Ecoschool Green Club Update October 2015

We have a great Ecoschools Green Club at St. Anthony Catholic School. Some members gathered together this week to create a bulletin board to showcase the initiatives we have completed in just our first two months of school.  The bulletin board will be updated regularly with students. The next time you are at our school, please visit our bulletin board.  Our green efforts are definitely newsworthy!

KINDERGARTEN NEWS

Kindergarten Halloween Parade
The Kindergarten students are invited to wear their costumes to school on Friday, October 30.  The students will have the opportunity to tour the school to show the rest of the school their costumes in the morning. Please refrain from sending any toy guns/swords to school. If needed, please send a change of clothing as the students will most likely want to wear their normal clothes for the remainder of the day.
Healthy Eating

On Monday, October 26th the Kinders will listen to a short presentation about eating healthy foods/snacks by Beverly Wilcox, the school’s health nurse.

Pedestrian Safety Presentations
The Kindergarten students will also attend a short information session on Pedestrian Safety presented by the Ottawa Safety Council.

Welcome to the Kindergarten Team

Shannon Draper has been assigned as the English Kindergarten teacher for the second classroom.  She will be teaching English to both classes and Mlle. Schlesak will be teaching French to both classes. All other subjects are taught by both teachers. We also have a new EA, Mona Heagley.  Liana Dunn is the Early Childhood Educator who will be with us until the Christmas holiday. In the new year, April Turner will return from maternity leave.

Ms. Myers Class
The season of Autumn has provided us with many learning opportunities!  In science we have been inquiring about seasonal changes and the impact they have on living things. Many beautiful leaves have been brought to class and the students have enjoyed identifying them using non-fiction books in the classroom. The bounty of fall allowed us an opportunity to make applesauce with leftover apples! On Tuesday we look forward to our trip to the Parkdale Market, where we will purchase items for making salad. Wednesday, we will attend a pedestrian safety presentation facilitated by the city of Ottawa.  The Halloween party, hosted by the St. Anthony parent council, will run between 4:30 and 6:00 p.m. in the school gymnasium. Parents must accompany their children to this event. We are looking forward to another busy week of learning in Grade 1!
grade 1
Ms. Draper’s Class
Ms. Draper will be moving to Kindergarten to take up the second class that has been created.  Ms. Moga, a new teacher to St. Anthony will be taking her place.  Welcome Ms. Moga to St. Anthony!
What an exciting week ahead!  The Grade 2 class will once again have the wonderful opportunity to say a prayer on the intercom for our daily announcements.  We will have our monthly star assembly, a pedestrian safety presentation and a kid orchestra assembly.  It is also photo retake day on Monday and don’t forget about The Best Halloween Party ever that will begin at 4:30 in the St Anthony school gym on Friday October 30th!  Please come dressed and ready for a spooktacular event!!The grade 2 class walked to the mailbox on Friday to send our first letter in the mail.  Students were fascinated with the large red box and wondered how the mail will ever get to its destination?  Stay tuned, and watch your mailbox for a letter from your child!!
This was a follow-up activity from our reading of Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown.  Students loved the story of Flat Stanley, ask your child to tell you more about this special character!
We counted more items, such as leaves, cubes and now coins.  Students used coins to buy super stickers.  They really enjoyed counting by 5’s and 10’s using nickels and dimes!  They are  using coins to represent numbers.  They were also using quarters to buy certain items.  Great job Grade 2’s!
We will be doing lots of pumpkin inquiry this week!  We are looking forward to a great week of learning!

Teresa Rupnik’s class
This week in the Primary Language Class, we will begin work on recount writing. Recount writing allows students to retell events from their weekend and describe past experiences. In order to help keep the class floors neat and tidy, we are requesting that each student brings an inexpensive pair of shoes that could be left at St. Anthony Catholic School. The shoes should be shoes he/she can put on easily on their own (i.e. without laces if you child is unable to tie his/her shoes yet).  Please be sure to write your child’s name in the shoes clearly.  Remember to return the October homework calendars on Thursday, October 29, 2015. Have a happy and safe Halloween!

This week in Manzoli’s Stars class…..

We have a very busy week ahead of us this week beginning with photo retakes on Monday.

We also have our Public Nurse visiting our class on Tuesday with a presentation on Personal Hygiene and on Wednesday we have a special presentation on Pedestrian Safety.  Don’t forget Friday is Pizza Day and Our Halloween party beginning at 4:30, don’t forget your costume and toonie.

In Language we will be introduced to our new spelling words and we will be having our word quiz on Friday. Reviewing these words daily is essential for reinforcement.  We will begin our last Daily 5 station “working with words”. In Math, we have begun geometric patterns.  Another experiment is planned for science “ Looking at seeds”.  We will also be talking about the true meaning of Halloween and have a little celebration on Friday by playing Halloween BINGO.

Here are some anchor charts that we are using in language when we write.

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

The Grade 4/5 team completed our place value unit with the completion of a summative and test.  The students rose to the occasion and demonstrated their knowledge to the best of their ability.  The students should continue to review concepts learned as they will be called upon throughout all the math strands.  We will be using the inquiry method to add and subtract 2 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers as well as adding and subtracting 3 and 4 digit numbers with regrouping and borrowing.  The students will be introduced and given information about a new online program that we will also be using called Mathletics.  Look for information coming home with your child in the near future.

In Language we will continue with Listening to reading by using the online program Raz kids and responding to what the students are listening to.  It is great to see how many students have already taken full advantage of this wonderful resource at home.

The grade 4/5 team is also preparing for our school assembly where they along with the grade 5/6 team will be presenting the Catholic Graduate Expectation of Teamwork to the entire school. They will demonstrate what each class will be working towards for the month of November in an attempt to be the keeper of the coveted trophy.  It’s all about teamwork!

There will also be lots of excitement in the air as Halloween is fast approaching.  We will work together to decorate our classroom door in anticipation of Friday’s Halloween Party.

A reminder that picture re-take day is Monday.  Homework duotangs will be sent home on Monday.  Activities are to be completed to the best of the students ability before returning it to school on Friday.

Have a wonderful week!

Teacher Notes for this week

Ms. Myer’s Class

The children are doing well with their weekly word wall words! They are recognizing many of them in our daily shared reading and, as a result, are becoming increasingly confident as they approach new reading material. The students helped create a chart with the strategies they find most useful when reading. I see that many children have been able to login into our Raz-Kids program. The username is mmyers52. Please let me know if you experience difficulty accessing this program. In math, we will focus on the concepts of “more” and “less” and explore how numbers relate to the anchors of 5 and 10 – our “friendly numbers!”  A few reminders:  Our home reading volunteer will visit on Tuesday instead of Wednesday this week and photo orders are dueOctober 20. If you would like your child to have a re-take done on October 26, please write a note in the agenda. Have a great week!

Myers

Ms. Draper’s Class

The grade 2 class enjoyed the Thanksgiving Mass on Friday at St Anthony Church.  We reviewed the parts of the mass and what they would experience while they took part in this very special celebration.  For some of our grade 2 students it was their first visit to St Anthony Church.  What a wonderful opportunity to be a part of an amazing partnership between our school and our parish!

The Glitterbug from Ottawa Public Health gave us a “hands-on” look at how many germs are on our hands.  Students used the Glitterbug potion on their hands to see under the ultra-violet light how many germs we have on our hands.  We then washed our hands using proper hand washing techniques and then came back to the Glitterbug to see how clean we can be!!  As the cold and flu season approaches this was a great way to reinforce the importance of hand washing!
In Language, we read a poem about Autumn Leaves and did a follow-up writing assignment about what is our favorite season and what pile we would prefer to jump in!  A pile or snow,a pile of leaves, a pile of cool green grass or a pile of hay!!  Ask your son/daughter what they wrote about and what is their favorite pile!
We are estimating, representing and comparing numbers in Math.  We counted raisins, paper clips and all of our socks in the class!  Students enjoy Math when they get to work together to problem solve, to share their answers and to show what they know about numbers!  Great work Grade 2’s!
Stay tuned for our “Scientists in the School” visit coming up on Wednesday, November 4, 2015.
Looking forward to a great week of learning, interacting and participating in Grade 2!

Mrs.Rupnik’s Primary Language Class:

This week in the Primary Language Class, we will continue to work on ‘think-marks’ during our reading conferences.  Some students have already started using Raz-Kids at home as part of their homework routine. I encourage you to try Raz-Kids at home with your child. We are using Raz-Kids at school and students would benefit from using it at home for short periods of time as an extension of classroom activities.  This month is also Library Month across Canada.  Libraries help build communities and help spark student learning.  Help celebrate Library month and visit your local Ottawa Public Library branch with your child this month. Lastly, we will begin our Kindness in the Classroom program this Friday.  Lindsey Barr, owner of World-Changing Kids (WCK) and author of the book, ‘Plant a Garden of Kindness, A Child’s Guide to Filling a Year with Weekly Acts of Kindness’ will run monthly kindness workshops in our class. The workshops will be 45 minutes in length and will include a lesson and the completion of an act of kindness.  This Kindness in the Classroom program supports our daily social language lessons. We are delighted to be part of this program and are looking forward to the monthly workshops. Please remember to return the two consent forms for taking photos and/or videos during Kindness in the Classroom program workshops.

Manzoli’s Stars…. this week

Student photos went home on Friday, orders are due on Tuesday October 20.

This week the grade three’s look forward to their last swimming lesson on Wednesday so don’t forget your bathing suit and towel.  The grade four’s will look forward to having Scientist in the school for science this week with Mr. Chartrand.

This week the students will be introduced to new words of the week with a focus on short u sounds, they should be practicing these words daily to reinforce spelling patterns.   We will also begin learning how to write a proper paragraph using the hamburger model for recount writing.

In math, we start our new unit “Patterning and Algebra”.  We will begin looking at geometric patterns and then move into number patterns.  Continue using Dreambox as a way to reinforce concepts at home.  We will also be introduced to a another program called mathletics that the students can use at school and home.  More information will follow.

Last note….. please ensure your child comes to school wearing proper clothing for the cooler days ahead.

Have a great week!

Mrs. Manzoli

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Team News

The Grade 4/5 Team is excited to have added two new members to our roster over the last couple of weeks.  Welcome to Lexia and Dawson!

In math the students have been introduced to Nelson Math online to help review the concepts we have learned in our Place Value unit.  The students will be able to demonstrate their understanding on the test they will be writing on Thursday.  The students are able to access the online resource at home on their Chromebooks to help them prepare for the test.

In Language Arts the students will be introduced to our third station of our Daily 5, listening to reading.  The students will be given login information so that they will be able to access the books from Raz Kids at school as well as at home.  Look for the login information in their mailbag coming home this week. They are also encouraged to practice reading to self and reading to someone at home so that the joy of reading continues to grow. The grade 4/5s have been writing about friendship and using editorial marks to edit their own work.

The weather is changing, a chill is in the air.  Please ensure your child comes to school dressed appropriately for the weather so that they can enjoy their time outdoors. Thank you for continuing to send healthy, nut-free snacks to school with your child.

You are encouraged to check our class calendar for up to date information on what is going on with the Grade 4/5 team.

Have a great week!

Ms. Colaiacovo’s Class

The grade 5/6 class forges through October learning new concepts and skills inside and outside the classroom! In math, we wrapped up the place value component of our numeracy unit and we will be moving into patterning beginning this week. Our language arts blocks are filled with new learning about the Daily Five program, encompassing areas of individual learning in literacy. The students will be sharing their “Dear Terry” letters with parents this week, watch for those coming home in mailbags and please sign and return them to school. The students and I, together, have been learning Gaelic Football skills in physical education and many of the grade 5/6 students will be taking part in the tournament of this exciting new (to Saint Anthony) sport on Wednesday, October 21. Parents are invited and encouraged to come out and cheer on the team! We are excited to announce that the YMCA “Y Kids Academy” begins this Thursday, October 22. Our grade 5/6 class will be participating in this healthy-living program for the next six weeks. I thank you for continuing to support your child’s journey by encouraging good study habits and healthy lifestyle choices.

Teacher Notes for the Week

Ms. Myers Grade One Class:

We look forward to a short but busy week in Grade 1!  As part of our health and physical education curriculum, we will focus on the importance of proper hand washing. Using resources from Ottawa Public Health, the children will review the procedure for proper hand washing and the “Glitterbug” will help us find out if our hands are truly clean or not!  This is an essential habit for the children to practice, especially as we enter cold and flu season. A reminder that library and home reading books are due every Wednesday. Thank you for taking the time to read with your child each night using books from school or those you may have at home.  On Friday, October 16, we will celebrate our Thanksgiving Mass at 9:00 a.m. at St. Anthony Church.  You are welcome to attend!

gr 1

Ms. Drapers Grade Two Class

The grade 2 class prepared for Thanksgiving by discussing what we are truly thankful for.  We enjoyed singing a Thank you song, making a hand printed turkey and an edible turkey!  We will continue practicing songs for our Thanksgiving mass and preparing for our first mass of the year on Friday October 16th at 9:00 am.  Please join us at St. Anthony Church.
We are busy counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s in our Math unit on Numbers.  Students used old calendars to create number lines, find numbers and to practice skip counting.  We will continue counting and grouping items into 10’s to help us count!
We enjoyed our Read-a-Loud called “The Thing I Saw Last Night.”  We were able to make many personal connections to this story!  Students love the opportunity to share their own personal connections with the class!  Many great storytellers in Grade 2!!
Library Day will return next Monday.  Gym days on Wednesday and Friday.  Happy Thanksgiving to all of our St Anthony School Community!

Mrs. Rupnik’s Primary Language Class

Welcome back from the Thanksgiving long weekend.  I hope you enjoyed some family time together.  Did you have an opportunity to try out Raz-Kids at home yet? A note was sent home last Thursday with personal login information and passwords. It is a wonderful tool because it helps children improve recognition of word wall words, enhance oral reading skills, comprehension, etc.  This week, I will begin showing the children how ‘think-marks’ work.  ‘Think-marks’ involves stopping while reading and thinking about the story on a deeper level. Students will learn to use post-it notes and record their thinking when reading with the assistance of myself and our wonderful volunteers.  This allows us to talk about our thinking and to better understand the stories we read. Our Thanksgiving mass is scheduled forFriday, October 16, 2015 at 9:00am. If you are available, please join us for this special celebration at St. Anthony Parish.

Manzoli Stars……. This week

Hoping all families had an enjoyable Thanksgiving Weekend.  As we enter in this short week we look forward to another swimming lesson on Wednesday.  Don’t forget your bathing suit and towel.

We will be also having our first Thanksgiving Mass on Friday October 16 at 9:00.  Some students will be bringing home their part of the mass to practice.

manzoli

Homework folders:  students are bringing in their homework in pieces, please remind your child to have their homework completed and placed in folders provided.  We will be having our second word quiz this Friday and some children have not returned their notebook.  Having responsibility of their belongings is something crucial for proper learning to happen.

We are also consolidating our number sense unit with a quiz on Friday.  Children should be able to:

  • represent numbers to 1000 (Gr. 3) 10,000 (Gr.4)
  • represent place value of ones, tens, hundreds, thousand
  • write numbers in expanded form
  • identifying greater/less numbers ( symbols < >)
  • round numbers to nearest ten and hundred

In language we are still working on “Listening to Read”.  We will begin using RAZ KIds an online reading program.

Have a great week!

Thanksgiving Fruit Salad
As part of our discussion of giving thanks for the many gifts in our lives, we would like to celebrate by making a fruit salad together on Thursday, October 8th. We would ask that each student bring in a small container of fruit to participate in the process of making the fruit salad as a class community. The Kindergarten team would like to wish you and your family a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

Ms. Myers’ Grade One Class

Our Terry Fox Walk was a great success!  Thanks to all those parents who were able to help out for the morning.  We reached our fundraising goal and Mr. McGuire is now sporting a much shorter hairstyle!! This week we welcome Mrs. Mullins to our class. She will be our Home Reading volunteer. Every Wednesday the children will choose a book with Mrs. Mullins and bring it home to practice reading. Please check your child’s backpack this Wednesday for a Ziploc bag containing the book your child chose as well as a reading record sheet.  Each week Mrs. Mullins will listen to your child read their book and choose a new one to take home.  As Thanksgiving approaches we will be focusing on how we appreciate the gifts of God’s creation.  Happy Thanksgiving to all the “Wonderful Ones” and their families!

News from Grade 2 for the Week October 5- October 9, 2015 Ms Draper

The St Anthony School Community did a great job raising funds for our Terry Fox campaign.  Thank you for making a difference!  We are looking forward to a great week of learning in grade 2.  The grade 2 class is enjoying our Science unit on animals.  We are sorting animals into categories and figuring out why they belong in each category.
In Family Life, we are learning that sharing our feelings is important and it helps people to better understand us.
The students had the opportunity to do some role playing for our Read-a-loud called “Should Children Choose Their Own Bedtime”.  They came up with some very convincing arguments in front of the group.  We are doing a great job writing in our daily journals and using ideas from books we have read to generate our own ideas.
We have wrapped up our unit on Patterning and growing number patterns.  The students enjoy using manipulatives to find solutions.
We will have the opportunity to prepare for Thanksgiving by creating some turkey art and discussing what we are truly thankful for in preparation for our Thanksgiving Mass on October 16th.  Happy Thanksgiving to all of our families!  Enjoy the long weekend, no school Friday October 9th and Monday October 12th.

Ms. Rupnik’s PLC Class

This week in the Primary Language Class, we will focus on journal writing using new vocabulary for the season of Autumn. As they write, students will be encouraged to center on the individual writing goals set last week (see picture). In our Social Language program, we will role-play how to start and end conversations with our friends. You may want to practice this skill at home too.  We will also create ‘thankful turkeys’ for our class bulletin board and talk about all the things we are grateful for in our lives.

News in grade 3/4. Manzoli’s Stars…..

This week we focus on giving thanks as we prepare for our Thanksgiving Weekend with family

and friends. We will discuss the diverse ways we celebrate and compare to the Canadian

Thanksgiving. On Wednesday, the grade 3 students will be going to their first swim to survive

swimming lesson at Plant Bath, starting at 1:00. Please remember your bathing suit and towel.

We continue to work on our Daily Five language stations. This week the students will be

introduced to our “listen to reading” station. They will be able to listen to texts using a program

called “raz kids”. They will be provided information to use this reading program at home too.

Please ensure that you continue to check your child’s agenda nightly. Reminder that tomorrow

is library day, please have your books at school.

I would like to wish you all a very “Happy Thanksgiving Day”!

Mrs. Troccoli’s Grade 4/5 Class

September went out on a high note!  The Grade 4/5 Class along with the 5/6 class took the lead during our Terry Fox Event as we enjoyed a wonderful high energy walk with the entire school to Dow’s Lake on a beautiful fall day.  All in the name of Cancer research!  We exceeded our goal of 350 dollars and enjoyed watching our good sport, principal, Mr. McGuire, get his hair buzzed in front of the entire school!  An event certainly worth celebrating!

In Math, we will continue to look at large numbers. We will use numbers that relate to real life situations and represent them in a variety of ways. Have your child read numbers to you from newspapers, magazines, on TV, while shopping or on signs you may pass. In addition, students should be practicing their multiplication facts to 5 so that they may recall them easily.

In Language, the students have been introduced to “Read to Someone”, our second station in our Daily 5 routine.  Ask your child to demonstrate this skill with you as they share a book they are reading. We have also been reading different texts and identifying the writer’s point of view. They are sharing ideas through discussions and writing on how different situations can have more than one point of view.

Here we come October!

Ms. Colaiacovo’s Class

The grade 5/6 charged full-speed ahead into October, continuing the great work ethic that they established during the first month of school.

The place value portion of number sense and numeration will wrap up this week with a review of what we have learned in preparation for an upcoming test. Students are encouraged to challenge themselves by looking at numbers outside of the classroom (magazine articles, newspaper reports) and finding different ways to represent those numbers.
We spent the latter of September getting to know a true Canadian hero, Terry Fox, a little better through the novelRun by Eric Walters (ask your child to summarize/retell the story to you!); and through various media literacy, oral communication, and writing activities. We continue to focus on the importance of conventions in their writing, such as capitalizing proper nouns and words at the beginning of sentences, and using proper punctuation in their writing.
Students have also required reminders of the responsible use of the Chromebook or laptops which they have been privileged to receive. They must ensure that they come to school prepared with charged devices each and every day. Please follow up at home on this discussion with your child to reinforce the importance of this responsibility.
The boys’ and girls’ soccer teams performed admirably at the Board tournament, and we expect that the Cross Country meet this Tuesday will be equally successful.
Thanks for your continued support on the homefront.
