frequency words that occur in almost everything they read and write.  Help your child cut out the five new word wall cards and place them in his/her zip-lock bag provided.  Practise saying the words aloud with your child for a few minutes each evening and encourage him/her to print them out neatly in the word wall homework notebook.  Then, if time permits, try a bonus activity or two with your child.  (The bonus activity sheet is stapled on the inside cover of the word wall homework notebook.)  On Friday, the children will be assessed on the new word wall words (oral and spelling tests).

Learning goals:

Religion and Family Life

We are focusing our Religion lessons with the Events leading up to 50 days of Easter and celebrating New Life.

Language

In reading we will begin learning how determining important ideas and inferring helps us in becoming a better reader.  We practice by knowing the main ideas of a text and what the author considers important.  In writing we are beginning to look at procedural texts and working on the elements of what good writing looks like.

A big focus for the next two months will be preparing for our EQAO testing that takes place at the end of May.  You can support by reviewing the best practices when answering multiple choice questions and writing responses to comprehension questions from what they read.

Mathematics

We will begin on working on multiplication and division.  We also continue to practice daily our number sense through mad minutes and problem-solving questions.  Please review the basic addition, subtraction and multiplication facts regularly at home.

Science

The grade 3 will begin looking at structures and mechanism and the grade 4 are learning about rocks and minerals with Mr. Chartrand.

Homework :    Homework continues to provide students with extra practice for the concepts that are covered in class.  It also involves practice for the grade 3 EQAO testing.  Please take the time to look and review homework with your children. In order to reduce paper consumption homework will continue to be in a monthly calendar format.

Agendas:  Please continue to check your child’s agenda for important information and notes.  Have your child show you their end of the week learning goals at the end of each week.

Thank you for your continued support in your child’s Education .

Easter 1

Happy Spring!!!!!! Happy Easter!!!!!

Hello Parents,

Is it April already?  Wow, time sure flies when you’re having fun!  Here is the latest news from our Grade 4/5 class.

Easter 2

Math

We will be concluding our formal unit on multiplication & division. The goal has been for students to estimate and calculate the product of two-digit numbers and the quotient of two and three-digit numbers divided by one-digit numbers.  These skills will help your child to solve two-step word problems.  Talk to your child about situations in which you use multiplication and division in your daily life and when you might use mental computations, pencil and paper, or a calculator to find the answer.  Your child may solve questions differently from you.  It is important that your child recognizes that there are several ways of solving the same question.  Students will solve problems involving whole numbers, and describe and explain the variety of strategies used. Your child should continue to practice multiplication and division regularly to help strengthen these concepts and to allow them to apply them confidently when needed in all areas of the curriculum.

Our next focus in math is fractions.  I encourage your children to practice using fractions in real life situations (ie. sharing a pizza or chocolate bar, baking or when eating parts of a fruit).  The more your child uses fractions and the language related to it the more comfortable they will feel using it in their everyday lives. We will continue to incorporate the Inquiry based method in mathematics. The students will be presented with open ended problems to solve using their prior knowledge and available materials to come up with solutions.

You may visit mathK8.nelson.com and follow the links to Nelson Mathematics 4 or 5, for more suggestions to help your child learn and practice the concepts that we are working with in class.
Easter 3

Language Arts:

In Language Arts the students successfully completed their procedural writing. They are proudly hanging in the junior hall for all to learn “How to…”.  During the month of April the students book report will include reading a biography about a famous person of their choice.  They will orally present their information to the class, as well as create a digital poster of their chosen person.  We look forward to learning about a variety of significant people that have made a difference in our world. Our comprehension strategy focus will be predicting.  This requires the reader to anticipate, think ahead, and hypothesize about what might happen, based on personal prior knowledge and clues the author provides. Our writing focus will by narrative.  We will read several Folk Tales and Pourquoi Tales before the students will use their creative minds to write their own Pourquoi tales.  The creative juices will be flowing in April!

Religion/ Family Life

We had a thoughtful journey throughout Lent exploring the events and bible readings of Jesus’ sacrifice.  We took the time for self-reflection so that we were truly prepared for Easter.  We now bask in the joyous events of his resurrection.

In Family Life we will explore the second theme “Living in Relationship.”  God created us to live in relationship with others and to respond to each other with love.  Living in relationship begins in the family, the setting in which people first learn about love.  As children grow up, friendship becomes more and more important to them.  In this theme we will be exploring both important relationships – family and friendship.

Easter 33

Important Dates:

April 8th – 9:00 am –  Easter Mass at St. Anthony’s Church

April 15th – PD Day – No school for the students

Thank you for your continued support in helping your child take responsibility for his/her learning through attentive listening, strong organizational skills, and task completion.  We also appreciate the healthy snacks and lunches you have been sending to school with your child so that he/she has the proper nourishment to meet the needs of a busy school day.

Easter 4

Sincerely,

Mrs. S. Troccoli

Ms. Colaiacovo’s Grade 5/6 News

The grade 5/6 class has sprung into the new season with energy and enthusiasm! We congratulate the nine students who received the Sacrament of Confirmation from Archbishop Prendergast at St. Anthony parish on Saturday, April the 2nd! The students modelled confidence and maturity as they celebrated this very special milestone in their faith journey.

Work in mathematics continues to focus on solving problems using the operations of multiplication and division. Our grade 6 students continue learning about electricity with Miss Parmiss, our student teacher. We continue to work on different “fix-up” strategies to strengthen pieces of writing in language arts, in anticipation, especially, of the forthcoming EQAO testing for the grade 6 students. Our religion focus has been the Lenten season and we will continue to examine the wonder of Jesus’ resurrection during this Easter season. The grade 5/6 students have been learning about the use and misuse and the effects of alcohol and drugs during health lessons and this strand will continue through the month of April.
Our junior division students enjoyed a month of intermural basketball competition and many of the students will continue to practice to represent the school at the Board tournaments later this month.
We will bid a fond farewell to Miss Parmiss, as her practicum assignment winds to an end this week. We hope that she will be able to come back and continue working with students again, and we wish her well on her next year in the Bachelor of Education program and her future endeavours!
The bi-weekly Papa Jack fundraiser for the grade six year-end trip continues to be a success. We thank all parents in the school community for your continued support.
