St. Anthony Connects – The Week of November 17 – 21

Bring Curiosity Home

Something for us all to consider in this community – how can we make sure that our kids are able to use computers at home at night?  More and more programs are designed to be used at school and later at home.  What can we do to make the experience between school and home more seamless?

EveryoneOn is a national (US) nonprofit helping to connect households to high-speed Internet for as low as $10 per month.   This would be a great project for our community!

The Problem

Technology has transformed the way we do business, receive healthcare, and communicate with our loved ones, yet close to 1 in 5 Americans do not use the Internet. Disproportionately from low-income and minority communities, these populations remain isolated from our digital society.

Who We Are

EveryoneOn is a national nonprofit working to eliminate the digital divide by making high-speed, low-cost Internet service and computers, and free digital literacy courses accessible to all unconnected Americans. We aim to leverage the democratizing power of the Internet to provide opportunity to all Americans – regardless of age, race, geography, income, or education level.

Bringing Affordable Internet & Devices Into the Home

Through partnerships with local Internet service providers, EveryoneOn is able to offer free or $9.95 home Internet service in 49 states. We work with device refurbishers, so individuals and their families can purchase discounted devices, including $150 tablets and $199 laptops.

Free Basic Digital Literacy Training

We collaborate with libraries and nonprofits to advertise free computer & Internet courses at over 8,000 training sites across the country. By calling 1-855-EVRY1ON or visiting everyoneon.org, users can discover the closest class in their communities.

How can we do this for our community?  Can we share our computers with our families?

Teacher notes for this week:

Ms Rupnik’s class:  This week in the Primary Language Class, we will begin to work on descriptive writing. This form of writing focuses on using details (adjectives) to describe events, people, or objects.   We will explore different oral language activities first like the game ‘Guess What’, which involves students secretly describing an object, as descriptively as possible, and then have other students try to guess the object. We will also welcome a     new volunteer to our morning class, Ms. O’Connell.  She lives in our community and is a trained teacher.  We are grateful for this wonderful opportunity.

Ms Manzoli’s class:   This week we have a four day week with Friday being a professional development day for teachers. Thank you to the parents for coming out to parent teacher interviews. It was a pleasure meeting with you and discussing the progress of your children.
Please continue to monitor your children when using Razkids and Dreambox, these are awesome websites to enhance the children’s proficiency in reading and number sense.
Mr. McCulley our student teacher will continue to be teaching language this week. We are exploring descriptive writing and learning about the cultures of the diverse places the students come from.  In mathematics we are wrapping up with patterning and going to move into data management.
As the weather is changing, please ensure that the children come dressed appropriately.
