Teacher Notes for the Week

FDK News for February 29-March 4

What a great week in FDK!  Thank you for sending in extra socks and mitts for the wet weather.  Thank you for sending in cans of vegetables and fruit for our Lenten Outreach for the Shepherds of Good Hope.  We will continue to collect cans throughout Lent!
We are figuring out many ways to graph our ideas in Math.  We are watching how our “Caught You Caring” graph is growing everyday.  We have graphed our favorite foods, shapes, our favorite colour, the letters of our names and our birthdays.  Our FDK students are able to interpret the results of the graphs and to find out what is the most popular, what has the most, etc..  Keep up the great work FDK!

On Tuesday, we will have Earth Rangers visit St Anthony this week.  We will also have Rosary on Wednesday.  Thank you for returning the third page of the report card along with the envelope.
Thank you for your continued support,
 The FDK Team

Ms. Myers Grade One Class notes

Congratulations to all students who prepared for morning announcements last week. Super job!  The “Wonderful Ones will have more opportunities to volunteer for this job in the coming months. As a final “100 Day” challenge the students worked with a partner to see what they could build using 100 pieces of lego! Come by our hallway and read the descriptions they wrote about their creations!  They showed a lot of imagination and cooperation! In math this week we will continue our unit in geometry. On Monday I will send home your child’s user name and password for the Mathletics program. The children have had a chance to use this program on the Chromebooks at school to reinforce various math concepts. You may wish to access this resource at home. The site is www.mathletics.ca .  In religion we will build on the story of the Good Shepherd, thinking of the times when we are like the “lost sheep” in need of forgiveness. Thank you for all the generous donations we have received for our school Lenten project!  We will continue to collect donations in the coming weeks. Look for a March newsletter and calendar in your child’s agenda on Tuesday!  Have a great week….surely spring is around the corner!

grade 1

Ms. Moga’s Grade Two Notes

It’s hard to believe that February is over and we’re already moving into March! The beginning of a new month means we are beginning new units in some subjects.

In Science, the students began their “lab report” which included a list of materials, a short paragraph explaining how their playground equipment works, and a diagram. If they have not already brought in their equipment, please have your child bring it no later than Tuesday. This week, they will finish up their lab reports and do a short presentation about their playground equipment.

In Art, the students made “Symmetry Robots” using grid paper. We also did a music lesson focusing on timbre. The students learned and discussed that timbre is the unique sound that instruments make. Everyone was quite good at identifying each of the instruments they heard in a few audio clips. Next week, we will continue with music, discussing the different types of timbre.

In Language, the students worked really hard to complete their explanatory paragraphs. Great questions such as: “How Snakes Catch Food”, How Sharks Breathe”, and “Why Tornadoes Spin” were answered! This week we are continuing our focus on nonfiction, but will be looking at sequencing in different texts. This will lead into procedural writing (e.g. recipes, how-to books).

During our Language block, the students have also been taking turns inputting their journal entries on Kidblog. This is a great website that is simple to use and allows the students to share their writing with a wider audience. I will be sending home a note (sometime in the next week or two) on how you can access the site to read your child’s entries.

In Math, it seems the students have conquered telling time using “quarter past” (or quarter after), and “quarter to”. This week, we will continue to practice these concepts, as well as review “o’clock”, and “half past” to ensure deep understanding.

Please send in any canned fruits or vegetables to contribute to our school-wide Lenten Project. These will be donated to the Shepherds of Good Hope!

Have a great week!

grade 2

Mrs. Manzoli’s Class

Our last week of February ended with a great day on the slopes for our grade four students who went skiing on Wednesday, they had a day of practice has they completed their stations.  We look forward to next year.  We also had an opportunity to explore the Read and Write program that the students have access to in their google drive.  This program allows students to create, refine and develop documents with ease.

This week, will March come in like a lion or lamb?  We continue looking at Narrative writing in language and use our Go-Maps to begin writing our own stories using our google drive.  We will also be having our word quiz on Friday.  In Math, we continue looking at 2-D shapes and will be investigating angles and lines in various quadrilaterals and triangles.  In Science, the grade 3’s looked at how friction can be increased and decreased, this week we will wrap up our unit with a quiz on “Forces and Movement.”

We continue with our Lenten Journey, please continue to bring in canned items for our Shepherds of Good Hope.  Students continue to receive “I Care” coupons to demonstrate how we can be a caring and kind person to others.

Mrs.Rupnik’s Class
This week in the Primary Language Class, we are focusing on following 1, 2, and 3 step directions involving ‘before/after’. We are doing this orally, so part of the exercise involves memory work and the other part involves understanding the difference between the concepts ‘before/after’.  To practise this at home with your child, you can start with a one step direction and then work up to three steps.

Here are some examples:

1. Give me a ‘high five’. (one step)
2. Before you walk around the table, say “I love you, mom ”. (two steps)
3. After you wash your hands, get the dishes, and set them on the table for dinner. (three steps)

March homework calendars arrive home on Monday, February 29, 2016. Please help your child make a plan to work around outside commitments (for example: sports, clubs, etc.).  The activities on the monthly homework calendars are short and require about 5-10 minutes to complete.  In addition to the homework calendar activities, please read to and with your child every night.

Feb. 29 – March 4

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

March is upon us – after we take advantage of our extra February day thanks to it being a Leap Year!

The junior students enjoyed a fabulous day of skiing at Mount Pakenham. The snow was falling the temperature was perfect and by the afternoon we had the mountain to ourselves! The staff at Mount Pakenham remarked on how well behaved and polite the students from St. Anthony were. It was so much fun watching the students embracing one of the joys of our Canadian winters. We are very proud of the positive, never give up attitude our students demonstrated. Beautiful!

Many of the students had the opportunity to present their storytelling.  It was evident that the students spent much time preparing for their presentation.  They were clear, fluent and very entertaining.  We look forward to listening to the last of the stories this week. Well done!!

Last week I assigned math homework from Dreambox, a program the students can access from their Chromebook.  Some students did a wonderful job spending time completing the activities on multiplication and division to complement the concepts we are learning in class.  However, many students did not access the program.  The students should be using their Chromebooks as a learning tool.  Please ensure that your child is using this wonderful resource to help them complete activities assigned by the teacher or to practice what they are learning.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding the expectations of the Chromebook please do not hesitate to contact me at the school.

We continue our Lenten Journey and encourage you to send in donations of cans of fruit or vegetables to help with our Lenten project in support of The Shepherds of Good Hope.

Thank you to those that have already contributed to this wonderful cause.

Have a wonderful week!

Ms. Colaiacovo’s Grade 5/6 notes
What a great week of learning and activity we have had! The junior ski trip was a resounding success for both the students and the teachers. We lucked out with the wonderful fresh snowfall which made for soft landings for those of us who might not have always been vertical on our skis! We capped the week off with a group photo to acknowledge our 2nd place finish in the Board-wide Mathletics Challenge. With only two weeks left until March Break, the students in the grade 5/6 class are incredibly busy with all kinds of exciting and fun learning opportunities.
On Monday morning, we welcome Chris Nihmey to speak with the junior students regarding mental health. On Tuesday the students of St. Anthony will be hosting a presentation byThe Earth Rangers. Earth Rangers is the Kids’ Conservation Organization which visits over 500 schools a year with their Earth Rangers Assembly to educate students about the environment and species at risk. The presentation takes students on an educational adventure to learn about some of the planet’s most amazing creatures and their habitats. This presentation compliments the current area of study for the grade 6 students who are wrapping up the Biodiversity strand in science. On Thursday, the grade 6 students will be attending a mock timetable session at Notre Dame high School i9n anticipation of their transition to grade 7 next year and the grade 5 students will be spending time with Mrs. Troccoli’s grade 4/5 class.
In keeping with our school’s green initiatives and in an effort to reduce the amount of paper and photocopies used, the students will be doing more of their homework assignments on their laptops and Chromebooks. This method was tested this past week for homework assignments and proved to be quite successful. Please continue to check in with your child on a daily basis to confirm that he/she is using the provided technology for its intended purpose and in a responsible and respectful manner. Thanks for your continued support!

Teacher Notes for this week

 FDK News for February 22-26

We hope you enjoyed reading and reviewing the first report card with your child.  We are very proud of our FDK students and we will continue to do our best in all that we do!  Congratulations to our FDK students on all their great accomplishments this term!  Please feel free to contact the FDK team if you would like an interview at anytime!  Our door is always open to you and we would love to have parents visit at anytime!

We had a great week of weather!  We took advantage of the fresh fallen snow on Tuesday and used the school set of snowshoes to enjoy the 50 cm of snow!  Everyone was very happy to get outside and marvel in the winter wonderland!
We are continuing our theme of “I Care”.  It is amazing to see how quickly students are catching on and trying to find nice ways to show their kindness!  We are expressing and accepting positive messages.  They love watching our “Caught You Caring” graph grow as each child has many tickets on the graph already!  Keep up the great work!  We will continue to make graphs using concrete materials, such as stickers and our names on post-it notes, to show the answers to many questions.
We will begin to explore how things move and explain some causes and effects, we are always busy building different ramps, structures and tracks for our cars and marbles.
Ask your child to tell you about the great stories we are reading.  They enjoyed “Red is Best”.  We are continuing to use writing in play activities, such as making lists of names and painting words on paper!  I hope you are enjoying all the great works of art being sent home!  We have many artists in the group and the paint centre is always a busy place!  We could use some painting smocks, if you have any old men’s shirts they make perfect painting smocks!!
Thank you for your continued support,
The FDK Team!

Ms. Myers Grade One Class:

Last week’s snow gave us a chance to get out snowshoeing!  It wasn’t exactly the Mill of Kintail, but there was plenty of snow to enjoy right in our own yard!  The grade ones proved themselves very capable, indeed! As we continue our Lenten journey, we will be exploring the bible story of the Good Shepherd. This story highlights the theme of forgiveness and God’s unconditional love for us. The children came up with some great ideas of how we can follow in the footsteps of Jesus. We decorated a box for the canned goods being collected in support of the Shepherds of Good Hope.  Donations of canned vegetables and fruit, in particular, are most welcome. In math we will begin our unit in geometry as we explore 3-dimensional shapes. The “Wonderful Ones” will be leading the Morning Announcements this week. If your child has been asked to say a prayer, please have them practice reading it aloud to you in preparation. Thank you for remembering to return your child’s report card envelope to be used again in June!

Grade 1 Myers 2

Ms. Moga’s Grade two class:

What a busy week we had in Grade 2! After the big snowfall, the students enjoyed getting out and using the snowshoes in our yard. We tested and tried using each of the six simple machines to help understand how they make work easier. We read the story of Jesus in the wilderness and discussed temptation, and keeping our Lenten Promises. Every student received his/her report card on Thursday. Please sign and return the envelope so it can be reused at the end of the year.

In Math, we have moved onto Measurement. In Grade 2, students are required to tell time to the quarter hour (e.g. 5:15, or 6:45). This week, we will review time to the hour and half hour on digital and analog clocks, as well as begin discussing time to the quarter hour. The students will practice telling and writing different times at each of our math centres. In Language, the students are continuing their explanatory paragraphs. Most of the students are finishing their first draft, and will be ready to proofread and edit this week. Our reading strategy focus continues to be determining importance in nonfiction. This strategy will help students locate specific information when they are answering their questions for their explanatory writing. In Science, we will be discussing mechanisms- machines that combine more than one simple machine (e.g. wheelbarrow, can opener). Students should have their ideas for their homemade mechanism ready by Thursday. We continue our Lenten journey this week. We will read about the First Passover, as well as the miracle of Jesus Feeding the Five Thousand. In Art, we will shift our focus back to music this week. We will be discussing timbre.

Have a great week!

grade 2 Moga

Mrs.Rupnik’s Class

Our school week last week was extra short because of the Family Day long weekend and record-breaking snowfall.  This week, we will catch up with our work, specifically the work on reading comprehension.  Students will begin to work on identifying the important part of stories we read.  We will also read ‘There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Rose’ and complete a sequencing activity.  The Retelling Journal arrives home on Friday. Be sure to sit with your child and listen to him/her retell this story.  Then write the retelling in his/her own words. Return the Retelling Journal to school on Monday, February 29, 2016.  To end the week, we have a special visit from Lindsey Barr, owner of World-Changing Kids (WCK) and author of the book, ‘Plant a Garden of Kindness, A Child’s Guide to Filling a Year with Weekly Acts of Kindness, planned. With Ms. Barr’s help, the students will complete an act of kindness with some FDK students and the toddlers of Dalhousie Daycare.

Mrs. Manzoli’s 3 / 4 class….

We had a few accomplishments last week, starting with our record amount of snowfall to our pizza party on Thursday.  We also managed to complete all our Digital Citizen presentations.  Great job done by all!  The students also received their first term report cards, I hope you took some time with your child to review their progress with them so that they have a focus for second term.  Interviews will only be scheduled on a needs basis.

As we look forward to second term the Grade three’s will be focusing on EQAO preparations.  Ministry testing begins on the last week of May and students will be tested on their Mathematic and Language skills.  Please take some time to visit the web site for further information.  www.eqao.ca.

This week we begin looking at narrative writing by looking at some important elements of a story.  In reading we will focus on the main idea of a story and how to retell a story.

In math we will begin looking at 2-D shapes in geometry.

Reminders:

  • Library book
  • Homework Due on Wednesday
  • Grade 4 ski trip on Wednesday
  • Pizza Day on Friday

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

The last full week of February is already upon us! The blast of winter we got last week was a blessing for our ski trip scheduled for this Wednesday. The students will be able to enjoy wonderful ski conditions at Mount Pakenham.  Please ensure your child comes to school ready to spend the day outdoors.  Layers is a good idea with a good healthy lunch and plenty of water to drink.

The report cards were sent home last week with your child.  We hope you had some time to review the report card with your child.  There was lots to celebrate with recommendations for areas that could be improved upon. Term 2 is well underway with lots of learning ahead. Students need to remain focussed and to continue to put forth their best efforts.

Homework duotangs were sent home on Friday. In it you will find the outline and rubric for the storytelling project. The students have chosen a children’s book and should be practicing for their presentation which will begin on Thursday.  We look forward to being entertained by our peers.

Also, as part of their homework the students will be required to use their Chromebooks, to work on the web-based math program, Dreambox. They will focus on the numeration activities to help practice the multiplication and division concepts we are working on in class. They are required to spend at least 45 minutes on it over the course of the week.  On Friday I will be checking, through the teacher applications on the website, to see if they are completing the tasks in the unit.

We continue our Lenten journey by trying to be more like Jesus.  The students made posters to promote our school-wide Lenten project.  We are collecting canned fruits and vegetables for the Shepherds of Good Hope.  We are encouraging the students to bring in canned foods during this Lenten season.

Have a wonderful week!

FDK News for February 16-19, 2016

What a busy week in Kindergarten!  We had a Parade around the school on Monday for Lunar New Year led by two grade six students that wore our dragon costume!  On Tuesday, Mrs. Turner made delicious pancakes with maple syrup for the whole group.  On Wednesday, we participated in a beautiful Ash Wednesday Liturgy.  On Thursday we prepared for Valentine’s Day and decorated the Learning Commons for the dance.  On Friday, we celebrated with a fun dance with a light show and gave out our Valentine’s card!  We also won the trophy for the “I Care” campaign at our school!  Our FDK students are continually getting caught caring for one another by using kind words and doing random acts of kindness!  Way to go FDK!
This will be a short 4 day week.  We will have a Starr Gymnastics session on Tuesday.  Your child’s first report card will be sent home on Thursday.  The Junior Kindergarten students receive comments this term.  The Senior Kindergarten students will have a mark with their comment in the different subject areas.  We will indicate with the report card if an interview is requested at this time.  Please feel free to contact us if you would like to schedule a phone interview or an interview at the school.  We would be happy to meet with you at your convenience.
We hope you enjoyed the Family Day long weekend despite the cold temperatures!

Ms Myers’ Class:

The grade ones enjoyed a busy week – despite the cancellation of our trip to the Mill of Kintail! We enjoyed making pancakes to celebrate “Pancake Tuesday.”  The children applied their measurement skills as they each made their individual pancake in “production line” fashion and had a good introduction on how to read a recipe. We will continue to focus on how we read and write instructions as we build our knowledge of procedural writing in the coming weeks.Tuesday marks our 100 day of school! We will celebrate with a variety of math and language activities connected to 100. Your child is welcome to bring in a collection of 100 small items (e.g. paper clips, rubber bands etc.) that we can use to practice counting by 1’s, 5’s and 10’s.  In religion we will be talking about how we can follow in the footsteps of Jesus as we journey through the season of Lent.  Our school Lenten project will be in support of The Shepherds of Good Hope. During the six weeks of Lent we will be collecting donations of canned fruits and vegetables.  As it is a short week, there will not be any new word wall words going home. Look for 5 new words the week of Feb. 22nd! Report cards will be going home this Thursday, February 18. Thank you, in advance, for taking the time to review your child’s report. Interviews will be scheduled on a needs basis. Have a great week!

Ms. Moga’s Grade 2 Class:

Happy Valentine’s Day! I hope everyone enjoyed their Family Day. Last week was full of learning and fun in Grade 2. We participated with the whole school in the Ash Wednesday liturgy; the students sang beautifully and received their ashes. We also made Lenten promises. We began handing out “Caught You Caring” tickets- this will continue for the next few weeks. Students are reminded to continue their simple kind and caring acts in the classroom and on the school yard. We of course ended the week exchanging Valentines!

In Religion, we will continue to discuss Lent and learn the story of Jesus’ experience in the wilderness.

In Math, we will be wrapping up 3D Geometry. Students should know the names of the figures, what a face, edge, and vertex are, ass well as how many of these each figure has (e.g. a cube has 6 faces, 8 vertices, and 12 edges). Our next unit will be measurement, specifically measuring time to the quarter hour on digital and analog clocks.

In Language, the students are off to a fantastic start on their explanatory writing. They each chose a “why” or “how” question about an animal and used nonfiction texts to help them find facts to answer (explain) their answers. We will continue this next week, moving onto our drafts, editing, and good copy (including an illustration and diagram).

In Science, we are nearing the end of our unit on Simple Machines. The students will be creating their own mechanism (something that has 2 or more simple machines). Ideally these will be made out of recycled material (e.g. paper towel rolls, boxes). A note will go home if they need to bring anything in to help with this.

Have a great week!

Mrs.Rupnik’s Class

I hope you enjoyed family time this long weekend. Last week was very busy as we continued to focus on procedural writing.  We took the time to introduce Read & Write, a special application for Google Chrome that helps students with writing and reading tasks.  Please ask them about this program.  The Grade Two and Three students wrote a small procedural text about making ice-cream sandwiches and/or how to brush your teeth using Read & Write. This week we will work on another procedural task (how to wash your hands), using Read & Write.  In reading, we will focus on comprehension and begin to work on identifying the important part of stories we read.  Please check out the pictures below. With Mrs. Colaiacovo, Mrs. Manzoli, and Ms. Myers, the students enjoyed learning about the lives of early settlers using artifacts. The kit from the Nepean Museum was filled with special clothing, slate boards, toys, and much more! Lastly, a big thank-you to you, all the parents, for checking and signing your child’s agenda and the All About My Day book daily.

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful long weekend with family and friends.

The grade 4/5 class have begun our Lenten journey.  Each student has made a commitment to recognize this Lenten season by trying to be more like Jesus in their relationship with God, themselves and others.  We pray this journey helps them prepare for the wonderful celebration of Easter.

In Language, we began our sequencing reading strategy with a beautiful book, Water Dance.  While reading they are encouraged to recognize the order of events and to ask themselves, “What comes next?”, to help them understand the text more clearly.

The students should be practicing their Storytelling.  They have all chosen a book to share with the class in an entertaining way. Sequencing will be very important as they practice retelling the story. We will enjoy listening to the stories on February 25th.

In math, we continue to look at strategies when multiplying.  The students shared several strategies during a group inquiry that they will have the opportunity to put into practice this week. Keep practicing those math facts!

Look for your child’s report card to come home on Thursday.  As we begin the second term the students are reminded to continue their hard work.  They must take responsibility for completing any assigned work to the best of their ability.  Only their best will do!!

Thank you for your continued support!

February 28, 2015

Dear Parent,

My name is Chris Nihmey, an author and presenter who spoke to your child several months ago about the important connection between reading and

writing. On February 29th, I am returning to St. Anthony to speak to students about the extremelyimportant topic of mental health: what it is, how it affects us, how we can heal from it, and what stepsare needed, as a society, to fight against the stigma behind mental illness. I am an author of four books. If you are curious to see my publications, please check out my websiteat chrisnihmey.com

After two long years, the wait is over. Just in time for the holiday season, my latest book is finally here! Sally is my first fully-illustrated picture book for youth to adult, adorned

with beautiful imagery, and appropriate for any age. It is the heartwarming story of a teenage boy who befriends a homeless woman who is suffering from illness and isolation. It is a story proving that we can all make a difference, just by opening our hearts. Sally has many important themes such as respect, acceptance, and compassion for all. No matter the age of your child, I highly encourage you to read it first to elicit discussion as they read.

The day of my visit, I will be hosting an official book signing with students in the Learning Commons. I would love for your child to be a part of it. My book sells for a flat rate of $20. I will be

donating 25% of my total book sales profits back to your school for mental health initiatives. If your child is not purchasing a book, they will still be a part of our book signing. Autographs are free

of charge, as are smiles and laughter. Sally is a story about giving, even when you feel you have nothing to give. In 2005, fighting three mental disorders, I wrote this special story to emphasize the urgency for each of us to provide hope to those who have none.

Sincerely,

Chris Nihmey (chrisnihmey.com)

I give permission for my child to purchase the picture book, Sally, and will be reading it first.

Our schoolyard reconstruction is coming along well – we are in the planning stage and will start work this summer.  In the meantime, we will be refining our drawings to fulfill the expectations of the school board and Aviva – this will be an entirely new yard!!

Teacher Notes for the week of February 8 – 12

Ms. Myers’ Grade 1 class

The “Wonderful Ones” enjoyed participating in our school-wide “Winter Walk” last Monday…even though it felt more like a “Spring Walk!”  We are looking forward to our trip to the Mill of Kintail Conservation Area, this Thursday, February 11, however, given the recent weather conditions, the trip may have to be postponed or cancelled. A note will go home on Wednesday to confirm that we are still going. Please check your child’s agenda on Wednesday.  In math we continue exploring addition and subtraction, focusing on strategies such as “counting on” and “counting back” from the larger number. Wednesday, February 10th  is Ash Wednesday. This marks the beginning of the Lenten season. We will be focusing on how Lent is a time to pray, share, and love as Jesus taught. It seems that this week is one of “beginnings” as many of the families in our community will celebrate Lunar New Year!  We will be learning about some of the traditions associated with this celebration.  As Valentine’s Day approaches we will be sharing stories of friendship and renewing our commitment to our “Class Promise.” For those who wish to participate, we will exchange Valentines on Friday, February 12th. A list of classmates can be found on the back of the February newsletter sent home last week. Have a great week and enjoy a wonderful “Family Day” weekend!

Ms. Moga’s Grade 2 class

February is off to a great start in grade 2! We ended the week with our “I Care” presentation. The students did a great job of reading their parts and being a part of some photos in the slideshow.

This week, our trip to the Mill of Kintail is scheduled for Thursday. However, given the warmer weather and melting snow, it is a possibility the trip will be cancelled. You will receive notice on Wednesday letting you know if we are going or not.

In math, we are continuing with geometry. The students are working on identifying and classifying 3D figures.

In language, we are beginning explanatory (informative) writing. This is similar to descriptive writing, but focuses more on the how and why of something (e.g. how elevators work, how birds fly). We will read texts that helps us write explanations.

In science, we are continuing to explore simple machines, focusing on the screw and wheel and axle this week.

In art, our “Symmetry Selfies” were a big hit last week. The students all did an amazing job! This week, we will make a symmetrical design using pattern blocks.

Lastly, Valentine’s Day is next weekend. I will provide a list of student names from our class if your child wishes to hand out valentines. There will be time to hand them out on Friday.

Have a great week,

Ms. Moga

Our Winter Walk Day

Our Winter Walk Day

Mrs.Rupnik’s Class

This week, in the spirit of Valentine’s Day, we will complete our two-week writing project that is linked to our Social Language program.  For the past two weeks, the students have been taking turns writing friendly messages about each other on handmade Valentine hearts.  On Friday, we will share these messages.  This is a wonderful ‘feel good’ activity for all the students. The Valentine hearts will be sent home. I hope you take time to read these Valentine messages with your child. Enjoy the Family Day long weekend together. Please note: A class list will be sent home on Monday, February 8 for Valentine cards. (Valentine cards are optional.)

FDK News!

The FDK students are very excited about our new school-wide theme of “I Care”.  We participated in our assembly on Friday to see how we can make a difference by being kind, caring and respectful to each other.  We are catching students doing random acts of kindness!  We are already observing how quickly it is catching on and how students are paying it forward.
We will focus on Valentine’s Day this week.  Ask your child to sing to you one of our “love” songs.  The FDK students will have a chance to share their Valentine cards with each other on Friday.  A list of names will be sent home on Monday.  This is a great opportunity as a parent to see how your child recognizes the names of their friends and can print their names too!!
We are continuing our story sequencing by retelling stories using pictures and story props.  In Math, we continue to focus on 2D and 3D shapes.  We will have an Ash Wednesday celebration in the gym this week and it is Pizza Day on Friday!  We will also have a “Valentine Dance Party” on Friday afternoon for our FDK students!  We do love to dance!
We look forward to a great week and we wish you and your family a great Family Day Weekend!  (No school on Monday February 15, 2016)

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

Happy Chinese New Year! Many of our families celebrate this wonderful holiday that begins, this year, today. We will learn about some of the traditions that mark this special event. Best wishes go out to everyone!

On Wednesday, we will participate in our Ash Wednesday Liturgy. This is an important time in our Catholic faith that marks the beginning of Lent and our journey towards Easter.  Our class has been preparing for this, with many of our students taking an active part as either readers or gift bearers.  Parents are welcome to join us in the school gym at 9am.

On Friday, the students will have a chance to deliver Valentines to their classmates in anticipation of Valentine’s Day on February 14th. This year it falls during the Family Day Weekend. There will be no school on Monday! I hope you all enjoy a wonderful long weekend spending time with your families.

Your students brought home our class newsletter with lots of important information. Please take the time to review it with your child. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me at the school.

Your child will be bringing home his/her homework duotang today.  In it there is an outline for an exciting assignment they have been given.  They are to choose a children’s story book and practice retelling the story in an animated way with emphasis on clarity, pace and tone.  They will have two weeks to practice retelling their story.  Looking forward to hearing some entertaining stories.

In Language, we will focus on the reading strategy of sequencing.

Students will need to:

– recognize the importance of the order of events, directions, or steps

– link information in an ordered way, eg., retell a story, or directions in order

– recognize text signals that indicate that order is important e.g., signal words such as ‘first,’ ‘next,’ and ‘finally’.

The writing strategy that is linked to sequencing is procedural writing.  The students will have the opportunity to write the steps to something that is familiar to them or that they have experienced before.

In math, we continue to explore multiplication and division.  We will be using larger numbers to solve problems. Basic fact recall is very important for your child to practice regularly in order to have greater success.

Lots going on!!  Have a wonderful week!!

Robotics – what is out there?  We are purchasing more robot kits for our school – although we can’t get pieces as sophisticated as some of the ones in this video, we are making gains!
