FDK News Week of January 25-January 29, 2016

The FDK students had a great week despite some of the colder days.  If temperatures are below -25 degrees we keep all students indoors for their recess time and outdoor play.  Thank you for all your efforts to send in extra mitts and socks.  Please let our FDK team know if you require anything to keep your child warm throughout the winter months, extra snowsuits, mitts and hats are available at our school.

The FDK Groups participated in an excellent workshop from Hydro Ottawa on Thursday.  This interactive workshop had all students engaged and really emphasized  “safety first!”  Ask your child about ways they can stay safe.

We will continue to explore 2-dimensional shapes such as triangles, squares, circles and rectangles through free exploration using pattern and attribute blocks and shapes.  Students began building 3-dimensional structures using a variety of materials such as foam mats, marshmallows and toothpicks.  It is amazing to see what they create when we give them hands-on materials to explore and inquire!
We will have a school-wide Reading Buddy Day for Family Literacy Day on Wednesday, January 27th, 2016.  A special thank you to Mrs. Iverson, our amazing librarian, for coordinating this great initiative!  Feel free to join us at 10:30 am to snuggle up on a bean bag or comfy chair in our Learning Commons to read!
Looking forward to a snow-filled week of fun and learning!

The FDK Team

Ms. Myers’ Grade One Class

Congratulations to those students who led the morning announcements last week. A terrific job was done by all! Our school community was impressed with the “Wonderful Ones” confidence and ability! We are wrapping up our study of linear measurement this week and will investigate various ways whole numbers are composed (e.g. 5 is the same as 2+3, 4+1, 1+4, etc.) Seeing the parts that make up the whole number helps your child develop flexibility with numbers and build important addition and subtraction computation strategies. In science will begin to explore the needs of living things as we prepare for our trip to the Mill of Kintail Conservation Area, February 11th. Kindly return permission forms for this trip by Friday. This Wednesday is “Family Literacy Day.” We will celebrate here at school by reading with “buddies” in another class during our library time. Check out this link for ideas of things you can do as a family to promote and celebrate literacy:  http://abclifeliteracy.ca/family-literacy.Thank you for reminding your child to complete and return their January homework this week!

Grade Two Ms.  Moga

We had another busy and productive week in Grade 2. The students conducted a “Penny Slide” experiment in science. They glued different materials to the bottoms of pennies and measured how high they had to lift a cookie sheet to get the pennies to slide. After, we discussed the slope of the cookie sheet and thought about what effect the materials on the pennies had on their ability to slide.

In math, we will be wrapping up two-digit addition and subtraction. The students will be trying word problems where they have to decide which operation to use. Our next unit will be geometry.
In language, we will be refocusing on the reading comprehension strategy of asking questions, and wrapping up the good copies of the descriptive paragraphs.
Please return the permission form for our trip to The Mill of Kintail if you have not already done so.
Have a great week!
Ms. Moga

Mrs. Manzoli`s Stars……

Hard to believe that we are in the final week of January.  Where does the time go?

As we enter into this week we will be consolidating some of the learning that went on.

Homework was not handed out last week.  Instead the students will be assigned a project this week on the topic of being a ‘Good Digital Citizen’ and how to leave a positive digital footprint.  They will have the week to design how they will present the information to the class.

In Language, we continue at looking at descriptive writing using the hamburger model to write a paragraph.  Using adjectives to describe our nouns will be the focus.  In Reading, we focus on visualizing what we read in order to understand the main idea of the stories we read.  On Wednesday we mark Literacy Day and will be able to practice our reading abilities as we participate in a school-wide reading buddies.  Try to set aside some time to hear you children read to you 🙂 and check out  www.abclifeliteracy.ca  for further activities you can share at home.

In Math, we will move into our unit on measuring time, temperature and the value of money.  You can help in the learning with these sometimes difficult concepts by doing daily activities at home.  (Have your child tell you the time to the hour, half hour and quarter hour, watch the weather channel and record the weekly temperatures, count their coins in their piggy banks).

Grade 3 Jan 24

Reminders:

  • Library book for Monday
  • Friends for Life on Thursday
  • Pizza Day on Friday

Have a great week!

Mrs. Manzoli

Mrs. Rupnik’s Class

This week in the Primary Language Class, we will work on a new writing form called “procedural writing”.  The students were introduced to procedural writing last week when we created secret Valentine cards.  Procedural writing involves giving clear directions or steps on how to do something. Please note that the January homework calendar is due back on Wednesday, January 27, 2016. New February homework calendars arrive home next Monday. Please work with your child to complete these activities daily. The activities are short and require about 5 minutes to complete. Most activities are done orally and do not have a written component. In addition to the homework calendar activities, it is very beneficial to read to and with your child every night. Please note that our RAZ Kids account was removed because of a system error.  It is now reactivated and all students have access again.

Site visits take 30-45 minutes and have two main parts:

  1. Conversation: Members of the Eco-Team will have a conversation guided by questions. Sample of question listed below.
  2. Walkabout: A short walkabout will take place to assess energy and waste practices. The assessor will ask to see specific areas of the school (e.g., garbage/recycling collection site, classrooms, cafeteria, computer lab etc.) and may ask about specific initiatives relating to the information found in the school’s application.

Points may be awarded or deducted based on the assessor’s observations.

Note: All schools will be submitting paperless portfolios in 2015. Online portfolio documents will be assessed prior to the assessor’s arrival at each school.

Finalization process: Assessors will review the site visit observations/notes and submit the assessed application to Ontario Eco-Schools staff for final review. Ms Myers’ Class- Grade 1

Our trip to Gatineau Park was a great success!  The weather was perfect and the bugs stayed away!

Thanks to our parent volunteers who help make these experiences possible. In math this week we will be exploring probability – the likelihood that something will or won’t occur. On Tuesday we hope that Ms. Wilcox, our Public Health Nurse, will make it in for her visit with us to talk about active transportation and safety. A June newsletter will be going home on Monday. As well, the “Wonderful Ones” will be leading the Morning Announcements (their last time before they are in Grade 2!!). If your child has been asked to say a prayer, please have them practice reading it aloud to you in preparation. We look forward to another short but busy week – Friday, June 5 is a P.D. day!

Mr. Ryan’s Grade 1/2 class

Welcome June! Let’s pray for a beautiful last month to the school year! Homework calendars will be sent homeTuesday. I am still waiting for a few of the students to submit their May homework folders. Last week we had an amazing time at Gatineau Park on our field trip. The children learned a lot about animals, insects, plant life, and habitats. It was a very well organized day and a very big thank you to all of our parent volunteers that were able to accompany. Also, a very big thank you to Ms. Myers for organizing such a fun experience for our students! We did not have our class pic-nic last week and will have it this Wednesday. Again, everything will be provided. They students just need to bring their healthy appetites! In math this week we are learning about fractions. In Language, we are going to be doing word wall activities and working in our language stations. In science, we are learning about living things and plants. A reminder that this Friday is a PD Day and there is no school for students. Hoping everyone has a blessed week!

Ms. Rupnik’s PLC Class

June homework calendars come home on Monday, June 1, 2015. The Google short/long vowel books will be sent home on Monday as well. Please take some time to sit with your child and have him/her read it to you!  I hope you are as proud of their hard work as I am.  We will also continue our work on the play Chicken Little and begin to add gesture/actions to our words.  Have him/her practise with you at home daily.  Invitations will be sent home at the end of the week. We look forward to having you visit with us.

Depave Paradise

3

Depave Paradise is back!

Last year, we removed more than 100 square meters of asphalt from the Kitchissippi Church parking lot.

This year, with the help of the community, we’re going to do the same for St. Anthony Catholic School.

Depave Paradise addresses the proliferation of hard surfaces in modern urban environments through the primal act of ripping up unused pavement and replacing it with soil and vegetation. Volunteers “liberate the soil,” using hand tools to pry up the pavement. Native plants, bushes and trees are then planted to act as filters and sponges for polluted stormwater runoff. The events attract media and political attention, and raise awareness of the issues surrounding the urban water cycle, while making measurable environmental impacts, reducing runoff and contamination and increasing green space.

June 20th is depaving day – food, friends, activities and a handful of pry bars is all we need to have a good time and make Ottawa just that much greener.

If you’d like to get involved please see our volunteer sign-up page.

Teacher Notes for the week

Ms Rupnik’s Class

This week in the Primary Language Class, we will spend time observing and watering our little vegetable garden we started 2 last weeks ago with the Growing up Organic organization. We will also work on our play ‘Chicken Little’. In our Social Language program, we will continue to focus on using self-control at school and at home.

Ms Myers class

This Tuesday morning we will be going on our trip Gatineau Park. Please listen to the forecast for the day so that your child is prepared for the weather. Undoubtedly, there will be bugs!  Long sleeve shirts and long pants will help protect your child from unwanted bites.  As well, please pack a healthy lunch that includes water. We will be eating our lunch at the park following our hike. In math we have been practicing the strategies of “counting on” and “making ten” to help us add numbers efficiently. This week we will practice our “double facts” (2+2, 3+3, etc.). The grade ones and grade 4/5 class did a super job of introducing the next “St. Anthony Superstars” goal – “I Have a Voice” at last week’s assembly. Way to go!

Tooth Injury: What should you do?

An avulsed tooth is one that has been completely knocked out of its place. This is a time dependant injury.

The best outcome requires quick action.

1) Find the tooth.

2) Pick up the tooth by the crown. It is the part that is used to chew

3) Gently rinse the tooth with distilled water or milk for a few seconds. Do not scrub the tooth. Only use chlorinated tap

water as a last choice, because it may damage the root. Adult teeth should be immediately replaced into its hole

whenever possible. Hold the tooth by the crown and put it back firmly into the hole, root first. The root will usually “click” into

place. Then ask the child to bite down gently on a gauze or cloth. Take the child to the dentist as soon as possible. If the

tooth cannot be replaced in its hole, it should be stored in cold milk or saliva until transferred to the dentist. Baby teeth should not be replanted as it could damage the adult tooth formation. The child should see the dentist as soon as possible.

If a child shows any sign of a head injury such as unconsciousness, nausea or headache, call 911.

Need more information? Talk to your dentist or dental hygienist or call the Ottawa Public Health Information Line at 613-580-6744.

Your drink is sweeter than you think!

Most of the sugar in your day comes from what you drink. We think about sugar in the food we eat but many popular drinks can also have a lot of sugar.

Why you should care:

• Filling up on sugary drinks makes you less hungry for healthier foods.

• Children’s small tummies can fill up on sugar fast.

• Sugary drinks can cause tooth decay.

When choosing a drink remember:

• Water and milk are the best choices.

• Most fruit drinks have no real fruit.

• Read labels and pick drinks with the least amount of sugar.

• If sugar is first in the ingredient list then it’s high in sugar.

• Kids are watching what you drink: your choice impacts theirs!

2.  Pizza Days!  We will be running pizza days twice a month starting January 30th.  Forms for pizza have gone home and are due back January 20th.  This will be our school fundraiser for the year.  All profit will be going directly back into the classroom.

3.  Second session Milk Programbegins January 19th and goes to April 10th.  This program is intended as a fundraiser as well.  We will report on the proceeds from this year’s program to School Council in June.

4.  EQAO – we are starting to work on EQAO preparation now.  Teachers will be meeting over the next week to plan strategies to assist all students in preparation for the tests in May and June.  This school does extremely well in EQAO and we plan to continue our upward trend.  In reading and writing we continue to improve from grade 3 to grade 6.  In math, the trend is not as strong, but we have a team of teachers working on math instruction this year and this could have a positive impact on how are students do.  The most important thing is to start early to identify the students are risk in the areas of reading, writing and math.

5.  First Term Report Cards – these will be coming out February 13th.  We will not hold a formal meeting night this round, but parents can schedule a meeting with their classroom teacher to discuss the term I results.  Teachers will also be contacting parents where there are areas of concern.

EQAO Results

Over the next few posts, I am going to feature in graphic form the EQAO results from 2013 – 2014 for grade 3 and 6.  We can learn a tremendous amount about our school community by reviewing and discussing these results.

Today – parent engagement in the areas of reading, computer use, agendas and generally talking about school.

EQAO Results

I am continuing presenting a series of slides for staff and parents on last year’s EQAO results.  Today, I am featuring two slides on parent engagement – what percentage of parents are involved in their sons and daughters education?  The results are based on the student questionnaires taken during testing last year.  What do these results tell us?

Parent engagement - grade 6
Parent engagement – grade 3 2014

While 62% of grade 3 students say they talk about school with their parents, only 19% say they read with their parents and 38% use a computer together on a regular basis.  Is there anything we can do to improve these results?  Do these results have an impact on our students’ scores?

Parent engagement Grade 6 2014
Parent engagement Grade 6 2014

If we look at the grade 6 results, we can see that 9% of students read with their parents one to three times a week, O% of parents read to their children daily.  Only 9% of parents use the computer with their children daily.  Clearly this is a trend that we have to take seriously.  Is there anything we can do to encourage parents to become more engaged in the work of their children?

This is something we all need to work on together if we want to improve our results on EQAO testing.  How can we do this?

Tomorrow – student attitudes towards reading and writing.
