Teacher Notes for this Week

Kindergarten Blog for December 19-23, 2016
Our last blog post of 2016!  It is hard to believe that we have been in school for 4 months already!
We hope to enjoy our last week together by creating wonderful Christmas crafts, attending a school-wide assembly on Wednesday and our Fourth Advent Liturgy on Thursday.  We are singing “Take a Walk to Christmas” in our classrooms and hope to sing for other classes too!
Our walk to the mailbox to mail our Santa letters was a huge success.  Santa even made a surprise visit the next day to let us know he got all of our letters!  What a great surprise!  We also took advantage of the great snow and the K1 group went snowshoeing!
kpp1
Over the holidays we encourage parents to work on the following skills. Play games for letter and sound recognition, as well as number recognition from 0 to 10 or higher. Count everyday objects to 20 in both English and French. Print their  first name starting with a capital letter followed by lowercase letters. We are pleased to say that all the children are able to recognize their names in print.
We would like to wish all our families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! The Kindergarten team feels truly blessed to be working with such wonderful and inquisitive children.

Grade One-two Ms Myers’ Class

Congratulations to all those Grade One and Two students who volunteered to say our morning prayer on the announcements last week. They did a super job! Our class will have a chance to prepare the prayer for daily announcements in the New Year. If your child has not yet volunteered, please encourage them to “take a risk” and try it out!  Opportunities such as this help build your child’s confidence.  The amazing snowfall this past week gave us a chance to begin our snowshoeing season in the school yard! The children were determined and proved very capable as they “hiked” around our school yard. Hopefully we will have more opportunities to use our school snowshoes to get fresh air and exercise this winter! In the coming week we will wrap up our math studies of data management as the students gather data from their classmates and share their findings by creating simple bar graphs.  The fourth week of Advent is upon us. We will focus on Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem and the birth of Jesus. Our last school liturgy will be held Thursday, December 22nd at 1:00 p.m. Parents are welcome to attend!  Thank you so much for encouraging your child to participate in our Advent outreach project in support of St. Luke’s table. Your generosity is very much appreciated.  As the holidays approach, kindly ensure that your child returns their homework, library book, and home reading books this week. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all families a restful and joyous Christmas. Here’s to 2017 and all the learning and promise it holds for us!

Ms Moga’s Grade Two-Three Class

It’s a little hard to believe that our last week before Christmas break is here! The students have been working hard, learning, and enjoying their friends in Grade 2/3 the past 4 months. If I don’t see you in the school this week, please know I’m wishing you and your families a safe, peaceful, and very Merry Christmas!

Writing- The students wrapped up their animal reports last week. They turned out really great and they should all be proud of their hard work and the final product! This week we’ll focus on descriptive writing using our five-senses. We will be hard at work brainstorming adjectives to describe Christmas related things.

Reading- We are continuing to work on our Visualizing skills. This week, we will read various Christmas-themed stories and practice sharing our visualizations. Students are learning to use the words “I’m picturing”, “I’m imagining”, and using their five senses to describe their visualizations.

Math- This week we will focus on subtraction strategies. We will subtract to find out how much is left (e.g. when spending money), as well as finding the difference (e.g. subtraction as comparing). We will continue with this unit in January.

Science- The students enjoyed learning about position of objects and people. They discovered many new adjectives related to position. This week, we will do an experiment to look at how different objects move.

Religion- Welcome to the fourth week of Advent! Last week we learned about the joy that Jesus brings. This week we will read about and discuss Jesus’ birth in the stable.

Art- We will be making a few ornaments and crafts to take home for Christmas.

Have a great week!

Ms. Moga

Ms Solymar’s Grade Three Class

With only two weeks till Christmas, the grade 3 students were like little elves helping Santa. We worked really hard this week working on graphing, descriptive writing, exploring what movement is, and so much more. The picture shows a sneak peak of a special treat we have been working on for next week.
Next week we will be busy with Christmas activities, but I will also be sad to say goodbye to this wonderful group of students. I have learned so much from them and have been proud to call them my students (even only for a short while). Each one of these beautiful children have impacted who I am as a teacher and I will never forget them.
Coming up this week:
Math – We will be finishing up graphing this week, looking at line graphs, bar graphs, and picture graphs.
Language – Last week, the students each drew a Christmas picture and wrote a descriptive paragraph about it. We will be finishing these up and work on some letter writing!
Religion – This week represents the last week of Advent. We will review all we have learned about during the Advent season by playing a game called “Journey to Bethlehem”.
Reminders for this week:
1. Pizza day on Friday
2. Homework calendar due on Friday
3. Come join us for the last liturgy followed by Christmas activities on Thursday afternoon

A great big thank-you to Ms. Bastien (Tyson’s mom) for being our Guest Reader last week and visiting our class to read us a story.  We really appreciate your time and support. We have another Guest Reader coming on Tuesday for our afternoon class.

Remember to return the December homework calendars signed on Wednesday, December 21, 2016.

This week, we will deliver our special cards and ornaments to our friends of St. Anthony Catholic School. We will also have Christmas Scavenger Hunt in our school and look for different Advent/Christmas items like (poinsettia, stable, stars, etc.).

Please take some time this week to read our December class newsletter. It also has a Christmas Scavenger Hunt you can try at home with your child.

r3

Home Activities for the Holidays: Here are four little activities you can do with your child to ensure he/she is still learning over the holidays:

  1. READ with your child every night.
  1. Have your child WRITE thank-you notes to Santa Claus, grandparents, uncles/aunts, friends, neighbours, etc. for presents received during the holidays.
  1. Take a WALK with your child and look for signs of winter. TALK about what things you see, smell, hear, touch, and taste in the winter!  This will help them prepare for our new theme in January.
  1. PLAY games and have fun! (for example: card games, board games, Simon Says, I Spy, etc.).

On behalf of St. Anthony Catholic School, we wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas.  Classes resume again on Monday, January 9, 2017.

r1Mr. Nixon’s Extended French Class

This week students showed their creative talent in grade 3, 4, 5, and 6!

Grade 3: Many students enjoyed demonstrating their knowledge of the grammatical rules and common phrases introduced to them in class by creating their own comic strips. Students designed and created their own comic characters that engaged in French dialogue. By following a model on the board, students were encouraged to use common phrases they have learned in class or come up with their own following the grammatical rules they have been practicing. Students showed passion for their work and an understanding of how to use French in basic conversation between their characters. Extraordinaire!

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

You can feel the excitement in the air as we begin our last week of Advent and journey towards the blessed day of Christmas, to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ!  We will continue to focus on the beauty of the season and be reminded that we too can be the “Good News” as is evidenced by all the items that our team has brought in to help those in need who visit St. Luke’s Table. Students can continue to bring items in before they will be delivered at the the end of the week.

In Language, the students will continue to research the Christmas customs in other countries and share their findings with their classmates. We will also read Christmas stories that offer reminders of the beauty and true meaning of this special time of the year.

In math, the students will write a survey question based on the Advent season and use their question to survey their classmates.  They will be required to organize their results on a bar graph and record conclusions based on the results of their survey. It will be fun to learn more about the preferences of our teammates.

The grade 4/5 extended students have been working hard while preparing a short Christmas play in drama to present to other classes in the school. We are looking forward to taking our show on the road.

I will be collecting the chromebooks this week to leave at school over the Christmas break. This will allow the students to disconnect and spend more quality time with family and friends.  I hope this will also give the students an opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors and all the snow that comes with living in this great country of Canada!

I want to wish you and your families a blessed holiday season.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

Have a great week!

Grade Five-Six Mrs. Colaiacovo’s Class News

He is coming! We celebrate the final week of advent and look forward to the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Please feel free to join in the final liturgy in the gym on Thursday, December 22 at 1:00.

The grade ⅚ class traveled to St. Luke’s kitchen last Wednesday morning to assist in preparations for their Christmas feast. I was so proud of their strong work ethic and the enthusiasm they put into all the tasks that they were assigned. It was especially moving, I thought, when they broke into spontaneous carol-singing as they worked. Well done boys and girls, you truly are Super Stars!!

Our last week of school for the 2016 calendar year will see the grade ⅚ class finishing our data management unit in math. The students will be performing their Christmas-themed reader’s theatre productions on Tuesday morning to a few very special audience members. Our space science unit will continue, with the (volunteer) assistance of Mr. Bannan.

I wish all of you a blessed Christmas and a safe and happy New Year!

Kindergarten News for December 12-16, 2016

k1

There will be many opportunities to join the Kindergarten Groups this week at St Anthony School to take part in some fun adventures such as a field trip, an Advent liturgy, a neighbourhood walk to the mailbox to mail our Santa letters and Reading Buddies!

k2

What a great week!  There is much excitement as we wait in joyful hope during the Advent season.  We are singing songs, participating in class discussions and sharing our great ideas as we begin to understand The Christmas Story.  Our students are very engaged during our weekly Advent liturgies.  They sing “Stay Awake, Be Ready!”  and “Light the Advent Candle”.  They know it is a special time when we listen to the gospel and the prayers.  Please join us this week on Thursday December 15th, 2016 at 9:15 for our Third Week of Advent Liturgy in the gym.

k3
The Kinders attended our second Advent liturgy with the whole school on Thursday. This time some of the kinders got to participate by standing beside their older brother or sister as they read a prayer. Another student got to light the Advent candles.

k4

Monday we will visit Starr Gymnastics for the last time.  Our students absolutely loved this experience and we were so lucky to go three times!  A special thank you to all of our parent volunteers!  The bus will leave at 8:40-8:45 am.  Please hop on the bus with us if you can! We will return by 10:20 am.

Tuesday we will get our jingle bells and musical instruments out as we march through the neighbourhood singing Christmas songs along the way.  We will stop at the mailbox on Rochester Street to put our letters in the mail to Santa.  We can’t wait to hear back from Santa this year!  Please join us if you can on Tuesday at 10:00am for our Santa letter walk!

k5

Wednesday K1 has Reading Buddies with the Grade 4/5 class at 10:30 am.  We are reading lots of Christmas stories.  K2 visits the Learning Commons on Wednesday morning too!

On Friday we will say goodbye to Ms. Jasmine (ECE from Algonquin) and Ms. Henry (student teacher from Ottawa U). Our Kindergarten students were blessed to have such wonderful educators in training and as staff we were so fortunate to have these educators be a part of our Kindergarten Team.  We wish them continued success in their educational journey.  Ms Henry will be back in February 2017!

Thank you Ms. Jasmine and Ms. Henry!

Ms Myers’ grade one-two class

This week the children completed some amazing artwork in the style of Piet Mondrian, one of the founders of modern art. They used primary colours and simple lines to create versions of Mondrian’s “Composition in Red, Blue, and Yellow.” Come by our “gallery” in the hallway and take a look!

Week three of Advent is already upon us.  We have been focusing on a different part of the Christmas story each week.  The children continue to enjoy adding a piece to our Advent calendar each day and are experiencing the joy of giving each time they deliver a card to someone in our school community.  In the coming week we will read the story of the Legend of the Poinsettia. It is a Mexican folktale that emphasizes the importance of giving from the heart. Remember to ask your child about it!  In math we will continue to focus on collecting data. The children will have opportunities to generate questions for their classmates and practice using a tally mark system to organize the data they collect.  In reading we are working on a decoding strategy called “Guess the Covered Word.” It encourages students to cross check initial letter sounds with what makes sense when they get “stuck” on a word. Ask your child to tell you about our “Guess the Covered Word” activity. This week our class will be leading the Morning Announcements. If your child has been asked to say a prayer, please have them practice reading it aloud to you in preparation. Mrs. Mullins, our home reading volunteer, will return to the class this Wednesday. Please ensure your child returns their Home Reading book this week. It sounds like very cold weather is headed our way this week…please ensure your child comes to school warmly dressed and prepared for the brisk air!

myers

Ms Moga’s Grade two-three class

Writing- The students are almost finished their descriptive reports on animals! Once, finished, the students will have a chance to present their reports to our class to share their learning.

moga

Reading- We began discussing visualizing last week! Many of the students realized they already use this strategy when reading. We will continue to read texts and practice describing the visualizations in our heads.

Math- We began our unit on addition and subtraction. This week we will investigate various strategies for adding (e.g. use doubles facts to find larger sums, bridge to 10 to solve addition problems).

Science- The grade 2s started the new unit on Movement. We brainstormed ways that many objects can move. We discovered that objects and people need a force (push or pull) in order to move. Next week, we will continue to discuss movement, as well as position.

Have a great week!
Ms. Moga

Mrs. Rupnik’s Primary Language Class

We have been talking about how preparing for Christmas is much more than buying and receiving gifts. It’s thinking about how we can be more like Christ and then doing something about it.  To help prepare for this festive season, the children have worked on various Advent activities from participating in Advent liturgies, learning songs like Away in the Manger and donating toiletries for St. Luke’s Table.

rupnik-1

This week, we will write letters and cards to special friends of St. Anthony Catholic School (for example: Father Felix, our van drivers, etc.). We will also complete a sequencing activity about the Nativity story. Then we will retell the story using our own words.

We have completed the descriptive writing assignment called “The Best Part of Me”. Have a look at some samples. They are so creative!

rupnik-2

Please return the Retelling Journal to school on Monday, December 12, 2016.

grade-3

December is flying by! The grade 3 students had another busy week working and preparing for the birth of our Saviour. Elfie has been very mischievous, hiding all over our classroom, but she helps us to remember to be kind to each other especially during the season of Advent. I am also very proud of the work that the grade 3’s have done in their French class with Mr. Girard. Their play was unbelievable and I know they worked really hard on it.
Coming up this week:
Math – This week we will be looking at the different types of graphs and how we can use them to demonstrate information.
Language – We will be exploring how there are “pebble” words and “rock” words and how we can use them to describe Christmas events!
Religion – This week marks the third week of Advent so we will continue on our exploration of the Advent season.
Reminders for the week:
1. Popcorn day on Thursday
2. Third Advent Liturgy on Thursday at 9 am

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

The third week of Advent is upon us with all its joy and anticipation.  The students have been summarizing an article on the significance of this important time of the year and all the symbols that go with this liturgical season where we wait to celebrate the birth of Jesus.  Ask your child all the interesting information we have discovered through our readings.

t1

The students will visit Starr Gymnastics once again on Monday morning.  They are to be reminded to dress comfortably to be able to participate in all the fun physical activities they will be engaged in.

In Language, the students are enjoying our Book Study “Hana’s Suitcase”.  Ask your child about the events that unfolded in Hana’s life during World War II.  The students will also be writing an explanatory story about how people celebrate Christmas in another country.  It will be interesting to learn about how the customs differ from how people celebrate this holiday in Canada.

In math, we will begin our next strand, Data Management.  Students will learn various ways to collect and organize data.  They will make pictographs and bar graphs.  The goals for your child are to learn to gather and organize information appropriately; to read and interpret tables, charts, and graphs correctly; and to understand and be able to explain how people use data.

Our next science unit is Rocks and Minerals.  The students will learn about the different types of rocks and minerals and how they are important to our Earth.

The homework duotang will be sent home on  Monday and must be returned on Friday completed with care and attention to detail.

The students continue to bring in items in support of St. Luke’s table. Thank you!!!  The Grade 4/5 team certainly is an example of “Good News”!

Have a great week!

Mrs. Colaiacovo’s Grade five-six class

Whoa! We are keeping a frantic pace, but enjoying every minute of learning and fun in grade 5/6!

col

The students presented their December book talks this week and I enjoyed their creativity and their insights. I am building a reading list for my Christmas holidays, based on their recommendations! We were lucky to have Mr. Moleski (a Board technology expert) visit the class on Wednesday morning to work with the students on a mini research project for  Advent on their ChromeBooks.

We began the data management strand in math and students have been revisiting the concepts of mean, median, mode and range; constructing bar graphs and pictographs; and collecting and interpreting data. Next week we will continue to examine and graph data as it relates directly to us here at Saint Anthony.

The grade 6 students have been working hard on the Earth and Space strand of science. Ask your child to tell you their mnemonic device they are using to remember the order of the planets in our galaxy! The students will have a mid-unit quiz on Tuesday to check in on what they have learned thus far.

We have also been working on the special grade 6 rendition of a popular Christmas song and invite parents to attend our big premiere at the monthly school assembly on Wednesday, December 21.

We enjoyed the second Advent celebration as we gathered as a school community this past Thursday and I hope that parents will join us next Thursday, December 15 at 9:15 a.m for our next liturgy.

On Monday during second block we will be attending our second and final Starr Gymnastics session with the grade 4/5 class. On Wednesday morning, we will be walking to St. Luke’s Table to assist in preparations for their Christmas meal. Please continue to support this community organization by sending in personal care items. Help us fill our Advent train!

Please continue to check in with your child to ensure that he/she is staying up to date with work assignments.

Green Club News November and December 2016

green

The Green Club continues to do work around the school to promote a green way of life. We are working on energy conservation and minimizing waste. Students continue to lead monthly assemblies for   Wastefree Wednesdays. We also welcomed Roberta LeBlanc, an Ontario Dairy Educator, to St. Anthony Catholic School. All the students learned how we get our milk and milk products from the ‘farm to the table’. They even made and tasted their own butter. Late November, our post-Halloween Pumpkin bird feeders attracted some birds for us. Thanks Ms. Myers for capturing these birds on your camera! We also had our first Waste Audit for the school year. Students worked with Green Club staff members to gather garbage, recycling, and compost materials for a 24 period. We then weighed the clear plastic garbage bags and filled in the worksheets for our Ontario EcoSchools application. Finally the students assessed the data and communicated results to the whole school community during an assembly. They even created a Google Slide presentation with reminders and reduction strategies. Keep on going!

hatch-2

Hatch prepares students (ages 7- 17) for the 21st century by teaching how to write computer code using JavaScript in a fun and engaging way. Hatch has built a proprietary educational platform that is designed around the principles of self-paced and mastery-based learning to encourage children to challenge themselves and build their own digital portfolio from their library of 600  projects including Minecraft, Star Wars, Games, Art, Design Apps and much more!

Hatch after school and lunch time programs are 8 to 12 weeks in length, and your preference of start dates & times are available for the winter of 2017. After school programs cost $21 per hour per student, and lunchtime programs are pro-rated at $16 for a 45-minute session.

In order for students to obtain as much hands-on coaching as possible, we strive to provide 1 instructor for each 6 students. As such, we can run a program for as few as 6 students, although most schools have over 15 students participate. Our programs are HST exempt due to a positive ruling from the government who believes in the educational value of Hatch programs.

Registration for January classes starts soon – we will be running a lunch-time program.  Subsidies are available

Kindergarten News for December 5-9, 2016

We are very excited to plan many great events for our Kinders. They are embracing all of our initiatives and as educators we are delighted to see how all of our efforts are so very much appreciated. A special thank you to our parent community for supporting us too!!

The Kinders were so reflective and attentive during the school’s first magical Advent celebration on Thursday. We look forward to attending the second celebration next Thursday

Thank you to all the parents who have sent in their donations of toiletries for St. Luke’s Table. Whatever small donation you can make is much appreciated.

On Friday they all had fun on their walk in the neighbourhood and they loved discovering where their stuffed animals were hibernating in the school yard. Of course, the delicious hot chocolate with marshmallows was enjoyed by all after coming in from the cold. Thank you for sending in a little stuffed animal to hibernate. Thank you to Ms. Ekich for joining us on our hibernation walk!

On Monday morning both classes will be going to Starr Gymnastics. Please make sure your child wears comfortable clothing.

Ms Myers’ Grade One-Two Class

It’s been a busy start to our Advent season in Grade 1/2! We have a special “Advent Calendar” in our class. Each day we are remembering people in our community during our morning prayer. If your name appears on our Advent calendar, expect to receive a special card to let you know that we have kept you in our prayers! We also participated in our first school-wide Advent liturgy. Our readers did a great job preparing for this celebration. During our second week of Advent together we will explore the story of the Annunciation. Thank you for all the donations we have received in support of St. Luke’s Table. Your generosity is most appreciated.

In math we will begin our unit on data management. We will focus on  collecting data (information) and sharing the information using graphs. A new December homework calendar and newsletter was sent home last week. A reminder that copies of these items can be found on our school website.  Have a great week!

Ms Moga’s Grade Two-Three Class

Homework Update: the students received their December homework calendars. Monday’s and Wednesday’s homework involves our weekly Word Wall Words; the students will be given time each Monday to copy them into their agendas. The weekend homework asks your child to do Raz Kids and Mathletics. Passwords were sent home again on Friday in case they were misplaced. I recommend 15 minutes of each program on both Saturday and Sunday. If you do not have access to technology, continuing to read each day is just fine.

Writing- The students have been working hard on researching their animals. They are ready to take their information from their graphic organizers and write their good copies.

Reading- Our next reading strategy is Visualization. This is when the reader creates a picture in his/her mind as they read. This helps the reader have a better understanding of the story. We will read some great fiction texts to help us learn about and practice this strategy.

Math- We will wrap up our unit on Data Management (graphing), and begin Addition and Subtraction. At this time of year, our focus is on addition and subtraction with 1-digit numbers, using various strategies (e.g. mental math, doubles, and fact families).

Science- We will begin our next science unit on Movement! This week we will describe positions of objects and different ways objects move (e.g.  turning, spinning, swinging, bouncing).

Religion- We are continuing our Advent journey. The students are enjoying our Advent calendar that reveals a little bit of the Christmas story each day!

Gym- We are working on throwing and catching. The students have practiced different ways to throw (overhand and underhand), as well as proper catching techniques. They have enjoyed playing games such as Dodgeball and “Sink the Ship” to reinforce these skills.

Have a great week!

A great big thank-you to Emy Nguyen (a junior student) and Ms. Lindsey Barr (author  of “Plant a Garden of Kindness”) for being our Guest Readers last week. Have a look at our pictures!

This upcoming week, we will work on vocabulary related to Advent and Christmas in oral and written form. We will focus on a book titled “There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Bell”. This book tells the story of a lady who swallows different Christmas items. Our lessons and tasks will include sequencing and retelling the story from memory. The Retelling Journal arrives home on Friday for homework. Be sure to sit with your child and listen to him/her retell this story. Then write the story in your child’s own words. Return the Retelling Journal to school on Monday, December 12, 2016.

We will also continue our work on descriptive writing. This week we will create graphic organizers to describe ourselves.  We will then transfer the specific details from the graphic organizers to paragraphs and create a new class bulletin board titled “The Best Part of Me”.

Our school yard has a new gazebo area.  The children have enjoyed the new structure, and it will definitely help them cool down during the summer program.  Also, a new play structure will be set up in the yard soon.  I think we will have a blast in our new school yard all year round.

We made finger print poppies and a poppy wreath to commemorate Remembrance Day. We also spent time with a guest speaker who works for the Canadian Armed Forces.  The children learned a lot about Canada’s role in peacekeeping.

Homemade Slime

One of the children’s favourite activities during EDP time is slime.  It is easy and simple to make at home.  You need:

·      1 tbsp of Metamucil with Psyllium (generic fiber supplement will also work as long as it contains psyllium)

  • 1 cup of water
  • Food coloring

 Instructions

  • In a large microwaveable bowl combine 1 tablespoon of Metamucil or similar with 1 cup of water and stir well.  You can also add a few drops of food coloring for rich coloring.
  • Stir the ingredients until everything is dissolved.
  • Then place the bowl in the microwave and heat on high until you start to see bubbles (roughly 2 minutes).  Continue to microwave the bubbling slime for one minute.  Then stop the microwave and stir.
  • Once stirred microwave again for two more minutes.
  •  Remove the bowl from the microwave and allow it to cool.  At this point the slime will still be liquid, but it will thicken as it cools.  Once it is completely cool it will be ready for play!
  • Be sure to check that the center of the slime is cool before giving it to kids.

Christmas Break (January 3 – January 6)

If there is enough interest, EDP will be open January 3 – 6, from 7 am to 6 pm.  Should the program run these days, the activities plan will be posted on the EDP parent bulletin board.                                                                                                                                                     (NOTE:  The last day of online registration for Christmas Break is December 9th)

New staff member

We have a new staff member for school aged children (Gr 2-Gr 6) in the afternoon.  Heather Mullan will be in Room 27 as of December 5th.

Reminders

We spend a lot of time outside after school.  Please ensure that your children are dressed appropriately for the weather.

This week was the first week of Advent. The grade 3 students worked hard to show love and respect to each other in preparation for the birth of Jesus. We also made an advent wreath together using cut outs of our hands to symbolize our community in the classroom.
We were lucky this week to get to go to Star Gymnastics on Monday. The students had so much fun and got some great exercise. We are all looking forward to getting to go back tomorrow morning!
The grade 3 students had two visitors in our class this week. The first is a small elf (named Elfie) who will stay with us until Christmas to make sure that we are all behaving. She is a very silly elf and does different things everyday. Make sure to ask your child what she got up to each day!
Our second visitor was Constable Callaghan from the Ottawa Police Service. The students got to talk and ask questions about what it is like to be a police officer. They also discussed safety at home, school, and at the park and talked about emergencies and what to do in situations.
Coming up this week:
Math – We will start looking at surveys and collecting primary data. This includes asking the right questions and how we can demonstrate this data.
Science – It is time to start looking at what forces can do and the different forces that can pull or push.
Language – We will continue on with our descriptive writing of food and move towards describing other objects.
Religion – This week we will celebrate the second week of Advent, so we will discuss how we can prepare for the coming of Christ. We will also attend the Advent mass on Thursday and put the flame on our second candle.
Art – Check out our winter art outside of our classroom!
Reminders for the week:
1. Star Gymnastics tomorrow (wear comfortable clothing!)
2. Spelling Check-In on Friday

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

The first full week of December brings with it lots of anticipation, excitement and joy as we journey closer to Christmas!  The students need to be reminded that as we prepare to celebrate Jesus’s Birthday we must continue to remain focussed and diligent in the effort we bring to all our schoolwork.

The students enjoyed our first visit to Starr Gymnastics where they were put through a variety of centres. They had to use different body parts and coordination which got their hearts pumping and lungs working hard, however it brought lots of smiles to the students’ faces.

In math, the students completed a variety of patterning inquiries where they were asked to organize their information on a t-chart.  We continue to focus on ways to organize our thinking and demonstrate our understanding through pictures, numbers and words. Students will have the opportunity to share their understanding of patterning with a unit test later in the week. Students should always be looking for patterns in their environment to see the relationship between what we learn in class and how it is used in the world around them.

In language, the students presented their second Book Talk.  It was great to see how excited the students were to present their book to their peers.  The students spoke clearly and demonstrated greater confidence sharing the information they had practiced. The variety of books that were read was also encouraging.  Well done!

The students were also given a reading comprehension where they were asked to demonstrate their understanding of a story they had read.  Many struggle with summarizing the story.  This is a skill we have been working on with the help of Mr. Moleski.  The students have been introduced to new tools available on the read and write app on their chromebooks that can help with summarizing.  Ask your child to show you their summary about the interesting frog we read about.

Thank you to all the families that have already sent in items for our Advent project in support of St. Luke’s table. It is all “Good News”!

Have a great week!

Ms Colaiacovo’s Grade five-six class

Yet another busy week lies ahead and we look forward to moving ahead with our learning and activities. The grade ⅚ class must be, without a doubt, the fittest class in the school!  Last Monday morning we went with Mrs Troccoli’s ⅘ class to Starr Gymnastics and the students bounced, rolled and swung their way through an hour of challenging courses in the gym.

c1

On Wednesday the grade 6 students participated in their final session and “graduation” at the Y Kids Academy program. The students have benefited from both the healthy eating instruction and the physical activity components of this special program. Once again, we were complemented by YMCA patrons on how respectful and enthusiastic the children are. The students should feel proud that they represented St Anthony School in this way, I sure am!! The students will continue to reap the benefits as they were awarded a one-year membership to use the facilities at the YM/YWCA and will hopefully be inspired to adopt a healthy lifestyle mentality for life.

c2

We were moved by the beautiful music, prayers and symbolism as we celebrated the first week of Advent with the rest of the school community last Thursday. I encourage you to join us, if you can, for the next liturgy on Thursday, December 9 at 1:00 in the gym.

We look forward, in the coming week, to enjoying the December book talk presentations by the grade ⅚ students. Hopefully, your child has practiced for you and asked for feedback from you. We begin data management in math with “real-life” surveys and data collection. Our grade 6 afternoon group continues to explore space….okay, not literally, but from the classroom! We are putting the finishing touches on the Christmas drama presentation and will continue rehearsing this week.

As always, please support your child’s learning by encouraging good work habits by getting homework done promptly, by keeping appropriate bedtime routines, and by arriving to school on time.
