Teacher Notes for this Week

Kindergarten News for December 5-9, 2016

We are very excited to plan many great events for our Kinders. They are embracing all of our initiatives and as educators we are delighted to see how all of our efforts are so very much appreciated. A special thank you to our parent community for supporting us too!!

The Kinders were so reflective and attentive during the school’s first magical Advent celebration on Thursday. We look forward to attending the second celebration next Thursday

Thank you to all the parents who have sent in their donations of toiletries for St. Luke’s Table. Whatever small donation you can make is much appreciated.

On Friday they all had fun on their walk in the neighbourhood and they loved discovering where their stuffed animals were hibernating in the school yard. Of course, the delicious hot chocolate with marshmallows was enjoyed by all after coming in from the cold. Thank you for sending in a little stuffed animal to hibernate. Thank you to Ms. Ekich for joining us on our hibernation walk!

On Monday morning both classes will be going to Starr Gymnastics. Please make sure your child wears comfortable clothing.

Ms Myers’ Grade One-Two Class

It’s been a busy start to our Advent season in Grade 1/2! We have a special “Advent Calendar” in our class. Each day we are remembering people in our community during our morning prayer. If your name appears on our Advent calendar, expect to receive a special card to let you know that we have kept you in our prayers! We also participated in our first school-wide Advent liturgy. Our readers did a great job preparing for this celebration. During our second week of Advent together we will explore the story of the Annunciation. Thank you for all the donations we have received in support of St. Luke’s Table. Your generosity is most appreciated.

In math we will begin our unit on data management. We will focus on  collecting data (information) and sharing the information using graphs. A new December homework calendar and newsletter was sent home last week. A reminder that copies of these items can be found on our school website.  Have a great week!

Ms Moga’s Grade Two-Three Class

Homework Update: the students received their December homework calendars. Monday’s and Wednesday’s homework involves our weekly Word Wall Words; the students will be given time each Monday to copy them into their agendas. The weekend homework asks your child to do Raz Kids and Mathletics. Passwords were sent home again on Friday in case they were misplaced. I recommend 15 minutes of each program on both Saturday and Sunday. If you do not have access to technology, continuing to read each day is just fine.

Writing- The students have been working hard on researching their animals. They are ready to take their information from their graphic organizers and write their good copies.

Reading- Our next reading strategy is Visualization. This is when the reader creates a picture in his/her mind as they read. This helps the reader have a better understanding of the story. We will read some great fiction texts to help us learn about and practice this strategy.

Math- We will wrap up our unit on Data Management (graphing), and begin Addition and Subtraction. At this time of year, our focus is on addition and subtraction with 1-digit numbers, using various strategies (e.g. mental math, doubles, and fact families).

Science- We will begin our next science unit on Movement! This week we will describe positions of objects and different ways objects move (e.g.  turning, spinning, swinging, bouncing).

Religion- We are continuing our Advent journey. The students are enjoying our Advent calendar that reveals a little bit of the Christmas story each day!

Gym- We are working on throwing and catching. The students have practiced different ways to throw (overhand and underhand), as well as proper catching techniques. They have enjoyed playing games such as Dodgeball and “Sink the Ship” to reinforce these skills.

Have a great week!

A great big thank-you to Emy Nguyen (a junior student) and Ms. Lindsey Barr (author  of “Plant a Garden of Kindness”) for being our Guest Readers last week. Have a look at our pictures!

This upcoming week, we will work on vocabulary related to Advent and Christmas in oral and written form. We will focus on a book titled “There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Bell”. This book tells the story of a lady who swallows different Christmas items. Our lessons and tasks will include sequencing and retelling the story from memory. The Retelling Journal arrives home on Friday for homework. Be sure to sit with your child and listen to him/her retell this story. Then write the story in your child’s own words. Return the Retelling Journal to school on Monday, December 12, 2016.

We will also continue our work on descriptive writing. This week we will create graphic organizers to describe ourselves.  We will then transfer the specific details from the graphic organizers to paragraphs and create a new class bulletin board titled “The Best Part of Me”.

Before & After School

Our school yard has a new gazebo area.  The children have enjoyed the new structure, and it will definitely help them cool down during the summer program.  Also, a new play structure will be set up in the yard soon.  I think we will have a blast in our new school yard all year round.

We made finger print poppies and a poppy wreath to commemorate Remembrance Day. We also spent time with a guest speaker who works for the Canadian Armed Forces.  The children learned a lot about Canada’s role in peacekeeping.

Homemade Slime

One of the children’s favourite activities during EDP time is slime.  It is easy and simple to make at home.  You need:

·      1 tbsp of Metamucil with Psyllium (generic fiber supplement will also work as long as it contains psyllium)

  • 1 cup of water
  • Food coloring

 Instructions

  • In a large microwaveable bowl combine 1 tablespoon of Metamucil or similar with 1 cup of water and stir well.  You can also add a few drops of food coloring for rich coloring.
  • Stir the ingredients until everything is dissolved.
  • Then place the bowl in the microwave and heat on high until you start to see bubbles (roughly 2 minutes).  Continue to microwave the bubbling slime for one minute.  Then stop the microwave and stir.
  • Once stirred microwave again for two more minutes.
  •  Remove the bowl from the microwave and allow it to cool.  At this point the slime will still be liquid, but it will thicken as it cools.  Once it is completely cool it will be ready for play!
  • Be sure to check that the center of the slime is cool before giving it to kids.

Christmas Break (January 3 – January 6)

If there is enough interest, EDP will be open January 3 – 6, from 7 am to 6 pm.  Should the program run these days, the activities plan will be posted on the EDP parent bulletin board.                                                                                                                                                     (NOTE:  The last day of online registration for Christmas Break is December 9th)

New staff member

We have a new staff member for school aged children (Gr 2-Gr 6) in the afternoon.  Heather Mullan will be in Room 27 as of December 5th.

Reminders

We spend a lot of time outside after school.  Please ensure that your children are dressed appropriately for the weather.

This week was the first week of Advent. The grade 3 students worked hard to show love and respect to each other in preparation for the birth of Jesus. We also made an advent wreath together using cut outs of our hands to symbolize our community in the classroom.
We were lucky this week to get to go to Star Gymnastics on Monday. The students had so much fun and got some great exercise. We are all looking forward to getting to go back tomorrow morning!
The grade 3 students had two visitors in our class this week. The first is a small elf (named Elfie) who will stay with us until Christmas to make sure that we are all behaving. She is a very silly elf and does different things everyday. Make sure to ask your child what she got up to each day!
Our second visitor was Constable Callaghan from the Ottawa Police Service. The students got to talk and ask questions about what it is like to be a police officer. They also discussed safety at home, school, and at the park and talked about emergencies and what to do in situations.
Coming up this week:
Math – We will start looking at surveys and collecting primary data. This includes asking the right questions and how we can demonstrate this data.
Science – It is time to start looking at what forces can do and the different forces that can pull or push.
Language – We will continue on with our descriptive writing of food and move towards describing other objects.
Religion – This week we will celebrate the second week of Advent, so we will discuss how we can prepare for the coming of Christ. We will also attend the Advent mass on Thursday and put the flame on our second candle.
Art – Check out our winter art outside of our classroom!
Reminders for the week:
1. Star Gymnastics tomorrow (wear comfortable clothing!)
2. Spelling Check-In on Friday

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

The first full week of December brings with it lots of anticipation, excitement and joy as we journey closer to Christmas!  The students need to be reminded that as we prepare to celebrate Jesus’s Birthday we must continue to remain focussed and diligent in the effort we bring to all our schoolwork.

The students enjoyed our first visit to Starr Gymnastics where they were put through a variety of centres. They had to use different body parts and coordination which got their hearts pumping and lungs working hard, however it brought lots of smiles to the students’ faces.

In math, the students completed a variety of patterning inquiries where they were asked to organize their information on a t-chart.  We continue to focus on ways to organize our thinking and demonstrate our understanding through pictures, numbers and words. Students will have the opportunity to share their understanding of patterning with a unit test later in the week. Students should always be looking for patterns in their environment to see the relationship between what we learn in class and how it is used in the world around them.

In language, the students presented their second Book Talk.  It was great to see how excited the students were to present their book to their peers.  The students spoke clearly and demonstrated greater confidence sharing the information they had practiced. The variety of books that were read was also encouraging.  Well done!

The students were also given a reading comprehension where they were asked to demonstrate their understanding of a story they had read.  Many struggle with summarizing the story.  This is a skill we have been working on with the help of Mr. Moleski.  The students have been introduced to new tools available on the read and write app on their chromebooks that can help with summarizing.  Ask your child to show you their summary about the interesting frog we read about.

Thank you to all the families that have already sent in items for our Advent project in support of St. Luke’s table. It is all “Good News”!

Have a great week!

Together Everyone Achieves More!

Ms Colaiacovo’s Grade five-six class

Yet another busy week lies ahead and we look forward to moving ahead with our learning and activities. The grade ⅚ class must be, without a doubt, the fittest class in the school!  Last Monday morning we went with Mrs Troccoli’s ⅘ class to Starr Gymnastics and the students bounced, rolled and swung their way through an hour of challenging courses in the gym.

c1

On Wednesday the grade 6 students participated in their final session and “graduation” at the Y Kids Academy program. The students have benefited from both the healthy eating instruction and the physical activity components of this special program. Once again, we were complemented by YMCA patrons on how respectful and enthusiastic the children are. The students should feel proud that they represented St Anthony School in this way, I sure am!! The students will continue to reap the benefits as they were awarded a one-year membership to use the facilities at the YM/YWCA and will hopefully be inspired to adopt a healthy lifestyle mentality for life.

c2

We were moved by the beautiful music, prayers and symbolism as we celebrated the first week of Advent with the rest of the school community last Thursday. I encourage you to join us, if you can, for the next liturgy on Thursday, December 9 at 1:00 in the gym.

We look forward, in the coming week, to enjoying the December book talk presentations by the grade ⅚ students. Hopefully, your child has practiced for you and asked for feedback from you. We begin data management in math with “real-life” surveys and data collection. Our grade 6 afternoon group continues to explore space….okay, not literally, but from the classroom! We are putting the finishing touches on the Christmas drama presentation and will continue rehearsing this week.

As always, please support your child’s learning by encouraging good work habits by getting homework done promptly, by keeping appropriate bedtime routines, and by arriving to school on time.

Kindergarten News for October 31-November 4
Happy Halloween.  We wish all of our students a happy and safe Halloween!  We are having so much fun counting spiders, bats, pumpkins, and cats.  We have enjoyed having many real pumpkins in the room.  We are comparing, decorating, touching, weighing and asking many questions about pumpkins!  A great inquiry is happening on this subject!  We can not wait to carve many pumpkins on Monday!
Counting and Number Recognition

Counting and Number Recognition

We enjoyed the story “Monster needs a Costume”.  We are making connections to this story using our own ideas!  Many students raise their hands to share their ideas and connections.  We encourage everyone to have an opportunity to speak in front of the whole class!  Students are learning to stay on topic and to share relevant ideas about their own personal connections to a story.  At home, you can say…”This Story reminds me of…..”  Or “I have a connection..”  When reading a bedtime story.
A haunted house!

A haunted house!

In math, the students created their own Halloween patterns with stickers. They are also being introduced to the concept of weight by comparing the weight of a classmate to that of a large pumpkin. Some students measured their weight in a scale.
In French, they are learning about the four food groups and what foods are in each group. This is part of the Healthy Eating curriculum.
Please remember to send your child with a Halloween costume for our Halloween parade Monday morning.
Your child might request to include Halloween candy in their lunches. We ask that parents only include one treat in their lunch kits.
Thank you for sending your child to school ready for the weather.  Hats, mitts, splash pants/snow pants and warm boots are needed as we spend 40 minutes at lunch and approx 20 minutes at the end of the day outside!!
Congratulations to K1 class!  They are the St Anthony Superstars this week!  We love caring for others and hope it continues all year.  Our new theme is “I have Ideas” for November and December.

Ms Myers’ Grade One – Two class

Our trip to Valley View Farm was a great success!  The children enjoyed the feeding all the animals, finding their way through the corn maze, and choosing a pumpkin to take home. It was a great afternoon to enjoy the crisp autumn air!  Thank you to all those parents who were able to join us for this outing. We read a lot of pumpkin stories before going on our trip. Each one seemed to end with characters enjoying a pumpkin treat…so we felt we needed to do the same!  We made some delicious pumpkin muffins! The children enjoyed reading the recipe, measuring out all the ingredients, and stirring them altogether! The muffins were superb!   In the coming week there will be a few items to look for in your child’s backpack. A new homework calendar and November newsletter will go home early in the week (a reminder that copies of these items are also posted on the school website), as well, your child’s Progress Report will be sent home on Thursday.  As Remembrance Day approaches we will be talking about the importance of peace…in our classroom, our school community, and the world. In math we are working on the concepts of “more” and “less” (sometimes referred to as “greater than,” “less than”). At home have your child use their estimating skills to guess a number of objects (less than 100) and then count them out, checking to see if their estimate was more or less than the actual number. These kinds of activities help build your child’s understanding of quantity. Have a great week!

Mrs. Rupnik’s Primary Language Class

We will begin the Halloween week with new word wall words and drawing faces on naturally sweet but low in sugar fruit to create Clementine Pumpkins. Please take some time to read our class newsletter and the food pamphlet called ‘Facts on Snacks’ I will send home on Monday. This pamphlet can help you plan healthy snacks for school. Keep in mind that our school supports wastefree snacks and lunches. The children will also finish sequencing pictures of the pumpkin life cycle and writing about Halloween using their five senses.  The new homework calendars will be sent home on Tuesday, November 1, 2016.

Ms Moga’s Grade two-three class

What a great week in Grade 2/3 ! The students enjoyed our trip to Valleyview Farms; I think getting to take a pumpkin home was the overall favourite part of their trip. If you’re in the school, keep an eye on our bulletin board which will feature their recount writing about our trip to the farm.

Reading- We’re continuing to make connections while we read. Students will begin making text-to-text connections between two stories read-aloud in class. Making these types of connections helps students better understand what they have read, and also make predictions.

Math- We will continue our patterning unit. Students will learn about sorting by two attributes, as well as about growing patterns.

Science- We will investigate and explore Fish and Amphibians this week.

Religion- We are still working on our Digital Samaritan Unit. I am hoping to finish this unit by starting a “Good News” blog to be written by the students. I will provide more information about this as it gets started.

Have a great week!

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

Happy Halloween!! It’s scary that it is already the last day of October!! I look forward to seeing all the creative costumes being worn by our team…should make for an interesting and exciting day.  We will use the Halloween theme to complete a variety of activities in math and language.

Every student presented their Booktalk last week.  It was our first talk of the year and the students stepped up and put forth a solid effort. It was wonderful to hear about all the great books the students are reading and how happy they were to share their joy of reading with their classmates. As we look ahead to our next Booktalk we will focus on getting more creative with our presentations, speaking with greater confidence and choosing the most important parts of the book, while making connections to enhance the presentations.  Look for the rubric coming home in your child’s homework duotang Monday. Please sign and have your child return the duotang with the completed homework to school by Friday.

In math, we continue to work with addition and subtraction using larger numbers.  We are also solving problems involving decimals and using money inquiries to help make real life connections.  We spent quality time practicing subtraction across zeros.  Many students find this skill quite challenging. Please have your child practice these skills as they are extremely important across all strands of the curriculum. For homework this week students are required to complete the addition and subtraction activities on Mathletics by Friday.

In, Language we will work to publish our Dream paragraphs.  We are learning to revise our writing to help make our ideas clearer and more interesting.  As well, we are editing our writing to make sure we have capital letters, proper punctuation in the right places and correct spelling. This will be helped with the use of the read and write app on the Chromebook.

We will welcome Mr. Moleski into our class on Wednesday. He comes from the board and will work with us to help us use all the tools on our Chromebook which will also enhance our writing.

The students look forward to reading with their kinder buddies every Wednesday.  Too cute!!

In Science, we had Gord Hunter from Destination Imagination join us to challenge our students. They worked cooperatively to complete 3-minute challenges. It was exciting to watch them work as a team to find success.

The grade 4/5 Team were the proud winners of the superstars trophy for “Caught you Caring” the week of October 17th! Way to go Team!!

Have a great week!

Teacher Notes for this week

Kindergarten News for October 24-28, 2016

We are ready for a great week of learning in Kindergarten.  We have created new learning centers for patterning using natural materials.  Students are enjoying using leaves, sticks and rocks to create patterns.  They also love our Halloween patterning centers and are using pumpkins, bats, cats and ghosts.  We also started signing in everyday by writing our names.  We will be reading many Halloween stories this week and singing some Pumpkin songs!

In Math, the students will be counting Halloween items to ten and work on number recognition to 10. With the items they have counted, they will be making a witch’s brew.
In French, the students are sorting fruits and vegetables. This week they will be introduced to the sentence Je mange …. (I eat …) and asked to finish the sentence with a fruit or vegetable.
The Kindergarten students are invited to wear their costumes to school on MondayOctober 31.  The students will have the opportunity to tour the school in their costumes in the morning. Please refrain from sending any toy guns/swords to school. If needed, please send a change of clothing as the students will most likely want to wear their normal clothes for the remainder of the day.

Monday is Photo Retake Day.  Please let us know if you would like a retake done.  We will also have an Assembly for our new Catholic Graduate Expectation called “I have ideas”. We will be celebrating our waste-free Winners and our school sport teams!
Thursday we will have a Halloween Party at 4:00pm.  Our parent council will be putting on this great event.  All families welcome!

Ms Myers Grade 1-2 class

The season of autumn has provided us with many learning opportunities!  In science we have been inquiring about seasonal changes and the impact they have on living things. We read the story Possum’s Harvest Moon. Ask your child to tell you about this wonderful story – and some of the great “WOW” words they learned such as “harvest” and “snug!” On Monday we will work with Mrs. Manzoli’s Grade 3 class to present our next Catholic Graduate Expectation to the school – “I Have Ideas.” We will be considering things like: I have thoughts and opinions that matter; I share my ideas and respect those of others; I use my ideas to bring about positive change the way Jesus would want me to. On Tuesday we look forward to our trip to Valley View Farm! We hope to see pumpkins growing in the fields, visit some of the farm animals, and go for a wagon ride. Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather and has a healthy lunch packed for the day. It would be great if school t-shirts could be worn on this day. The Halloween party, hosted by St. Anthony’s Parent Council, will be held on Thursday, Oct. 27th in the gym from4:00-5:00 p.m. Parents must accompany their children to this event.  A reminder that October monthly homework is due back to school on Wednesday! We are looking forward to another busy week in Grade 1/2!

Reminders: Tuesday Oct. 25– Field trip to Valleyview Farm
         Friday Oct. 28– Pizza Day

Positive Notes- you may notice a coloured piece of paper in your child’s agenda- these are my way of communicating something positive I noticed in class. Look for them every now and then and ask your child why he/she received it!

Writing-  The students have finished their Terry Fox Walk recounts. They will write one more recount this week about our trip to Valleyview Farm.

Reading- The students enjoyed sharing their text-to-self connections throughout our read-alouds. They made fantastic connections that demonstrated their understanding of the story and not just surface connections or coincidences. We will continue to practice making and discussing text-to-self connections this week.
Math- We wrapped up our Money unit by playing games that had the students counting coins and showing money amounts with different coins. I strongly encourage you to practice counting money with your child at home- it is a tricky skill to master. We will touch upon it again during our Addition and Subtraction unit. This week, we will move onto our Patterning unit.Science- The students enjoyed learning about insects. Ask your child about the identifying characteristics of an insect! This week, we will investigate reptiles.

Religion- We will continue with the Digital Samaritan Unit.  We will discuss being part of an online community.

Have a great week!

Ms. Moga

Mrs. Rupnik’s Primary Language Class

This week, I will begin showing the children how ‘think-marks’ work.  ‘Think-marks’ involves stopping while reading and thinking about the story on a deeper level. Students will learn to use post-it notes to record their thinking when reading.  This allows us to talk about our thinking and to better understand the stories we read.

Remember to give your child chances to reread (listen to) the same story many times at home. This is the key to successful reading. To enhance comprehension, here are some questions you can ask your child.

  • What is the title of the book?

  • What do you think will happen next?

  • What is the problem in the book?

  • What do you want to learn?

  • When you were reading this part, what were you picturing in your head?

  • Describe the setting of the story.

  • Describe how a character changed throughout the book.

  • Tell about a part that you liked or disliked and tell why.

  • Does this book remind you of other books?

1re année

En français:

Lecture / Reading:  We are continuing to work on the sound “i” and “ch”.  We are reading the comptine “Mimi la souris” et “La Chouette blanche”.  Please continue to practice the word wall words at home.  If you need an extra copy, please let me know.  The words this week are:

regarde (look)   jour (day)    chaud (hot)  école (school)    j’aime (I like/love)

With a focus on Autumn and Halloween, the class is reading “l’Halloween de Maria” and the grade 2’s are also reading “Les animaux du Canada”.

Writing:   We are beginning to write sentences this week with the verbs:  J’ai and J’aime.

Ex.:  J’aime ma famille.  J’aime l’école.  J’aime les animaux.

J’ai 1 frère et une soeur.  J’ai un chien.

We have been also learning some Halloween thematic vocabulary such as:  socière, fantôme, bonbon, maison hantée, chat noir, etc… and we have also talked about which costume they will be wearing.  This week, we will describe our Halloween costumes.

Oral:   Students will continue to be presenting themselves in front of the class.  Some students can already answer all of these questions:  Comment t’appelles-tu?  Es-tu un garçon ou une fille?  Quel âge as-tu?  Quand est ta fête?  Où habites-tu?  Quel est ton numéro de téléphone?  Décris ta famille.  They will also describe their Halloween costumes.

In social studies, we are continuing to work on mapping concepts.  We will talk about Canadian symbols, animals and our flag.  Then we will focus on different countries in the world.

4ième/5ièmeannée (français Immersion)

In French, our word wall words are:

au moins          ainsi           plein de                 attendre     aller           repas

We are continuing to focus on the sound “in,im,ain, ein, aim” this week.  Please continue practicing using these words at home.  The word wall words are a great success.  We use them as much as possible in our daily conversations and all students are understanding their meaning.  We are finishing our “Au Restaurant” unit this week.  The skits/plays are due this Friday.  Some groups are finished a week early and have begun to memorize their lines and are beginning to collect and organize props.

In writing:

With all the activities last week, we did not have the time to work on the  explanatory writing about their favorite restaurant.  Students will pick a restaurant and explain why it is their favorite place to eat.

In Reading:

We will go to the library on Monday.  We will read our books, “Les Animaux, Les Animaux” in our reading groups.   Books will be given to each group to practice at home and at school.

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

We are starting the week with photo retake day and a bake sale organized by the grade 5/6 class to raise money in support of the devastating Hurricane that hit Haiti. Have your child bring in money to enjoy a treat while they support a  great cause.

Students went shopping during math inquiry...

Students went shopping during math inquiry…

The junior division enjoyed a wonderful field trip to the Museum of Nature.  We all learned lots about the Native Americans and the lives they lived. We participated in hands on workshops that included items from the first inhabitants of Canada.

In Language, the students have completed posters and slide presentations about Digital Citizenship.  As well, they are crafting a paragraph about their dream for their future.  We are working to write a good paragraph with a topic sentence, details and a strong conclusion.  The students are using the read and write app on their chromebooks to help edit their final draft before printing.

In math, the students used a variety of addition strategies to solve problems with larger numbers.  The students also worked cooperatively to solve an inquiry that required them to go shopping with a given amount of money, using store flyers, to determine the total cost and the change they would receive in return. Have your child help estimate and calculate the cost of items you buy when you go shopping.

t3

In science, my students have been learning about the human body. They are currently creating a healthy menu for a day while incorporating the 4 food groups.

Monday we will begin presenting our book talks.  The students have had plenty of time to prepare. We are looking forward to hearing all about  the great books the students have been reading.

Our Goodlife fitness instructor, Stacy,  will be back on Tuesday for another active gym class. Students are reminded to bring their library books back to school on Wednesdays.

Thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to send a note in your child’s “Reminder” book or contact me at the school.

Have a great week!

Mrs Colaiacovo’s grade 5-6 news

The grade 5/6 class, in an effort to mobilize the OCSB new spiritual theme, “Sent to be the good news”, will be hosting a bake sale on Monday, October 24, 2016. The students have decided that this will be an effective way to reach out in solidarity to the global community and more specifically, to the relief fund for the people of Haiti as they recover from the devastation caused by hurricane Matthew.

Grade 5/6 continues with our busy schedule of curricular and extracurricular activities. We were able to finish the book talk presentations this week and I was very impressed with the enthusiasm and creativity of many of the students’ delivery. Students also worked to finish up their Digital Citizenship presentations and I look forward to seeing those in the coming week. All of us enjoyed the visit to the Canadian Museum of History on Tuesday. Mrs. Troccoli and I both remarked that we, too,  learned a lot during the workshops were provided to our classes!

The girls and boys Gaelic football teams both performed with passion and sportsmanship and represented our school in a big way on Wednesday in the lovely, warm sunshine and on Thursday in the rain! The grade 6 girls began their Go Girls group on Thursday and by all accounts, everyone is enjoying this opportunity.

We begin the week with our bake sale on Monday morning to raise funds for the Haitian Hurricane Matthew relief fund. Thanks, in advance, for your contributions to this effort. This week we will also continue with the YKids Academy and students are reminded to bring their workbooks and YKids t-shirts with them.

Students arriving late to school are not only disrupting their own learning, but of the entire class. Students and parents are reminded of the importance of consistent and timely attendance at school, as most prepare to move on to the intermediate panel next year.

EDP News (Extended Day Program)

The children are slowly getting settled and are now aware of their routines before and after school. We are excited to have had a few new children join our EDP.

The children made their name tags, and these are on the back wall in Room 27. The kindergarten children traced their names using bingo dabs.

Upon the school-agers’ request, we have a Beta Fish in Room 27.  The children named it ‘Mememomo’.  SA children are feeding the fish every day, and clean the tank once a week according to their responsibility schedule.  It is a good opportunity to learn how to care for another living creature.

Kindergarten News for October 11-14

kp

We hope you enjoyed a wonderful weekend with the family!  Happy Thanksgiving to all!  We enjoyed our Thanksgiving Mass on Thursday and we spoke about many reasons to be thankful, we are thankful for our families, moms, dads, sisters, brothers, grandparents, the earth and the world.
We will be participating in our Grand Opening of the school yard this Friday at 9:30 am.  Students are asked to wear their blue St Anthony T-shirts on Friday.  All new JK and new SK students will be given a new St Anthony shirt this week.

We welcomed Mrs. P to our KP1 class.  We are so fortunate to have an amazing educator with us.  The students transitioned very well to their new learning environments.  We enjoyed making turkeys, new orange playdough, blue slime and making holes in real pumpkins!  A great week of many new learning centres!

 Ms. Myers Grade 1-2 class

This week we welcome Mrs. Mullins to our class. She will be our Home Reading volunteer. Every Wednesday the children will choose a book with Mrs. Mullins and bring it home to practice reading. Please check your child’s backpack this Wednesday for a Ziploc bag containing the book your child chose as well as a reading record sheet.  Each week Mrs. Mullins will listen to your child read their book and they will choose a new one to take home.  Both library and home reading books are to be returned on Wednesdays!  Hopefully this will avoid any confusion with returning items.  Thank you for taking the time to read with your child each night using books in from school or those you may have at home – especially if the books are in your family’s first language!  Click on the following link to read about benefits of reading aloud to your child – it’s simple and free! http://bit.ly/1I9OBRZ   Have a great week!

Ms. Moga’s Grade 2-3 class

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you enjoyed the extra long weekend with family. Fall is truly here- mornings are quite cool and students should have a warm sweater or jacket to help keep them warm.

Reminders: This Friday, October 14th, at 9:30am,  we will have our Grand Opening Celebration of our new school yard. Local media and community leaders will be present and all are welcome to join us.

Writing-  Students are working on their own recounts of our Terry Fox Walk. They are working towards using the elements of the Writing Process (Planning, Rough Copy, Editing/Revising, and Good Copy) to complete a finished piece of writing.

Reading- The students are now familiar with the Fix-Up Strategies for when they don’t know a word, or don’t understand what they are reading. Our next reading focus will be Making Connections. We will begin with Text-to-Self connections- these are highly personal connections that a reader makes between reading material and the reader’s own experiences or life. An example of a text-to-self connection might be, “This story reminds me of a vacation we took to my grandfather’s farm.”

Math- This week, we will shift our focus to money. Grade 2s will be working on identifying coins up to $1, as well as counting, representing and comparing the value of a collection of coins with a maximum value of $1.
Grade 3s will be working on representing and describing the relationships between coins and bills up to $10, as well as, counting and representing the value of a collection of coins and bills with a maximum value of $10.

Science- We continue to explore different groups of animals. This week we will learn more about birds. Ask your child what makes a bird a bird? Hint: It’s not their wings, or that they can fly!

Religion- We will continue to discuss the different parts of the mass. Having visited St. Anthony Church last week for our Thanksgiving Mass, the students should be able to connect the pictures in our book to what they saw last week.

Have a great week!

Mrs. Rupnik’s Class

Congratulations to all the students in the morning class for their fantastic job last week at our Thanksgiving Mass. I am so very proud of all your efforts and hard work.

Once again we are lucky to have a wonderful online reading program called Raz-Kids this school year! This is a reading program that we have already started to use at school but your child also has the opportunity to use it at home as well.  Raz Kids provides students with hundreds of eBooks at their reading level. It also helps children improve recognition of word wall words, enhance oral reading skills, comprehension, etc. Your child will take home their own personal login information this week.

Some helpful hints:

  1. Have your child work on only one book at a time.

  2. First have your child listen to the book.

  3. Then have your child read the book.

  4. Finally have your child take the comprehension quiz. If your child does not pass the quiz the first time, have him/her listen to the book again and then try retaking the quiz once more.

Did you know that October is Library Month? Throughout the month of October, Canadians everywhere will be celebrating libraries as pillars of our community. Consider visiting your local public library with your child this month.

This week, we have our first Guest Reader sessions. The children have read the riddles and together we are trying to figure out who is coming to read us a book. Ask your child about this special event!

In the Grade 3 Class this week…

manzoli-1

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. Hope you had a chance to enjoy God’s creation with family and friends.  We had a busy week last week with the beginning of swim to survive and our wonderful Thanksgiving Mass.  As we enter another short week there is lots to look forward to again.  We will begin with Friends for Life on Tuesday.  Students are getting really good at finding that good thing that happened in their day.  Wednesday we will be going to our second swim to survive lesson.  Take a minute and ask your child what they learned during their time with the instructors.

Learning Goals this week….

In mathematics, we will continue with learning about rounding numbers to the nearest ten and hundreds.  Something that we have been using is saying “Five and above give it a shove, Four and below let it go”.  We will look at wrapping this unit up by the end of the week and moving into adding and subtracting multiple digit numbers.  Students will also have an opportunity to explore another wonderful math site called Dreambox.  This can also be accessed at home, wonderful program that reinforces sense of numbers.

In Language Arts we will continue with our Daily Five stations and continue working on writing.

Students were given their first word wall words last week and will be given new ones to focus on this week.  We will have our first quiz on these words next week.

In Religion we continue exploring our new resource “Growing in Faith, Growing in Christ”.  We have been discussing ‘What is a Catholic Community and what gifts we bring to these communities?’.

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

Happy Thanksgiving!!!!  I hope everyone had time to count their blessings while enjoying time with family and friends. I’m thankful for my wonderful team!

In Language, the students are working on a media presentation on Digital Citizenship.  They are demonstrating their knowledge on being a good Digital Citizen and sharing it with a given audience. We will also be focussing on the reading strategy, Self – Monitoring.  Students will set personal purposes for reading and develop self-awareness about comprehension.  Students will be encouraged to be active readers and ask themselves questions to monitor their understanding.

In math, students will be tested on their understanding of place value.  This is an invaluable skill the students will use in all strands and in everyday life.  Our next focus will be on adding and subtracting larger numbers and using these skills to solve a variety of problems.

Our extended French class enjoyed a wonderful ballet presentation at the Rosemount library. They will be participating in a gym program, which includes a variety of fitness activities including dance and low organized games, offered by goodlife fitness, beginning this week.

Our Rosary program began last week and will continue on the first Wednesday of every month. This is a wonderful program that compliments our religion curriculum.

The homework books have been sent home with students to be used to prepare for their book talks.  They should be reading their book daily so that they have plenty of time to practice for their presentation.

So much going on – it’s all good!!!

Have a great week!

The grade 5/6 class continues a busy and exciting schedule. We wrapped up the place value strand of math with a very successful test and continue on with addition and subtraction facts. We finally finished Samaritans on the Digital Road and the students are in the process of producing their own presentations about being a responsible digital citizen.

Many students successfully competed in the Board’s cross country meet on Wednesday, with several showing in the top 50 finishers! The students actively participated in our beautiful Thanksgiving mass at St. Anthony church on Thursday; from altar serving, to audio-visual assistance, to a trio of delightful singers, to kindergarten church buddies; they did it all!

This coming week, the students will begin presenting their book talks in front of their classmates. Homework books will be sent home on Tuesday and must be returned by Friday. On Wednesday, we begin the Y Kids Academy program. We will be walking to and from the YMCA on Argyle St. and will depart eachWednesday at 8:35 promptly, so students must arrive at school on time!  In addition, students must also bring indoor shoes and a water bottle to the program.

Parents are invited and encouraged to join us for the grand opening of the “new” St. Anthony school yard on Friday at 9:30 a.m.We hope to share this exciting day with you!

Thank you for continuing to support your child’s journey of learning.

Teacher Notes for this week

.
FDK News for the week of June 20-24
Congratulations to all of our Senior Kindergarten class!  They participated in a beautiful celebration in the gym.  They sang songs, said a prayer, received their little diplomas, watched a slideshow and ate cake and watermelon!  Most importantly, the students celebrated with their families and they were so proud of themselves and the loved ones who came to show their support!  Thank you to all of our SK families!  Also a special thank you to Mr. McGuire, Ms. Ekick, Mrs. Rupnik, Mrs. Troccoli, EDP staff, the FDK team, our grade 2 helpers and the JK students for your support!

We had a special visit from a local paramedic named Brian.  He came to share some great safety tips and to explain the vital role that paramedics play in our community.  Students were very attentive and asked great questions!

We hope you enjoy the Father’s Day gift and you get to spend some quality family time together!  We have started to send many materials home, like blankets, extra clothes, student work, etc.  Please keep all items at home, now that we are approaching the end of the year, these items are no longer needed.
Thank you for returning all forms for our year-end field trip to the Sprinkler Park at Plant Bath on Tuesday June 28th, 2016.  We look forward to celebrating the end of the year with you!
Many events happening this week at St Anthony. Leaving Ceremony on June 22 at 9:00 am, all welcome to attend, Awards day on June 23, and Family BBQ on June 23rd starting at 4:30 pm.  Please check school website for more information.

Please remember to apply sunscreen everyday.  Students can bring reusable water bottles to school.  They can refill them in the classroom.  Also wear a sunhat!

Grade One Mrs. Myers Class

The “Wonderful Ones” welcomed 34 new “classmates” this week!!  Our chicks arrived!! It was all fast and furious!  They are certainly the “talk of the town!” We were fascinated as we watched them break out of their shell! We’ve enjoyed holding them, watching them, and most of all, listening to them!!  The children have been learning how to be good “hosts” as all the classes have come through to see our little “darlings!” It has been a great opportunity to share our learning (the grade ones feel they are “eggsperts!!”) – and also to share the joy of witnessing God’s amazing creation!  The chicks will remain for a few days this week and then we will bid farewell. Even though the chicks have taken over our classroom, we will do our best to keep up with all our other learning!  In math this week we will explore probability – predicting what might happen based on our experience. We will use words such as “possible,” “ sometimes,” “always,” and “never,” to describe things we see and do. On Monday, Jennifer Johnson from Rosemount Library will be visiting to tell us about the wonderful programming that the Ottawa Public Library provides through the summer months. We look forward to seeing families at our school B.B.Q. taking place on Thursday evening after school.  Have a great week!

Important Dates: Thursday, June 23, 2016— Awards Ceremony
Thursday, June 23, 2016–  Family BBQ (4:30- 7pm)

We had a great week in grade 2 last week! Welcome to the home stretch! Summer has arrived and it has brought the heat! Please remember to dress your child appropriately and send a reusable water bottle if possible.

Language- we are continuing with synthesizing while reading. The students are now beginning to share more of their thoughts as they grow and change during our read-alouds. In writing, we will discuss different styles of poetry and write some of our own poems.

Math- we are working on fact families (related addition and subtraction facts up to 18). Knowing fact families can help to reinforce the basic facts, as well as, teach the concept of equality.

Science- we are continuing our unit on Air and Water in the Environment. This week we will focus on environmental problems and solutions and what we can/should be doing to help.

Drama- each group’s presentation of “Moose’s Loose Tooth” have turned out great! We will practice some more this week, including with costumes. The students showed great interest in sharing the play with the rest of the school- performances will be scheduled for next week.

Rupnik 11

Mrs. Rupnik’s Class

It was wonderful to see so many family members at our performances of “The Little Red Hen” last week.  The children did a wonderful job memorizing their lines and performing their roles in front of different audiences. Bravo, boys and girls!  I can’t believe fast the school year is winding down.  Although it is getting a little harder to keep the children engaged in learning all day long, I can always count on keeping them hooked during our read-alouds.  They love listening to, discussing, and connecting with the characters in our stories. The “Last Day Blues” is the perfect way to end our year of read-alouds. In this story, the students are worried that Mrs. Hartwell is going to spend her entire summer missing them, but Mrs. Hartwell is secretly just as thrilled about summer as they are. For writing this week, we will work on summer vocabulary and finish our ‘bucket list’ for the summer.

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

Happy Father’s Day  to all the dad’s! Hope you enjoyed a wonderful weekend!

The last full week of the school year is full of activity.  On Tuesday many of the junior students will be participating in the board Track and Field meet. Wednesday is our year end school mass where all are welcome to join us in celebrating a wonderful school year. Thursday will be our awards assembly where many students will be recognized for their hard work throughout the year.

In language arts, we are using many of the comprehension strategies we have used throughout the year ie. predicting, analyzing, visualizing… as we enjoy read alouds through our text talk resource. We will also continue to look at different types of media and discuss the strategies used to attract their chosen audience.  The students will also be working on their Digital Passport – an online resource that allows the students to interact with different activities to teach the students how to be good digital citizens.  Very important lessons in this day and age!

In math, we have completed our 3-D city.  We have very creative architects in our grade 4/5 class.  We will be reviewing the concepts we have learned over the year with a focus on basic facts and multiplying and dividing larger numbers.

Looking forward to an exciting week!

Thank you for your continued support!

Have a wonderful week!

FDK News for May 2 – May 6, 2016!

We had a great week in FDK!  We started our week with a great trip to our local fire station.  Thank you so much to all of our wonderful parent volunteers!  We had an amazing time climbing into all of the fire trucks and rescue boat.  It was great to meet the real heroes in our community, our local firefighters!
Bubbles was back this week from Starr Gymnastics.  We had so much fun in the gym with all of the special equipment.  We are great gymnasts!
We are decorating our classroom doors for our Doors of Mercy.  FDK 1’s theme is Comfort the Sick and FDK2 is Give Drink to the Thirsty.  FDK2 put these words into action by giving water to each student in the school after their time in the gym. Way to go FDK2!
This will be a very eventful week in FDK!  Please check the school website for a summary of the many events taking place during this very important week in Catholic Education!  This week we the students had the opportunity to plant sunflowers in soil. We will be watching them grow and then we will transplant them in the school garden. We look forward to seeing you during Catholic Education Week!

Ms. Myers’ Grade One Class

The “Stuffy Sleepover” was a great success!  The children loved having their animal friends at school – they introduced their “stuffies,” measured them, read them a bedtime story in the library and tucked them in…only to be very surprised the next morning!!  Come by the bulletin board outside our classroom and find out what exactly happens when stuffed animals stay in school overnight….!!!  Last Tuesday, Ms. Wilcox gave a great presentation about biking and walking safety. She distributed important information from Ottawa Public Health regarding the importance of wearing helmets when biking and skateboarding. A May newsletter and homework calendar will be going home next week. As we prepare for our trip to the Rosemount Library on Wednesday, May 11th, please ensure you have returned the permission form. There are a variety of activities taking place at St. Anthony next week as we celebrate Catholic Education Week, including our Book Fair (taking place in the library). Check Mr. McGuire’s updates and join in when you are able! Have a great week!

Ms. Moga’s Grade 2 class May 2- 6

Welcome to May! We have two months left in the school year and lots of learning still to come!

Last week I was very fortunate to attend the Connect 2016 Conference. I attended various presentations on current and upcoming technology that I hope to begin using what I learned into the grade 2 class as soon as possible.

This week is Catholic Education Week! Many activities are taking place including: Scholastic Book Fair, Beebot Mazerunner Workshop (students will  learn to program by giving directional instructions to the robot and then creating a maze for the bee to follow), Mass, and our monthly Rosary visit.

Curriculum Notes:
Math- we are moving onto multiplication and division. Please see the attached picture for more details and at-home activity suggestions.

Science- we are nearing the end of our unit on Properties of Matter. This week we will discuss floating (buoyancy) and absorbency.

Language- we are continuing with inferring as our reading strategy. This week students will work on explaining their inferences (what clues helped them infer, what background knowledge did they use). In writing, our next unit is narrative (story writing).

Religion- we are discussing how to be more like Jesus and spread the Good News. This is linked to the students’ preparations for First Reconciliation and First Communion.

Please come visit our classroom on Wednesday morning during our Education Week Open House.

Mrs. Rupnik’s Class (May 2- May 6)

Welcome to Catholic Education Week! We have many special activities planned this week, starting with our Open House on Tuesday, May 3. This will be a time to welcome the new students who will be joining the Primary Language Class in the fall.  We hope you can join us for one of our many school-wide activities such as our community breakfast, Family Portrait day, mass at St. Anthony Church, Book Fair, etc.  This week we will continue to use wordless picture books to tell stories. To increase our comprehension, we will also begin to explore the story The Little Red Hen on a deeper level. We will explore different points of view and start to evaluate the story (for example: Did the ending surprise you?; Do you think the Little Red Hen was right in not sharing, or should she have given the other animals some bread?; What do you think will happen the next time Little Red Hen asks her friends to help; What lesson can we learn from this story?; etc.).  Please take some time to read our April class newsletter. New May homework calendars will be sent home on Monday, May 2, 2016.

We ended our week on Friday with our last Starr Gymnastics with “Bubbles”.  The students truly enjoyed their time with him and had an opportunity to learn some terrific movements.  Please consider checking them out on their website for those students who would like to continue pursuing their talent.

This week we look forward to a week devoted to Education.  Beginning with our school wide book fair that will run all week in the learning commons.  Students will be able to preview the books on Monday and then will be able to make a purchase on Wednesday.  This would be a great chance to fill up your home libraries.  On Tuesday the makerspace mobile is coming to St. Anthony’s, the class will be exploring codemaking.

Wednesday begins with our open house with coffee and muffins in the gym followed by a slide presentation.  You are also invited to come down and visit your child’s class and have a chance to see some of their wonderful learning.  On Thursday we begin with a mass at 9:00 at the St. Anthony church in the afternoon our class will have an opportunity to explore with a workshop offered by Ottawa University’s Engineers.  We also will be having a visit from an Ottawa author “Chris Nihmey”  who will be reading his new book called “Sally” and discuss some of his techniques in becoming a writer.  We end our week on Friday with Pizza day.

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

We get to start the month of May with Education Week!!  There are lots of activities taking place this week.  Some of the highlights for the Grade 4/5  class are: visiting the Rosemount library on Wednesday,  a school mass on Thursday and a book fair in our own learning commons.  Please check the school website for all the wonderful things happening this week.

The students did a great job presenting their biography book talk.  The confidence and comfort level has improved significantly for many of the students over the previous book talks.  Credit goes to the students and all the effort they put into preparing for their presentations.  We all learned lots of interesting information about fascinating people. Well Done!!

The students will have the opportunity to share their Biography Digital Posters this week. They will be hanging proudly in the halls of St. Anthony for all to see and enjoy.

The students have also been working on the writing skill of summarizing.  Under the guidance of Mr. Moleski we have used the website Teaching Kids News. The students have been reading news articles, finding the main facts while using the read and write app to write a summary of the article.  This is an important skill that students will be able to use throughout their academic careers and beyond.

In math, we continue to work with fractions.  We will use the inquiry method as well as mathletics to learn about the concepts in this strand of math.  I encourage you to talk about fractions in everyday life.  We see them involving food sharing, money, things that come in sets and groups of objects.  The more the students see the relationship to real life the easier it is to understand the concepts.

Homework duotangs will be sent home on Monday with math activities to reinforce  Fraction concepts.  They will also be responsible for completing the summary they started last week on an article from Teaching Kids News.  They are to put it into their Language Folder on their Chromebooks where I can check their completed paragraph.  All work is to be completed by Friday.

Thank you for your continued support!

Have a wonderful week!

Teacher Notes for the upcoming week

FDK News for the upcoming week

April is here!  We had a great time on April Fool’s Day.  Ask your child about some of the fun tricks the teachers played on Friday.  We walked through our neighbourhood in search of our bear cave.  We were going to wake up our hibernating bears however when we finally reached the cave we were all surprised to find out that the bears were gone!!  The FDK students searched everywhere in the school yard!  When we arrived back in class we found all of our bears in the classroom!  We had lots of laughs!
We have many events this week, a rosary visit by Ms. Lucy on Wednesday, along with Dental Screening by our dental hygienist.  On Friday we will celebrate our Easter Mass at 9:00am at St Anthony Church, please join us!  It is also Pizza Day this Friday!  All families are invited at 4:30 pm for our Movie Night!!  We will be showing Inside Out on a big screen in the gym!  Come in your pajamas!
We continue to discuss the changing seasons and look for signs of Spring, we will read many books about Spring and have many opportunities to get outside and explore.  We are focusing on Measurement in Math and students are beginning to use many different non-standard measuring devices to measure length such as hands, feet, books and string.  We are using measurement terms like shorter and longer.  We will prepare for our Easter Mass by completing our Alleluia crosses and discussing what the Easter season brings to us!
Have a great week!  The FDK Team!

Ms. Myers Grade One Class:

Easter continues! The children enjoyed a special “egg hunt” where they had to read the clues the Easter Bunny left for each of them in order to find their egg!  On Friday, April 8th, we will attend our school Easter Mass. A representative from the Shepherd’s of Good Hope will pick up our Lenten food drive donations at that time. Thanks to all of you who showed such generosity!  The children had a great time investigating mini-circuits with our school “Little Bits” kits. This week we look forward to our visit from the Scientists in Schools program. Wendy Decker, our scientist, will guide us through five learning centers where the students will explore different aspects of energy in our lives. April newsletters and homework calendars went home on April 1st. As mentioned in the newsletter, our class word wall is full!  The children will no longer be bringing home 5 words each Monday. We will work with our existing words, focusing on how they can help us read and spell new words. In math, we will finish up our work on telling time to the hour and half hour and move on to exploring coins and their value. To reinforce money concepts at home, provide your child with opportunities to count the change in your wallet, or perhaps a piggy bank…real-life experiences are so helpful!!  The “Wonderful Ones” will be leading the Morning Announcements this week. If your child has been asked to say a prayer, please have them practice reading it aloud to you in preparation. Have a great week!

Grade 1 this week

Ms. Moga’s Grade Two Class:

Welcome April! Hopefully warmer days are headed our way; however, in the meantime please ensure your child is dressed accordingly for outside.

In Math, we will continue to discuss area and perimeter. We will do some more hands-on activities to help us grasp these two concepts.

In Language, we are shifting our focus to inferring (when readers think about and search the text, and sometimes use personal knowledge to construct meaning beyond what is literally stated). We will also begin a unit on persuasive writing.

In Science, we will examine solids that dissolve in water and those that don’t. We will also investigate the three states of water and what conditions make it change states.

In gym, we continue to build our fitness through running games. We will also begin some gymnastics stations (e.g. rolling, jumping and landing in different ways).

I continue to share our learning via Twitter. You can follow me @MogaOttawa to see the grade 2 class in action!

grade 2 2

Mrs. Rupnik’s Primary Language Class

Through phonics and spelling lessons (for example: rhymes, chants, word patterns, songs, etc.), the children will be introduced to five new words that will be added to our word wall this week.  In order to read and write independently, children must learn to automatically recognize and spell high-frequency words that occur in almost everything they read and write.  Help your child cut out the five new word wall cards and place them in his/her zip-lock bag provided.  Practise saying the words aloud with your child for a few minutes each evening and encourage him/her to print them out neatly in the word wall homework notebook.  Then, if time permits, try a bonus activity or two with your child.  (The bonus activity sheet is stapled on the inside cover of the word wall homework notebook.)  On Friday, the children will be assessed on the new word wall words (oral and spelling tests).

·         Movie Night April 8th at 4:30

·         Star Gymnastics begins April 12th

·         Earth Day Clean the Capital and recycle challenge April 22

Learning goals:

Religion and Family Life

We are focusing our Religion lessons with the Events leading up to 50 days of Easter and celebrating New Life.

Language

In reading we will begin learning how determining important ideas and inferring helps us in becoming a better reader.  We practice by knowing the main ideas of a text and what the author considers important.  In writing we are beginning to look at procedural texts and working on the elements of what good writing looks like.

A big focus for the next two months will be preparing for our EQAO testing that takes place at the end of May.  You can support by reviewing the best practices when answering multiple choice questions and writing responses to comprehension questions from what they read.

Mathematics

We will begin on working on multiplication and division.  We also continue to practice daily our number sense through mad minutes and problem-solving questions.  Please review the basic addition, subtraction and multiplication facts regularly at home.

Science

The grade 3 will begin looking at structures and mechanism and the grade 4 are learning about rocks and minerals with Mr. Chartrand.

Homework :    Homework continues to provide students with extra practice for the concepts that are covered in class.  It also involves practice for the grade 3 EQAO testing.  Please take the time to look and review homework with your children. In order to reduce paper consumption homework will continue to be in a monthly calendar format.

Agendas:  Please continue to check your child’s agenda for important information and notes.  Have your child show you their end of the week learning goals at the end of each week.

Thank you for your continued support in your child’s Education .

The goal has been for students to estimate and calculate the product of two-digit numbers and the quotient of two and three-digit numbers divided by one-digit numbers.  These skills will help your child to solve two-step word problems.  Talk to your child about situations in which you use multiplication and division in your daily life and when you might use mental computations, pencil and paper, or a calculator to find the answer.  Your child may solve questions differently from you.  It is important that your child recognizes that there are several ways of solving the same question.  Students will solve problems involving whole numbers, and describe and explain the variety of strategies used. Your child should continue to practice multiplication and division regularly to help strengthen these concepts and to allow them to apply them confidently when needed in all areas of the curriculum.

Our next focus in math is fractions.  I encourage your children to practice using fractions in real life situations (ie. sharing a pizza or chocolate bar, baking or when eating parts of a fruit).  The more your child uses fractions and the language related to it the more comfortable they will feel using it in their everyday lives. We will continue to incorporate the Inquiry based method in mathematics. The students will be presented with open ended problems to solve using their prior knowledge and available materials to come up with solutions.

You may visit mathK8.nelson.com and follow the links to Nelson Mathematics 4 or 5, for more suggestions to help your child learn and practice the concepts that we are working with in class.
Easter 3

Language Arts:

In Language Arts the students successfully completed their procedural writing. They are proudly hanging in the junior hall for all to learn “How to…”.  During the month of April the students book report will include reading a biography about a famous person of their choice.  They will orally present their information to the class, as well as create a digital poster of their chosen person.  We look forward to learning about a variety of significant people that have made a difference in our world. Our comprehension strategy focus will be predicting.  This requires the reader to anticipate, think ahead, and hypothesize about what might happen, based on personal prior knowledge and clues the author provides. Our writing focus will by narrative.  We will read several Folk Tales and Pourquoi Tales before the students will use their creative minds to write their own Pourquoi tales.  The creative juices will be flowing in April!

Religion/ Family Life

We had a thoughtful journey throughout Lent exploring the events and bible readings of Jesus’ sacrifice.  We took the time for self-reflection so that we were truly prepared for Easter.  We now bask in the joyous events of his resurrection.

In Family Life we will explore the second theme “Living in Relationship.”  God created us to live in relationship with others and to respond to each other with love.  Living in relationship begins in the family, the setting in which people first learn about love.  As children grow up, friendship becomes more and more important to them.  In this theme we will be exploring both important relationships – family and friendship.

Easter 33

Important Dates:

April 8th – 9:00 am –  Easter Mass at St. Anthony’s Church

April 15th – PD Day – No school for the students

Thank you for your continued support in helping your child take responsibility for his/her learning through attentive listening, strong organizational skills, and task completion.  We also appreciate the healthy snacks and lunches you have been sending to school with your child so that he/she has the proper nourishment to meet the needs of a busy school day.

Ms. Colaiacovo’s Grade 5/6 News

The grade 5/6 class has sprung into the new season with energy and enthusiasm! We congratulate the nine students who received the Sacrament of Confirmation from Archbishop Prendergast at St. Anthony parish on Saturday, April the 2nd! The students modelled confidence and maturity as they celebrated this very special milestone in their faith journey.

Work in mathematics continues to focus on solving problems using the operations of multiplication and division. Our grade 6 students continue learning about electricity with Miss Parmiss, our student teacher. We continue to work on different “fix-up” strategies to strengthen pieces of writing in language arts, in anticipation, especially, of the forthcoming EQAO testing for the grade 6 students. Our religion focus has been the Lenten season and we will continue to examine the wonder of Jesus’ resurrection during this Easter season. The grade 5/6 students have been learning about the use and misuse and the effects of alcohol and drugs during health lessons and this strand will continue through the month of April.
Our junior division students enjoyed a month of intermural basketball competition and many of the students will continue to practice to represent the school at the Board tournaments later this month.
We will bid a fond farewell to Miss Parmiss, as her practicum assignment winds to an end this week. We hope that she will be able to come back and continue working with students again, and we wish her well on her next year in the Bachelor of Education program and her future endeavours!
The bi-weekly Papa Jack fundraiser for the grade six year-end trip continues to be a success. We thank all parents in the school community for your continued support.

Winter Walk Day

Winter Walk Day: #walktoschool

Students go out for first recess.  They eat snack and go to the washroom BEFORE going out.
After recess the students line up and we go for one lap around the playground with the kindergartens.
We then proceed out the gates onto Booth Street and walk to Dows Lake. I can lead with my class and maybe have the Grade 6 class bring up the back.
When we get to Dow’s lake we will take a walk around and see if there are any sculptures or sights to see.
Then we will head back up Booth street HOME!
When we return there will be cups with hot chocolate waiting in your classrooms.  Hot water will need to be added to the mix.  Then serve!
Students will eat their lunch and talk about the wonderful walk they just experienced!
Parent help is very welcome!!
That’s all!!!

FDK News for Februaury 1-5, 2016
It’s February!  We are very excited to begin a new month of learning in Kindergarten and happy to say goodbye to January!  It was nice to see some new snow last week on the schoolyard to cover the ice and give us some great opportunities to roll snowballs and make shapes in the snow.  We also had a chance to participate in a school-wide reading buddies program for Family Literacy Day.  This Monday is Winter Walk Day.  Our FDK students will participate with the whole school to do a few laps of the school yard and to have Fizz the mascot join us!  We will also kick off this month with a new theme of “I Care”.  There will be a school-wide assembly on Friday!  Our FDK students are enjoying our “Caught You Caring” campaign and are doing random acts of kindness!  Ask your child if they have been caught caring!  We are focusing on using kind words, showing respect to others, sharing and caring!  We are off to a great start and it is great to see all students trying their best!  They are even catching each other caring and telling a teacher about the kind acts!  Way to go FDK!!

Ms. Myers’ Grade One class

Mrs. Manzoli’s class proved to be “Shining Stars” for the “Wonderful Ones” this past week! They shared their love of reading and books with us as we read together for Literacy Day and they also showed great leadership as they helped the grade ones navigate a new math website called “Mathletics.” Thanks so much to our Grade 3/4 buddies!  We begin this week with our “Winter Walk” on Monday. This is an Ottawa Public Health initiative to promote healthy, active lifestyles. Please check the weather forecast and ensure your child is dressed appropriately for our walk. In math, we continue working on our understanding of whole numbers.  In language we are focusing on adding detail to our sentences using describing words. Look for a new homework calendar and class newsletter that will be in your child’s agenda this week!

Ms. Moga’s Grade Two class

It’s hard to believe February is already here! We start the month with a busy week. On Monday, the grade 2s will participate in a Winter Walk with the whole school. We will be walking to Dow’s Lake and back, so please check the weather and dress accordingly.

On Friday, the grade 2s are presenting the next school virtue, which is “I Care”. Students will be bringing home their words to practice for Friday’s presentation.

In language, we’re wrapping up Asking Questions. The students are working towards understanding that asking questions deepens their comprehension. We will read a couple more intriguing texts and complete question webs to show our thinking.

In math, we are focused on geometry. The students are working on identifying and describing various polygons and sorting and classifying them by their geometric properties (number of sides, number of vertices).

In science, we are exploring the six types of simple machines.

Have a great week!

In Mrs. Manzoli’s Class this week…

Welcome to February!  We are at the halfway point to spring.  We will see what Willie the groundhog has to say on February 2nd, Groundhog Day.  We continue to enjoy our winter days by our winter walkathon on Monday.  We will be escorted by our mascot Phiz to Dow’s Lake.

In language this week we will wrap up our descriptive writing unit as we move into our narrative writing unit focusing on Adventure stories.  Our reading strategy will be asking good questions for meaning and determining the important ideas of a text.  Watch out for new words for the week in your child’s agenda.  We will be having our word quiz on Friday.

Last week in Math we focused on telling time.  This week we will be looking at measuring temperature and the important elements of the thermometer.   You can reinforce this skill at home with simple activities.

The students have been enjoying learning about music and this week we will be exploring with some instruments and maybe compose our own tunes.

Reminders:

  • Digital Citizen Project is due this Friday.  The students will be presenting their learning next week.
  • Library book due on Monday
  • Friends for Life on Thursday
  • Popcorn sale on Friday $1

 Nora 1Ms. Colaiacovo’s Grade 5-6 February Newsletter

The month of February will bring a flurry of activity to St. Anthony Catholic School and our Grade 5/6 class will be front and centre to this excitement. The students have been working hard during our first term of school and there has been a great emphasis on taking responsibility for organizing their work and using their time wisely to complete assignments to their full potential and ability. During the second half of the school year there will be even greater emphasis placed on accountability and independence, while setting goals to improve their work habits and learning skills. This is an essential skillset, especially for our grade 6 students who will be moving on to the Intermediate Panel next year.

Beginning on February 8th and continuing to the end of April, we welcome Ms. Parmiss Akbari to our class as a student teacher. Ms. Akbari is in her first year of the two-year Bachelor of Education program at the University of Ottawa. We look forward to capitalizing on her expertise in math and science! We have had the privilege of having Ms. Parmiss with us periodically throughout the first term and she has developed a comfortable, mutually respectful and friendly rapport with all the students in our class.

In Math, we will be working to understand the concepts of linear measurements, time, temperature (grade 5), and converting units of linear measurement, and developing/applying area relationships involving two and three dimensional shapes (grade 6). Using measurement is an important life skill that Grade 5 and 6 students are expected to master. Please practice these skills at home to reinforce the concepts that they learn at school. We will also continue working with and reviewing basic math skills on a regular basis. Multiplication facts and multidigit addition and subtraction will continue to be a focus throughout the coming months. These skills will be crucial when we begin our formal instruction on multi-digit multiplication and division. Here are some ways that you can support your child’s learning during this unit:

  •      estimate the length of objects at home and then measure the objects in decimeters or centimetres and compare the results
  •       using a ruler, your child could practice measuring and record findings using millimeters, centimeters, and decimeters and can estimate, then determine the surface area of objects, using the appropriate units of measurement
  •       look for opportunities to read clock faces to measure how long certain activities take to complete in hours and minutes, such as completing homework, watching a video, or getting ready for bed

In Language Arts, the students will focus their reading on determining importance in texts. This is an important concept for students to learn and practice so that they are able to provide detailed summaries of what they have read. Students will be asked to choose a favourite children’s picture book and will be asked to retell the story in a creative presentation in front of the class. We will also practice persuasive writing which will allow us to address curriculum expectations in reading, writing, oral communication and media literacy.

In grade 6 Science, we are finishing our  Biodiversity strand and, as the month progresses, we will  move on to the Electricity strand, which will be taught by Ms. Parmiss.  The students will evaluate the impact of the use of electricity on both the way we live and the environment, investigate the characteristics of static and current electricity, and construct simple circuits and demonstrate an understanding of the principles of electrical energy and its transformation into and from other forms of energy.

In Religion, we will observe the Lenten Season by engaging in prayer, participating in liturgies, finding ways to be more caring and kind to each other, and reaching out to those in need in our school community and our community at large. To that end, we hope to visit St. Luke’s Table to volunteer our services again during this most Holy Season.

In Gym, the students will have the opportunity to experience the joys of winter.  They will enjoy our wonderful downhill ski excursion to Mount Pakenham and participate in other outdoor activities such as snowshoeing during regular physical education classes. We encourage you to take advantage of this beautiful time of the year with your child and embrace our winter wonderland.

Things You Can Do At Home:

  •       Practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts daily.
  •       Set aside time each day for your child to complete his/her homework or to review concepts that have been learned in class.
  •       Have your child read each day for at least 30 minutes and then discuss the story with you (ask your child to summarize what he/she has just read!)

Important dates:

Monday, February 1 – School-wide Winter Walk Day to Dow’s Lake

Wednesday, February 10 – Ash Wednesday. Also,  the final due date for Ski forms and payment

Friday, February 12 – Opportunity to deliver Valentines to classmates

Monday, February 15 – Family Day – Statutory holiday, no school

Thursday, February 18 – Term One report cards will be sent home

Wednesday, February 24th – Junior division downhill ski day at Mount Pakenham

I thank you for your continued support and cooperation. If you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at the school.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Colaiacovo

As the grade 5/6 class winds down the first term and moves into the second term, we hope to continue to build momentum to cap off a successful year. These next few months will be packed with exciting learning and extracurricular activities, as well as preparation for EQAO testing, the Sacrament of Confirmation and transitioning to the intermediate panel for the grade 6 students. We have our work cut out for us!

February will be a very busy month with many noteworthy days such as Groundhog Day on the 2nd, AshWednesday on the 10th, St. Valentine’s Day on the 14th, Family Day on the 15th (statutory holiday), the junior ski day on the 24th (more details on this below), and recognition of the leap year on the 29th.

The students will be finishing up the data management strand of mathematics in the next couple of weeks and we will move into Term 2 with time spent on the measurement strand. The students have had two opportunities to present book talks in the months of December and January for the oral language strand of our language arts curriculum. It is imperative for the students to practice public speaking skills to attain a high level of competence, which will, in turn, also increase their confidence. There will be several other opportunities as we move through next term to demonstrate their knowledge in this area. In grade 6 science, students have been learning about the classification systems in the Five Kingdoms which help explain the concept of biodiversity. The afternoon grade 5/6 students have been participating enthusiastically and enjoying the drama warm-up activities that we have been doing during the month of January. Kimberley and Meaghan from the Somerset West Community Centre have been visiting our class each Thursday  to work with our students on the “Friends for Life” social skills program. We thank them for their continued spirited enthusiasm.

We are all very excited about the junior ski trip at Mount Pakenham ski resort which is scheduled for the24th of February. It is crucial that students return their completed ski forms as soon as possible, even if this means that the $25 participation fee follows at a later date. In addition, please ensure that the information is accurate, as this must be forwarded to the ski hill in order for them to properly prepare the rental equipment for each of the students.

Papa Jack popcorn sales will continue every second Friday (including this coming Friday, February 5th) to raise funds for the year-end grade 6 trip. Thank you for your continued support in this endeavor.

Please continue to support your child’s learning by ensuring that they are present at school, and on time and organized for learning. Please encourage them to set aside time each evening to complete homework assignments to the best of their ability. Thank you,

Teacher Notes for this Week

FDK News Week of November 23-27
Mrs. Draper’s Class

The FDK classes will begin to prepare for winter.  We will be hibernating bears this week in our very own bear cave.  Students can bring in a stuffed toy (hopefully, one that they are not to attached to) or one will be provided for them to walk to our bear cave.  We will place our stuffed animals in the cave and we will wait until Springtime to wake up our bears!
We enjoyed measuring, mixing and making muffins last week.  We also found out how to measure our feet and our hands.  Students enjoyed comparing their results and using cubes to show how long their feet and hands are.
We will also prepare for our Advent mass that will take place on Monday November 30, 2015 at 1:30pm in Learning Commons.
The FDK class will prepare a song to sing “Take a Walk to Christmas”.  We will send home the words for you to sing along at home too.
We look forward to preparing for this very special Advent Season!

Ms. Myers Grade One Class:

This week we continue our math unit on patterning. The “Wonderful Ones” will have opportunities to create, extend, represent, and record a variety of patterns and see how patterns help us make predictions and solve problems. We will discuss “attributes” of a pattern (things such as colour, shape, size, and design) and the “pattern core” (the part of the pattern that repeats).  In reading we will work on developing our understanding of a story by focusing on specific vocabulary.  At the end of the week, ask your child to tell you about our “WOW” words – those new words they have learned from our story Sheila Rae, The Brave!  On Thursday we will participate in a “Looking at Pictures” presentation. A volunteer from the National Gallery of Canada will lead us on an interactive journey towards greater art appreciation using a number of visual art reproductions.  A reminder that November homework is due this week.

Ms. Moga Grade 2 Class:

We had a great 4 days last week full of learning! We worked on retelling fictional texts (e.g. The Little Red Hen, and A Pocket for Corduroy). Students are learning that there are four parts to a retell: characters, setting, problem, event (told in order), and a solution. This is something they can practice while reading at home.

This week, we will be wrapping up our science reports on various animals and then looking at the human impact on animals, and animal impact on humans. In math, we will be finishing up graphing by conducting surveys, and showing our data using pictographs, bar graphs, and line plots. In religion, we will continue discussing saints and the Beatitudes, which will take us into the beginning of Advent next week. Finally, in art we are wrapping up with symmetry; the students should be finished their patter block plates this week.

I look forward to another great week in grade 2!

Mrs. Rupnik’s Class

We begin the week with showcasing our class certificate and the St. Anthony Superstars trophy. Last week the Primary Language Class received this award for our teamwork and cooperation. Way to go, boys and girls! I am very proud of you. Would you like to read the class a short story? As mentioned at our Parent-Teacher Conferences, consider dropping me a note in the agenda.  The students love having moms/dads visit and read us a story. This week, we will begin to talk about “saying sorry” using stories from our Room 14 Social Language Program. Please remember that the Ottawa Catholic School Board provides students with access to digital resources to use at home. To access the student portal page, please navigate to St. Anthony Catholic School website page (http://san.ocsb.ca/) and access the student portal page from there.  Homework calendars for the month of November on due back to school on Friday, November 27, 2015.

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

The last full week of November! Wow! Time flies when you are learning lots!

Our class engaged in wonderful discussions on being a good digital citizen.  We watched videos and completed activities related to our discussions.  The students were extremely focused and brought many thoughtful ideas surrounding this important topic.  We will continue with our digital citizenship lessons this week.

Our math test on Addition and Subtraction is scheduled for Tuesday.  The students have completed review lessons in class and online, using the Nelson Math website. They will be able to demonstrate their understanding and the use of these concepts as they apply them on the test.

The students homework book will be coming home today with a unique assignment enclosed.  They will be preparing for a book talk. They are to choose a chapter book of their choice and at their reading level.  They must read the book and prepare a talk about the book that they will present to the class the week of December 7th.  The details and an outline can be found in their homework duotang that they will be bringing home today. I look forward to hearing all about their chosen book.

Please check our class calendar for upcoming events and due dates of class assignments.

Thank you for your ongoing support!

Together Everyone Achieves More

Have a great week!

Ms. Colaiacovo’s Grade 5/6 Class

As we bid a fond farewell to November next week and anticipate a very busy December, here are are few updates from the grade 5/6 class:
We are finishing up patterning and algebra in Math and will soon begin a study of geometry. Please remind your child that regular review of math concepts at home is essential to their continued learning in class. In Language Arts, we will finish our study of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes and further investigate ways in which we can spread a message of peace to others. We are also completing our Space unit in Science and will move on to Biodiversity in the Understanding Life Systems strand. We have had opportunity to focus on and discuss the importance of being a good digital citizen, and we will finish this great program in the coming week.
This is the last week that we will be attending the Y Kids Academy program. The students and I have enjoyed learning about the benefits of being physically active and the staff at the Y has been amazing!
On December 3, the grade 5/6 class will be holding a “cake auction” to kick off our fundraising efforts for the grade 6 year-end trip. Any and all donations of cakes from you, the 5/6 parent community will be greatly appreciated. More information will follow in a separate letter. In addition, we will be further augmenting our fund-raising by selling popcorn to the students in the school on a bi-monthly basis (alternating Fridays to the pizza days).
As always, if you any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at the school.

Teacher Notes for the Week

Ms. Myers Grade One Class:

We look forward to a short but busy week in Grade 1!  As part of our health and physical education curriculum, we will focus on the importance of proper hand washing. Using resources from Ottawa Public Health, the children will review the procedure for proper hand washing and the “Glitterbug” will help us find out if our hands are truly clean or not!  This is an essential habit for the children to practice, especially as we enter cold and flu season. A reminder that library and home reading books are due every Wednesday. Thank you for taking the time to read with your child each night using books from school or those you may have at home.  On Friday, October 16, we will celebrate our Thanksgiving Mass at 9:00 a.m. at St. Anthony Church.  You are welcome to attend!

Ms. Drapers Grade Two Class

The grade 2 class prepared for Thanksgiving by discussing what we are truly thankful for.  We enjoyed singing a Thank you song, making a hand printed turkey and an edible turkey!  We will continue practicing songs for our Thanksgiving mass and preparing for our first mass of the year on Friday October 16th at 9:00 am.  Please join us at St. Anthony Church.
We are busy counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s in our Math unit on Numbers.  Students used old calendars to create number lines, find numbers and to practice skip counting.  We will continue counting and grouping items into 10’s to help us count!
We enjoyed our Read-a-Loud called “The Thing I Saw Last Night.”  We were able to make many personal connections to this story!  Students love the opportunity to share their own personal connections with the class!  Many great storytellers in Grade 2!!
Library Day will return next Monday.  Gym days on Wednesday and Friday.  Happy Thanksgiving to all of our St Anthony School Community!

Mrs. Rupnik’s Primary Language Class

Welcome back from the Thanksgiving long weekend.  I hope you enjoyed some family time together.  Did you have an opportunity to try out Raz-Kids at home yet? A note was sent home last Thursday with personal login information and passwords. It is a wonderful tool because it helps children improve recognition of word wall words, enhance oral reading skills, comprehension, etc.  This week, I will begin showing the children how ‘think-marks’ work.  ‘Think-marks’ involves stopping while reading and thinking about the story on a deeper level. Students will learn to use post-it notes and record their thinking when reading with the assistance of myself and our wonderful volunteers.  This allows us to talk about our thinking and to better understand the stories we read. Our Thanksgiving mass is scheduled forFriday, October 16, 2015 at 9:00am. If you are available, please join us for this special celebration at St. Anthony Parish.

Manzoli Stars……. This week

Hoping all families had an enjoyable Thanksgiving Weekend.  As we enter in this short week we look forward to another swimming lesson on Wednesday.  Don’t forget your bathing suit and towel.

We will be also having our first Thanksgiving Mass on Friday October 16 at 9:00.  Some students will be bringing home their part of the mass to practice.

manzoli

Homework folders:  students are bringing in their homework in pieces, please remind your child to have their homework completed and placed in folders provided.  We will be having our second word quiz this Friday and some children have not returned their notebook.  Having responsibility of their belongings is something crucial for proper learning to happen.

We are also consolidating our number sense unit with a quiz on Friday.  Children should be able to:

  • represent numbers to 1000 (Gr. 3) 10,000 (Gr.4)
  • represent place value of ones, tens, hundreds, thousand
  • write numbers in expanded form
  • identifying greater/less numbers ( symbols < >)
  • round numbers to nearest ten and hundred

In language we are still working on “Listening to Read”.  We will begin using RAZ KIds an online reading program.

Have a great week!

Mrs. Manzoli
