Questions to ask when considering a 1:1 program – how do we respond at our school?

Over the past week, I have written two blog posts about the implementation of Chromebooks at our school – here is an excerpt from one of them.  The posts can be reached here.

We are on the cusp of starting a limited 1:1 program at our school.  As we prepare, it is important to consider al sorts of questions – as we prepare, I want to consider answers to questions asked by Ann McMullan in the article:

The 10 questions to ask before you start your one-to-one program

McMullan shared 5 start factors that are keys to success for one-to-one programs:

  1. Start with “Why?” What are instructional goals you hope to accomplish?
  2. Start small, think big. “Find some of those teacher leaders and let them try out the devices,” she said. “Find out what the issues are with the network. But do think big; it becomes an equity issue very quickly.”
  3. Start with teachers first. It’s critical.
  4. Start the conversation across all departments.
  5. Do start: Go for it. Failure is part of the learning process.

We have been getting closer and closer to 1:1 especially at the junior level all year.  The key point for us is the teachers.  We have a group that is willing to experiment and learn.  We have had several group PD sessions during and after the school day to work on our understanding on how various apps – especially Google Apps can improve student learning.  We have had great results with Read and Write and are learning how to give more effective feedback with Kaizena. We are learning more about digital portfolios.  We are also learning new ways to deliver PD to staff.  For our last PD venture, we invited a teacher from our partner school to spend the day with teachers and classes to work on digital portfolios.  Having an experienced teacher with us in the classroom made a huge difference.

We need more donations – moving towards 15% funded!

Ms Myers Grade One class

We kicked off our science unit on Energy this past week with a great workshop facilitated by “Scientist Wendy” from the Scientists in Schools program.  We enjoyed having Mr. Cook’s grade 1’s join in the learning!

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week. We will be talking about what took place between Palm Sundayand Easter Sunday using pictures and symbols that are associated with these events. It is the final week for our Lenten Food Drive. This week we are collecting coffee, tea, and sugar, but any unexpired food donation is welcome. Thank you for your generosity!

An April newsletter and homework calendar will be going home this week. Please look for it in your child’s agenda!

Mr Cook’s Grade 1-2 class

This week’s word wall words will be: PLAYED, GAME, PEOPLE, CAN’T, WERE. We are moving from money onto geometry in math. We will learn about 2-D and 3-D shapes. At home, you can ask your children what different shapes they can recognize! In science, we are learning about movement. Last week we discussed ‘position words’ (in front, on, in, between, under, above etc…). The students will be finishing their narratives this week as well. We have been reading plenty of stories and even made our own as a class! This week, the grade 2’s will begin lessons in religion for their Reconciliations and First Communion. Homework calendars will be sent home Tuesday in your child’s agenda bag. We will be collecting coffee, tea, and sugar for our Lenten project this week. Again, than you for your support with this great charity! Friday is Good Friday and there will be no school. I hope that everyone has a blessed Easter weekend!

Ms Manzoli’s Grade 2-3 class

As we enter into Holy week the Grade 2/3 class will be participating in various activities centered on the Death of Jesus and the resurrection. We will be learning about the Stations of the Cross. We will also participate in the re-enactment of the last supper. We will be making Easter baskets and dying our Easter eggs to enjoy over our Easter Weekend. Since this will be a short week with Friday being Good Friday, there will be no homework assigned.

Teacher Notes for this week:

Ms. Rupnik’s Primary Language Class

Welcome back everyone! This upcoming week, we will revisit ‘recount writing’ in our journals.   Our Social Language activities will focus on knowing how you feel. We will also review the concept of big deal/little deal.  Remember to keep helping your child with the homework calendar. When you support your children’s homework routine, you help them do better at school.

 Ms Myers Grade 1 Class

This week we look forward to our visit from the Scientists in Schools program. Wendy Decker, our scientist, will guide us through five learning centers where the students will explore different aspects of energy in our lives. On Friday, the whole school will participate in Earth Hour – we will work without using any electricity from 10:00-11:00 a.m. During this time we will brainstorm for ways we can conserve energy at home and school. In math we will focus on how we measure time – beginning with

days, weeks, months, years, hours, and minutes. Real life opportunities to connect daily/monthly activities in your home with calendars and clocks help build your child’s sense and concept of time.

The “Wonderful Ones” will be leading the Morning Announcements this week. If your child has been asked to say a prayer, please have them practice reading it aloud to you in preparation.

Dans la classe de Mr. Chartrand:

Grade 1/2

In Social Studies, we are continuing to focus on comparing Canada to other

countries around the world. The Grade 2’s will be presenting their Country Projects.

Grade 1’s are introducing their home and it’s location on a map and also working on

Community Helpers.

2015-03-22_1505

In French, we will finish the “au/eau” this week. The two stories are (“Pauline

Sauterelle” and “Que c’est beau, que c’est beau!”) can be found on their google

accounts.

In reading, we are reading “C’est le printemps – Grade 1’s”. The grade 2’s will focus

on “la vie sur l’étang – the life cycle of a frog” and we will also read “Les graines

poussent”.

2015-03-22_1506

In the classroom, students will be Benchmarked and tested for the word wall words.

We will see the last of the word wall words in April and MayJune will be a review.

We will continue to practice book concepts and comprehension.

The words wall words for this week are:

– trois(three) avoir(to have) être (to be)

dire (to say)

* Please practice the words at home..

Grade 4 (Immersion)

We will finish are two online labs this week and then finish studying the different

uses of rocks in society’s past and present. The summative task will be the final

In Math, we will continue to work with money. At home, you can provide your child with several coins and have them make different amounts. The grade 1s are learning to make change to 20 cents, and the grade 2s are learning how to make change to $1.00. The students seem to be enjoying this Math unit! In language, we will be writing our Narratives this week. I encourage the students to talk about their ideas at home and come to school with many ideas! (ie, characters, setting, problems, solutions) Homework folders are due this week. Pizza orders and milk orders are also due by the end of this week. We are still continuing to collect food items for our Lenten Project. The support thus far has been great! Many thanks to all the parents! I hope everyone had a blessed and restful March Break! Bell Time and Walk Zone Review – FINAL

In 2012, based on recommendations from the Ministry’s Efficiency and Effectiveness Review, OSTA began its transformation project to harmonize walk zone maps and re-align bell times throughout its system. The first step was to create new policies governing how these steps were to be undertaken, including the consultation and approval process for each part of the project. The result was the Bell Time Management Policy T19, an amendment to the Transportation Services T14 procedure for standardized hazard criteria and assessment methodology and the Consultation Policy G14. This past year, OSTA has conducted consultation with its internal and external stakeholders to get feedback on proposed bell time changes and new walk zone maps. Twenty-five consultation sessions were held at schools throughout the city to collect feedback from April to June 2014. An electronic survey was also made available on OSTA’s website along with information regarding OSTA’s transformation.OSTA took the feedback it received from school communities and revised its recommendations.

Individual concerns regarding safety were carefully evaluated and/or re-assessed, and numerous changes were made to walk zones as a result. In addition, some schools were removed from the bell time review due to various circumstances unique to those school communities. On November 10 2014, the OSTA Board of Directors approved bell time changes of 10 minutes and All changes to be implemented for September 2015 under. On January 27 2015, both the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board and the Ottawa Catholic School Board approved bell time changes of over 10 minutes. This was the final step in the approval process.

Please go to www.ottawaschoolbus.ca/policies/transformation for more information regarding this project.

After reviewing the feedback from the Public Consultation Sessions held last Spring, OSTA has identified areas where there are legitimate traffic safety hazards that present a barrier to children walking to school.  Listed below are the FINAL walk zone maps for each school, highlighted in red, which use the same distance measurement for both school boards, and which include a standardized set of walking hazards. A summary of the decision-making process can be found in blue, under selected school communities.

Further information about any changes made for the upcoming 2015-2016 school year will be sent to your child’s school months prior to the changes. Please keep an eye on our Transformation Project webpage for more updates.

1.  Programs:  Our winter/spring programming is about to begin.  Here is a breakdown of what we have scheduled:

  • Little Horn Theatre:  Audrey Lemieux will be starting a music program with all our students starting January 21st.  The music portion of Little Horn will continue on to February 27th.  Jamie Vargus – the principal trainer of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet will be here January 19th to offer workshops to the junior (grade 4-6) students.

download

  • Y Kids Academy – This is a FREE 12 hour healthy living program designed specifically for grades five and six students.  Upon successful completion of the program, our grade six students will also receive a FREE, one year, no strings attached membership to the YMCAYWCA!      The program starts next week, but we are still looking for parent volunteers to help out.  Volunteers would simply help escort the students to and from the Y as we will be walking.
  • Table Tennis – Forms for this program will be handed out Thursday.  We will be offering this program after school (3:15-4:15)once a week for our students starting January 27 going to April 21.  The price of the 10-week program is $30.00. Subsidies available.

download (1)

  • Hip Hop Dancing – We  will also be offering a 10-week hip hop dance class (juniors only) on Wednesday at lunchtime.   Registration will take place on Wednesday, January 21.  The program will cost students $25.00 for the 10 weeks.  Subsidies available.
  • Young Rembrandts – The drawing program will begin again January 22 for 5 sessions.  Total cost:  $54.00 (full subsidy available)  Registration deadline is January 19th.

download (2)

2.  Pizza Days!  We will be running pizza days twice a month starting January 30th.  Forms for pizza have gone home and are due back January 20th.  This will be our school fundraiser for the year.  All profit will be going directly back into the classroom.

3.  Second session Milk Programbegins January 19th and goes to April 10th.  This program is intended as a fundraiser as well.  We will report on the proceeds from this year’s program to School Council in June.

4.  EQAO – we are starting to work on EQAO preparation now.  Teachers will be meeting over the next week to plan strategies to assist all students in preparation for the tests in May and June.  This school does extremely well in EQAO and we plan to continue our upward trend.  In reading and writing we continue to improve from grade 3 to grade 6.  In math, the trend is not as strong, but we have a team of teachers working on math instruction this year and this could have a positive impact on how are students do.  The most important thing is to start early to identify the students are risk in the areas of reading, writing and math.

EQAO-logo

5.  First Term Report Cards – these will be coming out February 13th.  We will not hold a formal meeting night this round, but parents can schedule a meeting with their classroom teacher to discuss the term I results.  Teachers will also be contacting parents where there are areas of concern.
