Ms Myers class

We had a spectacular time at the Summer Solstice Festival!  Thanks so much to all our volunteers who came out to give us a hand!  The Pow-Wow dances were amazing!  This week we will wrap things up by taking a look at all the things we have accomplished this year in Grade 1. Report cards will go home with your child on Wednesday and our final day together will be Thursday, June 25. Friday is a P.D. for all students. I’d like to wish all the “Wonderful Ones” and their families a restful and fun-filled summer!  Thank you for all your support this year. School resumes on Tuesday, September 8, 2015!!

Mrs. Rupnik’s Primary Language Class:

It was wonderful to see so many family members at our performances of “Chicken Little” last week.  The children did a wonderful job memorizing their lines and performing their roles in front of different audiences. Way to go, boys and girls!

Thank-you for all your support and assistance this school year. As parents, you play a vital part in helping children meet success. Over the summer vacation, I strongly encourage you to read to your child daily and to practise writing by using the word wall words that we have been working on all year. I have included a list of recommended activities on our last class newsletter.  Doing just one or two of these activities each day over the summer break will help to keep your child working and learning. Enjoy a happy and safe summer!

Depave Paradise! The beginning of the greening of St. Anthony School

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Today we starting on a great journey that will change the face of St. Anthony School.  A group of dedicated volunteers from Ecology Ottawa, teachers, parents and one student worked up to seven hours to cut into tones of pavement and gravel.  We filled an entire dumpster and created a huge pile of gravel too – all of this will be recycled by our contractor whose main job so far has been to cut into the old asphalt so we could pry it up and remove it from the yard.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The project was funded by Green Communities Canada who received funding from RBC .  Evergreen Canada did the design work and Ecology Ottawa administered the entire project.  What a great group of partners.  I am so grateful that there are foundations and corporations that really want to get to work with schools like ours to make a better environment for our kids.  This is how we must do things, look for great community partners who will continue to work with our school to fund depaving, the arts, recreation programming – anything that will make the educational experience richer for our students.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

We have worked with so many wonderful groups this year – Opera Lyra, Little Horn Theatre, Table Tennis Canada, Evergreen Canada, Young Rembrandts, Learn to Play, Fun 2 Run, MASC, Organic Growers of Ottawa, Big Kid Entertainment, Christie Lake Kids,  the YMCA, Social Rec Connect and Somerset West Community Health Center, and all our political representatives- all these groups and individuals have worked hard to provide a richer environment for our students.  What a great privilege to work in such a wonderful community!

I want to thank all the groups who are working hard to give our kids something special as part of their educational experience.  We really appreciate all you have done and all the time and resources you have poured into our school.  You are part of our community and you are all doing wonderful work.

With help from our partners and new ones to come, we will continue our depaving work at St. Anthony and will continue to dig up the rotting asphalt that retains stormwater and winer melt, creates hazards for our kids and actually contributes to Global Warming.

A great day for our school – thank-you to all the volunteers and foundations that made this possible!

Teacher Notes for the week

Ms Myers

It was great to see all the “Wonderful Ones” and their families at our school social last week. We had 100% participation in grade 1! The children are already talking about the possibilities for next year’s gathering…! In math this week we will be using positional words to describe where objects are located (above, below, left, right, etc.). You can reinforce this vocabulary using objects in your home. In language we have been focusing on the importance of story-telling in aboriginal culture. This is in preparation for our trip to the Summer Solstice festival this Friday, June 19 at Vincent Massey Park. Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather and pack a healthy lunch that includes water. We will be eating our lunch “picnic style” at the park!

Ms Rupnik’s class

In our Primary Language Class this week, we will work on summer vocabulary and write in our journals. We will continue our Social Language activities, focusing on being teased at school.  We will also spend time observing and watering our little perennial garden we started a few weeks ago.  We sure hope to see many parents and family members at our year-end performances of Chicken Little on Tuesday, June 16.  The morning class will present at 9:15am and the afternoon class at1:00pm.

St. Anthony Catholic School Rips up Parking Lot to Plant Garden

4 June 2015 (Ottawa) – St. Anthony Catholic School is teaming up with local residents and Ecology

Ottawa to tear up a portion of their school parking lot and plant a garden. On June 20th, MP Paul Dewar,

MPP Yasir Naqvi and Councillor Catherine McKenney will help kick off the event from 10am-10:45am.

This Depave Paradise project will see volunteers tear up asphalt and install trees and flowers in its place.

This one-day event is possible thanks to a grant from the RBC Blue Water Fund, in partnership with

Green Communities Canada.

Who: Ecology Ottawa, Green Communities Canada, St. Anthony Catholic School

Where: St. Anthony Catholic School, 391 Booth Street, Ottawa

When: 20 June 2015, 10am-5pm

What: Depave Paradise events will take place at six sites across Canada this year, with the Ottawa event

kicking them all off. Over the past three years, Depave Paradise participants have removed over 1,000

m2 of asphalt at schools, churches, public lands, community centres, and housing cooperatives.

The gardens and permeable pavement installed in place of the asphalt soak up water into the ground,

filtering it through soil and plants, avoiding runoff and pollution and protecting local waterbodies.

Teacher Notes

Ms Myers Class

In math this week we will continue exploring probability concepts. We will be using vocabulary such as “likely,” “unlikely,” and “certain,” to describe and predict various events. In language, the children will be sharing the narrative stories they wrote based on a photograph they chose. Thursday, June 11th marks our after school social for families – hope to see you there!

Ms Rupnik – PLC

This week in the Primary Language Class, we will focus on the Chicken Little story some more by asking critical thinking questions (for example: What makes the fox in the story a dangerous stranger? Why does Chicken Little put himself and his friends in danger by listening to the fox? Was the sky really falling?, etc.). We will also continue to rehearse our class play. Remember practice makes perfect !  Please keep helping your child with our last homework calendar of the school year.

Grade 1s will be learning how to design a poster for an event and Grade 2s will be designing a book cover for a story. In Math, we are working on fractions. We had our pic-nic last week and the students got to enjoy some veggies and strawberries, chips, juice, and a cookie for desert! It was really fun! This week we are having our school year end social event! This promises to be an amazing evening for our students, staff, and families. Come and have some fun from 4:30 to 7:00pm. Please make sure the kids have their library books returned to school. We have library on Monday. As the weather gets hotter, please send the students to school dressed appropriately (t-shirts, hats, sunscreen). I encourage the students to bring water bottles with them to school as well. Looking forward to another blessed week!
