Kindergarten News for October 31-November 4
Happy Halloween.  We wish all of our students a happy and safe Halloween!  We are having so much fun counting spiders, bats, pumpkins, and cats.  We have enjoyed having many real pumpkins in the room.  We are comparing, decorating, touching, weighing and asking many questions about pumpkins!  A great inquiry is happening on this subject!  We can not wait to carve many pumpkins on Monday!
Counting and Number Recognition

Counting and Number Recognition

We enjoyed the story “Monster needs a Costume”.  We are making connections to this story using our own ideas!  Many students raise their hands to share their ideas and connections.  We encourage everyone to have an opportunity to speak in front of the whole class!  Students are learning to stay on topic and to share relevant ideas about their own personal connections to a story.  At home, you can say…”This Story reminds me of…..”  Or “I have a connection..”  When reading a bedtime story.
A haunted house!

A haunted house!

In math, the students created their own Halloween patterns with stickers. They are also being introduced to the concept of weight by comparing the weight of a classmate to that of a large pumpkin. Some students measured their weight in a scale.
In French, they are learning about the four food groups and what foods are in each group. This is part of the Healthy Eating curriculum.
Please remember to send your child with a Halloween costume for our Halloween parade Monday morning.
Your child might request to include Halloween candy in their lunches. We ask that parents only include one treat in their lunch kits.
Thank you for sending your child to school ready for the weather.  Hats, mitts, splash pants/snow pants and warm boots are needed as we spend 40 minutes at lunch and approx 20 minutes at the end of the day outside!!
Congratulations to K1 class!  They are the St Anthony Superstars this week!  We love caring for others and hope it continues all year.  Our new theme is “I have Ideas” for November and December.

Ms Myers’ Grade One – Two class

Our trip to Valley View Farm was a great success!  The children enjoyed the feeding all the animals, finding their way through the corn maze, and choosing a pumpkin to take home. It was a great afternoon to enjoy the crisp autumn air!  Thank you to all those parents who were able to join us for this outing. We read a lot of pumpkin stories before going on our trip. Each one seemed to end with characters enjoying a pumpkin treat…so we felt we needed to do the same!  We made some delicious pumpkin muffins! The children enjoyed reading the recipe, measuring out all the ingredients, and stirring them altogether! The muffins were superb!   In the coming week there will be a few items to look for in your child’s backpack. A new homework calendar and November newsletter will go home early in the week (a reminder that copies of these items are also posted on the school website), as well, your child’s Progress Report will be sent home on Thursday.  As Remembrance Day approaches we will be talking about the importance of peace…in our classroom, our school community, and the world. In math we are working on the concepts of “more” and “less” (sometimes referred to as “greater than,” “less than”). At home have your child use their estimating skills to guess a number of objects (less than 100) and then count them out, checking to see if their estimate was more or less than the actual number. These kinds of activities help build your child’s understanding of quantity. Have a great week!

Mrs. Rupnik’s Primary Language Class

We will begin the Halloween week with new word wall words and drawing faces on naturally sweet but low in sugar fruit to create Clementine Pumpkins. Please take some time to read our class newsletter and the food pamphlet called ‘Facts on Snacks’ I will send home on Monday. This pamphlet can help you plan healthy snacks for school. Keep in mind that our school supports wastefree snacks and lunches. The children will also finish sequencing pictures of the pumpkin life cycle and writing about Halloween using their five senses.  The new homework calendars will be sent home on Tuesday, November 1, 2016.

Ms Moga’s Grade two-three class

What a great week in Grade 2/3 ! The students enjoyed our trip to Valleyview Farms; I think getting to take a pumpkin home was the overall favourite part of their trip. If you’re in the school, keep an eye on our bulletin board which will feature their recount writing about our trip to the farm.

Reading- We’re continuing to make connections while we read. Students will begin making text-to-text connections between two stories read-aloud in class. Making these types of connections helps students better understand what they have read, and also make predictions.

Math- We will continue our patterning unit. Students will learn about sorting by two attributes, as well as about growing patterns.

Science- We will investigate and explore Fish and Amphibians this week.

Religion- We are still working on our Digital Samaritan Unit. I am hoping to finish this unit by starting a “Good News” blog to be written by the students. I will provide more information about this as it gets started.

Have a great week!

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

Happy Halloween!! It’s scary that it is already the last day of October!! I look forward to seeing all the creative costumes being worn by our team…should make for an interesting and exciting day.  We will use the Halloween theme to complete a variety of activities in math and language.

Every student presented their Booktalk last week.  It was our first talk of the year and the students stepped up and put forth a solid effort. It was wonderful to hear about all the great books the students are reading and how happy they were to share their joy of reading with their classmates. As we look ahead to our next Booktalk we will focus on getting more creative with our presentations, speaking with greater confidence and choosing the most important parts of the book, while making connections to enhance the presentations.  Look for the rubric coming home in your child’s homework duotang Monday. Please sign and have your child return the duotang with the completed homework to school by Friday.

In math, we continue to work with addition and subtraction using larger numbers.  We are also solving problems involving decimals and using money inquiries to help make real life connections.  We spent quality time practicing subtraction across zeros.  Many students find this skill quite challenging. Please have your child practice these skills as they are extremely important across all strands of the curriculum. For homework this week students are required to complete the addition and subtraction activities on Mathletics by Friday.

In, Language we will work to publish our Dream paragraphs.  We are learning to revise our writing to help make our ideas clearer and more interesting.  As well, we are editing our writing to make sure we have capital letters, proper punctuation in the right places and correct spelling. This will be helped with the use of the read and write app on the Chromebook.

We will welcome Mr. Moleski into our class on Wednesday. He comes from the board and will work with us to help us use all the tools on our Chromebook which will also enhance our writing.

The students look forward to reading with their kinder buddies every Wednesday.  Too cute!!

In Science, we had Gord Hunter from Destination Imagination join us to challenge our students. They worked cooperatively to complete 3-minute challenges. It was exciting to watch them work as a team to find success.

The grade 4/5 Team were the proud winners of the superstars trophy for “Caught you Caring” the week of October 17th! Way to go Team!!

Have a great week!

Teacher Notes for this week

Kindergarten News for October 24-28, 2016

We are ready for a great week of learning in Kindergarten.  We have created new learning centers for patterning using natural materials.  Students are enjoying using leaves, sticks and rocks to create patterns.  They also love our Halloween patterning centers and are using pumpkins, bats, cats and ghosts.  We also started signing in everyday by writing our names.  We will be reading many Halloween stories this week and singing some Pumpkin songs!

In Math, the students will be counting Halloween items to ten and work on number recognition to 10. With the items they have counted, they will be making a witch’s brew.
In French, the students are sorting fruits and vegetables. This week they will be introduced to the sentence Je mange …. (I eat …) and asked to finish the sentence with a fruit or vegetable.
The Kindergarten students are invited to wear their costumes to school on MondayOctober 31.  The students will have the opportunity to tour the school in their costumes in the morning. Please refrain from sending any toy guns/swords to school. If needed, please send a change of clothing as the students will most likely want to wear their normal clothes for the remainder of the day.

Monday is Photo Retake Day.  Please let us know if you would like a retake done.  We will also have an Assembly for our new Catholic Graduate Expectation called “I have ideas”. We will be celebrating our waste-free Winners and our school sport teams!
Thursday we will have a Halloween Party at 4:00pm.  Our parent council will be putting on this great event.  All families welcome!

Ms Myers Grade 1-2 class

The season of autumn has provided us with many learning opportunities!  In science we have been inquiring about seasonal changes and the impact they have on living things. We read the story Possum’s Harvest Moon. Ask your child to tell you about this wonderful story – and some of the great “WOW” words they learned such as “harvest” and “snug!” On Monday we will work with Mrs. Manzoli’s Grade 3 class to present our next Catholic Graduate Expectation to the school – “I Have Ideas.” We will be considering things like: I have thoughts and opinions that matter; I share my ideas and respect those of others; I use my ideas to bring about positive change the way Jesus would want me to. On Tuesday we look forward to our trip to Valley View Farm! We hope to see pumpkins growing in the fields, visit some of the farm animals, and go for a wagon ride. Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather and has a healthy lunch packed for the day. It would be great if school t-shirts could be worn on this day. The Halloween party, hosted by St. Anthony’s Parent Council, will be held on Thursday, Oct. 27th in the gym from4:00-5:00 p.m. Parents must accompany their children to this event.  A reminder that October monthly homework is due back to school on Wednesday! We are looking forward to another busy week in Grade 1/2!

Reminders: Tuesday Oct. 25– Field trip to Valleyview Farm
         Friday Oct. 28– Pizza Day

Positive Notes- you may notice a coloured piece of paper in your child’s agenda- these are my way of communicating something positive I noticed in class. Look for them every now and then and ask your child why he/she received it!

Writing-  The students have finished their Terry Fox Walk recounts. They will write one more recount this week about our trip to Valleyview Farm.

Reading- The students enjoyed sharing their text-to-self connections throughout our read-alouds. They made fantastic connections that demonstrated their understanding of the story and not just surface connections or coincidences. We will continue to practice making and discussing text-to-self connections this week.
Math- We wrapped up our Money unit by playing games that had the students counting coins and showing money amounts with different coins. I strongly encourage you to practice counting money with your child at home- it is a tricky skill to master. We will touch upon it again during our Addition and Subtraction unit. This week, we will move onto our Patterning unit.Science- The students enjoyed learning about insects. Ask your child about the identifying characteristics of an insect! This week, we will investigate reptiles.

Religion- We will continue with the Digital Samaritan Unit.  We will discuss being part of an online community.

Have a great week!

Ms. Moga

Mrs. Rupnik’s Primary Language Class

This week, I will begin showing the children how ‘think-marks’ work.  ‘Think-marks’ involves stopping while reading and thinking about the story on a deeper level. Students will learn to use post-it notes to record their thinking when reading.  This allows us to talk about our thinking and to better understand the stories we read.

Remember to give your child chances to reread (listen to) the same story many times at home. This is the key to successful reading. To enhance comprehension, here are some questions you can ask your child.

  • What is the title of the book?

  • What do you think will happen next?

  • What is the problem in the book?

  • What do you want to learn?

  • When you were reading this part, what were you picturing in your head?

  • Describe the setting of the story.

  • Describe how a character changed throughout the book.

  • Tell about a part that you liked or disliked and tell why.

  • Does this book remind you of other books?

En français:

Lecture / Reading:  We are continuing to work on the sound “i” and “ch”.  We are reading the comptine “Mimi la souris” et “La Chouette blanche”.  Please continue to practice the word wall words at home.  If you need an extra copy, please let me know.  The words this week are:

regarde (look)   jour (day)    chaud (hot)  école (school)    j’aime (I like/love)

With a focus on Autumn and Halloween, the class is reading “l’Halloween de Maria” and the grade 2’s are also reading “Les animaux du Canada”.

Writing:   We are beginning to write sentences this week with the verbs:  J’ai and J’aime.

Ex.:  J’aime ma famille.  J’aime l’école.  J’aime les animaux.

J’ai 1 frère et une soeur.  J’ai un chien.

We have been also learning some Halloween thematic vocabulary such as:  socière, fantôme, bonbon, maison hantée, chat noir, etc… and we have also talked about which costume they will be wearing.  This week, we will describe our Halloween costumes.

Oral:   Students will continue to be presenting themselves in front of the class.  Some students can already answer all of these questions:  Comment t’appelles-tu?  Es-tu un garçon ou une fille?  Quel âge as-tu?  Quand est ta fête?  Où habites-tu?  Quel est ton numéro de téléphone?  Décris ta famille.  They will also describe their Halloween costumes.

In social studies, we are continuing to work on mapping concepts.  We will talk about Canadian symbols, animals and our flag.  Then we will focus on different countries in the world.

We are continuing to focus on the sound “in,im,ain, ein, aim” this week.  Please continue practicing using these words at home.  The word wall words are a great success.  We use them as much as possible in our daily conversations and all students are understanding their meaning.  We are finishing our “Au Restaurant” unit this week.  The skits/plays are due this Friday.  Some groups are finished a week early and have begun to memorize their lines and are beginning to collect and organize props.

In writing:

With all the activities last week, we did not have the time to work on the  explanatory writing about their favorite restaurant.  Students will pick a restaurant and explain why it is their favorite place to eat.

In Reading:

We will go to the library on Monday.  We will read our books, “Les Animaux, Les Animaux” in our reading groups.   Books will be given to each group to practice at home and at school.

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

We are starting the week with photo retake day and a bake sale organized by the grade 5/6 class to raise money in support of the devastating Hurricane that hit Haiti. Have your child bring in money to enjoy a treat while they support a  great cause.

Students went shopping during math inquiry...

Students went shopping during math inquiry…

The junior division enjoyed a wonderful field trip to the Museum of Nature.  We all learned lots about the Native Americans and the lives they lived. We participated in hands on workshops that included items from the first inhabitants of Canada.

In Language, the students have completed posters and slide presentations about Digital Citizenship.  As well, they are crafting a paragraph about their dream for their future.  We are working to write a good paragraph with a topic sentence, details and a strong conclusion.  The students are using the read and write app on their chromebooks to help edit their final draft before printing.

In math, the students used a variety of addition strategies to solve problems with larger numbers.  The students also worked cooperatively to solve an inquiry that required them to go shopping with a given amount of money, using store flyers, to determine the total cost and the change they would receive in return. Have your child help estimate and calculate the cost of items you buy when you go shopping.

In science, my students have been learning about the human body. They are currently creating a healthy menu for a day while incorporating the 4 food groups.

Monday we will begin presenting our book talks.  The students have had plenty of time to prepare. We are looking forward to hearing all about  the great books the students have been reading.

Our Goodlife fitness instructor, Stacy,  will be back on Tuesday for another active gym class. Students are reminded to bring their library books back to school on Wednesdays.

Thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to send a note in your child’s “Reminder” book or contact me at the school.

Mrs Colaiacovo’s grade 5-6 news

The grade 5/6 class, in an effort to mobilize the OCSB new spiritual theme, “Sent to be the good news”, will be hosting a bake sale on Monday, October 24, 2016. The students have decided that this will be an effective way to reach out in solidarity to the global community and more specifically, to the relief fund for the people of Haiti as they recover from the devastation caused by hurricane Matthew.

Grade 5/6 continues with our busy schedule of curricular and extracurricular activities. We were able to finish the book talk presentations this week and I was very impressed with the enthusiasm and creativity of many of the students’ delivery. Students also worked to finish up their Digital Citizenship presentations and I look forward to seeing those in the coming week. All of us enjoyed the visit to the Canadian Museum of History on Tuesday. Mrs. Troccoli and I both remarked that we, too,  learned a lot during the workshops were provided to our classes!

The girls and boys Gaelic football teams both performed with passion and sportsmanship and represented our school in a big way on Wednesday in the lovely, warm sunshine and on Thursday in the rain! The grade 6 girls began their Go Girls group on Thursday and by all accounts, everyone is enjoying this opportunity.

We begin the week with our bake sale on Monday morning to raise funds for the Haitian Hurricane Matthew relief fund. Thanks, in advance, for your contributions to this effort. This week we will also continue with the YKids Academy and students are reminded to bring their workbooks and YKids t-shirts with them.

Students arriving late to school are not only disrupting their own learning, but of the entire class. Students and parents are reminded of the importance of consistent and timely attendance at school, as most prepare to move on to the intermediate panel next year.

Kindergarten News for October 17-21, 2016
What an exciting week in Kindergarten!!  Even though it was a short week we always manage to pack a lot into four days.  Students were completely engaged during our two school-wide assemblies on Friday.  They listened with enjoyment to our Schoolyard Official Opening event.  Ask your child who came to present a special plaque?  (Mayor Jim Watson) They also loved our Earth Ranger presentation on Friday afternoon.  Ask your child about some of the special animals that came to visit.  ( a lemur, a bald eagle and a special lizard).
In Mathematics, the classes have begun to explore patterns. The students have been copying, extending, and creating their own patterns using coloured cubes, interactive software programs, and other objects in the classroom.
In French, the students are learning the names of various fruits and vegetables. They will be learning to distinguish between a fruit and a vegetable.
As part of encouraging healthy lunches and snacks, we would request that parents not include juice boxes in the lunch kits, especially those who order milk as we have noticed that the students are not eating their lunches. We encourage water bottles and each classroom has a water fountain in the classroom.
Thank you for your photo orders.  All orders are due on October 20, 2016.  If you would like a retake please let us know!
We hope you like your new blue St Anthony shirt if you are a JK student!  We are looking forward to a great week!

Congratulations to all the “Wonderful Ones” and “Terrific Twos” for earning last week’s “Superstars” trophy.  In religion, we have been talking about one of the great commandments that God asked His family to follow – “Love your neighbor as yourself”   – so it is very fitting that our class was recognized for their daily acts of caring and kindness.  In math we are exploring efficient strategies for counting large amounts of objects. The children conducted an “inventory” of various materials in our classroom – they soon figured out that they would need a “system” for counting!  Organizing objects into groups of five and 10 turned out to be really helpful!  This week the students will have an opportunity to work on Raz-Kids on our school iPads. Raz-Kids is an on-line resource that provides access to e-books to support reading. Students can read, listen to, and even self-record themselves reading these books. Reading comprehension quizzes are also available for each book along the way.  Your child can access Raz-Kids at home on a computer, tablet, or phone, by going to http://www.raz-kids.com . The username for our class is mmyers52.  A few reminders… home reading and library books are due on Wednesday and photo orders are due Thursday, October 20. If you would like your child to have a re-take done on Monday, October 24, please write a note in the agenda. Have a great week!

Grade 2-3 Ms Moga’s Class

moga-1

What a week in Grade 2/3! The students enjoyed our Grand Opening of the school yard, and are eagerly anticipating the new play structures. They learned about several endangered animals during the Earth Rangers presentation, which tied in nicely with our science unit.

Writing-  The students have been working hard on their recount writing and they are coming along nicely. Many are on the Editing and Revising step, on their way to completing their Good Copy. I have been meeting with each student as they reach this step to make sure they follow the editing checklist. We will continue working on these this week.

Reading- We began discussing Text-to-Self connections. This is when the reader connects to something in the story. I modelled how to do this, and students are now eager to make their own connections to our read-alouds. This week, we’ll work on making these types of connections that help us enjoy our reading and better understand it.

Math- We briefly reviewed the names of the coins and their values. This week we will focus on showing amounts (up to $1 for Grade 2, and up to $10 for Grade 3) in different ways (e.g. show $0.65 in two different ways using coins). This is an excellent and important skill that can be practiced at home or while out grocery shopping!

Science- We continue our focus on animals- this week we will begin investigating Insects.

Religion- We will focus on our “Samaritans on the Digital Road” Unit. In this unit, students will learn about participating in the digital world in a proactive, responsible and compassionate manner.

Have a great week!

Mrs. Rupnik’s Primary Language Class

A great big thank-you to Mrs. Lim and Mr. McGuire for being our Guest Readers last week and visiting our class to read us a story.  If you are interested in being our Guest Reader and have some time to spare, consider volunteering for one session (about 10 minutes). Please write me a note in the agenda and I will contact you to set up a specific day/time.

The Retelling Journal arrived home for the first time on Friday,October 14, 2016. The purpose of this Story Retelling Journal is to boost children’s understanding of stories we read in class. It works this way: I read a story to the class several times and discuss the story in great detail (i.e. characters, setting, plot, sequencing events of the story, main idea, problem, solution, ending, connections, etc.).  Then the children come home and tell the story to you in their own words.  Parents write the story as the children tell the story in their own words. Lastly, the children draw and colour a picture about the story. I hope your child was able to retell the story, “Six Big Apples”.  Please return the Retelling Journal to school on Monday, October 17.

This week we will begin work on recount writing. Recount writing allows students to retell events from their weekend and describe past experiences.

In order to help keep the class floors neat and tidy, we are requesting that each student brings an inexpensive pair of shoes that could be left at St. Anthony Catholic School. The shoes should be shoes he/she can put on easily on their own (i.e. without laces if your child is unable to tie his/her shoes yet).  Please be sure to write your child’s name in the shoes clearly.

Manzoli’s Grade 3 Class this week…

This week we look at a calmer week ahead after having a very busy week last week.  We had a wonderful assembly on Friday honouring our opening of our new school yard.  With many important people who attended.  The students were very excited when they were surprised with the Fire Department during their recess and also enjoyed a piece of cake to celebrate the occasion.  The students also had a great visit from the Earth Rangers and were able to learn all about those animals that are endangered and even got to meet some of them.  How exciting!

This week we can focus our attention to a full week of more learning.  Tuesday we continue to have our Friends for Life ladies visit once again.  We are about half way through our program. They have been doing such a great job in providing the students with tips and strategies on how to identify a red and green thought.  Wednesday will be our final day of Swim to Survive, the students have already shown improvement in their ability to jump, float and tread water.  Papa Jack popcorn Sale returns again on Thursday.

Learning Goals:

In Mathematics we explored estimating numbers and discussed when estimating would be useful.

Students will be assessed this week on their knowledge and understanding of number sense.  We will also move into our next unit of study which will be addition and subtraction, regrouping and borrowing and number facts.

In Language Arts we continue with recount writing and look closer at the elements of a recount. The students will also be introduced to paragraph writing.  They will be given their new words of the week which are written in their agendas every Monday.  We will have our first word quiz on Friday.

Reminders:

  • Swim to survive on Wednesday
  • Papa Jack popcorn 1$ on Thursday
  • Picture orders due on October 20th  (retake date October 24th)

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

A short week proved to be a full week of learning and activity. The official opening of our new and improved school yard was well attended by parents, media and all the partners that helped make it a reality.  The happy students are the beneficiaries of the cooperative hard work. We certainly do help each other.

In math, we are using a variety of strategies to estimate, then calculate the reasonableness of addition problems that incorporate larger numbers.  The students should be practicing basic addition using mental math which will help them solve more difficult problems.

In language, we read the story “Catching the Moon”.  It is a story based on the true life events of the first female professional baseball player.  We used the reading skill of self-monitoring to fully understand the events and vocabulary of the story.  Ask your child to explain the story to you and the dream that became reality.  The students will be using a graphic organizer to help them write a paragraph about a dream they may hold close to their heart. They are learning to believe!!

The students are also enjoying their kindergarten reading buddies.  They are wonderful role models as they enthusiastically read stories to their younger friends.

We will be going on our field trip to the Museum of History on Tuesday and enjoying an IMAX movie – The Wilds of Africa. It should prove to be a fun and educational experience.

The students brought home their work folder on Friday.  Please look over the work with your child. The students are asked to make corrections and return the folder and work to school.

Homework duotangs will be sent home on Monday. Along with completing the activities in the duotang they are also required to read for 30 minutes on Raz Kids using their chromebooks.

The grade 4/5 team has been working hard, working well and making good choices.  Looking forward to a full week with my team. Thank you for your continued support!

Have a great week!

EDP News (Extended Day Program)

The children are slowly getting settled and are now aware of their routines before and after school. We are excited to have had a few new children join our EDP.

The children made their name tags, and these are on the back wall in Room 27. The kindergarten children traced their names using bingo dabs.

Upon the school-agers’ request, we have a Beta Fish in Room 27.  The children named it ‘Mememomo’.  SA children are feeding the fish every day, and clean the tank once a week according to their responsibility schedule.  It is a good opportunity to learn how to care for another living creature.

Kindergarten News for October 11-14

kp

We hope you enjoyed a wonderful weekend with the family!  Happy Thanksgiving to all!  We enjoyed our Thanksgiving Mass on Thursday and we spoke about many reasons to be thankful, we are thankful for our families, moms, dads, sisters, brothers, grandparents, the earth and the world.
We will be participating in our Grand Opening of the school yard this Friday at 9:30 am.  Students are asked to wear their blue St Anthony T-shirts on Friday.  All new JK and new SK students will be given a new St Anthony shirt this week.

We welcomed Mrs. P to our KP1 class.  We are so fortunate to have an amazing educator with us.  The students transitioned very well to their new learning environments.  We enjoyed making turkeys, new orange playdough, blue slime and making holes in real pumpkins!  A great week of many new learning centres!

 Ms. Myers Grade 1-2 class

This week we welcome Mrs. Mullins to our class. She will be our Home Reading volunteer. Every Wednesday the children will choose a book with Mrs. Mullins and bring it home to practice reading. Please check your child’s backpack this Wednesday for a Ziploc bag containing the book your child chose as well as a reading record sheet.  Each week Mrs. Mullins will listen to your child read their book and they will choose a new one to take home.  Both library and home reading books are to be returned on Wednesdays!  Hopefully this will avoid any confusion with returning items.  Thank you for taking the time to read with your child each night using books in from school or those you may have at home – especially if the books are in your family’s first language!  Click on the following link to read about benefits of reading aloud to your child – it’s simple and free! http://bit.ly/1I9OBRZ   Have a great week!

Ms. Moga’s Grade 2-3 class

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you enjoyed the extra long weekend with family. Fall is truly here- mornings are quite cool and students should have a warm sweater or jacket to help keep them warm.

Reminders: This Friday, October 14th, at 9:30am,  we will have our Grand Opening Celebration of our new school yard. Local media and community leaders will be present and all are welcome to join us.

Writing-  Students are working on their own recounts of our Terry Fox Walk. They are working towards using the elements of the Writing Process (Planning, Rough Copy, Editing/Revising, and Good Copy) to complete a finished piece of writing.

Reading- The students are now familiar with the Fix-Up Strategies for when they don’t know a word, or don’t understand what they are reading. Our next reading focus will be Making Connections. We will begin with Text-to-Self connections- these are highly personal connections that a reader makes between reading material and the reader’s own experiences or life. An example of a text-to-self connection might be, “This story reminds me of a vacation we took to my grandfather’s farm.”

Math- This week, we will shift our focus to money. Grade 2s will be working on identifying coins up to $1, as well as counting, representing and comparing the value of a collection of coins with a maximum value of $1.
Grade 3s will be working on representing and describing the relationships between coins and bills up to $10, as well as, counting and representing the value of a collection of coins and bills with a maximum value of $10.

Science- We continue to explore different groups of animals. This week we will learn more about birds. Ask your child what makes a bird a bird? Hint: It’s not their wings, or that they can fly!

Religion- We will continue to discuss the different parts of the mass. Having visited St. Anthony Church last week for our Thanksgiving Mass, the students should be able to connect the pictures in our book to what they saw last week.

Have a great week!

Mrs. Rupnik’s Class

Congratulations to all the students in the morning class for their fantastic job last week at our Thanksgiving Mass. I am so very proud of all your efforts and hard work.

Once again we are lucky to have a wonderful online reading program called Raz-Kids this school year! This is a reading program that we have already started to use at school but your child also has the opportunity to use it at home as well.  Raz Kids provides students with hundreds of eBooks at their reading level. It also helps children improve recognition of word wall words, enhance oral reading skills, comprehension, etc. Your child will take home their own personal login information this week.

Some helpful hints:

  1. Have your child work on only one book at a time.

  2. First have your child listen to the book.

  3. Then have your child read the book.

  4. Finally have your child take the comprehension quiz. If your child does not pass the quiz the first time, have him/her listen to the book again and then try retaking the quiz once more.

Did you know that October is Library Month? Throughout the month of October, Canadians everywhere will be celebrating libraries as pillars of our community. Consider visiting your local public library with your child this month.

This week, we have our first Guest Reader sessions. The children have read the riddles and together we are trying to figure out who is coming to read us a book. Ask your child about this special event!

manzoli-1

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. Hope you had a chance to enjoy God’s creation with family and friends.  We had a busy week last week with the beginning of swim to survive and our wonderful Thanksgiving Mass.  As we enter another short week there is lots to look forward to again.  We will begin with Friends for Life on Tuesday.  Students are getting really good at finding that good thing that happened in their day.  Wednesday we will be going to our second swim to survive lesson.  Take a minute and ask your child what they learned during their time with the instructors.

Learning Goals this week….

In mathematics, we will continue with learning about rounding numbers to the nearest ten and hundreds.  Something that we have been using is saying “Five and above give it a shove, Four and below let it go”.  We will look at wrapping this unit up by the end of the week and moving into adding and subtracting multiple digit numbers.  Students will also have an opportunity to explore another wonderful math site called Dreambox.  This can also be accessed at home, wonderful program that reinforces sense of numbers.

In Language Arts we will continue with our Daily Five stations and continue working on writing.

Students were given their first word wall words last week and will be given new ones to focus on this week.  We will have our first quiz on these words next week.

In Religion we continue exploring our new resource “Growing in Faith, Growing in Christ”.  We have been discussing ‘What is a Catholic Community and what gifts we bring to these communities?’.

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

Happy Thanksgiving!!!!  I hope everyone had time to count their blessings while enjoying time with family and friends. I’m thankful for my wonderful team!

In Language, the students are working on a media presentation on Digital Citizenship.  They are demonstrating their knowledge on being a good Digital Citizen and sharing it with a given audience. We will also be focussing on the reading strategy, Self – Monitoring.  Students will set personal purposes for reading and develop self-awareness about comprehension.  Students will be encouraged to be active readers and ask themselves questions to monitor their understanding.

In math, students will be tested on their understanding of place value.  This is an invaluable skill the students will use in all strands and in everyday life.  Our next focus will be on adding and subtracting larger numbers and using these skills to solve a variety of problems.

Our extended French class enjoyed a wonderful ballet presentation at the Rosemount library. They will be participating in a gym program, which includes a variety of fitness activities including dance and low organized games, offered by goodlife fitness, beginning this week.

Our Rosary program began last week and will continue on the first Wednesday of every month. This is a wonderful program that compliments our religion curriculum.

The homework books have been sent home with students to be used to prepare for their book talks.  They should be reading their book daily so that they have plenty of time to practice for their presentation.

So much going on – it’s all good!!!

Have a great week!

Kindergarten News for October 3-October 6, 2016

We are off to a great new start!  We will be welcoming Mrs. P to our KP 1 classroom this week.  Mrs. P. is our new Early Childhood Educator.  We will be balancing class sizes on Monday and notifying parents of any changes.  We are looking forward to having an additional staff member in the Kindergarten Program and we are very excited for our students as they will be using our classrooms in a great new way and making new friendships!

We had a great week participating in the Terry Fox Run!  Our students were very engaged during the pep rally and during our walk around the schoolyard.  We are proud of the difference they are making and thank you for all your amazing contributions to this great cause.

This week we will be participating in our Thanksgiving Mass on Thursday October 6, 2016 at 9:00 am. We will walk over to St Anthony Church for mass with Father Felix.  We look forward to our first celebration at the church with our whole school community.  Parents are most welcome to join us!  We will be preparing for mass by discussing what we are thankful for and making turkey crafts.  We will also be learning a new prayer for Thanksgiving and  “Thank you Lord ” song.

In French, we have been learning the words for members of our family
such as maman, papa, frère, and soeur.. Some students also printed
French words on their family trees.

In Math, we are continuing to focus on counting up to 5 and using a
five frame to recognize five as 4 and 1, 2 and 3. Please encourage
your child to count objects as much as possible. Then trick them by
taking some objects away and asking them how many are left.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families!
There is a PD Day on Friday and we are closed Monday for Thanksgiving!
Enjoy the week,

Our Terry Fox Walk was a great success!  Thanks to all families who supported this wonderful endeavour! Our literacy work is well under way as the children work on both independent reading and reading with a partner. Their work with weekly word wall words is already paying off. The children show great pride (and some astonishment!) when they recognize these words in the context of their daily reading tasks.  This coming week we welcome Maruca, a visitor from St. Anthony parish. She will visit the first Wednesday of each month and talk about the importance of prayer in our lives, particularly praying the rosary.  An October newsletter and homework calendar will be sent home this week. Please check your child’s agenda for these items. A reminder that library books are due every Wednesday.  On Thursday, October 6, we will celebrate our Thanksgiving Mass at 9:00 a.m. at St. Anthony Church.  You are welcome to attend!  As Thanksgiving approaches we will be focusing on how we appreciate the gifts of God’s creation.  Happy Thanksgiving to the all “Wonderful Ones and Terrific Twos” and their families!

Grade 3 News From Mrs. Manzoli’s Class…

Happy October! September feels like a blur, it sure flew by with the starting of the school year and just having the time to settle back in. Well, here we are October, one of the most beautiful months with all the vibrant colours of fall and the celebration of Thanksgiving. A time where we can sit back and enjoy all the beauties that God has given us with family and friends. With that we look forward to a short week of school this week with a PD day for students on Friday and Thanksgiving Day next Monday. This week we also continue with our Friends for Life on Tuesday. Last week we looked at how we can relax our minds by thinking of our happy place and how to focus our thoughts on that place where we can have calm minds. Ask your children where their happy place is. This week we also look forward once again to the lovely ladies who will be coming every first Wednesday of each month to teach the students how to pray the rosary. Wednesday also marks our first swimming day at Plante Bath. Please remember to pack a bag with a swimming suit and towel. On Thursday we will be celebrating our first school Mass at St. Anthony Catholic church beginning at 9:00, please join us as we celebrate the beginning of our school year and giving thanks for Thanksgiving.

Learning goals this week…
Great job for all the students who remembered to complete their homework. This week students will be handed out homework to be completed for October. It is very important to establish homework routines for children in order to prepare them for the future grades. Children should be spending no more than 30 minutes a night on reading, writing and math. Homework should not be considered stressful or hard.

In mathematics this week we will continue with number sense and look at rounding numbers to the nearest ten and hundred. Students have also begun using their mathletics program to reinforce these concepts. Using this program at home is beneficial.
The website is www.mathletics.ca . ( username and passwords were handed out to the students to access their accounts).
In language we will continue with our Daily five stations and focus on writing. We will practice how to write proper sentences. Students will also be given out their first Word Wall Words. They will be written in their agendas to practice at home too. In Reading, we have been focusing on using our fix-up strategies when we come to words we don’t know. We have also explored making connections when we read. Another wonderful web site to use at home for reading is www.razkids.com.

Reminders:

En français, we will work on the vowel sounds “e” and “i”. The comptines are “Isabelle Iguane” and “Reno Renard”. I have put 2 additional stories in their French duotangs that focus on those letters sounds. Word wall words for the month will be put in their agendas. Please continue to read the mini-books I send home and practice the word wall words.

En Sciences Sociales, we are finishing the “All About Me” unit this week. Children are learning family members, address, phone number, etc.. in order to introduce themselves and for safety reasons. We are also learning about map concepts.

4ième/5ième année (Immersion)

En Sciences, this week we are continuing to work on food chains. There will be a quiz on Thursday about what they have learned to date. It’ll be multiple choice on “Kahoot”.

There is also 2 great opportunities for your child: Makerspace on Monday during lunch is an excellent chance for them to learn how to code, build and create. I have already brought them during science class. The second is a Coding workshop, also during lunch.

En Sciences Sociales, we are finishing are passports about the different provinces and Territories. We will begin to study Canada’s Naturel Resources in all of the different Physical Regions of Canada.

En Français, we have begun the unit “Au Restaurant”. Word wall words this week will be given to your childMonday for the month. Most words focus on the sounds “in, im, ain, aim, ein”, “ou” and restaurant vocabulary. The unit project has been introduced and the outline is on-line. Groups have begun creating their menus at school.

En Arts, we have studied the lines in Art. We had a quiz about the vocabulary already. We will create one more work of Art this week and move on to Drama and study “Le Petit Prince”.

Au Gym, Gaelic Football will be our focus for 3 weeks. The Ping-Pong club will begin soon and we have gotten a head start on it. Hope to see your child join the club in November.

Merci,

M. Chartrand

Green Club News September 2016

It’s the start of a new school year and our Ontario EcoSchools program is kicking off! Last year we achieved GOLD status. Way to Go, St. Anthony Catholic School. The Ontario Eco-schools’ mission is “to nurture environmental leaders, reduce the ecological impact of schools, and build environmentally responsible school communities.” There are many registered Ontario EcoSchools across the province and St. Anthony Catholic School is excited to be part of this community!

We have already created a Green Club this school year. This club is made up of a team of passionate students and staff! Our first school event was the Fall Tim Hortons Cleaning the Capital Event. On Friday, September 23, 2016, St. Anthony Catholic School participated in this annual event as part of our commitment to the environment and school greening project. Staff and students gathered garbage and composting materials in and around our school grounds. Ask your child about this great event!

Mrs. Rupnik’s Primary Language Class

This week we will talk and write about all the wonderful people and things we are thankful for and create a class bulletin board to show we are ‘filled with thanks’. Consider carrying this conversation over to your home.  In our Social Language program, we will focus on starting a conversation with a friend.  The October homework calendar starts on Monday, October 3. Please help your child to complete the daily activities.

The morning class will also continue to practise for our Thanksgiving mass scheduled for Thursday, October 6, 2016 at 9:00am. The mass will be held at St. Anthony Parish.  Join us if you can!

Remember communication is the key to success! This is particularly true in your child’s situation where two schools are involved.  I work closely with the homeschool team (resource teachers and classroom teachers) throughout the school year.  If you have any questions or concerns about the Primary Language Class, please do not hesitate to contact me.  You can jot a note in your child’s All About My Day duotang/agenda or call St. Anthony Catholic School at 613-235-0340.  Wishing you the joy of a happy family and best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving.

A Note from our Speech-Language Pathologist: Hello St. Anthony’s Language Class students and parents! I am the Speech-Language Pathologist consulting in Mrs. Rupnik’s class this school year. I have visited the class and feel fortunate to have the opportunity to work with such wonderfully curious and hard-working students. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone in the class and help support the students’ learning. Wishing everyone a happy return to the school year! Sincerely, Theresa Patenaude

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

September went out on a high note!  The Grade 4/5 Class along with the 5/6 class took the lead during our 5th Annual Terry Fox Event as we enjoyed a wonderful energetic walk with the entire school to Dow’s Lake on a beautiful fall day.  All in the name of Cancer research!  It was extra special with a former St. Anthony student, Sam, joining us for this event.  He was the inspiration for St. Anthony Catholic to begin our Terry Fox event. Sam was diagnosed with the same type of Cancer as Terry Fox.  He is our survivor and has not missed an event! We exceeded our goal of 375 dollars and enjoyed the grade 6 makeover of our good sport principal, Mr. McGuire – it was quite the transformation!  The students also enjoyed extra recess. It was an event certainly worth celebrating!

In Math, we continue to look at large numbers. We have been rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10 000.  We will use rounding to estimate answers to addition and subtraction problems.  Students should also continue practicing their multiplication facts up to 5 so that they may recall them easily.

In Language, the students have been involved in several activities during our digital citizenship lessons.  Great discussions have taken place and students have demonstrated understanding of how to be a good digital citizen.  All the students have chosen a book for their book talk.  The focus right now is to read the book. I will return their homework book on Monday so students can use the book talk guide and complete the outline as they read their book.  This will help them prepare for the book talk which we will start presenting on October 24th.

It has been a wonderful month of learning and of building a strong “team” environment within our grade 4/5 class.  I strongly believe…. Together Everyone Achieves More!

Reminder- Friday is a PD day – no school

Monday, October 11 – Thanksgiving – no school

Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends!

Here we come October!

Ms Colaiacovo’s Class Blog Post
Phew!!! We just passed another incredibly busy week in grade 5/6 …. but we did it in style! Our 5th Annual St. Anthony School Terry Fox event was held on Tuesday and was met with great enthusiasm by all students in the school. Inline image 1The grade 6 students were a big part of the wrap-up assembly, as the students had the responsibility of “making over” Mr. McGuire for his grand entrance to the rest of the school and our honoured guests. Inline image 2 Everyone did their part to make him quite lovely and it did not disappoint! Inline image 3 Inline image 4
Wednesday brought a wildly successful boys soccer tournament at St. Gemma school.
Inline image 5
Cross country tryouts and practices took place all week for this coming Wednesday’s Board Meet. Please remind students to dress appropriately for all weather conditions and to bring plenty of water.
We are wrapping up our place value strand of math with a quiz on Monday and will continue with number sense, with focus on adding and subtracting whole and decimal numbers. Students have demonstrated great insights regarding responsible digital citizenship thus far, and we shall finish Samaritans on the Digital Road this week.
A reminder that Papa Jack popcorn will be sold by our class again this Thursday ($1.00 per bag). Our first sale was enthusiastically received, so we hope to keep that momentum going. Another reminder that Friday is a PD day for students. Enjoy your 4 day weekend and a blessed and happy Thanksgiving to all!
