Teacher Notes for this week:

Ms. Rupnik’s Primary Language Class

Welcome back everyone! This upcoming week, we will revisit ‘recount writing’ in our journals.   Our Social Language activities will focus on knowing how you feel. We will also review the concept of big deal/little deal.  Remember to keep helping your child with the homework calendar. When you support your children’s homework routine, you help them do better at school.

 Ms Myers Grade 1 Class

This week we look forward to our visit from the Scientists in Schools program. Wendy Decker, our scientist, will guide us through five learning centers where the students will explore different aspects of energy in our lives. On Friday, the whole school will participate in Earth Hour – we will work without using any electricity from 10:00-11:00 a.m. During this time we will brainstorm for ways we can conserve energy at home and school. In math we will focus on how we measure time – beginning with

days, weeks, months, years, hours, and minutes. Real life opportunities to connect daily/monthly activities in your home with calendars and clocks help build your child’s sense and concept of time.

The “Wonderful Ones” will be leading the Morning Announcements this week. If your child has been asked to say a prayer, please have them practice reading it aloud to you in preparation.

Dans la classe de Mr. Chartrand:

In French, we will finish the “au/eau” this week. The two stories are (“Pauline

Sauterelle” and “Que c’est beau, que c’est beau!”) can be found on their google

accounts.

In reading, we are reading “C’est le printemps – Grade 1’s”. The grade 2’s will focus

on “la vie sur l’étang – the life cycle of a frog” and we will also read “Les graines

poussent”.

In the classroom, students will be Benchmarked and tested for the word wall words.

We will see the last of the word wall words in April and MayJune will be a review.

We will continue to practice book concepts and comprehension.

The words wall words for this week are:

– trois(three) avoir(to have) être (to be)

dire (to say)

* Please practice the words at home..

Grade 4 (Immersion)

We will finish are two online labs this week and then finish studying the different

uses of rocks in society’s past and present. The summative task will be the final

The word wall words this week are: OUTSIDE, AGAIN, KNEW, WRITE, HURT
In Math, we will continue to work with money. At home, you can provide your child with several coins and have them make different amounts. The grade 1s are learning to make change to 20 cents, and the grade 2s are learning how to make change to $1.00. The students seem to be enjoying this Math unit! In language, we will be writing our Narratives this week. I encourage the students to talk about their ideas at home and come to school with many ideas! (ie, characters, setting, problems, solutions) Homework folders are due this week. Pizza orders and milk orders are also due by the end of this week. We are still continuing to collect food items for our Lenten Project. The support thus far has been great! Many thanks to all the parents! I hope everyone had a blessed and restful March Break! Welcome back and welcome SPRING!!!

Teacher Notes for the Week

This Week in PLC – Ms Rupnik

This week in our Primary Language Class, we will start work on new vocabulary for the season of Spring and Easter.  The concept of big deal/little deal will also be discussed as part of our Social Language activities.  This concept helps students differentiate what is important from what is less important so that they can be less anxious about situations of lesser importance and take seriously situations of greater importance.  Enjoy your March Break!  Remember repetition reinforces learning.  Ten to fifteen minutes a day can really help, whether it’s reading a favourite book together, measuring ingredients in the kitchen, or writing a shopping list.

Ms Myers’ class – grade one

As part of our Lenten journey, we have been focusing on the story of the Good Shepherd (John 10:2-5, 11, 14-16). The children were able to make connections and talk about how God is like our shepherd, guiding us gently and always caring for us. At our recent school assembly, a representative from the Shepherds of Good Hope mentioned that we are also like shepherds as we gather donations to help feed those in need. The students were able to see what an important role they play by bringing in even one single can of food, so thank you, again, for encouraging your child to participate in this endeavor. This week the focus for our Lenten food drive is condiments – things such as peanut butter, jam, mayonnaise, and vegetable oil.

In math, we will be wrapping up our geometry unit by exploring 3-dimensional shapes and moving into how we measure time….I hope everyone remembered to turn change their clocks this weekend….springing forward by 1 hour!!

Don’t forget to check out the many activities offered in our community over the March Break period – Rosemount Library, Plant Bath, and Jack Purcell Community Centres are all great places to spend some free time!  Enjoy!

This week’s word wall words will be: QUIT, QUICK, KICK, COULD, WOULD

We had a guest reader last Friday and the kids loved it! We will make a mural for Libby Redribbon by coloring autographed pictures from Julie Astier, author of the Libby Redribbon series. We are going to read more Fairy Tales this week and work on creating our own narratives! We are moving on to learning money concepts in math. I encourage the grade 2 students to continue practicing 2 digit subtraction questions with regrouping when they are finished their homework. Lent is still upon us, and we will continue to accept donations of goods for our Lenten project! Thank you for all of your support thus far! Our class will be reading the morning prayers this week. A few of the students forgot to bring their library books back last week. We have library every Monday afternoon, and the students should bring back their books for Monday. This is our last week before March Break and the weather looks to be getting warmer. It may be almost time for us to wear our rubber boots! Let’s have a fun filled week!

EARTH HOUR 2015 ST. ANTHONY CATHOLIC SCHOOL

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Earth Hour is an international event usually held on the last Saturday of March between 8:30-
9:30pm. During this hour, people around the world turn off their lights in support of addressing
climate change.

At St. Anthony Catholic School, we will be participating in Earth Hour on Friday, March 27,
2015 from 10:00-11:00 AM by powering down and turning off or unplugging all non-essential
lights, computers, and other electrical devices. During this hour, students will create and post
class pledges to commit to reducing their energy consumption beyond the hour.

In addition to our school Earth Hour event, we encourage students to take this message home
and as a family, participate in Earth Hour on Saturday, March 28, 2015 from 8:30-9:30 PM. By
reducing and conserving our energy use we are helping to reduce the amount of air pollution
in Ontario caused by the burning of fossil fuels to generate electricity. In fact, the air quality in
Ontario has improved in recent years because of these types of actions.

Thanks for your support in this worldwide movement to raise awareness about climate change
and protect our planet!

Sincerely,

The Green Team at St. Anthony Catholic School
