Teacher Notes for the Week

Ms Myers grade 1 class

Spring has sprung…and we are so grateful! The “Wonderful Ones” spring writing included phrases such

as “Good-bye snowpants,hello t-shirts!”, “Good-bye snowshoes, hello bikes!”, and another favourite –

“Good-bye hot-chocolate, hello lemonade!” Indeed we are enjoying the change in weather, but please

continue to check the forecast and ensure your child has appropriate footwear and rain gear if needed.

Our schoolyard can be very messy at this time of year! This week we celebrate Earth Day by participating

in our yard clean-up on April 22nd . We will also plant bean seeds in the classroom and look forward to

charting the changes we observe as they grow. A reminder that Friday, April 24 is a PD day.

Mr. Cooks Class grade 1/2

Word wall words this week are: WHO, DOUBT, NIGHT, FAST, and READ. As always, we will do activities using these words and will try to use them in our writing activities. In math this week, we are continuing with 3-D shapes. On Tuesday, we will be making shape skeletons using marshmallows and toothpicks. The children can bring them home to show you! We are hoping to move on to measurement by the end of this week. In science, we will be doing some experiments with liquids ad solids, learning about their properties and what happens when we mix them together. Wednesday is our Spring Clean-Up. I would suggest dressing the students in clothing that can get a little dirty. Our responsibility to this amazing event is to pick up compostable materials in our school yard (ie., leaves, twigs etc…). Rain date is Thursday. Also on Thursday, St. Anthony is holding a fundraiser to help families in need in other countries with buying a goat. Goats can do a lot for these families and we can help! There will be gum for sale and the students will be able to chew bubble gum at school. 50 cents per gum. Lastly, this Friday is a PD Day and there will be no school. Looking forward to another beautiful and blessed week! God Bless!

Ms Rupnik Primary Language Class

This week in the Primary Language Class, we will continue with our narrative writing unit.  We will use wordless picture books as a foundation for creative writing. Oftentimes students struggle with ideas and topics for narrative writing. Wordless picture books offers a visual platform for students, providing them with pictures to assist in developing storylines, setting development, character descriptions, sequencing of events, and much more. During centers, they will be introduced to a new wordless picture book app called Imagistory on our IPADS. This special app allows students to create and record their own stories using wordless picture books. Ask your child about Imagistory and the wordless picture books we used in our class this week.

Teacher Notes for this week:

Ms. Rupnik’s Primary Language Class

Welcome back everyone! This upcoming week, we will revisit ‘recount writing’ in our journals.   Our Social Language activities will focus on knowing how you feel. We will also review the concept of big deal/little deal.  Remember to keep helping your child with the homework calendar. When you support your children’s homework routine, you help them do better at school.

 Ms Myers Grade 1 Class

This week we look forward to our visit from the Scientists in Schools program. Wendy Decker, our scientist, will guide us through five learning centers where the students will explore different aspects of energy in our lives. On Friday, the whole school will participate in Earth Hour – we will work without using any electricity from 10:00-11:00 a.m. During this time we will brainstorm for ways we can conserve energy at home and school. In math we will focus on how we measure time – beginning with

days, weeks, months, years, hours, and minutes. Real life opportunities to connect daily/monthly activities in your home with calendars and clocks help build your child’s sense and concept of time.

The “Wonderful Ones” will be leading the Morning Announcements this week. If your child has been asked to say a prayer, please have them practice reading it aloud to you in preparation.

Dans la classe de Mr. Chartrand:

Grade 1/2

In Social Studies, we are continuing to focus on comparing Canada to other

countries around the world. The Grade 2’s will be presenting their Country Projects.

Grade 1’s are introducing their home and it’s location on a map and also working on

Community Helpers.

2015-03-22_1505

In French, we will finish the “au/eau” this week. The two stories are (“Pauline

Sauterelle” and “Que c’est beau, que c’est beau!”) can be found on their google

accounts.

In reading, we are reading “C’est le printemps – Grade 1’s”. The grade 2’s will focus

on “la vie sur l’étang – the life cycle of a frog” and we will also read “Les graines

poussent”.

2015-03-22_1506

In the classroom, students will be Benchmarked and tested for the word wall words.

We will see the last of the word wall words in April and MayJune will be a review.

We will continue to practice book concepts and comprehension.

The words wall words for this week are:

– trois(three) avoir(to have) être (to be)

dire (to say)

* Please practice the words at home..

Grade 4 (Immersion)

We will finish are two online labs this week and then finish studying the different

uses of rocks in society’s past and present. The summative task will be the final

Thursday prior to the Easter break.

Merci,

Mr Cook’s Class – grade 1/2

The word wall words this week are: OUTSIDE, AGAIN, KNEW, WRITE, HURT
In Math, we will continue to work with money. At home, you can provide your child with several coins and have them make different amounts. The grade 1s are learning to make change to 20 cents, and the grade 2s are learning how to make change to $1.00. The students seem to be enjoying this Math unit! In language, we will be writing our Narratives this week. I encourage the students to talk about their ideas at home and come to school with many ideas! (ie, characters, setting, problems, solutions) Homework folders are due this week. Pizza orders and milk orders are also due by the end of this week. We are still continuing to collect food items for our Lenten Project. The support thus far has been great! Many thanks to all the parents! I hope everyone had a blessed and restful March Break! Welcome back and welcome SPRING!!!

St. Anthony Connects – The Week of December 8 – 12

Our Aviva Gallery – our campaign in pictures and videos

These are just a few of the pictures we have taken over the months of the Aviva Campaign.  We have dedicated countless hours to promoting an idea that will transform our school yard.  Now we are down to the final weekend and we are in 30th place out of 120 semi-finalists.  Only 40 make it on to the next round. I would like to thanks all the parents and students in our community who have supported this bid.  We can still pull this off depending how we do in the next few days.  It has been a great deal of fun and the campaign has certainly opened the eyes of many people to what our kids have as a playground. No matter what happens to our project, we will work on implementing the plan put together by our students.  It is a great plan, especially because it represents the voices and the views of our students.

 Teacher notes for this week

photo Ms Myers Grade 1: We continue to journey through Advent with an emphasis on preparing our hearts for Jesus’ birth. The children are enjoying our class Advent prayer calendar each day. This week, as part of our school Advent outreach, we will be making cards for the patients at St. Vincent Hospital. We are also busy preparing a simple nativity play for our third week of Advent liturgy on Monday, Dec. 15 at 2:00 p.m.

Ms. Rupnik’s class:

We will focus on a book titled “I Promise”. This a fairy tale that tells the story of a bossy princess who makes three promises to a frog in return for retrieving her golden ball.  Our lessons and tasks will include making connections and retelling the story from memory.  We will also discuss the change in the princess’ character.  The Retelling Journal arrives home on Friday. Be sure to sit with your child and listen to him/her retell this fairy-tale.  Then write the retelling in the journal. Have him/her draw a picture in the journal as well.  Return the Retelling Journal to school on Monday, December 15 along with the December homework calendar.

Teacher Notes for the week

Dans la classe de Mr. Chartrand:

Grade 1/2

The students are beginning a unit on winter (l’hiver).

On Monday, I’m sending home a vocabulary page with 2 winter stories to cut out and read. Please try to read the stories with your child.

The grade 1’s are working on creating descriptive sentences while using a model, while the grade 2’s are working on procedural writing (how to make a snowman and steps to wash your hands.)

The grade 2’s will be doing a world community (country of origin) project soon. We are finishing our unit on Rules and Responsibilities.

The words wall words for this week are: ne… pas (negation), garçon, fille.

Grade 4 (Immersion)

The animal habitat projects are due this week. We will be presenting them in December. The unit test is December 4th. Bonne Chance!

I have sent home a test review sheet.

Merci,

Monsieur

M Girard

4/5e Pédagogie de l’enquête: mise en page des résultats de la recherche
5/6e Études Sociales: «la démocratie en action» (le système parlementaire canadien)
4e immersion: choix d’un poème de Noël et réflexes de conversation.

Ms. Rupnik’s class:

This upcoming week, we will continue our work on descriptive writing. We will finish our graphic organizers to describe ourselves.  We will then transfer the specific details and adjectives from the graphic organizers to paragraphs.  We will also welcome a new volunteer to our afternoon class, Ms. Stanyar.  She lives in our community and has very generously volunteered her time to our class for more than 6 years.
Ms Manzoli’s class:

This week we say farewell to Mr. McCulley, we wish him success in his future teaching career. We will be beginning our presentations to the class on our countries. We will also be participating through skype with a grade three class from Edmonton.

Aviva Community Fund: Ideas for our new school yard

Evergreen has produced an impressive series of photographs and charts based on the consultation of Andrew Harvey that took place with all our students last month.

The beauty of this plan is that it has the handprint of each and every student on it. Andrew talked to all of them and he is coming back at the end of the month to make sure he got the plans right.

The Aviva Competition is very important for us – it gives us a national platform to show people what a Canadian inner city playground really looks like.

Andrew’s work gives all of us even more information on how the students feel about their yard.

The amazing thing is the students accept what they have, but they really deserve so much more. Take a look at this collection of material. You can show your support for our kids by becoming a regular voter in the Aviva Campaign. Change can happen and our kids deserve better.
