Our schoolyard reconstruction is coming along well – we are in the planning stage and will start work this summer.  In the meantime, we will be refining our drawings to fulfill the expectations of the school board and Aviva – this will be an entirely new yard!!

Teacher Notes for the week of February 8 – 12

Ms. Myers’ Grade 1 class

The “Wonderful Ones” enjoyed participating in our school-wide “Winter Walk” last Monday…even though it felt more like a “Spring Walk!”  We are looking forward to our trip to the Mill of Kintail Conservation Area, this Thursday, February 11, however, given the recent weather conditions, the trip may have to be postponed or cancelled. A note will go home on Wednesday to confirm that we are still going. Please check your child’s agenda on Wednesday.  In math we continue exploring addition and subtraction, focusing on strategies such as “counting on” and “counting back” from the larger number. Wednesday, February 10th  is Ash Wednesday. This marks the beginning of the Lenten season. We will be focusing on how Lent is a time to pray, share, and love as Jesus taught. It seems that this week is one of “beginnings” as many of the families in our community will celebrate Lunar New Year!  We will be learning about some of the traditions associated with this celebration.  As Valentine’s Day approaches we will be sharing stories of friendship and renewing our commitment to our “Class Promise.” For those who wish to participate, we will exchange Valentines on Friday, February 12th. A list of classmates can be found on the back of the February newsletter sent home last week. Have a great week and enjoy a wonderful “Family Day” weekend!

Ms. Moga’s Grade 2 class

February is off to a great start in grade 2! We ended the week with our “I Care” presentation. The students did a great job of reading their parts and being a part of some photos in the slideshow.

This week, our trip to the Mill of Kintail is scheduled for Thursday. However, given the warmer weather and melting snow, it is a possibility the trip will be cancelled. You will receive notice on Wednesday letting you know if we are going or not.

In math, we are continuing with geometry. The students are working on identifying and classifying 3D figures.

In language, we are beginning explanatory (informative) writing. This is similar to descriptive writing, but focuses more on the how and why of something (e.g. how elevators work, how birds fly). We will read texts that helps us write explanations.

In science, we are continuing to explore simple machines, focusing on the screw and wheel and axle this week.

In art, our “Symmetry Selfies” were a big hit last week. The students all did an amazing job! This week, we will make a symmetrical design using pattern blocks.

Lastly, Valentine’s Day is next weekend. I will provide a list of student names from our class if your child wishes to hand out valentines. There will be time to hand them out on Friday.

Have a great week,

Ms. Moga

Our Winter Walk Day

Our Winter Walk Day

Mrs.Rupnik’s Class

This week, in the spirit of Valentine’s Day, we will complete our two-week writing project that is linked to our Social Language program.  For the past two weeks, the students have been taking turns writing friendly messages about each other on handmade Valentine hearts.  On Friday, we will share these messages.  This is a wonderful ‘feel good’ activity for all the students. The Valentine hearts will be sent home. I hope you take time to read these Valentine messages with your child. Enjoy the Family Day long weekend together. Please note: A class list will be sent home on Monday, February 8 for Valentine cards. (Valentine cards are optional.)

FDK News!

The FDK students are very excited about our new school-wide theme of “I Care”.  We participated in our assembly on Friday to see how we can make a difference by being kind, caring and respectful to each other.  We are catching students doing random acts of kindness!  We are already observing how quickly it is catching on and how students are paying it forward.
We will focus on Valentine’s Day this week.  Ask your child to sing to you one of our “love” songs.  The FDK students will have a chance to share their Valentine cards with each other on Friday.  A list of names will be sent home on Monday.  This is a great opportunity as a parent to see how your child recognizes the names of their friends and can print their names too!!
We are continuing our story sequencing by retelling stories using pictures and story props.  In Math, we continue to focus on 2D and 3D shapes.  We will have an Ash Wednesday celebration in the gym this week and it is Pizza Day on Friday!  We will also have a “Valentine Dance Party” on Friday afternoon for our FDK students!  We do love to dance!
We look forward to a great week and we wish you and your family a great Family Day Weekend!  (No school on Monday February 15, 2016)
The FDK Team!

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

Happy Chinese New Year! Many of our families celebrate this wonderful holiday that begins, this year, today. We will learn about some of the traditions that mark this special event. Best wishes go out to everyone!

On Wednesday, we will participate in our Ash Wednesday Liturgy. This is an important time in our Catholic faith that marks the beginning of Lent and our journey towards Easter.  Our class has been preparing for this, with many of our students taking an active part as either readers or gift bearers.  Parents are welcome to join us in the school gym at 9am.

On Friday, the students will have a chance to deliver Valentines to their classmates in anticipation of Valentine’s Day on February 14th. This year it falls during the Family Day Weekend. There will be no school on Monday! I hope you all enjoy a wonderful long weekend spending time with your families.

Your students brought home our class newsletter with lots of important information. Please take the time to review it with your child. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me at the school.

Your child will be bringing home his/her homework duotang today.  In it there is an outline for an exciting assignment they have been given.  They are to choose a children’s story book and practice retelling the story in an animated way with emphasis on clarity, pace and tone.  They will have two weeks to practice retelling their story.  Looking forward to hearing some entertaining stories.

In Language, we will focus on the reading strategy of sequencing.

Students will need to:

– recognize the importance of the order of events, directions, or steps

– link information in an ordered way, eg., retell a story, or directions in order

– recognize text signals that indicate that order is important e.g., signal words such as ‘first,’ ‘next,’ and ‘finally’.

The writing strategy that is linked to sequencing is procedural writing.  The students will have the opportunity to write the steps to something that is familiar to them or that they have experienced before.

In math, we continue to explore multiplication and division.  We will be using larger numbers to solve problems. Basic fact recall is very important for your child to practice regularly in order to have greater success.

Lots going on!!  Have a wonderful week!!

Robotics – what is out there?  We are purchasing more robot kits for our school – although we can’t get pieces as sophisticated as some of the ones in this video, we are making gains!
