Principal’s report to school council

Hello everyone

Each month I will be making a report to school council on some of the important events and initiatives going on at St. Anthony.  Here is the report I submitted to council last night.

Principal’s Report to School Council  Wednesday, September 10

I am very happy to present my first principal’s report to the St. Anthony School Council.   I am thrilled to be here and the first few weeks have been a great learning experience.  I look forward to working with all the parents of the St. Anthony community.

1.  Communication – we are trying a variety of new communication methods to keep in contact with the St. Anthony.  We have started a Community Blog – St. Anthony Connects which is updated on a regular basis.  Important school news always goes on the blog first, then our web page, then our Facebook Page.  The advantage of the blog is that parents can follow it and receive updates whenever there is a new post – there is also a translate tool on the blog which should help parents in the community.  We are also using synervoice e-mail for those parents who have agreed to allow us to use their e-mail address.  I will spend time at the Program Night next week (September 16th) to go over these changes with parents.

2.  Toonies for Terry – we have started our fundraiser for the Terry Fox Foundation.  For the next two weeks, students can bring in their loonies, toonies, whatever they have to support cancer research in Canada.  Our goal is $300.00.  If we make our goal I have agreed to have my hair dyed.  If we get over $300.00 I will be dressed up as a princess for a day.

3.  Other programs.  We will be starting the milk program soon.  Ms. Pollock, our office administrator has agreed to run this program.  We will ask families to pay for the milk in three installments over the year rather than every month.  We will also be sending home flyers for two Learn to Play programs – Squirmies and Gamepack a sports program.  Squirmies, an arts and crafts program will cost $65.00 for 8 weeks and Gamepack will cost will cost $45.00.  There will be subsidies available for both programs to assist with costs where necessary.  Fun 2 Run is an exercise program associated with CHEO and HALO (Healthy Active Living and Obesity Program).  This program will focus on the junior students and will run for five weeks ending with a 3 km ghost run.  This is a pilot program designed to get kids to be and stay active.  The program will be designed by Michael Shashin , a trainer who has worked with marathoners, ultramarathoners, beginners to experts.  This promises to be a very interesting program for all our students.

4.  BYOD – We are working towards developing a Bring Your Own Device policy here at St. Anthony.  This too will be addressed during Program Night.  Once we are ready, students will be allowed to bring in smart phones, tablets or lap tops to use in the classroom.  All machines will be kept secure and locked using Techtubs which have been ordered.  We will only invite students to bring in their devices once the Techtubs are installed.  Students without personal devices will still have access to chromebooks, iPads, iPods and iPad minis  – these machines have already been distributed to the classrooms.  All students and parents will have to fill in an Acceptable Use form issued by the school board.  This form should be coming home soon.

Y Kids Academy returns to St.Anthony!

YMCA YWCA National Capital Region Youth Y Kids Academy

This is a FREE 12 hour healthy living program designed specifically for grade six students.  Upon successful completion of the program, the grade six students will also receive a FREE, one year, no strings attached membership to the YMCA-YWCA!

We will be dropping of information for distribution to all grade 6 students during the week of September 8-12.  All grade 6 students will be provided with the opportunity to become involved in this 100% FREE program.  It is so important to find ways to  reduce the barriers to physical activity by encouraging your children to join.  This is a one of a kind opportunity.

Registration is done at your local Y and no further paperwork is required of the school.  The Y encourages questions about the program and would be available to meet with students and staff to discuss the program in more detail.

We are looking forward to this great program returning to St.Anthony!

Here is a link with a more detailed description of the program and would invite you to visit any of our sites to experience  what the Y has to offer.

Kindergarten students find the gingerbread man!

JK-SK Sept 5

On Friday, the Junior Kindergarten students visited parts of the school in search of the gingerbread man. They got to visit the gym, learning commons (library), Ms. Pollock’s office, the office administrator, as well as Mr. McGuire’s office. He was finally found back in the classrooms where they all got to decorate their own gingerbread man.

St. Anthony has had a great week!

We had a great week at St. Anthony!  All our JK students are now with us.  We officially have 140 students!  The YMCA and extended day care programs are up and running and we have had our first assembly!  Next week, we will be offering a series of Learn to Play programs, including Squirmies – a great lunchtime program.

We showed the video below to all the kids today.  The message was simple – look at all the great fun we can have together when we treat each other with respect.  There is so much more we can do!

You will see at the end of the video that we already have lots of great events planned for the students.  This will continue as we move through the fall.  Our goal is to give each child the most well-rounded educational experience possible.

Next week on September 10th (Wednesday) we will be having our first School Council meeting – at 6:00PM.  Why not consider coming out?  Nothing spells success for a school like an active and involved school council.  Come on out and help us make this a wonderful year!

Mr. McGuire

Our first day at St. Anthony

We had a great day together at St. Anthony!  This morning, the kids were lined up ten minutes before school even started!

We all stood outside in the summer sun and realized we were ready for an exciting year.

Everyone found their class, no one got lost and the staff were very happy to see everyone again.  We have lots of new staff this year – including me – but that didn’t seem to matter at all.  St. Anthony has a system and it works really well.

Kids were playing soccer by the first recess.  The play structure was busy all day and kids loved being in the wonderful shade provided by our beautiful trees.

I took lots of photos – over 60 at last count.  Included in these photos is a class shot for every class in the school.  At the end of the year at the final slide show, the kids will get a chance to see how much they have changed in ten short months!  You can se all the flickr photos here.

We pledge to make learning visible for all of you this year – through this blog, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and Instagram.  We want to keep you involved and informed on what is going on at your school!

What’s coming up?

  • Extended Day Care starts tomorrow
  • JK Orientation continues
  • Our opening assembly will be this Friday at 2:15
  • Please remember to hand in verification sheets and the $20.00 student activity fee

Next few weeks

Our Program Night will be Tuesday, September 16

We will soon be looking to form our School Council for 2014-2015 – this is a very important volunteer position and we need as many people as we can get to fill a number of important roles.

So, on to day two!!

St. Anthony Connects Monday, September 1

Tomorrow is the first day of school. Make sure you sons and daughters get a good sleep tonight!

Every month, we will add the Faith and Fun Calendar that is put out by the School Board. This is a resource for parents to use at home every day of the month.

See you all tomorrow!

September 1: Prayer Power

I thank you for this Labour Day

holiday. I thank you for this time

when I can choose to get added

rest, or added fun, or added time

to catch up on necessary chores. Lord,

this is also a great day for reflection.

This is a day to thank you for the many

gifts and talents that you have given me

to serve you and serve others. Amen.
