FDK News for June 27, 28 and 29

It is hard to believe that we are coming to the end of an amazing year in Kindergarten.  We would like to take this opportunity to thank our parent community for the support and commitment to making your child’s educational journey a positive experience.  We have enjoyed getting to know all of you and your children.  We have watched as your children have grown and blossomed into amazing individuals and who have made a huge contribution and impact at St Anthony Catholic School.  They arrive each day ready to learn and embrace all learning opportunities.  We have created lasting memories this year and we are so grateful for the opportunity to teach an amazing group of students!

We would also like to thank Mrs. Heagle for all of her hard work and dedication to the students.  We were truly blessed to have Mrs. Heagle on the FDK Team.  She arrived each day with a smile and a laugh and created an environment where each child felt a strong sense of belonging.  Her happiness and laughter was felt throughout the entire room.  She brings so much joy to all and this is evident as soon as you walk into the classroom.  Mrs. Heagle’s contribution to our school community will be felt for many years to come, from her contagious laughter throughout the class, to her amazing organizational skills, to creating a learning environment that fosters positive peer interactions, to bringing so many things for students such as crafts, toys and gifts, to bringing in plants for our school garden!!  We wish you continued success at your new school.

Reminder:  Walking Field Trip to Plant Bath Sprinkler Park!!  Tuesday June 28th, 2016.  Departure at 8:45 am, returning to St Anthony by 11:00 am.  Thank you to all of our volunteers!  Please apply sunscreen and wear bathing suits under clothes to school!  Please bring clothes to change into and a towel!  Sunhat and Sunscreen and a water bottle are also needed!

Looking forward to a wonderful last three days with our students!  Have a safe and happy summer!  See you in September!

Ms. Myers Grade One Class

Last Thursday, the “Wonderful Ones” bade farewell to the lovely little chicks!  It was certainly a fun and learning filled experience for everyone!  We were amazed at how much they grew in the short time we cared for them, with many chicks beginning to grow their feathers!  Farmers Tammy and Rene were pleased that the children responded so well, showing great care, concern, and respect for the little lives that were entrusted to the class.  Though it was sad to see them go, we all have to admit that our classroom now smells a whole lot better since the chicks departed…! In the few days we have left together we will spend some time going through the work we have accumulated throughout the year. On Monday, the children will bring home much of the work they have done this year. I encourage you to look through it with your child and discuss the gains they have made since September. Report cards will go home on Tuesday. The children are looking forward to “hosting” the upcoming grade 1 students and sharing with them some of the things that they can look forward to in September!  Thank you for all your support this year. I hope all families will enjoy a restful summer holiday.

Mrs. Rupnik’s Class

This week in the Primary Language Class, we will “pop” our way to the end of the school year. We will count the days left with an activity inside each balloon (for example: Monday– make a thank-you for the van drivers and celebrating summer birthdays, Tuesday– make a Tic-Tac-Toe game with mosaic tiles and enjoying freezies, Wednesday– games and free time!)

Thank-you for all your support and assistance this school year. As parents, you play a vital part in helping children meet success. Over the summer vacation, I strongly encourage you to read to your child daily and practise writing by using the word wall words that we have been working on all year. I have included a list of recommended activities on our last class newsletter.  Doing just one or two of these activities each day over the summer break will help to keep your child working and learning. I wish everyone a happy summer- may it be full of sunshine and lots of fun memories.

June News from the Green Club

It is with much joy and excitement that we announce our new GOLD status for our Ontario EcoSchools Certification. “Ontario EcoSchools is an environmental education and certification program for grades K-12 that helps school communities develop both ecological literacy and environmental practices to become environmentally responsible citizens and reduce the ecological footprint of schools.” Gold level status indicates that St. Anthony Catholic School has taken a comprehensive approach to implementing the EcoSchools program and has achieved significant results in each section of certification. Congratulations to all the boys and girls and staff members at St. Anthony Catholic School!!!! Here is our summary report.

Ontario EcoSchools Certification Application – Application Summary Report 2015-16

St. Anthony Feedback: St. Anthony, it was a pleasure to read through your application and learn about the many ways your EcoTeam is working together to make big changes at your school. Your Bright Light award motivates students to continue to improve their Energy Conservation efforts and is a great way to celebrate successes. You should be very proud of your weekly litterless lunches and your composting program, these are excellent Waste Minimization initiatives. Please be sure to include student names on your Walkabout Worksheets for full recognition in 2.10 and 3.10. Your Asphalt to Oasis project is an amazing School Ground Greening project, congratulations on receiving the AVIVA grant! We can’t wait to see how this project progresses. Please note, projects in the planning stages are not eligible for section 4.5. In Curriculum, your submissions show that you have a dedicated team of teachers who embed environmental learning into their teaching. Your Walk to School campaign is a great example of an Environmental Stewardship campaign that goes above and beyond while engaging the entire school community in environmental action and learning. The Electricity Safety presentation is excellent for increasing awareness of an environmental issue. Combine this rich learning experience with a whole school community environmental action for full recognition in 6.1. Congratulations on a fantastic year and keep up the great work St. Anthony!

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

Last blog of the school year…unbelievable!!!!

The students had a wonderful time exploring Maker Space on Friday.  A wonderful program that has been led by our Librarian Technician, Mrs. Iverson.  The students were able to try all the wonderful kits and created lots of things using gears, circuits, netbooks, knex, magnets, playdoh…. Hopefully many more students will get involved with this wonderful program next year right here at St. Anthony Catholic.

The students have been sent home with all their work to share with you and to review all they have learned and completed throughout the year.  It’s amazing all they have done and the growth we have seen over the year. Super!!!

We will begin the week with a picnic at Plouffe Park, located next to Plant Bath Recreation Centre.  We will walk over with the grade 5/6 class and enjoy the morning together. Your child was sent home a note telling about the morning we will spend together playing games, having lunch and maybe getting a little wet in the splash pad to cool off.  Students should come wearing sunscreen, a hat and comfortable shoes to be able to participate in the activities.  They must also bring a water bottle and their lunch. Looking forward to a fun morning!

It has been such a pleasure working with your child this school year.  The grade 4/5 team proved to be a hard working, determined group of students that worked together for the success of all.  I wish you all a wonderful summer spent with family and friends. I look forward to seeing everyone in the fall with a renewed energy.

Thank you for your continued support throughout the whole school year!

Have a wonderful summer!

FDK News for the week of June 20-24
Congratulations to all of our Senior Kindergarten class!  They participated in a beautiful celebration in the gym.  They sang songs, said a prayer, received their little diplomas, watched a slideshow and ate cake and watermelon!  Most importantly, the students celebrated with their families and they were so proud of themselves and the loved ones who came to show their support!  Thank you to all of our SK families!  Also a special thank you to Mr. McGuire, Ms. Ekick, Mrs. Rupnik, Mrs. Troccoli, EDP staff, the FDK team, our grade 2 helpers and the JK students for your support!

We had a special visit from a local paramedic named Brian.  He came to share some great safety tips and to explain the vital role that paramedics play in our community.  Students were very attentive and asked great questions!

We hope you enjoy the Father’s Day gift and you get to spend some quality family time together!  We have started to send many materials home, like blankets, extra clothes, student work, etc.  Please keep all items at home, now that we are approaching the end of the year, these items are no longer needed.
Thank you for returning all forms for our year-end field trip to the Sprinkler Park at Plant Bath on Tuesday June 28th, 2016.  We look forward to celebrating the end of the year with you!
Many events happening this week at St Anthony. Leaving Ceremony on June 22 at 9:00 am, all welcome to attend, Awards day on June 23, and Family BBQ on June 23rd starting at 4:30 pm.  Please check school website for more information.

Grade One Mrs. Myers Class

The “Wonderful Ones” welcomed 34 new “classmates” this week!!  Our chicks arrived!! It was all fast and furious!  They are certainly the “talk of the town!” We were fascinated as we watched them break out of their shell! We’ve enjoyed holding them, watching them, and most of all, listening to them!!  The children have been learning how to be good “hosts” as all the classes have come through to see our little “darlings!” It has been a great opportunity to share our learning (the grade ones feel they are “eggsperts!!”) – and also to share the joy of witnessing God’s amazing creation!  The chicks will remain for a few days this week and then we will bid farewell. Even though the chicks have taken over our classroom, we will do our best to keep up with all our other learning!  In math this week we will explore probability – predicting what might happen based on our experience. We will use words such as “possible,” “ sometimes,” “always,” and “never,” to describe things we see and do. On Monday, Jennifer Johnson from Rosemount Library will be visiting to tell us about the wonderful programming that the Ottawa Public Library provides through the summer months. We look forward to seeing families at our school B.B.Q. taking place on Thursday evening after school.  Have a great week!

Grade 2-1

Important Dates: Thursday, June 23, 2016— Awards Ceremony
Thursday, June 23, 2016–  Family BBQ (4:30- 7pm)

We had a great week in grade 2 last week! Welcome to the home stretch! Summer has arrived and it has brought the heat! Please remember to dress your child appropriately and send a reusable water bottle if possible.

Language- we are continuing with synthesizing while reading. The students are now beginning to share more of their thoughts as they grow and change during our read-alouds. In writing, we will discuss different styles of poetry and write some of our own poems.

Math- we are working on fact families (related addition and subtraction facts up to 18). Knowing fact families can help to reinforce the basic facts, as well as, teach the concept of equality.

Science- we are continuing our unit on Air and Water in the Environment. This week we will focus on environmental problems and solutions and what we can/should be doing to help.

Drama- each group’s presentation of “Moose’s Loose Tooth” have turned out great! We will practice some more this week, including with costumes. The students showed great interest in sharing the play with the rest of the school- performances will be scheduled for next week.
Grade 2-2

Rupnik 11

Mrs. Rupnik’s Class

It was wonderful to see so many family members at our performances of “The Little Red Hen” last week.  The children did a wonderful job memorizing their lines and performing their roles in front of different audiences. Bravo, boys and girls!  I can’t believe fast the school year is winding down.  Although it is getting a little harder to keep the children engaged in learning all day long, I can always count on keeping them hooked during our read-alouds.  They love listening to, discussing, and connecting with the characters in our stories. The “Last Day Blues” is the perfect way to end our year of read-alouds. In this story, the students are worried that Mrs. Hartwell is going to spend her entire summer missing them, but Mrs. Hartwell is secretly just as thrilled about summer as they are. For writing this week, we will work on summer vocabulary and finish our ‘bucket list’ for the summer.

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

Happy Father’s Day  to all the dad’s! Hope you enjoyed a wonderful weekend!

The last full week of the school year is full of activity.  On Tuesday many of the junior students will be participating in the board Track and Field meet. Wednesday is our year end school mass where all are welcome to join us in celebrating a wonderful school year. Thursday will be our awards assembly where many students will be recognized for their hard work throughout the year.

In language arts, we are using many of the comprehension strategies we have used throughout the year ie. predicting, analyzing, visualizing… as we enjoy read alouds through our text talk resource. We will also continue to look at different types of media and discuss the strategies used to attract their chosen audience.  The students will also be working on their Digital Passport – an online resource that allows the students to interact with different activities to teach the students how to be good digital citizens.  Very important lessons in this day and age!

In math, we have completed our 3-D city.  We have very creative architects in our grade 4/5 class.  We will be reviewing the concepts we have learned over the year with a focus on basic facts and multiplying and dividing larger numbers.

Looking forward to an exciting week!

Thank you for your continued support!

Have a wonderful week!

We hope you had a great PD Day!  All of our butterflies have been released into a school garden.   We had such a great time with this amazing hands-on learning experience.  All of our sunflower plants are now in the school garden too.  Students really enjoyed digging in the dirt to make this happen.
This will be a special week for our Senior Kindergarten students.  They will be graduating!  We will be celebrating the Senior Kindergarten Graduation on Thursday June 16, 2016 at 1:30 pm in the Gym.  We look forward to honoring our eleven graduates on Thursday!

This week we will continue to review many of the concepts learned this year and to share and discuss many great ideas to create a little memory book of our 2015-2016 school year.

Wishing all of our Dad’s a very Happy Father’s Day next weekend!

Grade One News Ms. Myers

It promises to be another exciting week in Grade One!  We are expecting that our chicks will begin to hatch towards the end of the week!  Farmer Tammy will be bringing the “brooder” for the chicks so we will be able to keep them around for a few days before sending them back to Sunwing Gardens! We will be writing about our observations as the “adventure” unfolds right here in our classroom!  This week we will continue our geometry work as we work with tangrams. Ask your child about these 7 “magic shapes” and how they can flip, slide, and turn them to create different things! There are still a few outstanding library and home reading books that need to be returned. Please check your child’s agenda for any reminders regarding these items. The “Wonderful Ones” will be leading the morning announcements this week. If your child has been asked to say a prayer, please have them practice reading it aloud to you in preparation. Have a great week!

Grade Two Ms. Moga’s class

Language- we are working on synthesizing when reading. We will do a short poetry writing unit over the next couple of weeks as well.

Math- we will finish up Mapping Skills this week. Students will work in groups to find treasure in our school yard following instructions written by a different group. Our last unit is from Patterning and Algebra: students will learn how to use two number expressions using the equal sign and how to determine the missing number in an equation (numbers to 18).

Science- we are continuing with Air and Water in the Environment. The students have been very engaged in this unit. This week we will investigate why clean water is a scarce resource in many parts of the world and begin to make a plan for keeping air and water clean in our community.

Art- our focus continues to be Drama. The students have been divided into groups, assigned a role, and have begun to practice. Ideally, they will be ready to present by the end of this week.

Have a great week!

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

The students did a wonderful job with their oral poem presentation. There were a wide variety of poems that were very entertaining to listen to.  It was evident that the students spent much time preparing for their presentation by memorizing their poems. No cheat notes required!  Well done!!

In language, we have been analyzing a variety of media advertisements.  We have been looking at commercials, magazines and posters. Students are asked to look at these advertisements and comment on the target audience and how advertisers try to make their products appealing.  You can have discussions about advertisements with your child so that children are aware of the different tactics used to try to sell products that might not be in the best interest of the audience.

Our grade 4/5 team have been working hard at being architects of our 3-D city.  They have been using paper nets to create a variety of structures to enhance our city.  Ask your young ‘architect’ what structure they have created. The students are required to name the different properties of each of the 3-D buildings they create.

The homework duotangs will be sent home this week.  Students make keep them at home and use them to review concepts over the summer. This week they are asked to read on Raz-kids for 45 mins and complete the 3-D geometry activities on mathletics.

Thank you for your continued support!

Have a wonderful week!

The arrival of the butterflies!

FDK News

The butterflies are here!  We released a few butterflies on Friday after they emerged from their cocoons and they were ready to fly!  The students are so excited to see this amazing life cycle happen before their very own eyes!
Our farm trip was a huge success.  We had a great time, thanks to our volunteers for coming with us.  We are very appreciative of your time and dedication.  We had a 1:2 ratio which ensured that all students were safe.  We enjoyed meeting all of the animals on the farm!
Next week, we will have a movie and PJ day on Monday!  Students can wear their pajamas to school and we can buy popcorn for $1.00.  We are very excited to have this special day as a thank you to all of our students who raised money for the Terry Fox Campaign earlier this year!

Reading Buddies!
Grade One Ms. Myers’ Class

Our trip to Gatineau Park was a great success!  The weather was perfect and the bugs stayed away!

Thanks to our parent volunteers who help make these experiences possible. The “Wonderful Ones” are developing a great sense of awe in all of God’s creation! Not only did we have a chance to experience the joy of being in nature, we also continue to observe and care for the eggs in our incubator! Farmers Tammy and Rene visited on Thursday to “candle” the eggs. By shining a special light tool on the egg, we were able to see the chick embryos move!   It was truly amazing! In math this week we will use transparent mirrors as we observe and create symmetrical shapes and designs. In language we will focus on the critical thinking skills we need when reading signs and advertisements around us. Last week a final class newsletter was sent home. There is no formal homework calendar for this month, but the children should be reading for at least 10 minutes every night! On Monday, June 6, students will enjoy a “Pajama and Movie” activity!  Popcorn will be on sale for $1.00 a bag.  We look forward to a short but busy week – Friday, June 10 is a P.D. day!

Ms. Moga’s Grade Two Class:

Important Dates:

June 6– Last library visit. All books should be returned and students will no longer be signing books out for the remainder of this school year.

Moga 2

Math: we have finished our unit on probability. The students enjoyed learning the concepts of probability through a variety of games and activities. Our next focus is mapping skills. The two expectations for this unit are: describe the relative locations (e.g., beside, two steps to the right of ) and the movements of objects on a map, and draw simple maps of familiar settings, and describe the relative locations of objects on the maps (e.g. draw a map of the classroom, showing the locations of the different pieces of furniture).

Language: almost all the students are finished their narratives. They put great care and effort into their good copies. We will shift our writing focus to poetry to finish out the year. In reading, we will be discussing synthesizing- this is when students use all the previously learned strategies together to create original insights, perspectives and understandings.

Science- last week we discussed wind energy and the water cycle. We will continue to investigate and discuss the water cycle this week.

Arts- the students completed and presented their dances. They did a fantastic job! This week we will begin a unit on drama. The students will learn about the basic drama elements (character, voice, space, energy). We will then work in groups to practice and perform a short play.

Homework- this will continue into June. I encourage students to get outside, be active, and enjoy the beautiful weather; however, structure and routine, including homework completion, are still very important during these last few weeks of the school year.

If you have any questions/concerns, please contact me via your child’s agenda.

Have a great week,

Ms. Rupnik’s Post PLC Class

This week in the Primary Language Class, we will be working on transition plans, which are mandated by the Ministry of Education. A transition plan supports special education students with the move between grades as well as changeover from a special education system class to a regular classroom setting.  I will pass this transition plan along to the new teacher(s) who will be working with your child next school year. We will also focus on the Little Red Hen story some more by asking critical thinking questions (for example: Do you think the animals will be more willing to help out next time?; How would the story be different if all the animals had agreed to help the Little Red Hen with the housework?, etc.). We will continue to rehearse our class play.Remember practice makes perfect!  Please keep helping your child with our last homework calendar of the school year. June News From the Grade Three/Four Class

It is hard to believe that we are in our final weeks of the year.  It is amazing how much the students have grown.  I have enjoyed being part of their learning experience.  I would like to thank you for your continued support throughout this year.  I hope that the summer is filled with relaxation and fun!

Looking into June…

For the next few weeks our focus will be to consolidate our learning in the areas of Language and Math.  In Language we will be exploring our last writing form of explanatory writing.  A large focus will be on editing our writing and using the proper conventions of writing.  In Reading, we will review all the reading strategies we have covered over the year and focus on the importance of these strategies to become a good reader.

In Math, we have been focusing on the different forms of measurement from linear to area and perimeter, mass and capacity. We have also explored ‘Probability’ of events and practiced using the following terms (impossible, certain, likely and unlikely) .

In Science, the grade three’s will be exploring and investigating the importance of plants in our environment.

In Religion and Family Life, we wrap up our unit on “Living in the World” and “The Holy Spirit”.

Homework:  Homework will be minimal for the rest of this month; I encourage the students to continue with links given to reinforce reading and math at home and over the summer.  Work completed throughout the year will be sent home, take some time to go over what was learned over the course of this year.

Weather:  As the weather is getting warmer it is strongly recommended that the children come to school dressed for the weather with hats and water bottles.  Sunscreen should be applied in the morning before school.

Reminders:

  • All library books are due, fees will be given for books not returned
  • PJ and movie day on Monday
  • PD day on Friday

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

Our first full week of June is upon us!  Bring it on!

The students participated in our school Track and Field day with such determination and effort it was a joy to be a part of.  Every student brought an energy that was contagious and helped to encourage their teammates.  A truly wonderful morning!  They should all be congratulated.

We will begin our week with a PJ and movie morning!  This is in recognition of meeting our fundraising goal for our Terry Fox Event back in September! Wow time does fly!   So the students are encouraged to come in their PJs for a relaxing movie morning. Papa Jack popcorn will be sold during this fun event.

We have begun exploring 3-D Geometry. The students have created 3-D shapes using plasticine and toothpicks. We have identified several of the properties as we continue to work with 3-D shapes.  We will begin creating a 3-D city using paper nets along with the students imagination.  As the week continues our city will begin to evolve.

The students will be presenting their poems that they have been practicing over the last couple of weeks.  We look forward to hearing a wide variety of expressive poetry in our Grade 4/5 class. The students have also worked hard to publish their porquoi tales. They will also have an opportunity to share their creative stories with their peers.

Students are encouraged to bring water bottles to class to help them stay well hydrated as the days get warmer.

Thank you for your continued support!

Have a wonderful week!

Ms. Colaiacovo’s Grade 5/6 class

The students in the grade 5/6 class passed a very busy week and exciting week! We began with an interesting and interactive Science in Schools workshop on Monday afternoon, learning about properties of air and flight. Our students enthusiastically and energetically participated in the track and field try-outs on a beautiful Tuesday morning and the team has now been made to represent St Anthony at the Board meet on June 21. The grade 6 students wrote the final sections of the EQAO tests to close out the week while the grade 5 students enjoyed the mornings with Mrs. Troccoli and her grade 4/5 crew.

This week will bring more excitement as the week begins with the long-ago promised pyjama and movie morning on Monday, a concert on Wednesday, poetry recital oral presentations beginning on Thursday, and a PD day on Friday.
Please continue to check in with your child daily to ensure that he/she is continuing to work hard, remain focused and attend school on time for these very important final weeks of the 2015-2016 school year.
