voice of the day
There is a light in this world, a healing spirit more powerful than any darkness may encounter. We sometimes lose sight of this force when there is suffering, too much pain. then suddenly the spirit will emerge through the lives of ordinary people who hear a call and answer in extraordinary ways.
prayer of the day
God, thank you for giving us light in the darkness. Do not let us lose sight of this mysterious power. As we have been given hope in the midst of our suffering, may we too offer hope and light to those who only see darkness. Amen.
News from the Green Club December 2014
The Green Club has been busy at St. Anthony Catholic School. In
mid October we had our annual Cleaning the Capital event
where all staff and students picked up litter and compost leaves
around our school grounds. We made GOOS (Good On Other
Side) boxes for each classroom to save paper. Green Club
students are also running a Caught You Wasting Program and
continue to track individual class results. Classes that leave lights
and SMARTboard monitors on when not in use get a ‘caught you
wasting’ sign posted on their door. More recently, we conducted a
school-wide Waste Audit, which included investigating waste
collected in the wastebaskets, compost bins, and black recycle
bins over the course of one school day. An action plan with one
targeted goal was devised. The results of this waste audit were
presented at a school assembly in a fun Ecojeopardy game
format. A second and third waste audit will be conducted in the
winter and spring. This will allow us to see if our targeted goal of
reducing contamination in our compost bins, wastebaskets, and
black recycle bins has been reached. To keep everyone sharp with
our guidelines of where waste items go (wastebaskets, compost
bins, and black recycle bins) spot audits will be conducted 3 times
weekly and the results posted on our individual class pocket
charts. Stay tuned for more exciting green news!

Sleep is a basic need for everyone. Getting a good night’s sleep is vital for kids. It is needed to
help them develop well and perform their best. School-age kids need 10-12 hours of sleep a
night. Many kids are getting less than this. Signs that a child may not be getting enough sleep
Short attention span
Yawning
Drowsy
Hyper-active
Cranky
Most kids will resist bedtime but parents should be firm. Here is what parents can do to help kids
sleep longer and better:
Have dinner and after school activities early in the evening
No screens in the bedroom. This includes TV, computers, phones and games
Bedrooms should be cool (less than 24C)
House should be quiet
Have the same bedtime routine every night (bath, reading before bed or quiet time, lights
out)
Parents can be great role models and get a good night’s sleep too.
