It was great to meet so many of you on our first day of school! If you were not able to attend, here is a link to a short slide presentation highlighting some important information shared on Day 1! please click on the link above

We are looking forward to another busy week. As we become more familiar with class and school routines, we will explore the concept of responsibility – one of our important learning skills. We will read a story called How Dinosaurs Go to School and think about how being responsible can help make our class and school a happy and safe place for everyone. Thank you for attending to notes and requests that are sent home in your child’s agenda. The “Wonderful Ones” are becoming increasingly responsible as they bring their agendas home and back to school each day! Check back next week when our class schedule should be ready for posting!

Ms. Draper’s grade 2 class The Second Week in Second Grade!

We had a great first week of learning and getting to know each other in our Grade 2 class community.  We reviewed our classroom routines and had the opportunity to really get to know one another through different activities such as an All About Me poster and The Best Part of Me picture and story.  The students loved the book ” God’s Dream.”  Our focus in Math will be learning about patterns in our environment.  We will first focus on sorting objects by their different attributes (shape, color , size..) then use what we know to identify what is changing in a pattern.  At home, look for patterns in your environment with your child.  Ask your child to explain what is changing and to tell you what will come next in the pattern.
Students will be bringing home their Homework books this week.  It includes a note about homework and a fun activity called The Me Museum.  Enjoy!

News this week…

The grade ¾ ‘s had a busy week getting routines and rules into play.  This week we continue reviewing the expectations of the class.  We now have a class contact that the students brought home to read to you.  Please reinforce the importance of these rules.

This week we also begin our language program. The students have been introduced to what we call “DAILY 5” as part of the language instruction.  There are 5 stations that they will practice throughout the next month.  Each week one station will be practiced.

We start will READING TO SELF.  My goal… Why is it important to stay in one spot? Why is it important to start right away? Why is it important to work on your stamina? Why is it important to read quietly?

Students will be bringing home their first part of homework which is their reading folder.

In math we have begun with number sense and numeration.  Looking at numbers and how we use them.  This week we will be working on Place Value.  Gr.3, 3 digit numbers; Gr. 4, 4 and more digit numbers.

On Monday’s we visit the library and on Monday’s and Wednesday’s we will be going to the gym.  Very important that the students have indoor shoes to change into.

That is it for now. : )

Welcome back to St. Anthony!

Principal’s Note: Welcome to a new year!

Hello everyone!  I hope that everyone has had a great summer. I was able to see many students this summer atChristie Lake Camp
we had a great group there this summer and it was wonderful to see how our emphasis on developing community partnerships translated into so many students having a great camp experience.

We continued to work with Ecology Ottawa andEvergreen this summer and we are currently adding soil and mulch in preparation for planting in our yard that will take place in September.
You can see in the photo above Carleton University students working on the yard in early August.

We have spent the summer working with a wonderful group of community volunteers to put together the first St. Anthony Gale/Reunion and fundraiser.  This will be a wonderful event that will bring former teachers administrators and students together to celebrate the heritage of St. Anthony School and Dante Academy.
The event will be held on September 26 and there is a wealth of information about the event here at this special website  designed for the event.

We continue to develop and improve our partnerships in the community.  We will continue to work with the Somerset West Community Health Center .
We also plan to work closer with Ottawa Community Immigrant Services OCISO to better serve the parent community.

We are in the process of developing programming for our students  again this year we will again be offering table tennis lessons, we will continue to have a very active Green Team and we will continue to develop our makerspace in our learning commons.  We hope to continue with arts programming based on our ability to raise funding.

For daily information on what is going on at St. Anthony please check on social media feeds.

Ms Draper’s plan for this week

Welcome to Grade 2!
The grade 2 students will spend our first week back at school getting to know each other and practicing our classroom routines.  We have many exciting learning opportunities planned for this year and we will get started by sharing stories about our summer, playing friendship Bingo, reading “First Day Jitters” and making connections to some of our feelings about returning to school for another great year.  There will be a few projects to get us started on the right track and to make sure I get to know your child.  We will complete an “All About Me” poster, “The Best Part of Me” art activity and a shared graph for Math about how we get to school!  Looking forward to a great week of learning in Grade 2!  Mrs. Draper

Teacher notes for the week of April 13 – 17

Ms Rupnik’s Class

Reminder that Retelling Journals with the story ‘There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Chick’ are due back on Monday, April 13.  We will introduce narrative writing this week. Narrative writing gives students the opportunity to be creative and tell/write a story. We will begin this unit by looking at different stories and identifying components of a good narrative (for example: characters, settings, problems, sequence of events, solutions). Take the time this week to tell a story or two to your childabout a moment or event that means a lot to you.

Happy Easter!  The children enjoyed a special “egg hunt” where they had to read the clues the Easter Bunny left for each of them in order to find their egg!  As well, we have decorated a beautiful Easter Tree to celebrate this special season of Easter. On Tuesday, April 14th, we will attend our school Easter Mass. A representative from the Shepherd’s of Good Hope will pick up our Lenten food drive donations at that time. Thanks to all of you who showed such generosity! Next week we will participate in a special “Maker Space” that is connected to our science inquiry about energy. The children will be working with circuits to see how electricity is conducted. In math, we continue to work with money – working specifically on recognizing the value of each coin. To reinforce these concepts at home, provide your child with opportunities to count the change in your wallet, or perhaps a piggy bank…real-life experiences are so helpful!!

This week’s word wall words will be: INTO, DOWN, WORK, PARK, and FUNNY. In Math we will focus on 3-D shapes this week. The students find it very neat how many shapes there are and how many shapes we use to build stuff with. I encourage you to challenge your child to find as many 2-D and 3-D shapes at home and in your neighbourhoods. In language, we will learn more about persuasive writing (how to convince someone to let you do something). We will work in our language stations and do some work with our new word wall words. In science, we are studying liquids and solids. We hope to be doing a couple of experiments in class! We will also continue with our religion lessons geared towards preparing our grade 2 students for their Reconciliation and First Communion. Some of the students still have library books that have not been returned. We have library every Monday and they can only take out a new book if they have returned the one they already have. Please check your child’s bag and ask them if they have their library book. Let’s hope Mother Nature is on our side and we get nice, warm, sunny weather! God Bless!
Ms Manzoli’s class
Welcome to the Easter season, we will be celebrating on Tuesday April 14 at 9:00 am at St. Anthony Catholic Church. April is poetry month the class will be listening and reading various styles of poetry and in writing will create acrostic poems for Earth Day. In math, we have been learning about fractions, reinforce this concept at home using everyday things. The terms we have learned are one half, one quarter, one eighth and a whole. This week we will begin our new unit in family life, take some time to talk to your children about questions they may be wondering about. Have a great week.
Mrs. Manzoli

Our first day at St. Anthony

We had a great day together at St. Anthony!  This morning, the kids were lined up ten minutes before school even started!

We all stood outside in the summer sun and realized we were ready for an exciting year.

Everyone found their class, no one got lost and the staff were very happy to see everyone again.  We have lots of new staff this year – including me – but that didn’t seem to matter at all.  St. Anthony has a system and it works really well.

Kids were playing soccer by the first recess.  The play structure was busy all day and kids loved being in the wonderful shade provided by our beautiful trees.

I took lots of photos – over 60 at last count.  Included in these photos is a class shot for every class in the school.  At the end of the year at the final slide show, the kids will get a chance to see how much they have changed in ten short months!  You can se all the flickr photos here.

We pledge to make learning visible for all of you this year – through this blog, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and Instagram.  We want to keep you involved and informed on what is going on at your school!

What’s coming up?

  • Extended Day Care starts tomorrow
  • JK Orientation continues
  • Our opening assembly will be this Friday at 2:15
  • Please remember to hand in verification sheets and the $20.00 student activity fee

Next few weeks

Our Program Night will be Tuesday, September 16

We will soon be looking to form our School Council for 2014-2015 – this is a very important volunteer position and we need as many people as we can get to fill a number of important roles.

So, on to day two!!
