FDK News for May 9-13

Happy Mother’s Day to all of our wonderful mother’s!
We hope you enjoyed a wonderful Mother’s Day!  The flowers were planted with love for all our moms and the cards were hand-made with our own fingerprints!  The FDK students were so proud to share their gifts!

Thank you for returning the permission forms for our Walking Field Trip to the Tulip Festival this Friday!  We look forward to walking to Commissioner’s Park to see the beautiful tulips at 10:00am on Friday May 13th.   Thank you in advance to all our parent volunteers!

We will be singing a special song on Friday afternoon for all of our parent volunteers.  We will gather in the gym on Friday for our Volunteer Appreciation Day!

Another great week of learning ahead…..our caterpillars are arriving this week!  We will be watching them grow and transform into beautiful butterflies!  Stay tuned for Butterfly Release Day.  We will be reading “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and learning about the butterfly life cycle.  We are also going to be learning about living and non-living things!
Have a great week!

Ms. Myers’ Grade One Class

It was great to see so many of you during Catholic Education Week! The children enjoyed some special presentations including a visit from a biology student from the University of Ottawa. “Scientist Riyanna” discussed the differences between herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores using real mammal skulls! The grade ones were suitably impressed! Last week our awesome bean plants were sent home!  The classroom may feel a little lonely this week – but not for long as we anticipate the arrival of our incubating eggs in the weeks to come! This Wednesday, May 11th, we look forward to our visit to the Rosemount Public Library. In math this week we will explore how to measure the capacity of different containers. If you are cooking at home, include your child in measuring out ingredients, this will help them to see the real life application of skills we learn in mathematics. In language, the “Wonderful Ones” will busy writing their own narratives. We have some great story-tellers in the class!  Permission forms for our Gatineau Park trip went home last week. Please ensure you sign and return this form to school so everyone will be included on June 1st. As well, the “Wonderful Ones” will be leading the morning announcements this week. If your child has been asked to say a prayer, please have them practice reading it aloud to you in preparation. Have a great week!

Ms. Moga’s Grade two class

Catholic Education was a great success. Thank you to all the parents who were able to stop by and visit our classroom. The students enjoyed the Beebot Workshop, visiting the book fair, and our last Rosary visit for this school year.

This week, we will be visiting the Rosemount Public Library on Thursday afternoon.

Math- we are continuing our unit on multiplication and division.

Language- we are beginning a new unit on narrative (story) writing. In grade 2, students are expected to write an original story or an extension of a familiar story. We will first work on a story together as a class before students’ write their own.

Science- we are beginning our unit on Air and Water in the Environment. The big ideas for this unit are: air and water are a major part of the environment; living things need air and water to survive; changes to air and water affect living things and the environment, our actions affect the quality of air and water, and its ability to sustain life.

Religion- we continue to discuss forgiveness in preparation for First Reconciliation and First Communion.

Finally, please sign and return the permission form for our trip to Gatineau Park on June 1st.
Have a great week!

Mrs. Rupnik’s Class

This week in the Primary Language Class, we will move from telling stories to writing stories together as a class, using the special anchor chart we created a few weeks ago.   We will also continue to work on the Little Red Hen story, specifically making connections and retelling the story from memory.  The Retelling Journal arrives home on Friday. Be sure to sit with your child and listen to him/her retell this story.  Then write the retelling in the journal. Have him/her draw a picture in the journal as well.  Return the Retelling Journal to school on Monday, May 16. In our Social Language program, we will focus on handling our feelings at school and at home. Please note: The morning Primary Language Class students will be attending two field trips this week: Rosemount Public Library on Tuesday and Tulip Festival at Commissioners Park (Dows Lake) on Friday.

Note: Congratulations to my morning class who led the Catholic Education Week mass on Thursday at St. Anthony Church. I am so very proud of you all!

Ms. Manzoli’s Class – Grade 3 /4 Class this week…

We ended Education week with many fun and interesting activities and visits from various presenters.  This week we try to get back to a regular routine.  A reminder that if your child still wishes to purchase a book from the book fair it will be open this week.

In language this week we will begin exploring persuasive writing.  We will look at how having strong arguments versus the pros or cons of a topic makes your persuasion more convincing.

The grade 3 students will be also focusing on EQAO preparation questions for Language.  There will be no new words of the week introduced for the remainder of the year.  We will focus on reviewing difficult words and word patterns.

In Math, we looked at how fractions are parts of a whole last week.  This week we will look at how fractions are used as we explore linear, measurements.  We will investigate the mm, cm, m, and km.  We will look at the metric system and learn how to convert smaller units of measurement into larger ones.  The grade 3 students will also look at sample EQAO questions.

A reminder for those students receiving First Reconciliation on Friday to please arrive 15 minutes earlier to the church for a quick rehearsal.  First Holy Communion will be Saturday at 5 PM during the regular Saturday Mass.  Please arrive 15 minutes before mass begins so that families may sit at the front of the church and we can go over the details of the mass.  Make sure that the children are dressed appropriately and have well rehearsed their prayers.

Reminders:

  • No library book exchange this week
  • Papa Jack popcorn sale on Friday
  • Volunteer Appreciation assembly on Friday at 2:00

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend.  Education week was a flurry of activity that was enjoyed by all. It was nice to see some of our parents able to join us.

We will start the week with our  rescheduled visit to the Rosemount Library on Monday morning.  It is a wonderful free resource with lots of activities for the students to participate in during the summer months.

In language we completed our read aloud book To the Top of Everest where we used the reading strategy of predicting.  It was a fascinating nonfiction story with lots of life lessons to be learned from it.  Ask your child about some of the highlights of one man’s extraordinary journey.

This week we will read several pour quoi tales before the students embark on writing their own tale.

In math we will continue to explore Fractions.  We will use inquiry, manipulatives as well as Mathletics to allow the students ample opportunities to be able to work with fractions confidently.

In Family Life we will begin Unit 3 : Created Sexual – Male and Female.  A note was sent home on Friday outlining the topics and information that will be taught during this unit.  Please feel free to contact me at the school if you have any questions.

The students will bring home their work folder this week to share with you.  Please review the work with your child, sign it and return it to school with your child.

Your child should be reading each evening for a minimum of 20 mins. They should also take the time to practice and review any concepts they have been taught in school and practice their basic math facts regularly.  The Chromebooks were assigned to the students to help with their schoolwork and to give them the necessary tools to help them excel in all areas of the curriculum.  It is not intended for the students to spend hours each evening playing games or chatting with friends.  If you find it is not being used for the intended purpose please let me know and we will keep it at school.

Thank you for your continued support!

Have a wonderful week!

Teacher Notes for the week

FDK News for March 7-11, 2016

What an eventful week at St. Anthony School.  We started the week with an amazing presentation from the Earth Rangers.  We were all amazed at the animals they brought to show us.  We really listened to the important messages about conservation and protection of many animals.  On Wednesday we joined our Reading Buddies in the Learning Commons for some excellent storytelling from two of our Grade 4/5 buddies.  We also had a visit from Ms. Lucy for our Rosary Program.  On Friday, we had our Winter Play Day!  Our FDK students enjoyed playing mini-stick hockey, searching for treasure, painting in the snow, scooping snow relay, an obstacle course, sleigh rides, and drinking hot chocolate and marshmallows.  A special thank you to our Grade 4/5 students who participated, led and encouraged our FDK students during the entire Play Day!  The Grade 4/5 truly displayed their kindness!  The FDK students caught the Grade 4/5 class caring!

This is the last week before March Break!  We will continue graphing in Math.  We will get out to enjoy some of the milder weather this week during our recess time.  We continue on our Lenten Journey by collecting cans for the Shepherds of Good Hope.  We will continue to focus on Dr. Seuss stories and rhyming words and word families.  We will visit the gym and the Learning Commons and we will be a part of our monthly assembly and pizza day on Friday!  Have a great week!  We wish all of our families a fun, happy and safe March Break!

Ms. Myers Grade One News

We enjoyed another busy week together! On Wednesday we joined classes across North America to virtually “meet” Peter Reynolds, a popular children’s author. Using our Discovery Education resource, we logged in and listened as Mr. Reynolds introduced his newest book Going Places. He talked about what  it’s like to be a writer and how he get his ideas. We hope to participate in another “virtual fieldtrip” in April for Earth Day! In math this week we will wrap up our exploration of 2-D and 3-D shapes so we will be ready to start our study of time when we return from March Break. Our vocabulary building activities include choosing “WOW” words from the story Harry the Dirty Dog. Ask your child about the new words we add to our “Wow Words” board! In religion we will focus on the story of the Prodigal Son as we explore the themes of forgiveness and making amends. Thank you for your continued support of our school Lenten project.  We will continue to collect cans this week as well as the week we return from March Break. I hope everyone has a chance to enjoy the March Break. Here’s hoping spring weather is on its way!

grade 1Ms. Moga’s Grade 2 Class:

The grade 2s had a great first week of March! Almost everyone had the chance to explain and share about their Simple Machine playground equipment. We had lots of slides, swings, see-saws, and even a couple zip-lines! Anyone who didn’t present yet will have a chance this week.

In Language, we will continue with our unit on procedural writing that we began last week.

In Math, we are continuing with Measurement; however, we will turn our focus to linear measurement (with nonstandard and standard units).

In Science, we will be beginning the unit on Matter. In grade 2, the focus is on Properties of Solids and Liquids.

Our Lenten journey is in the final stretch. We continue to have discussions on how we can be more like Jesus by serving others. This week, we will read the story of Lazarus and begin to look at the events of Holy Week and their significance.

Have a great week!

Ms. Moga

Grade 2-2grade 2

here are some of the tech tools we are using during math

Mrs. Rupnik’s Class

In the Primary Language Class this week, we will start looking at fiction and non-fiction stories with matching themes and topics. Students will listen to Mr. Egg, a fiction book, and later A Nest Full of Eggs, a non-fiction book filled with real facts. Then students will compare the two books and begin to identify distinguishing features of non-fiction books and fiction books.

Enjoy your week long March Break!  Remember repetition reinforces learning for your child.  Ten to fifteen minutes a day can really help, whether it’s reading a favourite book together, measuring ingredients in the kitchen, writing a shopping list, or playing a board game.

Happy March Break!

Manzoli stars this week…..

This will be our last week before March Break begins.  We all look forward to being able to spend some time to relax and enjoy some fun activities.  Time to rejuvenate and hoping that Spring is around the corner.

As we look at our week ahead we will be working on editing our Narrative stories and fine tune them before final draft.  The students are learning how important it is to make your writing:  Attract the reader, make sense by proof reading and look good with proper spelling, punctuation and spacing.  This week we will look at how to add dialogue into our stories.

In Math, we will move to looking at 3 dimensional shapes and explore the properties of these figures.  Some vocabulary words we will be using are: congruent, prisms, pyramids, vertices.

Last week we listened as we heard a talk from the Shepherds of Good Hope and how we are making a difference by providing the perishables we are collecting, we continue to talk about this season of lent and how giving to others is one way we prepare our hearts for the coming Holy Week.

Reminders:

  • Library book return on Monday
  • Homework due on Wednesday
  • Pizza Day On Friday

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

Congratulations to the Grade 4/5 Team for being the winners of the “Caught you Caring” trophy this week!!!  The students are consistently caught caring, however they were especially caring as they helped with the kindergarten winter playday.  They demonstrated great leadership skills as they guided the kinders through a variety of fun winter activities.  There were lots of smiles on one of the last beautiful winter days of the season. Good times!

The grade 4/5s had a wonderful in-service with a technology specialist, Mr. Moleski who taught us how to access many useful tools on the students laptops and Chromebooks.  His focus was on the Read and Write app that aids students with any reading or writing tasks.

We also learned how to summarize a news article.  As part of the students homework this week, the students are to complete summarizing the article and answer the questions related to the article. This activity complements our sequencing and procedural writing focus this month.

The students will be taking home their homework duotang on Monday to complete the newly added activities.  They must also complete the summarizing article, as well as work on Dreambox for 30 minutes to review multiplication and division. All work is to be completed and submitted by Friday.

We continue our Lenten Journey with discussions and Bible readings to help us relate better and become closer to Jesus and the life he lived.  We are doing our part by continuing to donate canned fruit and vegetables to the Shepherds of Good Hope.

We will return from the March Break just in time to observe Holy Week.

The students are encouraged to read each evening. If they are spending time on their chromebooks it should be on raz kids, dreambox, mathletics or accessing  lots of other educational resources available at their fingertips.

Have a wonderful March Break enjoying plenty of time in the great outdoors with family and friends!

Ms. Colaiacovo’s grade 5/6 class notes

March came in like a lion with a 15cm snow storm…..which means it should hopefully be going out like a lamb?! The students are reminded of the importance of dressing for the weather, which includes (until all the snow is gone) wearing snow pants, boots, hats and mitts.

It was a very busy week last week. Our school was fortunate to host an Earth Rangers Assembly on Tuesday last week and all students had the opportunity to see, up close, some of Canada’s endangered species. The 5/6 class participated in a workshop in the afternoon about global warming. The students enjoyed being farmers and planning for Eco-friendly ways to provide for their farms. The grade 6 students enjoyed a morning of “classes” at Notre Dame High School this past Thursday. The teachers and admin staff at Note Dame warmly welcomed them and gave them a taste of what to expect next year.
In the coming week (the last before the March Break!!) we will finish the measurement strand in math and begin working on strategies for persuasive writing. I wish all of you a safe and enjoyable break!

  1. Orkidstra We have started this program at St. Anthony.  The Orkidstra program is based on a program started in 1997 by Dr José Antonio Abreu.  The Venezuelan program has helped thousands of children in underprivileged areas to acquire instruments, receive music training and experience the joy of playing and singing with others in orchestras and choirs. Today El Sistema involves over 400,000 children and young people and it has inspired programs all over the world. Ottawa’s OrKidstra music initiative is the oldest of such programs outside of South America.  We have 14 students enrolled in the program and we are very excited to have this program here at St. Anthony.
  1.  November 30th AssemblyWe Help Each Other – On November 30th, we will be hosting Pierangela Pica and Angela Ierullo and other organizers of the St. Anthony Gala.  The Gala raised $25,000.00 for the school’s greening project in September.  The assembly gives us the opportunity to thank Pierangela for creating our school song – We Help Each Other.  We are playing this song every day at school to get ready for the assembly.  Angela Ierullo will also be honoured for all the work she did organizing the Gala Fundraiser.

we help each other

We Help Each Other

Step by step You’re one of a kind

Day by day

Keep that in mind

We help each other

Each time you start

Along the way

A brand new day

Building tomorrow

Put out your hand

Reach for the stars

Hang on to mine

Be true to yourself

We’ll help each other

Shine wherever you are

We’ll be just fine

CHORUS

This is your time Your roots are your gift

This is your place  To share everyday

We are a family You make a difference

Stand tall with pride Along the way

It’s your community You are an ocean

  1.  TechnologyWe have received a $3000.00 grant from Telus to purchase materials for our makerspaces.  The money will be split between the learning commons maker space and the science makerspace.  We are very excited about this partnership with Telus and we hope this is something we can continue in the future.  We are in the process of purchasing more chromebooks with our own money.  We will not be receiving any computers from the board this year.

  1.  Christmas celebrationwe will be having a sing-along on the last day before Christmas.  This event will be planned by the teachers and the School Council – all parents are welcome to this event.starr gymnastics
  2. Future ProgramsIn February we will be starting the STARR Gymnastics program.  This is a great program for kids and every student will get four sessions with the STAR Gymnastics instructors.  After the program finishes, we will offer a lunch-time gymnastics program for students who would like to continue their gymnastics training.  The lunchtime program will be subsidized for all parents who require one.
  3. Christmas Food HampersHoly Trinity High School will again be helping us by providing family support at Christmas.  This year, instead of hampers, we will be providing gift cards to families in need.  We will be contacting families over the next few days to find out what store they would like their gift card to come from.  If you are in need of some assistance, please let us know by calling the school.  We are also working to make sure all our students have the appropriate winter wear for the coming cold months.  If you need boots, hats or snowsuits, please let us know and we will arrange for you to get what you need.

November Teacher Report – Parent Council, November 26, 2015

Girls and Boys Volleyball

  • Both teams attended tournaments at St. George Catholic School and represented St. Anthony very well, both in terms of their skills (both teams won 5 out of their 7 games) and team spirit!

Pedestrian Safety Presentations

  • A School crossing guard visited and reviewed the rules of street safety – in particular crossing at the lights, ensuring eye contact with drivers and staying within the white lines of the crossing area.

Remembrance Day Celebration

  • Various classes presented poems they had learned, in both English and French. It was the 100th anniversary of the poem “In Flanders Field” so special attention was given to this work. Mr. McGuire live-streamed the ceremony from the War Museum.

Waste Audit

  • This week St. Anthony Catholic School held the first school wide waste audit for the 2015-2016 school year. With the help of several students and staff, we gathered garbage, recycling, and compost materials for a 24 hour period. We then weighed the clear plastic garbage bags and filled in the worksheets, assessing all the data visually. The results indicate that we are doing very well with the compost (food waste and organics measured at 90%) and recycling (paper, cardboard, and newsprint measured at 80%). Garbage was the area we can improve on this school year. In the garbage bags, we found materials that can be composted like food leftovers, pencil shavings. We also found “boomerang” items. These are things that students are encouraged to bring back home for recycling such as yogurt/fruit/jello cups, plastic spoons, and juice boxes. We will have another school wide waste audit in the winter months and hope to see some improvement in the area of garbage.
  • Students from the Green Club will present the findings at our next assembly.
  • Anthony is working on the eco-school application in the hopes of achieving silver status..or maybe even gold!

Looking at Pictures Presentation

  • The Grades 1, 2, 3 /4 and 5 / 6 attended in-school presentation from a volunteer from the National Gallery of Canada. She lead us on an interactive journey towards greater art appreciation using a number of visual art reproductions borrowed from the gallery.

Upcoming Advent Liturgies

  • 30 – 1:45 p.m.
  • December 7: 10:00 a.m.
  • December 14: 10:00 a.m.
  • During Advent we have an outreach project – this year each class will make cards for the residents of St. Vincent Hospital – a long term care facility in our community. Representatives from each class will bring the school cards to the hospital and enjoy a sing-along with residents at some point during the final week before holidays.

FDK News Week of November 23-27
Mrs. Draper’s Class

The FDK classes will begin to prepare for winter.  We will be hibernating bears this week in our very own bear cave.  Students can bring in a stuffed toy (hopefully, one that they are not to attached to) or one will be provided for them to walk to our bear cave.  We will place our stuffed animals in the cave and we will wait until Springtime to wake up our bears!
We enjoyed measuring, mixing and making muffins last week.  We also found out how to measure our feet and our hands.  Students enjoyed comparing their results and using cubes to show how long their feet and hands are.
We will also prepare for our Advent mass that will take place on Monday November 30, 2015 at 1:30pm in Learning Commons.
The FDK class will prepare a song to sing “Take a Walk to Christmas”.  We will send home the words for you to sing along at home too.
We look forward to preparing for this very special Advent Season!

Ms. Myers Grade One Class:

This week we continue our math unit on patterning. The “Wonderful Ones” will have opportunities to create, extend, represent, and record a variety of patterns and see how patterns help us make predictions and solve problems. We will discuss “attributes” of a pattern (things such as colour, shape, size, and design) and the “pattern core” (the part of the pattern that repeats).  In reading we will work on developing our understanding of a story by focusing on specific vocabulary.  At the end of the week, ask your child to tell you about our “WOW” words – those new words they have learned from our story Sheila Rae, The Brave!  On Thursday we will participate in a “Looking at Pictures” presentation. A volunteer from the National Gallery of Canada will lead us on an interactive journey towards greater art appreciation using a number of visual art reproductions.  A reminder that November homework is due this week.

Ms. Moga Grade 2 Class:

We had a great 4 days last week full of learning! We worked on retelling fictional texts (e.g. The Little Red Hen, and A Pocket for Corduroy). Students are learning that there are four parts to a retell: characters, setting, problem, event (told in order), and a solution. This is something they can practice while reading at home.

This week, we will be wrapping up our science reports on various animals and then looking at the human impact on animals, and animal impact on humans. In math, we will be finishing up graphing by conducting surveys, and showing our data using pictographs, bar graphs, and line plots. In religion, we will continue discussing saints and the Beatitudes, which will take us into the beginning of Advent next week. Finally, in art we are wrapping up with symmetry; the students should be finished their patter block plates this week.

I look forward to another great week in grade 2!

Mrs. Rupnik’s Class

We begin the week with showcasing our class certificate and the St. Anthony Superstars trophy. Last week the Primary Language Class received this award for our teamwork and cooperation. Way to go, boys and girls! I am very proud of you. Would you like to read the class a short story? As mentioned at our Parent-Teacher Conferences, consider dropping me a note in the agenda.  The students love having moms/dads visit and read us a story. This week, we will begin to talk about “saying sorry” using stories from our Room 14 Social Language Program. Please remember that the Ottawa Catholic School Board provides students with access to digital resources to use at home. To access the student portal page, please navigate to St. Anthony Catholic School website page (http://san.ocsb.ca/) and access the student portal page from there.  Homework calendars for the month of November on due back to school on Friday, November 27, 2015.

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

The last full week of November! Wow! Time flies when you are learning lots!

Our class engaged in wonderful discussions on being a good digital citizen.  We watched videos and completed activities related to our discussions.  The students were extremely focused and brought many thoughtful ideas surrounding this important topic.  We will continue with our digital citizenship lessons this week.

Our math test on Addition and Subtraction is scheduled for Tuesday.  The students have completed review lessons in class and online, using the Nelson Math website. They will be able to demonstrate their understanding and the use of these concepts as they apply them on the test.

The students homework book will be coming home today with a unique assignment enclosed.  They will be preparing for a book talk. They are to choose a chapter book of their choice and at their reading level.  They must read the book and prepare a talk about the book that they will present to the class the week of December 7th.  The details and an outline can be found in their homework duotang that they will be bringing home today. I look forward to hearing all about their chosen book.

Please check our class calendar for upcoming events and due dates of class assignments.

Thank you for your ongoing support!

Have a great week!

Ms. Colaiacovo’s Grade 5/6 Class

As we bid a fond farewell to November next week and anticipate a very busy December, here are are few updates from the grade 5/6 class:
We are finishing up patterning and algebra in Math and will soon begin a study of geometry. Please remind your child that regular review of math concepts at home is essential to their continued learning in class. In Language Arts, we will finish our study of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes and further investigate ways in which we can spread a message of peace to others. We are also completing our Space unit in Science and will move on to Biodiversity in the Understanding Life Systems strand. We have had opportunity to focus on and discuss the importance of being a good digital citizen, and we will finish this great program in the coming week.
This is the last week that we will be attending the Y Kids Academy program. The students and I have enjoyed learning about the benefits of being physically active and the staff at the Y has been amazing!
On December 3, the grade 5/6 class will be holding a “cake auction” to kick off our fundraising efforts for the grade 6 year-end trip. Any and all donations of cakes from you, the 5/6 parent community will be greatly appreciated. More information will follow in a separate letter. In addition, we will be further augmenting our fund-raising by selling popcorn to the students in the school on a bi-monthly basis (alternating Fridays to the pizza days).
As always, if you any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at the school.

Full Day Kindergarten News!  Week of November 9-13th.

Our FDK students enjoyed some of the warmer weather we experienced last week.  We enjoy our time on the big yard from 8:30-8:45 am for both FDK1 and FDK2,  as well as 11:35-12:15 with the whole school.  Our FDK class also spends time outside on the smaller daycare yard from 2:30-2:50pm, weather permitting.  It is great to get outside with our FDK classes and students enjoy this time playing actively, connecting with friends and siblings and also exploring nature, the leaves and sand area!  Thank you for sending warm mitts, hats and jackets as we know colder weather is on the way!!
Students also have scheduled gym times and a weekly visits to the learning commons to visit our librarian, Mrs. Iverson.
We are working on “Teamwork” and showing that we are team players.  We are signing songs about teamwork and showing excellent cooperation and participation in this area!
We will be holding interviews for three days, November 10th, 11th and 12th to make sure we see all of our parents.  We are looking forward to your scheduled visit this week.  Please do not hesitate to contact us if needed at 613-235-0340, if you need to reschedule or change your interview.

Our focus this week will be on Remembrance Day.  We will be attending the ceremony in our school gym and learning the importance of this special day.

Full Day Kindergarten News!  Week of November 16-20th.

Congratulations to FDK1 this week, we are Superstars for the week and we won a trophy to keep in our class for the week.  Students are very motivated by our Superstar award and have shown amazing teamwork, respect, and cooperation.
This week we will begin to learn how we prepare for winter, how animals get ready for winter and the changes that are coming!  We will read stories that focus on this topic such as “Bear Snores On” and singing songs such as “Hibernation, Winter Hibernation!”
Students loved the story about “”If You Give A Mouse a Muffin”.   We will be using this story to start a new unit on Measurement in Math, where students will measure out ingredients to make our own muffins.  We will also start to measure our hands, feet and other items using cubes.  Many hands-on activities make learning fun and interactive.
Thank you for your participation in our Parent-Teacher Interviews.  We enjoyed sharing great information with you about your child and we appreciate your commitment to establishing consistent communication between home and school!
There will be a PD Day on Friday November 20th!  No school for students on this day!  We are looking forward to a great week of learning, cooperating and sharing!

Ms. Myer’s Class

As the “Wonderful Ones” marked Remembrance Day on November 11th, we took the opportunity to think carefully about how each of us can be an instrument of God’s peace. We read the story I Call My Hand Gentle  and the children came up with some great ideas of how they could use their hands in peaceful, positive ways. The coming week is “Bullying Awareness and Prevention” week across schools in Ontario. We will continue to explore the story of the Good Samaritan, thinking of ways we can be like the Samaritan. In math we will focus on sorting objects into groups based on various attributes (i.e. the objects’ colour, size, shape, design, or use). You can reinforce this concept at home by sorting items you have (e.g. toys, socks, kitchen objects) into 2 or 3 groups and asking your child to try to guess what rule you used to sort the objects. Thank you to all parents who took the time to attend their child’s parent-teacher interview last week.   Your insight and feedback is invaluable. We look forward to a short but busy week! Friday, November 20 is a P. D. day – no school for students!

Ms. Moga’s Grade 2 Class

We had another great week in grade 2 with lots of learning taking place! We looked at non-fiction books and discussed the different features such as headings, labels, the index, and captions. This also helped with our animal research assignments in science. In math, we learned about concrete graphs and pictographs.

Friday is a PD day this week; therefore we only have four days of school. We are continuing many of our units. In gym, we will learn another game called “Clean House” and continue to play Newcombe ball. In religion, we will discuss different saints and how they lived their lives like Jesus. In language, we will begin to retell fiction texts using a Go Map graphic organizer (putting our retell into writing). We will continue to read non-fiction texts and use the different features to help us determine what is important. In art, we are continuing to examine symmetry and to produce pieces of art that demonstrate symmetry. Finally, in math we are continuing with graphing; specifically,  we will learn about calendar data and bar graphs.

Mrs. Rupnik’s Class

Thank-you for coming to our scheduled Parent-Teacher Conferences at St. Anthony Catholic School.  Research has shown over and over again that the most successful students have a high percentage of parent involvement.  This week we will continue to work on making connections to better understand stories we read.  A rhyming booklet will be sent on Thursday for homework. Please sit with your child and review the rhyming words in the booklet. Rhyming is important because it helps prepare children for early reading and it also helps to support oral language development. Friday, November 20 is a PD Day and school will be closed.

News from Ms. Manzoli’s  Grade 3/4  class

Thank you to all the parents who were able to come out to parent teacher interviews.  Having the time to discuss your child’s progress is an important part in your child’s learning.  As we move forward, students will be able to continue working on their learning goals for the rest of this term.

Reminder that this week is a short week for the students.  Friday is a PD day for all students and there will be no classes.  Students are working very hard to maintain their stamina during our daily 5 stations during language.  We continue to work on recount writing using the hamburger model for paragraphs.  This week we will begin writing about a favourite event.  In math, we continue with patterns and will look at patterns on grids.  A reminder to check your child’s agendas for instructions on another math program called Mathletics.  Passwords and usernames will be handed out.

This week marks the beginning of Bully Awareness, we will be having several discussions about what makes a bully a bully and how we deal with certain situations.  We will also begin various lessons on Being a good digital citizen where the children will learn how our digital world can be a place where bulliness occurs.  Below you will find the cover a book that we will explore this week.     don't laugh at me      Have a great week.

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

The students participated in a wonderful school-wide ceremony to commemorate Remembrance Day.  This related directly to the activities the students completed in the classroom.  The students worked cooperatively to create a beautiful poppy cross, that was proudly displayed during the ceremony, and doves that were decorated with ideas of peace. The Grade 4/5 team has an appreciation for how fortunate we are to live in such a peaceful and free country like Canada.

It was great to meet parents during interviews or speak with parents on the phone. Your continued support in your child’s education makes for greater gains in your child’s learning.

Thank you!!

The students will be learning how to be a “Good Digital Citizen” through focussed lessons.  It is important with all the technology that is available to our students that they respect it and use it appropriately and safely. As the week progresses ask your child some of the lessons they have learned on how to be a good Digital Citizen.

Students should continue to read each evening and use Raz Kids to help with reading and comprehension. The students will be having a math test on Addition and Subtraction early next week so they should be practicing these concepts at home.  Nelson Math is a good website they can use for review.

Have a wonderful week!

The girls volleyball team attended the School Board tournament last Thursday at St. George School. St. Anthony Catholic was well represented by 10 terrific team members!  All the lunchtime practice paid off as the girls won 5 out of 7 games, placing third overall. Their teamwork and spirit were a winning combination!  Way to go, girls!!
