St. Anthony Connects – the Week of September 28 – October 2

Aviva poster

A message to all St. Anthony parents and Guardians

I am writing all of you today to ask you to support St. Anthony School in our bid to build a new schoolyard.

A bit of History

In 1998, the original schoolyard was entirely made of asphalt and won the Ottawa-wide “Ugly Schoolyard” contest. Shortly after, a greening project was started to remove some of the asphalt and add trees. Now the school community wants to finish the job and transform the St. Anthony yard into a green haven for the entire community.  We entered the Aviva Campaign for the first time last year – we can very close (80 votes) from making it into the national finals.

 How does this work?

Encourage your friends, family and community to vote every day from October 6 to 23. You have 18 votes and 18 days to use them. You can use your votes for a single idea, or multiple ideas, but you can only vote for the same idea once per day.

Timeline

Timeline for voting

Voting starts October 3 – please see the timeline below. Do it every day fromOctober 6 to October 23!The 30 projects with the most votes in their idea categories and funding levels will go on to be finalists. On December 2, a panel of distinguished judges will select the Grand Prize Winners from the list of 30 finalists.

How can I help St. Anthony?

We need your vote every day from October 6 – 23 days – you vote by going to this address:

https://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf32399

you will need to register and provide an e-mail address in order to vote the first time. You can register with more than one address.

 Even better!!

Please send your e-mail address to me – paul.mcguire@ocsb.ca and I will send you a daily reminder from October 6 – 23 because voting every day is the way to win.

Please help us!!  We really can turn Asphalt into an Oasis at St. Anthony Catholic with your help!!

Teacher Notes for this Week

Ms Myers:

The “Wonderful Ones” have been busy learning the read and print the names of all the friends in our class. The names of all the students have been added to our “Word Wall.” We are ready to start adding some high-frequency words that the children encounter often when they are reading. Each week we will be focusing on 5 words. Your child will bring them home and can practice reading, printing, and finding them in their library books or books you have at home.  The first monthly homework calendar will be sent home this Thursday, October 1st. Please check your child’s agenda. We have been gearing up for the Terry Fox run!  It will take place on Tuesday, September 29th. Our class has worked hard on some posters that we will carry with us on our walk. Keep those “toonies” coming in!!  We have been adding them up each day. We appreciate your support – and the children are hoping that Mr. McGuire will get a “really short haircut!!”  Hopefully we will reach our goal of $350.00!! Thank you, again, for your support of this worthwhile activity.

Green Club News

St. Anthony Catholic School participated in our annual Fall Cleaning the Capital event on Thursday, September 24, 2015.  The students and staff picked up litter in and around the school as well as composted materials like twigs and branches. Students also weeded our flowerbeds and added fresh new soil for the perennial plants.  The Cleaning the Capital event was a great way for us all to come together as a school community and to ensure our school grounds stay tidy and green. Way to go St. Anthony Catholic School!

It’s going to be another busy week in the grade 5/6 class as we have a couple of special events happening, in addition to our usual programming. On Tuesday, the entire school population will be participating in the Terry Fox walk and our 5/6 students are taking a lead role in promoting of the event by creating and carrying colourful signs advertising the cause. If your child has not yet brought in a Toonies for Terry donation, please encourage him/her to do so by Tuesday. The boys’ soccer tournament takes place on Wednesday at St. Gemma school. Parents are welcomed and encouraged to come out and cheer on the team! The “first round” of homework yielded fairly good results, as most students completed their work to the best of their ability and returned it on time. Please check in with your child on a daily basis to ensure that these good work habits continue throughout the school year. Thanks for your continued support.

Teacher notes for the Week

Ms Myers Grade 1 Classs

The “Wonderful Ones” worked together to create a class promise which everyone pledged to try and keep. They are very proud of ideas they generated! We will continue to emphasize the importance of being responsible and respectful members of our school community as the year progresses. Our library and gym days have been established. Tuesdays and Thursdays we will have gym. Wednesdays will be our library book exchange day. The children will bring home 1 book each week and will be expected to return it on the following Wednesday. In math we are exploring numbers all around us – on our calendar, on book pages, and in many other places in our classroom and at school. We will also practice our skip counting skills as we collect “toonies” for our upcoming Terry Fox walk! Thank you for your support in this endeavor.

Ms Rupnik’s Primary Language Class

This week in the Primary Language Class, we will begin work on individual reading programs. We will also start work on new vocabulary for the season of Autumn. Please note that our September homework calendar officially begins this week. Help yourchild make a plan to work around outside commitments (for example: sport, clubs, etc.).  The activities on the monthly homework calendars are short and require about 5-10 minutes to complete. In addition to the homework calendar activities, it is very beneficial to read to and with your child every night. Have your child track print in books using the painted ‘reading wand’ sent home on Friday. See ‘reading wand’ picture attached.

Ms  Manzoli’s Grade 3/4 class

News from the Manzoli’s stars ¾ Class….

As we enter into the third week of school the students are still working on routines of the class.  It is so important to have these routines in place in order for good learning to happen in the class.  Things like raising your hand when you want to speak and not blurting out when the teacher is speaking are just a couple of good habits to practice.  This week we have some special activities lined up, like clean the Capital on Thursday.  The children will participate in cleaning the yard and the gardens that we have in our yard.

Ms. Draper’s grade 2 class The Second Week in Second Grade!

We had a great first week of learning and getting to know each other in our Grade 2 class community.  We reviewed our classroom routines and had the opportunity to really get to know one another through different activities such as an All About Me poster and The Best Part of Me picture and story.  The students loved the book ” God’s Dream.”  Our focus in Math will be learning about patterns in our environment.  We will first focus on sorting objects by their different attributes (shape, color , size..) then use what we know to identify what is changing in a pattern.  At home, look for patterns in your environment with your child.  Ask your child to explain what is changing and to tell you what will come next in the pattern.
Students will be bringing home their Homework books this week.  It includes a note about homework and a fun activity called The Me Museum.  Enjoy!

Welcome back to St. Anthony!

Principal’s Note: Welcome to a new year!

Hello everyone!  I hope that everyone has had a great summer. I was able to see many students this summer atChristie Lake Camp
we had a great group there this summer and it was wonderful to see how our emphasis on developing community partnerships translated into so many students having a great camp experience.

We continued to work with Ecology Ottawa andEvergreen this summer and we are currently adding soil and mulch in preparation for planting in our yard that will take place in September.
You can see in the photo above Carleton University students working on the yard in early August.

We have spent the summer working with a wonderful group of community volunteers to put together the first St. Anthony Gale/Reunion and fundraiser.  This will be a wonderful event that will bring former teachers administrators and students together to celebrate the heritage of St. Anthony School and Dante Academy.
The event will be held on September 26 and there is a wealth of information about the event here at this special website  designed for the event.

We continue to develop and improve our partnerships in the community.  We will continue to work with the Somerset West Community Health Center .
We also plan to work closer with Ottawa Community Immigrant Services OCISO to better serve the parent community.

We are in the process of developing programming for our students  again this year we will again be offering table tennis lessons, we will continue to have a very active Green Team and we will continue to develop our makerspace in our learning commons.  We hope to continue with arts programming based on our ability to raise funding.

For daily information on what is going on at St. Anthony please check on social media feeds.

Ms Draper’s plan for this week

Welcome to Grade 2!
The grade 2 students will spend our first week back at school getting to know each other and practicing our classroom routines.  We have many exciting learning opportunities planned for this year and we will get started by sharing stories about our summer, playing friendship Bingo, reading “First Day Jitters” and making connections to some of our feelings about returning to school for another great year.  There will be a few projects to get us started on the right track and to make sure I get to know your child.  We will complete an “All About Me” poster, “The Best Part of Me” art activity and a shared graph for Math about how we get to school!  Looking forward to a great week of learning in Grade 2!  Mrs. Draper

Ms Myers’ class for this week:

Welcome back!  I’m looking forward to meeting all the “Wonderful Ones!”  This week we will spend time getting to know one another and reviewing classroom and school routines. You can help your child be prepared for the week by ensuring that they have a healthy lunch with nutritious snacks each day, a pair of indoor shoes that they can keep at school, and…a good rest each night!  To read more about the importance of a sleep for your growing child, click on this link: http://www.canadianliving.com/health/prevention/sleep_makes_kids_smarter.php

See everyone Tuesday, September 8th!
