Teacher Notes

Ms Myers class

We had a spectacular time at the Summer Solstice Festival!  Thanks so much to all our volunteers who came out to give us a hand!  The Pow-Wow dances were amazing!  This week we will wrap things up by taking a look at all the things we have accomplished this year in Grade 1. Report cards will go home with your child on Wednesday and our final day together will be Thursday, June 25. Friday is a P.D. for all students. I’d like to wish all the “Wonderful Ones” and their families a restful and fun-filled summer!  Thank you for all your support this year. School resumes on Tuesday, September 8, 2015!!

Mrs. Rupnik’s Primary Language Class:

It was wonderful to see so many family members at our performances of “Chicken Little” last week.  The children did a wonderful job memorizing their lines and performing their roles in front of different audiences. Way to go, boys and girls!

Thank-you for all your support and assistance this school year. As parents, you play a vital part in helping children meet success. Over the summer vacation, I strongly encourage you to read to your child daily and to practise writing by using the word wall words that we have been working on all year. I have included a list of recommended activities on our last class newsletter.  Doing just one or two of these activities each day over the summer break will help to keep your child working and learning. Enjoy a happy and safe summer!

Depave Paradise! The beginning of the greening of St. Anthony School

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Today we starting on a great journey that will change the face of St. Anthony School.  A group of dedicated volunteers from Ecology Ottawa, teachers, parents and one student worked up to seven hours to cut into tones of pavement and gravel.  We filled an entire dumpster and created a huge pile of gravel too – all of this will be recycled by our contractor whose main job so far has been to cut into the old asphalt so we could pry it up and remove it from the yard.

The project was funded by Green Communities Canada who received funding from RBC .  Evergreen Canada did the design work and Ecology Ottawa administered the entire project.  What a great group of partners.  I am so grateful that there are foundations and corporations that really want to get to work with schools like ours to make a better environment for our kids.  This is how we must do things, look for great community partners who will continue to work with our school to fund depaving, the arts, recreation programming – anything that will make the educational experience richer for our students.

We have worked with so many wonderful groups this year – Opera Lyra, Little Horn Theatre, Table Tennis Canada, Evergreen Canada, Young Rembrandts, Learn to Play, Fun 2 Run, MASC, Organic Growers of Ottawa, Big Kid Entertainment, Christie Lake Kids,  the YMCA, Social Rec Connect and Somerset West Community Health Center, and all our political representatives- all these groups and individuals have worked hard to provide a richer environment for our students.  What a great privilege to work in such a wonderful community!

I want to thank all the groups who are working hard to give our kids something special as part of their educational experience.  We really appreciate all you have done and all the time and resources you have poured into our school.  You are part of our community and you are all doing wonderful work.

With help from our partners and new ones to come, we will continue our depaving work at St. Anthony and will continue to dig up the rotting asphalt that retains stormwater and winer melt, creates hazards for our kids and actually contributes to Global Warming.

A great day for our school – thank-you to all the volunteers and foundations that made this possible!

 Ecoschool Site Visit- AM

Site visits take 30-45 minutes and have two main parts:

  1. Conversation: Members of the Eco-Team will have a conversation guided by questions. Sample of question listed below.
  2. Walkabout: A short walkabout will take place to assess energy and waste practices. The assessor will ask to see specific areas of the school (e.g., garbage/recycling collection site, classrooms, cafeteria, computer lab etc.) and may ask about specific initiatives relating to the information found in the school’s application.

Points may be awarded or deducted based on the assessor’s observations.

Note: All schools will be submitting paperless portfolios in 2015. Online portfolio documents will be assessed prior to the assessor’s arrival at each school.

Finalization process: Assessors will review the site visit observations/notes and submit the assessed application to Ontario Eco-Schools staff for final review. Board representatives will be advised of the school’s standing when all the schools in the board have been assessed. This will take place before the end of the school year.

Teacher Notes for the Week of June 1 – 5

Ms Myers’ Class- Grade 1

Our trip to Gatineau Park was a great success!  The weather was perfect and the bugs stayed away!

Thanks to our parent volunteers who help make these experiences possible. In math this week we will be exploring probability – the likelihood that something will or won’t occur. On Tuesday we hope that Ms. Wilcox, our Public Health Nurse, will make it in for her visit with us to talk about active transportation and safety. A June newsletter will be going home on Monday. As well, the “Wonderful Ones” will be leading the Morning Announcements (their last time before they are in Grade 2!!). If your child has been asked to say a prayer, please have them practice reading it aloud to you in preparation. We look forward to another short but busy week – Friday, June 5 is a P.D. day!

Mr. Ryan’s Grade 1/2 class

Welcome June! Let’s pray for a beautiful last month to the school year! Homework calendars will be sent homeTuesday. I am still waiting for a few of the students to submit their May homework folders. Last week we had an amazing time at Gatineau Park on our field trip. The children learned a lot about animals, insects, plant life, and habitats. It was a very well organized day and a very big thank you to all of our parent volunteers that were able to accompany. Also, a very big thank you to Ms. Myers for organizing such a fun experience for our students! We did not have our class pic-nic last week and will have it this Wednesday. Again, everything will be provided. They students just need to bring their healthy appetites! In math this week we are learning about fractions. In Language, we are going to be doing word wall activities and working in our language stations. In science, we are learning about living things and plants. A reminder that this Friday is a PD Day and there is no school for students. Hoping everyone has a blessed week!

Ms. Rupnik’s PLC Class

June homework calendars come home on Monday, June 1, 2015. The Google short/long vowel books will be sent home on Monday as well. Please take some time to sit with your child and have him/her read it to you!  I hope you are as proud of their hard work as I am.  We will also continue our work on the play Chicken Little and begin to add gesture/actions to our words.  Have him/her practise with you at home daily.  Invitations will be sent home at the end of the week. We look forward to having you visit with us.

Depave Paradise

3

Depave Paradise is back!

Last year, we removed more than 100 square meters of asphalt from the Kitchissippi Church parking lot.

This year, with the help of the community, we’re going to do the same for St. Anthony Catholic School.

Depave Paradise addresses the proliferation of hard surfaces in modern urban environments through the primal act of ripping up unused pavement and replacing it with soil and vegetation. Volunteers “liberate the soil,” using hand tools to pry up the pavement. Native plants, bushes and trees are then planted to act as filters and sponges for polluted stormwater runoff. The events attract media and political attention, and raise awareness of the issues surrounding the urban water cycle, while making measurable environmental impacts, reducing runoff and contamination and increasing green space.

June 20th is depaving day – food, friends, activities and a handful of pry bars is all we need to have a good time and make Ottawa just that much greener.

If you’d like to get involved please see our volunteer sign-up page.
