Tooth Injury: What should you do?

An avulsed tooth is one that has been completely knocked out of its place. This is a time dependant injury.

The best outcome requires quick action.

1) Find the tooth.

2) Pick up the tooth by the crown. It is the part that is used to chew

3) Gently rinse the tooth with distilled water or milk for a few seconds. Do not scrub the tooth. Only use chlorinated tap

water as a last choice, because it may damage the root. Adult teeth should be immediately replaced into its hole

whenever possible. Hold the tooth by the crown and put it back firmly into the hole, root first. The root will usually “click” into

place. Then ask the child to bite down gently on a gauze or cloth. Take the child to the dentist as soon as possible. If the

tooth cannot be replaced in its hole, it should be stored in cold milk or saliva until transferred to the dentist. Baby teeth should not be replanted as it could damage the adult tooth formation. The child should see the dentist as soon as possible.

If a child shows any sign of a head injury such as unconsciousness, nausea or headache, call 911.

Need more information? Talk to your dentist or dental hygienist or call the Ottawa Public Health Information Line at 613-580-6744.

Your drink is sweeter than you think!

Most of the sugar in your day comes from what you drink. We think about sugar in the food we eat but many popular drinks can also have a lot of sugar.

Why you should care:

• Filling up on sugary drinks makes you less hungry for healthier foods.

• Children’s small tummies can fill up on sugar fast.

• Sugary drinks can cause tooth decay.

When choosing a drink remember:

• Water and milk are the best choices.

• Most fruit drinks have no real fruit.

• Read labels and pick drinks with the least amount of sugar.

• If sugar is first in the ingredient list then it’s high in sugar.

• Kids are watching what you drink: your choice impacts theirs!

 Teacher notes for the week

Ms Myers Class Grade 1:

This week the “Wonderful Ones” will explore the needs of living things as we prepare for our trip to the Mill of Kintail Conservation Area, February 5th. In math we are investigating various ways whole numbers are composed – e.g. 5 is the same as 2+3, 4+1, 1+4, etc. Seeing the parts that make up the whole number helps your child develop flexibility with numbers and build important addition and subtraction computation strategies. Thank you for reminding your child to return their January homework this week as well as any permission forms for our upcoming field trip!

Mr Cook’s Class Grade 1/2

Math –> This week in math, we will start our data management lessons where the students will learn to gather data by conducting surveys, represent the data using graphs, and interpret the data from the graphs (“What do the results from our survey tell us?”).

Language –> Our word wall words from this week will focus on short vowel sounds. The word wall words are : has, pet, live, stop, run. We will do various activities using these words and will add them to the word wall on Friday. This week, we will again write in our journals, and continue to work on writing sentences. We will begin to learn more about procedural writing.

Science –> We will learn more about the changes between the seasons and how it affects animals and humans.

Art –> We will finish our warm and cool color art project and discuss meaning behind our pieces of art.

Ms Rupnik’s Class

This upcoming week, we will focus on our new ‘thinkmark’ related to asking questions (for example: what, who, when, where, why, how). After reading a story, students will ask questions related to the text and record their questions. Please note the January homework calendar is due back on Wednesday, January 28, 2015. Please ensure you are working with your child to complete the homework activities daily as part of your nightly routines.

1.  Programs:  Our winter/spring programming is about to begin.  Here is a breakdown of what we have scheduled:

  • Little Horn Theatre:  Audrey Lemieux will be starting a music program with all our students starting January 21st.  The music portion of Little Horn will continue on to February 27th.  Jamie Vargus – the principal trainer of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet will be here January 19th to offer workshops to the junior (grade 4-6) students.

download

  • Y Kids Academy – This is a FREE 12 hour healthy living program designed specifically for grades five and six students.  Upon successful completion of the program, our grade six students will also receive a FREE, one year, no strings attached membership to the YMCAYWCA!      The program starts next week, but we are still looking for parent volunteers to help out.  Volunteers would simply help escort the students to and from the Y as we will be walking.
  • Table Tennis – Forms for this program will be handed out Thursday.  We will be offering this program after school (3:15-4:15)once a week for our students starting January 27 going to April 21.  The price of the 10-week program is $30.00. Subsidies available.

download (1)

  • Hip Hop Dancing – We  will also be offering a 10-week hip hop dance class (juniors only) on Wednesday at lunchtime.   Registration will take place on Wednesday, January 21.  The program will cost students $25.00 for the 10 weeks.  Subsidies available.
  • Young Rembrandts – The drawing program will begin again January 22 for 5 sessions.  Total cost:  $54.00 (full subsidy available)  Registration deadline is January 19th.

download (2)

2.  Pizza Days!  We will be running pizza days twice a month starting January 30th.  Forms for pizza have gone home and are due back January 20th.  This will be our school fundraiser for the year.  All profit will be going directly back into the classroom.

3.  Second session Milk Programbegins January 19th and goes to April 10th.  This program is intended as a fundraiser as well.  We will report on the proceeds from this year’s program to School Council in June.

4.  EQAO – we are starting to work on EQAO preparation now.  Teachers will be meeting over the next week to plan strategies to assist all students in preparation for the tests in May and June.  This school does extremely well in EQAO and we plan to continue our upward trend.  In reading and writing we continue to improve from grade 3 to grade 6.  In math, the trend is not as strong, but we have a team of teachers working on math instruction this year and this could have a positive impact on how are students do.  The most important thing is to start early to identify the students are risk in the areas of reading, writing and math.

EQAO-logo

5.  First Term Report Cards – these will be coming out February 13th.  We will not hold a formal meeting night this round, but parents can schedule a meeting with their classroom teacher to discuss the term I results.  Teachers will also be contacting parents where there are areas of concern.

voice of the day

There is a light in this world, a healing spirit more powerful than any darkness may encounter. We sometimes lose sight of this force when there is suffering, too much pain. then suddenly the spirit will emerge through the lives of ordinary people who hear a call and answer in extraordinary ways.

Mother Teresa

prayer of the day

God, thank you for giving us light in the darkness. Do not let us lose sight of this mysterious power. As we have been given hope in the midst of our suffering, may we too offer hope and light to those who only see darkness. Amen.

News from the Green Club December 2014

The Green Club has been busy at St. Anthony Catholic School. In

mid October we had our annual Cleaning the Capital event

where all staff and students picked up litter and compost leaves

around our school grounds. We made GOOS (Good On Other

Side) boxes for each classroom to save paper. Green Club

students are also running a Caught You Wasting Program and

continue to track individual class results. Classes that leave lights

and SMARTboard monitors on when not in use get a ‘caught you

wasting’ sign posted on their door. More recently, we conducted a

school-wide Waste Audit, which included investigating waste

collected in the wastebaskets, compost bins, and black recycle

bins over the course of one school day. An action plan with one

targeted goal was devised. The results of this waste audit were

presented at a school assembly in a fun Ecojeopardy game

format. A second and third waste audit will be conducted in the

winter and spring. This will allow us to see if our targeted goal of

reducing contamination in our compost bins, wastebaskets, and

black recycle bins has been reached. To keep everyone sharp with

our guidelines of where waste items go (wastebaskets, compost

bins, and black recycle bins) spot audits will be conducted 3 times

weekly and the results posted on our individual class pocket

charts. Stay tuned for more exciting green news!
